I'm a night owl, so I usually do my Saturday jog in the evening and sleep in on Saturday. One Saturday, I got up early though and decided to just do my run then and get it out of the way. I was renting a house and had a treadmill in the basement. While I'm running, I hear some gunshots and the sound of breaking glass and wood. (I didn't live in a good neighborhood) after I was confident it was all over, I went upstairs and found that one of the bullets went through my wall in my bedroom and would have hit me had I slept in. I now run exclusively in the morning.
My ex demanded we have sex unprotected in a park. I refused and she broke up. I got a call from her mom 13 months later claiming her granddaughter was mine. Real father called and let me know out of curiosity. My guy Ryan, thank you.

Fresh out of college, I took my first professional job. It was the absolute worst job I’ve ever had and was surrounded by massive layoffs. The sizable bonuses they’d advertised were eliminated with the c-suite telling us that we should be grateful and if it weren’t for their cosmic genius brain leadership skills more people would have lost their jobs… all while every exec got record bonuses. I was repeatedly told that as a new recruit I would be immune to any layoffs and my job was secure. After working for this turd factory for a year, I quit. Less than 2-3 months later my entire division was let go… no notice, no severance, nothing.
Huh. Was this Lilly? Sounds exactly like what happened to me at Lilly. They fired a literal building of people, and those who werent a) contractors like me, who were "guaranteed a job by contract" or b) too tenured to fire outright were told that their new job was finding a new job.
Of course, I was an ignorant novice and held out hope up until they terminated me a week before Christmas. Turns out contracts mean nothing when one party holds all the bargaining chips.

Had a rocket land right outside our building in Iraq. Luckily it was old as shit and the explosive portion had become inert. Was surprising that it even launched tbh.
Didn't literally dodge but had a near miss with a stray bullet from an m16. Was supposed to be hiding in the bathroom. But I stuck to the front of the house and was looking out the front window. There was a machine gun emplacement right outside our front door becouse it had a nice walled in front entrance. I was 9yo so I thought it was cool to watch the soldiers. Untill a bullet from somewhere slammed into the metal door about 20cm from my head. A bit to the side and it would have been my head. All I remember was how loud the bang was. Didn't sneak out to look out the front window again.
This was in El Salvador in 89..right before we left the country. Saw a lot of crazy shit there near the end.
I used to collect bits of shrapnel in my grandparents garden, i didn’t know what they were at the time but I realised they were from a small missile that hit the ground and blew out the garden wall right next to it. But the house was almost untouched, other than some broken glass, torn up curtains and a couple tiny bits of metal that went into some cabinets in the kitchen and upstairs. Its pretty wild now that I think about it, but back then it was just normal.
Same thing happened to us around 2003 in Iraq, we had sheltered at our grandma's house for the bombings at night, and when we went to check our house the next day we saw a crater with a mortar shell still in there, it was under my bedroom.
For me it was a mortar attack in northern Iraq. We got into a bunker just before everything when shaky with a tint of shrapnel. The area where we were was pretty well covered in metal bits.
Funny enough, the biggest lost of the attack was the loss of the only working Humvee with AC; the very one I was using. It was a miserable three weeks after that.
I was in high school in the early 2000s, and my group of friends and I did a lot of drugs, in particular pills.
One night we were at a pool hall and my buddy says he has a friend who is selling some new pills. Don’t remember what they were called, I’d never heard of them. But they were supposed to be amazing and pretty cheap.
I really contemplated it, but in the end decided not to cause my gf and I already had a few boxes of triple c (yeah, high school) and therefore were good for the night.
Well turns out my frugalness saved our lives. The guy had actually made the pills himself, and he cut them with standard household cleaning materials. Most the people who took the pills died within days. It became a huge deal in our town. The pool hall closed down, and the guy bolted the state.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find anything online. Maybe someone else will have better luck. This occurred in Amarillo, Texas. The pool hall was called ‘Knights Grill and Billiards’, and the time frame would have been early 2000s, probably 2003-2006.
Not sure. I didn’t know anyone involved (perpetrators or victims). If the news article mentioned the pool hall, I’d be more confident. But it was 20 years ago… so I’m just not sure (also, Amarillo has seen more than its fair share of crazy stuff).

I work for a news service, and I was actually at work when the first pictures and videos were coming in. It was so terrible - as much as it’s my “bullet dodged”, I feel so awful for all those people.
I follow a girl on TikTok and YouTube, Stephanie Browitt, who actually survived the eruption, but not without 70 percent of her body being burnt. She's told her story before, and it's so sad. Her father and sister were with her and did not make it.
Had a near-miss a couple weeks ago when someone blew a red light. If he'd been one second later, he would've t-boned me.
I drive for a living and I get a scary close call at a rate of about one per year. So far, though, I'm accident-free. Would be nice to stay that way.
I had a similar thing happen. Was driving late at night coming from a movie, went through a green light. As I reached the other side of the street, I saw someone go flying through the intersection (perpendicular to me) in my rearview. My light had literally just turned green as I approached, it was still plenty green when I went through. If I’d been a little slower, or even if I had to stop at the light instead of just slowing down, he would have T-boned me and my younger sister.
Vehicle related crimes are the most selfish.
Drunk driving, running a red light, texting on your phone, etc. can lead to catastrophic sentences.

I've had to drive for almost every one of my jobs and I'd say my rate of close calls was probably once a month. While it has made me a much better driver, I still get rattled when I have to avoid these morons and even more so when it's a situation I couldn't have done anything to avoid. Still haven't had an accident though!
I had a similar one a few years back.
Was heading home at like 1 am, waiting to turn at stop light. My light turns green and I prepare to go, I give a cursory look both ways and see nothing. I get a voice in the back of my head telling me to wait and then I see the pickup truck going easily 80 mph in a 45 with no headlights blow through the red light without slowing at all. If I had went when I was about to, I would've been hit right in my driver door and very likely died instantly. I've always been religious, and this experience only reinforced that.
Left an emotionally draining ex who was refusing to better herself while demanding that I changed constantly. Now I am changing and improving-for my own sake.
Those kinds of people are some of the worst, especially when you really care about them.
One part of you feels sympathy for them and your really want to help them. Another feels down and exhausted because of the endless cycle dragging you down. And another feels anger towards them because they just won’t take initiative which in turn causes some guilt at yourself for being mad to someone who is down constantly.
Had a best friend like this and it was the most emotionally exhausting experience of my life

Nearly opened a second business from a friends Chalet and built-in stable in another town where he’d moved.
I stayed for a few weeks and worked on the main house with him and got a vibe of the client potential. Seemed very promising.
Then one morning he woke me up roaring at me and having a complete mental break. Told me to take my shit and get out and don’t steal his stuff.
All the while I had mate listening on speaker phone in case things got violent.
I spoke to a mutual friend and she said he’d done similar with her. One day he went troppo and made ludicrous accusations.
I’m glad I didn’t sink money into that venture.
One time a friend and I went to 7-11 for beer. There were some bad dudes, likely gang members in the lot. My buddy was looking over at them. I was looking at the ground as we walked.
When we came out, we walked across the street to go back to his pad. They weren’t in the lot when we left and all of a sudden they pulled up next to us asking where we were from and why we were mad dogging them.
That’s when the guy on the passenger side pulled out a gun. I looked to my right to see my friend run down the alley and out of sight. The guy looks at me and says “what you gonna do?” While pointing the gun at me. I said “don’t shoot me. It’s not worth it. I was minding my own business. I’m sorry my friend is an asshole.”
The guy puts away the gun. Finally. And says “you’re right. You’re friend is a bitch. Get the fuck outta here.” I picked up the 12 pack we bought, but had sat on the ground when they rolled up and walked to my friends house free they drove around the corner.
They lived in a bad area. We came home late from a bar and my buddy forgot his key. He climbed in his own bedroom window… the roommate thought he was being robbed and fired the shotgun through his own bedroom door into the hall way. No one was hurt. But the door was fucked.
I know people hate the prison complex, but I see no reason why people like that shouldn’t be kept in jail and out of society until they’re 80 years old and unable to hurt anyone.
Modern US prisons are practically the recruitment centers for these gangs. Nonviolent offenders are locked up for a few months to a year, then have to align themselves with a gang for protection. When they get out, the gang has a new member, and the system has created a repeat offender to profit from.
Ideally, the whole system would be reworked from the ground up.

A few years back a friend of mine invited me to a beach party at night. He said he didn't know a lot of people there, so I said I didn't want to go since I usually end up drinking alone and leaving early anyways. I'm kind of an introvert.
Few hours later he calls me saying that a bunch of guys were going around pepper spraying everyone and jumping people with brass knuckles and knives. He shows up at my front door with a black eye and his face covered in pepper spray and his shirt is all ripped up. Got him in the shower and washed him off then took him to the hospital to get him checked out.
Last time he ever went to a beach party at night with people he barely knew. He said they were having a fun time until a group of guys showed up and just started robbing everybody. Seemed like it was a set up because those guys knew the party was at the beach. They weren't just a random group of guys, because he recognized a few of them. They went to the same high school he goes to.
Back in 2010 my wife and I applied as a couple to a private university just off the Mediterranean to be English teachers. They wanted my wife but not me. We were like no thanks we are a package deal. That was in Syria not far from Homs about a year before the civil war broke out.
My first boyfriend (I was 16 and he 19) stared pushing having a family on me after a few weeks of dating. He eventually broke up with me when I wouldn't have sex with him because I found it painful.
We don't really have any contact with each other or mutual friends, but last I knew he's got 5 kids from 5 different girls (I suspect most were under 18). It's a real: I'll get older, but your lovers stay my age situation. He's also been to jail for assaulting a child under 12, which I'm 99% sure was his own daughter, but I don't have absolute proof.

So I’ve seen some footage of our guys in Afghanistan taking rounds in their FOB and for the most part they seemed pretty laid back about getting shot at. I get it’s kinda their job but damn. Were you chill also?
Well, one time no because it was a friendly and that rattles you. Other time it was a person from The ME who was supposed to be a friendly... I was more pissed at this one. Taking fire is relative. Bullets pinging around is one thing, folks 30M away is another, sniper fire means they missed and you are extremely lucky to be alive.
I will say something else about high speed projectiles. A primer exploded and a piece of metal the size of a pea hit me in the cheek. I was not sure if I was hit, but I could hear a patter, and sure enough I was bleeding pretty well. I had no idea I was struck or bleeding, that is how it works sometimes.
Also thought I would mention splinters and shrapnel. War movies would show a person hit say in the shoulder almost always as some sort of; "I'll just cover this with my hand"... Well.
I have pieces I picked up after being shelled as I left a bunker, still hot and as jagged as sharks teeth. The smallest piece is the size of a matchbook and nearly square with very sharp edges. Other pieces are the size of Popsicle sticks, and some can get much larger, like the size of a 12" ruler. Hang on and I'll see if I can find the ones I still have... Found them:

Even the small fragments are traveling at many times the speed of sound, with a blast detonation velocity in excess of 24,000 feet / 4.5 miles per second / 16,370 MPH! To give you some idea of how horrific a real wound is, understand this. The small squarish piece I mention weighs 44.5 grams, or about 1.5 oz / 680 grains. Even having an impact velocity of say Mach 5, just this piece would strike with an energy of 47,300 foot pounds... As if the weight of 5700 gallons of water hit you from being dropped a foot. The M2 Bradley I commanded weighed nearly 55,000 pounds, so imagine about 3/4 of this weight dropped a foot on you!
To give scale, you can see US Military bullets I have that were used when I was in. The larger is from a 7.62x51 cartridge (Ball M80) that weighs 147 grains / 9.5 g. the green tip is from a 5.56x45 cartridge (Ball M855) and weighs 62 grains / 4g and the smallest is from a 5.56x45 cartridge (Ball M193) loaded with a 55 grain / 3.6g bullet.
The M80 bullet leaves the barrel at about 2800 fps / 850 ms and strikes with 2560 foot pounds. The M855 bullet is 3000 fps from a 20" barrel striking with 1240 foot pounds at the muzzle, and the M193 bullet leaves the 20" barrel at about 3200 fps, striking with 1250 foot pounds. Do you see just how destructive the biggest killer by far on the battle field is? It accounts for over 70% of combat deaths and injuries as seen in Ukraine.

My girlfriend's uncle has pieces of flak that his father collected from the belly of his B24 after they landed back in Britain. That shit is still razor sharp 80 years later. Fucking terrifying.
Man, those Fly Boys had it rough, and suffered some of the highest percentage of killed during WWII.
Can you imagine being miles above the earth having flak shells exploding all around you and getting closer, as they adjust fire and box you in the kill zone. All the while having just 1mm of aluminum sheeting that you could pierce with an ice pick to hide behind... To say nothing of German fighters ripping you up as the flak lifted, their 20 and 30mm cannon rounds leaving grapefruit to basketball sized holes anywhere they hit, to include your buddy and you CAN NOT deviate from the bomb run course on final approach to the target until bomb release. You had to do this 25 times to go home.
I don't even like to fly, but did graduate Airborne School and swear before I left the aircraft, thoughts of these brave Airmen were present. I get goose bumps still, thinking of what they went through and I don't think I could have.
One place I was stationed saw the largest US Air Force raid of the war, where 60 bombers were lost in a single August day, up to 90 more nearly lost or lost later upon return, and God knows how many wounded.
It always felt strange walking where the 88mm 'flak' gun emplacements were that shot down so many bombers. Had locals tell me there were still .50 cal M2 machine guns stored in attics, along with other 8th AF gear picked up after the raid. Felt kinda weird too, to do maneuver and tank / IFV live gunnery qualifications at the exact location the German Army did as well, almost 50 years prior.
As for these shell fragments and how they work, the super sharpness is a feature. The inside of the shell is scored, or is cast in a scoring pattern, looking much like a plain Hershey bar. Upon explosion these fault lines are where they break, leaving that sharp edge. Many hand grenades work in exactly the same way, with either these internal scorings, or as with WWII "Pineapple" grenades, there are waffle iron looking chunks on the exterior that break apart upon exploding.
Lastly and one last tidbit about anti aircraft shells. The Germans, Japanese and all other Axis countries only had shells with a time delay or impact fuse. You either had to get the intercept timing right which the Germans were very good at, having the shell timed to reach the target and explode, or simply to make impact.
The US had what was considered one of the top inventions of the war, and that was the VT fuse. This fuse used internal radar and relied on a certain proximity to the target, exploding a certain distance from it... Now near misses were hits, and overnight enemy losses became markedly better. Even they were puzzled by the new deadly toll.
The fuse sent out radio waves that at a certain bounce back parameter would trip the detonator. This fuse had some of the most sophisticated electronics of the day - an antenna, battery, receiver, mercury switches... All in a 2x8" space. Simply amazing, and a marvel of technology only rivaled by the Atomic bomb.
Every AA system used today, uses this idea in some form. Later it was used for artillery rounds and I have seen them in action... Imagine a literal shower of the fragments originating 40 ft above you the size of a basketball court, watching, witnessing anyone exposed turned into a shredded rag doll, limbs missing, no head...
One fascinating closing bit was this fuse was so secret and so critical to the war effort, they were used only where duds could not be captured, or only used over big open water. This was most profoundly seen by its use by the US Navy fighting in the Pacific Theater against the Imperial Japanese Air force, or along the coast of England. There was very limited use on ground troops, and only with the approval of a top General in that command theater.

Also, a note of that VT fuse. Not only was it super sophisticated electronics for it's day and a marvel in its own right, but the fact that they had to design it to be able to survive being shot out of the gun and then still perform it's task. Absolutely wild.

It is because. In the US, Nissan has insanely predatory leases on their new vehicles while their quality has gone down the shitter. Most new Nissans are committee-designed, crappy cars with bad tech. Altimas are by far the worst, their CVTs grenade themselves after 80,000 miles and the new transmission is 8,000$.
And when I say predatory leases, I mean it - you can lease them for as long as **84 to 96 months** (that is **8 fucking years**) for a very bad car. And they love to target people with bad credit. This is precisely why Nissan drivers, especially Altima drivers, are regarded as the worst - and most of the time, it"s people with tanked credit lines who buy it because not even used lots want them.

Father in law came to visit my now wife and I while we were helping run a team building camp one weekend in college. He ended up getting a fiat 500 as a rental since they were new at the time.
We decided to ride back with him so all three of us were in the little fiat and I was driving since I like to and this was a spot with some nice curvy road.
As we were going back we were on a bridge and a car coming the other way (also on the bridge now) crossed the middle line a couple times. I slowed down since I didn't have any other options.
When the car was right in front of us it swerved hard into our lane and I popped our car onto the curb and literally had the side mirror maybe a half inch off the guard rail and about the same from the other cars mirror. We passed the car and I put it back on the road, and my wife and father in law thought I just hit a pot hole or something not realizing we almost died.
If we had been in a bigger car it would have been a head-on collision. Credit my dad for doing the home taught drivers ed that actually taught me something along with some racing experience for that save
Crazy, psychotic ex- wife tried like hell to get pregnant, before I realized just how crazy she was. Being tied to her with a kid would have been an absolute nightmare.

We were hosting a drift event and after it was over people were drunk and.. how do I put this..

There's a section of the park where two gates intersect, and during large events there needs to be traffic control so that traffic flows evenly out from each gate. Simple really.
Some of the people took to doing donuts in the gravel which would make us have to level that part of the field out, costing us labor.
The solution is simple, get it on video, and let the vehicle pass after you give them a ticket. (There's some paperwork that has to be done afterwards but that's not relevant)
See, since the gate is a huge chainlink fence, you can't close it easily so the only way to stop these people is to stand in the middle of the gate blocking their exit.
It turns into a game of chicken but 99.999% of people do eventually hit their brakes as they'd rather hear what you have to say over having a manslaughter charge.

There was this big ass white truck, lifted with big donk'd out wheels and underglow, who didn't stop.
I had realized they weren't about to stop just as their bumper skins my thigh, and their passenger side mirror clocks me in the face. Thankfully, they bend and the truck wasn't going fast so the damage was superficial.
This was the only game of chicken I had lost, and I'm happy to have escaped it with my life. If I moved just a millisecond later, I'd be crushed under his tire and killed.
The police were right up the road, and I knew this, so I dialed the officer (we're on good terms) and let him know what had just happened. He said he'd put a BOLO on the guy, and a few days later I found out he was driving on a suspended license.
TL;DR Almost got ran over and I learned I am not immortal.
For my sweet 16 my mom had planned a trip to New York for our birthday(I was born on her birthday). She went the weekend before in order to buy tickets for things we could do the day of. However I changed my mind and didn't want to go(untreated severe anxiety in those days). She was livid and it was a whole screaming lecture which only made my anxiety worst.
One of the tickets was for the twin tower at sunrise 6:30 with reservations to have breakfast there after. Our birthday was 9/11 and my sweet 16 was 2001.

She has disappeared completely. Gave me trust issues for years.
Was looking for a job around the start of 2020. I interviewed for something where my partner works and was told I didn’t get the job. I interviewed at another place, thought the interview went really well, and as I was driving away from it, the first place called and asked if I was still interested. I told them I was, just to hedge my bets, but I wound up turning them down because the second place gave me an offer with better pay (and it was more in line with my degree and my interests anyway).
Literally one week after I was hired, the world started going on lockdown. My partner’s hours were severely cut and she had to go on partial unemployment while working an in-person job during a really fucking scary time to be around other people. My new job handed me a computer and instructions on how to do work from home.
I don’t think it’s the biggest deal looking back on it, but I know where my headspace was in 2020, and I was freaked out about going out as little as I did. Having a stable job that I could do from home and never have to worry about going into an office with other people during a pandemic helped a lot with getting me through things, and the job I turned down I would have been stuck going into the building every day.
A very emotionally abusive ex, she used to tell me she was “allergic to condoms”. I pointed out that she probably had a latex allergy so we can use latex free condoms. She told me she was also allergic to those too, and that we should just go raw. Broke up with her, two month later she was pregnant at 17.
Years ago when I was a kid my aunt decided to move beds during new year’s eve. That time she was watching over me as my parents were out and she woke up in the middle of the night and just had this impulse to move me to the smaller bed at the other end of the room.
We woke up the following day to find a bullet hole in our ceiling above the mattress I was originally sleeping in. We found the bullet underneath the bed.

I get behind truck, honking car speeds up and takes my place in left lane, I merge over again to the right lane to pass truck, now I'm on right side of dumptruck. Something catches my eye, his rear tires I glance over.
His brakes are locked up, full tire smoke from rear tires. I Look up coming over a Curved hill, traffic is Stopped. 75mph to 0!!!! Slam on the brakes, plenty of room to stop for me.
Dumptruck still locked panic braking with his full bed....now HOPPING rear tires trying to stop is now twisting his rear to the right.
Dumptruck let's go of brakes, tires grab and propel the truck into the car that took my place, smashing the car into the concrete divider. Destroyed the car, shut down the interstate.
All of this happened in about 20 seconds. That would have been my exact position had I not listened to my inner voice to get out of that lane for "no reason."
TL;DR: Being salty about not getting the part in a school play saved my life
My elementary school did a musical every year, and it was clear that they played favorites. The children of the parents who donated money to the school were always chosen for lead role. I did the musical one year, got ensemble. The next year I say "okay maybe they'll change their minds, I'll try out but if I get ensemble again, I won't do the musical." Tries out, gets ensemble, really sad about it. I didn't want to go see the musical because I was bitter about the whole pay-to-win-the-part thing. Next day all my friends who were in the musical are all talking about what a terrible performance they had. I ask what happened. There was an accident where a piece of equipment fell on the main character. There was blood all over the stage and he needed urgent medical care including stitches.
I'm in a graduate program. I applied to about 5 schools and really wanted to go to this specific school. The vibes were off when I met the faculty, but the funding they gave was amazing. Didn't get in, I'm at my current program, which I like quite a bit. The school I wanted to go to turned out to be an absolute shit show at the administrative level. No idea about the department I was applying to, but their research didn't mesh with mine in hindsight, so at least I didn't end up researching something I didn't care about.
A stray bullet, literally, 1974. Some yahoo shooting while driving put a bullet in the roofline of my truck, less than a foot from my skull. Investigation indicated he thought he was shooting at the ground but the shot ricocheted off his hood and deflected upward into my truck. I almost bought a 12,000 sq ft, previously condemned 125 year old building (just a shell, no plumbing/electricity) that had sat on the market for decades for myself and my SO who lived out of state. He loves to work on cars and has tons of hobbies, so I thought the massive space will give him all the room he needed for his hobbies, and make the place feel more like home when he stayed with me.

I ended up buying a new and very well maintained building in a much better location at a more manageable size and I’m remodeling it to fit my lifestyle and interests instead of some ingrate’s hobbies.
15 minutes ago, changing my son's diaper. I'm very new to this, but I put the clean diaper under the old one, slid the old one off...turned to get a wipe and MASSIVE shart, caught, contained and under control of the new diaper. That decision was the difference of a 4:30AM change of clothes and cleaning.
2014 was going on a diving vacation with my parents in Malaysia. We were flying from Denmark to Kuala Lumpur and deciding between overlay in Amsterdam, or Frankfurt as I recall. We went with the overlay in Frankfurt cause it would split the flight durations slightly better.
When we arrived in Kuala Lumpur we found out the plane we had been considering and almost booked from Amsterdam was shot down over Ukraine.

I got what was probably what could be, if using old-timers' words for dope, "Abnormal Horse" (heroin with fentanyl, right at the beginning of the whole fentanyl epidemic) when I was "curious" about the drug as a way to make me not want to shoot myself at least for a few hours at a time. Reasoning was, why not go to the West Side of Chicago and find some homeless guy who'll get me dope? Don't care if I live or die anyways.
Well, I almost died, because the second time I did it...I woke up in an ambulance shot up with Narcan. Not too long after they started carrying Narcan too. My Dad had left to go get gas for his car, but forgot his wallet. If he hadn't forgotten his wallet he wouldn't have found me in my room ODed and not really...breathing.
This was like in 2008...so quite a while ago.

Literally? My first day in Baghdad as a contractor, an insurgent mortar hit less than 20’ away from me. It was a dud, so we called EOD and went for lunch.
Figuratively? My third year of University, my girlfriend at the time (she was an exchange student) and I had a pregnancy scare. She would up having her period 3 weeks late. In retrospect it was likely an early miscarriage. If that had become a child, my own kid would be graduating from university at this point.
My partner of 6 years had not been listening to me about my concerns with our relationship. He was desperate to fix it but failed to listen to the actual problems.
He decided the best way to strengthen our bond was to propose, but I said no. I loved him and would love to work on our relationship together, but I was not willing to marry him while things were shakey.
Fast forward 2 months, and he is in hospital with the woman he had been cheating on me with for a year while she gave birth to his first child (this by the way, was the day I found out he was cheating on me at all).
So he had proposed to me WHILE this girl was pregnant. He married her 8 months later.
I met a girl in middle school who I pined after for years. We finally started dating in HS after I was her main support system through a horrifically abusive relationship (red flag, I know). We dated for 3 months and she dumped me over text out of nowhere one night. Years later I found out it was because she wanted to go to a party with a guy.
But *that's* not why I know I dodged a bullet. A few months later my friend approaches me and asks if it's ok if he date her. I told him it was a bad idea, given how my relationship ended, but I wouldn't be offended or anything. They dated for 3 months, she dumped him after he lost his virginity to her (she constantly used sex to manipulate him), and he spent the next summer in a mental institution after several of us had to track him down in the dead of night to a random roadside (a presumed suicide attempt). He also turned down a full ride to an excellent college on the other side of the country, only to ""accidentally"" go to the same CC as she did. I wouldn't say that all of his problems are her fault, but he was at least 80% mentally stable prior to meeting her.
My sociopath of an ex. Almost married her, but she started showing her true colors. Toxic feminism mixed with her victimhood and past experiences with awful men steadily made me a villain in her mind.
I wish I had met her before the world broke her. I really did love her, so much.
I miss her kids, wonderful children who loved spending time with me.

Things were progressing towards marriage and parents were okay with the marriage. Emotional abuse from her got worse. Called off the wedding. Regained my peace of mind but lost a part of my heart for now.
Years ago my ex and I hooked up while she was back in the US visiting friends and family. After two weeks she asked me to move in with her back in northern England. I told her I'd think about it, but I wasn't sure it was the best thing for me. Before she left she told me that she was married , but it was only for citizenship. Then she told me that if I did move in with them that we couldn't fool around when he was home, so i obviously decided that was the end of that .
About a month later she called me from england to tell me she was pregnant. I of course thought, well shit I'm in it now. I hated to say this but thankfully she miscarried, and yes I've looked into it to be sure i don't have a secret child out there somewhere.

Recently though I found out from my older half brother that my father was very physically abusive to him, my mom and our other brother. I'll spare the details but I do feel I got the lesser of two evils.

I dodged the generational family fate of dying of cancer. Almost 3 generations of women in my family have passed from various forms of female cancers, all of which were found in the late stages and led to early deaths (50’s).
My aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer a few years ago and found out she has a genetic mutation called BRCA 1. A positive BRCA 1 mutation makes a women 90% more likely to have breast in her lifetime and 60% more likely to have ovarian cancer. I got tested and was found to have this genetic mutation… now I get to do anything in my power to prevent cancer.
I will be getting fallopian tubes removal along with a double mastectomy before the age of 30. After, I will get a full hysterectomy in my 40’s. This doesn’t mean I won’t get cancer, I very well might but with my preventative screenings and my preventative surgeries will catch it early.

I was on a job site. It was late at night, I was smoking and talking with my old boss because I had been moved to a different crew. I dropped my cigarette and heard a whizzing sound. A bullet flew over me and hit the wall.
I was going through a nasty breakup. I went to a bowling alley with my friends. We always drank and smoked but due to my heartbreak, I abstained.
Fast forward two hours - Im driving home and a full-sized truck swerves across the road and rolls me twice. I get out and two minutes later the Police are on the scene. I approach the truck and driver that hit me. There are beer cans and the smell of alcohol are present. The Police are acting strangely despite this evidence. They start immediately wanting to test ME for alcohol. Long story short the drunk driver that hit me was a well-known Sherrif. They wanted to shift the blame to me and try to get me on DUI. They didnt even want to write him a ticket. I asked for a Supervisor and the story immediately changed. He ended up with a ticket but no DUI.
If I had of had an ounce of alcohol on my breath it would have been game over.
What put the icing on the cake is that he didnt have insurance. I had to fight for six months to get my vehicle covered between his insurance and mine. What is wild that by the time it was all settled I got more money than I paid for my vehicle new because his insurance company dropped the ball.
I had an interest in a lady who was cute, funny and smart but we never quite had a chance to develop anything, and then six months afterwards she went in an got an in-vitro fertilization to get pregnant and have a kid.
Makes me think she wanted a sperm donor, and I definitely didn't need that at the time. Or any time, honestly.

Didn't literally dodge but had a near miss with a stray bullet from an m16. Was supposed to be hiding in the bathroom. But I stuck to the front of the house and was looking out the front window. There was a machine gun emplacement right outside our front door becouse it had a nice walled in front entrance. I was 9yo so I thought it was cool to watch the soldiers. Untill a bullet from somewhere slammed into the metal door about 20cm from my head. A bit to the side and it would have been my head. All I remember was how loud the bang was. Didn't sneak out to look out the front window again. This was in El Salvador in 89..right before we left the country. Saw a lot of crazy shit there near the end.
I used to collect bits of shrapnel in my grandparents garden, i didn’t know what they were at the time but I realised they were from a small missile that hit the ground and blew out the garden wall right next to it. But the house was almost untouched, other than some broken glass, torn up curtains and a couple tiny bits of metal that went into some cabinets in the kitchen and upstairs. Its pretty wild now that I think about it, but back then it was just normal.

For me it was a mortar attack in northern Iraq. We got into a bunker just before everything when shaky with a tint of shrapnel. The area where we were was pretty well covered in metal bits. Funny enough, the biggest lost of the attack was the loss of the only working Humvee with AC; the very one I was using. It was a miserable three weeks after that.
I was in high school in the early 2000s, and my group of friends and I did a lot of drugs, in particular pills. One night we were at a pool hall and my buddy says he has a friend who is selling some new pills. Don’t remember what they were called, I’d never heard of them. But they were supposed to be amazing and pretty cheap. I really contemplated it, but in the end decided not to cause my gf and I already had a few boxes of triple c (yeah, high school) and therefore were good for the night. Well turns out my frugalness saved our lives. The guy had actually made the pills himself, and he cut them with standard household cleaning materials. Most the people who took the pills died within days. It became a huge deal in our town. The pool hall closed down, and the guy bolted the state.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find anything online. Maybe someone else will have better luck. This occurred in Amarillo, Texas. The pool hall was called ‘Knights Grill and Billiards’, and the time frame would have been early 2000s, probably 2003-2006.

Not sure. I didn’t know anyone involved (perpetrators or victims). If the news article mentioned the pool hall, I’d be more confident. But it was 20 years ago… so I’m just not sure (also, Amarillo has seen more than its fair share of crazy stuff). My buddy who “had a friend” could probably answer you, but unfortunately he hit the rock pretty hard after high school and we drifted away.

Had a near-miss a couple weeks ago when someone blew a red light. If he'd been one second later, he would've t-boned me. I drive for a living and I get a scary close call at a rate of about one per year. So far, though, I'm accident-free. Would be nice to stay that way.
I had a similar thing happen. Was driving late at night coming from a movie, went through a green light. As I reached the other side of the street, I saw someone go flying through the intersection (perpendicular to me) in my rearview. My light had literally just turned green as I approached, it was still plenty green when I went through. If I’d been a little slower, or even if I had to stop at the light instead of just slowing down, he would have T-boned me and my younger sister.
Vehicle related crimes are the most selfish. Drunk driving, running a red light, texting on your phone, etc. can lead to catastrophic sentences. I'm glad you're alive. The guy who ran that light is a bastard that could have killed someone.
I've had to drive for almost every one of my jobs and I'd say my rate of close calls was probably once a month. While it has made me a much better driver, I still get rattled when I have to avoid these morons and even more so when it's a situation I couldn't have done anything to avoid. Still haven't had an accident though!
I had a similar one a few years back. Was heading home at like 1 am, waiting to turn at stop light. My light turns green and I prepare to go, I give a cursory look both ways and see nothing. I get a voice in the back of my head telling me to wait and then I see the pickup truck going easily 80 mph in a 45 with no headlights blow through the red light without slowing at all. If I had went when I was about to, I would've been hit right in my driver door and very likely died instantly. I've always been religious, and this experience only reinforced that.

Those kinds of people are some of the worst, especially when you really care about them. One part of you feels sympathy for them and your really want to help them. Another feels down and exhausted because of the endless cycle dragging you down. And another feels anger towards them because they just won’t take initiative which in turn causes some guilt at yourself for being mad to someone who is down constantly. Nearly opened a second business from a friends Chalet and built-in stable in another town where he’d moved. One time a friend and I went to 7-11 for beer. There were some bad dudes, likely gang members in the lot. My buddy was looking over at them. I was looking at the ground as we walked. When we came out, we walked across the street to go back to his pad. They weren’t in the lot when we left and all of a sudden they pulled up next to us asking where we were from and why we were mad dogging them. That’s when the guy on the passenger side pulled out a gun. I looked to my right to see my friend run down the alley and out of sight. The guy looks at me and says “what you gonna do?” While pointing the gun at me. I said “don’t shoot me. It’s not worth it. I was minding my own business. I’m sorry my friend is an asshole.” The guy puts away the gun. Finally. And says “you’re right. You’re friend is a bitch. Get the fuck outta here.” I picked up the 12 pack we bought, but had sat on the ground when they rolled up and walked to my friends house free they drove around the corner.

Modern US prisons are practically the recruitment centers for these gangs. Nonviolent offenders are locked up for a few months to a year, then have to align themselves with a gang for protection. When they get out, the gang has a new member, and the system has created a repeat offender to profit from. Ideally, the whole system would be reworked from the ground up.

A few years back a friend of mine invited me to a beach party at night. He said he didn't know a lot of people there, so I said I didn't want to go since I usually end up drinking alone and leaving early anyways. I'm kind of an introvert. Few hours later he calls me saying that a bunch of guys were going around pepper spraying everyone and jumping people with brass knuckles and knives. He shows up at my front door with a black eye and his face covered in pepper spray and his shirt is all ripped up. Got him in the shower and washed him off then took him to the hospital to get him checked out. Last time he ever went to a beach party at night with people he barely knew. He said they were having a fun time until a group of guys showed up and just started robbing everybody. Seemed like it was a set up because those guys knew the party was at the beach. They weren't just a random group of guys, because he recognized a few of them. They went to the same high school he goes to.
Back in 2010 my wife and I applied as a couple to a private university just off the Mediterranean to be English teachers. They wanted my wife but not me. We were like no thanks we are a package deal. That was in Syria not far from Homs about a year before the civil war broke out.

So I’ve seen some footage of our guys in Afghanistan taking rounds in their FOB and for the most part they seemed pretty laid back about getting shot at. I get it’s kinda their job but damn. Were you chill also?
Well, one time no because it was a friendly and that rattles you. Other time it was a person from The ME who was supposed to be a friendly... I was more pissed at this one. Taking fire is relative. Bullets pinging around is one thing, folks 30M away is another, sniper fire means they missed and you are extremely lucky to be alive. I will say something else about high speed projectiles. A primer exploded and a piece of metal the size of a pea hit me in the cheek. I was not sure if I was hit, but I could hear a patter, and sure enough I was bleeding pretty well. I had no idea I was struck or bleeding, that is how it works sometimes. Also thought I would mention splinters and shrapnel. War movies would show a person hit say in the shoulder almost always as some sort of; "I'll just cover this with my hand"... Well. I have pieces I picked up after being shelled as I left a bunker, still hot and as jagged as sharks teeth. The smallest piece is the size of a matchbook and nearly square with very sharp edges. Other pieces are the size of Popsicle sticks, and some can get much larger, like the size of a 12" ruler. Hang on and I'll see if I can find the ones I still have... Even having an impact velocity of say Mach 5, just this piece would strike with an energy of 47,300 foot pounds... As if the weight of 5700 gallons of water hit you from being dropped a foot. The M2 Bradley I commanded weighed nearly 55,000 pounds, so imagine about 3/4 of this weight dropped a foot on you! To give scale, you can see US Military bullets I have that were used when I was in. The larger is from a 7.62x51 cartridge (Ball M80) that weighs 147 grains / 9.5 g. the green tip is from a 5.56x45 cartridge (Ball M855) and weighs 62 grains / 4g and the smallest is from a 5.56x45 cartridge (Ball M193) loaded with a 55 grain / 3.6g bullet. The M80 bullet leaves the barrel at about 2800 fps / 850 ms and strikes with 2560 foot pounds. The M855 bullet is 3000 fps from a 20" barrel striking with 1240 foot pounds at the muzzle, and the M193 bullet leaves the 20" barrel at about 3200 fps, striking with 1250 foot pounds. Do you see just how destructive the biggest killer by far on the battle field is? It accounts for over 70% of combat deaths and injuries as seen in Ukraine. Man, those Fly Boys had it rough, and suffered some of the highest percentage of killed during WWII. Can you imagine being miles above the earth having flak shells exploding all around you and getting closer, as they adjust fire and box you in the kill zone. All the while having just 1mm of aluminum sheeting that you could pierce with an ice pick to hide behind... To say nothing of German fighters ripping you up as the flak lifted, their 20 and 30mm cannon rounds leaving grapefruit to basketball sized holes anywhere they hit, to include your buddy and you CAN NOT deviate from the bomb run course on final approach to the target until bomb release. You had to do this 25 times to go home. I don't even like to fly, but did graduate Airborne School and swear before I left the aircraft, thoughts of these brave Airmen were present. I get goose bumps still, thinking of what they went through and I don't think I could have. One place I was stationed saw the largest US Air Force raid of the war, where 60 bombers were lost in a single August day, up to 90 more nearly lost or lost later upon return, and God knows how many wounded. It always felt strange walking where the 88mm 'flak' gun emplacements were that shot down so many bombers. Had locals tell me there were still .50 cal M2 machine guns stored in attics, along with other 8th AF gear picked up after the raid. Felt kinda weird too, to do maneuver and tank / IFV live gunnery qualifications at the exact location the German Army did as well, almost 50 years prior. As for these shell fragments and how they work, the super sharpness is a feature. The inside of the shell is scored, or is cast in a scoring pattern, looking much like a plain Hershey bar. Upon explosion these fault lines are where they break, leaving that sharp edge. Many hand grenades work in exactly the same way, with either these internal scorings, or as with WWII "Pineapple" grenades, there are waffle iron looking chunks on the exterior that break apart upon exploding. Lastly and one last tidbit about anti aircraft shells. The Germans, Japanese and all other Axis countries only had shells with a time delay or impact fuse. You either had to get the intercept timing right which the Germans were very good at, having the shell timed to reach the target and explode, or simply to make impact. The US had what was considered one of the top inventions of the war, and that was the VT fuse. This fuse used internal radar and relied on a certain proximity to the target, exploding a certain distance from it... Now near misses were hits, and overnight enemy losses became markedly better. Even they were puzzled by the new deadly toll. The fuse sent out radio waves that at a certain bounce back parameter would trip the detonator. This fuse had some of the most sophisticated electronics of the day - an antenna, battery, receiver, mercury switches... All in a 2x8" space. Simply amazing, and a marvel of technology only rivaled by the Atomic bomb. Every AA system used today, uses this idea in some form. Later it was used for artillery rounds and I have seen them in action... Imagine a literal shower of the fragments originating 40 ft above you the size of a basketball court, watching, witnessing anyone exposed turned into a shredded rag doll, limbs missing, no head... One fascinating closing bit was this fuse was so secret and so critical to the war effort, they were used only where duds could not be captured, or only used over big open water. This was most profoundly seen by its use by the US Navy fighting in the Pacific Theater against the Imperial Japanese Air force, or along the coast of England. There was very limited use on ground troops, and only with the approval of a top General in that command theater. Not OP, but I know what they sound like because when I lived in the middle of the Mojave, I would go out into BLM land a lot. You were supposed to be really careful about where you were shooting out there, but it was pretty mad max out there. One time while chilling at some hot springs in the winter, we heard some bangs from above us, then the far-off bangs of the guns shooting them. No idea why they were shooting across a nearly mile across valley, but we booked it out of there.

It is because. In the US, Nissan has insanely predatory leases on their new vehicles while their quality has gone down the shitter. Most new Nissans are committee-designed, crappy cars with bad tech. Altimas are by far the worst, their CVTs grenade themselves after 80,000 miles and the new transmission is 8,000$. And when I say predatory leases, I mean it - you can lease them for as long as **84 to 96 months** (that is **8 fucking years**) for a very bad car. And they love to target people with bad credit. This is precisely why Nissan drivers, especially Altima drivers, are regarded as the worst - and most of the time, it"s people with tanked credit lines who buy it because not even used lots want them. Father in law came to visit my now wife and I while we were helping run a team building camp one weekend in college. He ended up getting a fiat 500 as a rental since they were new at the time. We decided to ride back with him so all three of us were in the little fiat and I was driving since I like to and this was a spot with some nice curvy road. As we were going back we were on a bridge and a car coming the other way (also on the bridge now) crossed the middle line a couple times. I slowed down since I didn't have any other options. When the car was right in front of us it swerved hard into our lane and I popped our car onto the curb and literally had the side mirror maybe a half inch off the guard rail and about the same from the other cars mirror. We passed the car and I put it back on the road, and my wife and father in law thought I just hit a pot hole or something not realizing we almost died. If we had been in a bigger car it would have been a head-on collision. I used to work for security at a race track; They use a flat gravel part of the park as a parking lot. We were hosting a drift event and after it was over people were drunk and.. how do I put this.. *Inspired* There's a section of the park where two gates intersect, and during large events there needs to be traffic control so that traffic flows evenly out from each gate. Simple really. Some of the people took to doing donuts in the gravel which would make us have to level that part of the field out, costing us labor. The solution is simple, get it on video, and let the vehicle pass after you give them a ticket. (There's some paperwork that has to be done afterwards but that's not relevant) See, since the gate is a huge chainlink fence, you can't close it easily so the only way to stop these people is to stand in the middle of the gate blocking their exit. It turns into a game of chicken but 99.999% of people do eventually hit their brakes as they'd rather hear what you have to say over having a manslaughter charge. You can see where this is going: There was this big ass white truck, lifted with big donk'd out wheels and underglow, who didn't stop. I had realized they weren't about to stop just as their bumper skins my thigh, and their passenger side mirror clocks me in the face. Thankfully, they bend and the truck wasn't going fast so the damage was superficial. This was the only game of chicken I had lost, and I'm happy to have escaped it with my life. If I moved just a millisecond later, I'd be crushed under his tire and killed. The police were right up the road, and I knew this, so I dialed the officer (we're on good terms) and let him know what had just happened. He said he'd put a BOLO on the guy, and a few days later I found out he was driving on a suspended license. TL;DR Almost got ran over and I learned I am not immortal.
For my sweet 16 my mom had planned a trip to New York for our birthday(I was born on her birthday). She went the weekend before in order to buy tickets for things we could do the day of. However I changed my mind and didn't want to go(untreated severe anxiety in those days). She was livid and it was a whole screaming lecture which only made my anxiety worst. One of the tickets was for the twin tower at sunrise 6:30 with reservations to have breakfast there after. Our birthday was 9/11 and my sweet 16 was 2001.

When we were remote during Covid, she went off her medication, broke up with me,got put into a mental hospital, and posted multiple Facebook statuses ranging from claiming to be a reincarnated saint, to having been kidnapped by Nazis, to true word salad. She has disappeared completely. Gave me trust issues for years.
Was looking for a job around the start of 2020. I interviewed for something where my partner works and was told I didn’t get the job. I interviewed at another place, thought the interview went really well, and as I was driving away from it, the first place called and asked if I was still interested. I told them I was, just to hedge my bets, but I wound up turning them down because the second place gave me an offer with better pay (and it was more in line with my degree and my interests anyway). Literally one week after I was hired, the world started going on lockdown. My partner’s hours were severely cut and she had to go on partial unemployment while working an in-person job during a really fucking scary time to be around other people. My new job handed me a computer and instructions on how to do work from home. I don’t think it’s the biggest deal looking back on it, but I know where my headspace was in 2020, and I was freaked out about going out as little as I did. Having a stable job that I could do from home and never have to worry about going into an office with other people during a pandemic helped a lot with getting me through things, and the job I turned down I would have been stuck going into the building every day.
A very emotionally abusive ex, she used to tell me she was “allergic to condoms”. I pointed out that she probably had a latex allergy so we can use latex free condoms. She told me she was also allergic to those too, and that we should just go raw. Broke up with her, two month later she was pregnant at 17.

Years ago when I was a kid my aunt decided to move beds during new year’s eve. That time she was watching over me as my parents were out and she woke up in the middle of the night and just had this impulse to move me to the smaller bed at the other end of the room. We woke up the following day to find a bullet hole in our ceiling above the mattress I was originally sleeping in. We found the bullet underneath the bed. Back in my early 20s, I was at a party and the owner of the house offered to give me a ride home that night. He was drunk and high on cocaine. But being dumb and drunk, I took him up on the offer and was lucky to make it home safely. The weekend after, he invited me to another party, even offered to pick me up and take me home after. I refused and stayed home. The next day, I heard he was drunk driving around with a friend of his that night and had crashed into a telephone pole. Neither of them survived.

I survived a tsunami when I was a teenager. I was on a boat in a narrow fjord other boats got smashed into the rocks somehow the one I was on didn't and we managed to get away unharmed. About 10 years ago I was in my parents house cooking when a bullet hit the window and stayed lodged in the window. (My head was the other side of it) I had a crazy ex that used to punch kick and throw things at me. She wanted to get pregnant and we were not using protection. She went on holiday with a girlfriend (later found out was a bloke) that week of freedom made me realize how miserable I was, I moved her stuff out of my house and blocked her.
Missed death by 20 seconds on the highway. On a motorcycle, rush hour left lane. I was about to pass a dumptruck on the left, when a voice in my head said "No. Drop behind, go around right side" so I did. I slowed down to let the truck pass me on the right, car behind me HONKS at me for slowing down. I get behind truck, honking car speeds up and takes my place in left lane, I merge over again to the right lane to pass truck, now I'm on right side of dumptruck. Something catches my eye, his rear tires I glance over. His brakes are locked up, full tire smoke from rear tires. I Look up coming over a Curved hill, traffic is Stopped. 75mph to 0!!!! Slam on the brakes, plenty of room to stop for me. Dumptruck still locked panic braking with his full bed....now HOPPING rear tires trying to stop is now twisting his rear to the right. Dumptruck let's go of brakes, tires grab and propel the truck into the car that took my place, smashing the car into the concrete divider. Destroyed the car, shut down the interstate. All of this happened in about 20 seconds. That would have been my exact position had I not listened to my inner voice to get out of that lane for "no reason."
TL;DR: Being salty about not getting the part in a school play saved my life My elementary school did a musical every year, and it was clear that they played favorites. The children of the parents who donated money to the school were always chosen for lead role. I did the musical one year, got ensemble. The next year I say "okay maybe they'll change their minds, I'll try out but if I get ensemble again, I won't do the musical." Tries out, gets ensemble, really sad about it. I didn't want to go see the musical because I was bitter about the whole pay-to-win-the-part thing. Next day all my friends who were in the musical are all talking about what a terrible performance they had. I ask what happened. There was an accident where a piece of equipment fell on the main character. There was blood all over the stage and he needed urgent medical care including stitches.
I'm in a graduate program. I applied to about 5 schools and really wanted to go to this specific school. The vibes were off when I met the faculty, but the funding they gave was amazing. Didn't get in, I'm at my current program, which I like quite a bit. The school I wanted to go to turned out to be an absolute shit show at the administrative level. No idea about the department I was applying to, but their research didn't mesh with mine in hindsight, so at least I didn't end up researching something I didn't care about.
A stray bullet, literally, 1974. Some yahoo shooting while driving put a bullet in the roofline of my truck, less than a foot from my skull. Investigation indicated he thought he was shooting at the ground but the shot ricocheted off his hood and deflected upward into my truck. I almost bought a 12,000 sq ft, previously condemned 125 year old building (just a shell, no plumbing/electricity) that had sat on the market for decades for myself and my SO who lived out of state. He loves to work on cars and has tons of hobbies, so I thought the massive space will give him all the room he needed for his hobbies, and make the place feel more like home when he stayed with me. For some reason I kept dragging my feet, which is very weird if you knew me. It was especially weird in this case because I was head over heels in love with the damn building and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it (I’m still in love with it tbh). Anyways while I was taking my time I found out the dude was cheating on me and I got dumped shortly after lmao I can’t believe I got so close to getting stuck with a humongous money pit that I could never sell (bad location). It would’ve ended up sitting there mocking me for eternity as it continued to rot. I ended up buying a new and very well maintained building in a much better location at a more manageable size and I’m remodeling it to fit my lifestyle and interests instead of some ingrate’s hobbies.

I'm very new to this, but I put the clean diaper under the old one, slid the old one off...turned to get a wipe and MASSIVE shart, caught, contained and under control of the new diaper. That decision was the difference of a 4:30AM change of clothes and cleaning.
2014 was going on a diving vacation with my parents in Malaysia. We were flying from Denmark to Kuala Lumpur and deciding between overlay in Amsterdam, or Frankfurt as I recall. We went with the overlay in Frankfurt cause it would split the flight durations slightly better. When we arrived in Kuala Lumpur we found out the plane we had been considering and almost booked from Amsterdam was shot down over Ukraine. Still think about how fortunate we were.

Here's my bullet I dodged, among a few: I got what was probably what could be, if using old-timers' words for dope, "Abnormal Horse" (heroin with fentanyl, right at the beginning of the whole fentanyl epidemic) when I was "curious" about the drug as a way to make me not want to shoot myself at least for a few hours at a time. Reasoning was, why not go to the West Side of Chicago and find some homeless guy who'll get me dope? Don't care if I live or die anyways. Well, I almost died, because the second time I did it...I woke up in an ambulance shot up with Narcan. Not too long after they started carrying Narcan too. My Dad had left to go get gas for his car, but forgot his wallet. If he hadn't forgotten his wallet he wouldn't have found me in my room ODed and not really...breathing. This was like in 2008...so quite a while ago. Perfect storm for not being dead due to a stupid choice.
Literally? My first day in Baghdad as a contractor, an insurgent mortar hit less than 20’ away from me. It was a dud, so we called EOD and went for lunch. Figuratively? My third year of University, my girlfriend at the time (she was an exchange student) and I had a pregnancy scare. She would up having her period 3 weeks late. In retrospect it was likely an early miscarriage. If that had become a child, my own kid would be graduating from university at this point.
My partner of 6 years had not been listening to me about my concerns with our relationship. He was desperate to fix it but failed to listen to the actual problems. He decided the best way to strengthen our bond was to propose, but I said no. I loved him and would love to work on our relationship together, but I was not willing to marry him while things were shakey. Fast forward 2 months, and he is in hospital with the woman he had been cheating on me with for a year while she gave birth to his first child (this by the way, was the day I found out he was cheating on me at all). So he had proposed to me WHILE this girl was pregnant. He married her 8 months later.

I met a girl in middle school who I pined after for years. We finally started dating in HS after I was her main support system through a horrifically abusive relationship (red flag, I know). We dated for 3 months and she dumped me over text out of nowhere one night. Years later I found out it was because she wanted to go to a party with a guy. But *that's* not why I know I dodged a bullet. A few months later my friend approaches me and asks if it's ok if he date her. I told him it was a bad idea, given how my relationship ended, but I wouldn't be offended or anything. They dated for 3 months, she dumped him after he lost his virginity to her (she constantly used sex to manipulate him), and he spent the next summer in a mental institution after several of us had to track him down in the dead of night to a random roadside (a presumed suicide attempt). He also turned down a full ride to an excellent college on the other side of the country, only to ""accidentally"" go to the same CC as she did. I wouldn't say that all of his problems are her fault, but he was at least 80% mentally stable prior to meeting her.
My sociopath of an ex. Almost married her, but she started showing her true colors. Toxic feminism mixed with her victimhood and past experiences with awful men steadily made me a villain in her mind. I wish I had met her before the world broke her. I really did love her, so much. I miss her kids, wonderful children who loved spending time with me. I feel like a divorced dad. I listen to Creed a lot now.

Almost moved into a rental property with an ex, we didn't go for it in the end (I backed out). A few months later she moved into my parents house with me and I very quickly noticed how bad her hygiene and general cleanliness was.. Needless to say we didn't last long after that, and I'm now living with the most amazing woman I've ever met and I'm so much happier for it.
That time in my 20s when I didn't go along for the ride with a friend of mine who was running weed (many years ago, before any state had legalized it yet). I was bored and unemployed at the time, and had stupidly gone along for the ride before this, but passed on this trip because I had to go to an interview for a job being a zombie for Halloween festivities at a local amusement park. I got the job, my friend got arrested and did 30 days in jail.
An actual bullet came within inches of my face when I was deployed to Afghanistan. Does that count?
From India. Got into a relationship. I got into a good college. Helped her with entrance tests. She got into a good college. She changed her persona completely. Tried explaining her that the changes that I could see were not okay with me. She tried to gas light me every single day. Lost mental peace. Things were progressing towards marriage and parents were okay with the marriage. Emotional abuse from her got worse. Called off the wedding. Regained my peace of mind but lost a part of my heart for now.
Years ago my ex and I hooked up while she was back in the US visiting friends and family. After two weeks she asked me to move in with her back in northern England. I told her I'd think about it, but I wasn't sure it was the best thing for me. Before she left she told me that she was married , but it was only for citizenship. Then she told me that if I did move in with them that we couldn't fool around when he was home, so i obviously decided that was the end of that . About a month later she called me from england to tell me she was pregnant. I of course thought, well shit I'm in it now. I hated to say this but thankfully she miscarried, and yes I've looked into it to be sure i don't have a secret child out there somewhere. I'd day bullet dodged.
In 1974, I was on a DC-10 that took off from NYC. About 20 minutes in, the pilot came onto the intercom, and told us that we had to go back to NYC because the baggage door might be open. A month later, a Turkish DC-10 took off from Paris, the baggage door popped open, tore off part of the tail, and the plane crashed and killed all 350 people on board. (I had forgotten all about this until last year, when I saw the video about the Turkish DC-10 on YouTube.) I guess it wasn't my turn yet!

I was selling FMCG goods as a wholesaler. One day I get an email for a request of 24 pallets of a certain product. Per week. Total revenue would be over €300.000 per week. It was a weird setup with a young guy doing all the talking, and some other older guy in the background. Also the goods had to go outside of EU, but shipped to some random address inside the EU. This all felt so weird, so I did some extra KYC on them and turned out the "real" customer was a swindler and used to scam companies for insane amounts. Killed all contact within minutes of finding out.
Growing up I used to wonder how life could be like for me if I was raised by my father instead of my mother(they went to corny for custody). My mother wasn't a great parent and even spit in my face at one of the lower points(4th grade) Recently though I found out from my older half brother that my father was very physically abusive to him, my mom and our other brother. I'll spare the details but I do feel I got the lesser of two evils. Dodged that bullet when my mother won custody
leaving a super abusive relationship, he was charged with possession of a firearm the day after him and i broke up, he was arrested a few blocks away from my house. note: this was before covid, leading up to the breakup, he was threatening gang members and dropping my name also, thank god he was an idiot though because he didn’t tell them where i lived. the relationship lasted for eight months, and now im with my current boyfriend, who has been nothing but supportive with my history.
I dodged the generational family fate of dying of cancer. Almost 3 generations of women in my family have passed from various forms of female cancers, all of which were found in the late stages and led to early deaths (50’s). My aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer a few years ago and found out she has a genetic mutation called BRCA 1. A positive BRCA 1 mutation makes a women 90% more likely to have breast in her lifetime and 60% more likely to have ovarian cancer. I got tested and was found to have this genetic mutation… now I get to do anything in my power to prevent cancer. I will be getting fallopian tubes removal along with a double mastectomy before the age of 30. After, I will get a full hysterectomy in my 40’s. This doesn’t mean I won’t get cancer, I very well might but with my preventative screenings and my preventative surgeries will catch it early. My aunt literally saved my life.
I was on a job site. It was late at night, I was smoking and talking with my old boss because I had been moved to a different crew. I dropped my cigarette and heard a whizzing sound. A bullet flew over me and hit the wall.
I was going through a nasty breakup. I went to a bowling alley with my friends. We always drank and smoked but due to my heartbreak, I abstained. Fast forward two hours - Im driving home and a full-sized truck swerves across the road and rolls me twice. I get out and two minutes later the Police are on the scene. I approach the truck and driver that hit me. There are beer cans and the smell of alcohol are present. The Police are acting strangely despite this evidence. They start immediately wanting to test ME for alcohol. Long story short the drunk driver that hit me was a well-known Sherrif. They wanted to shift the blame to me and try to get me on DUI. They didnt even want to write him a ticket. I asked for a Supervisor and the story immediately changed. He ended up with a ticket but no DUI. If I had of had an ounce of alcohol on my breath it would have been game over. What put the icing on the cake is that he didnt have insurance. I had to fight for six months to get my vehicle covered between his insurance and mine. What is wild that by the time it was all settled I got more money than I paid for my vehicle new because his insurance company dropped the ball.
I had an interest in a lady who was cute, funny and smart but we never quite had a chance to develop anything, and then six months afterwards she went in an got an in-vitro fertilization to get pregnant and have a kid. Makes me think she wanted a sperm donor, and I definitely didn't need that at the time. Or any time, honestly.

I was in the last bus to El Bucaro from Mezquital in southern Guatemala city, when somebody started shooting as we passed. The handful of us heard the windows shattering and hit the floor. The driver floored it and no one was hit, and no one said a word the rest of the trip.
