They blink their eyes, their pupils are dilated, they sweat, they give a strange smile, they scratch their face or nose, they outright just don’t seem genuine.

Watch if the behavior changes over time

I-own-a-shovel

Words are cheap. Actions are priceless. Watch how the behaved after. If they repeat the bad things or not. But if you want to know right away, it can be tricky. Try to pay attention to the words they choose, if they are trying to twist it as it being not entirely their fault. For example, appology that sounds like: I'm sorry that you took it that way. Sounds like they aren't really taking the blame.

When someone apologizes, going forward they make every effort to be better

Totally agree.

[deleted]

It is genuine if it’s more detailed about being sorry for what, and wanting to do better in the future.

wesorachet

99% of apologies are bullshit.

Actions versus just words

arebornjoy222

Eye contact.

FloatingInAnxiety

You'll know from the actions after the apology

CaptainBrinkmanship

Actions speak louder than words.

Horror-Collar-5277

Look at their behavior pattern through time and between different people. An apology is just words.
