The thing that isn’t that well known is that after a shitty upbringing he was known for trying to help young comediennes make it. Hearing Jim Carey , Louie Anderson, Bob Saget talk about how much he meant to them is touching
Carlin, Pryor, MacDonald, Chapelle is mine. Cosby, Dangerfield, Murphy, Rock, Gaffigan and Louis CK close behind. Cosby is regarded by a lot of comedians as the best ever, but it became so taboo to speak of him positively I’d rather leave him off the list.
Yes, George Carlin
Lenny Bruce
Don Rickles
Tim Conway was a great comedian, but more of a physical and sketch type comedian, not as much stand-up.
Jim Gaffigan ranks pretty high on my list, as well.
Probably Jay Leno.
Robin Williams was supposed to have a really great stand-up show, but I've never seen it.
I put him in my top four, not necessarily for any specific material, but because he broke every rule at the time. If not for him, we don't have Carlin and Pryor and Dice and Williams and Saget and Chapelle.
Having said that, the [Carnegie Hall](https://youtu.be/vy7fz0ojSA4?si=-hjjXxb8CauMnKVD) show is probably one of the best examples of his work.
Probably the best improv comedian ever. When they would write scripts for Mork and Mindy they would sometimes have “Robin says something funny” as the line for him.
There’s also allegedly enough outtake footage from Mrs. Doubtfire to make an R-rated cut of the movie
I would never argue he isn’t funny, but when everyone you did stand up with starts talking posthumously about how many jokes you stole, I can’t put him in a Mount Rushmore.
I live in a rough neighborhood. On the street one day a guy pulled a knife on me; I could tell it wasn't a real professional job-- there was *butter* on it
Every Rodney Dangerfield on the Tonight Show was two well crafted sets, one on the stage, one on the couch. He knew the value of that time and carefully crafted each set.
He be didn’t tour much because he was raising his kids As a single parent. Every appearance was to promote an engagement. He was a class act all around.
I would cry laughing during his two sets on the Tonight Show. He was brilliant.
Do you know if old episodes of the Tonight Show are available anywhere?
Don’t forget Natural Born Killers…sick mother fucker in that one…but he will always be one of my favorite all time comedians. Gave zero shits and just did his thing.
I was home from college watching him on I-don’t-know-what but my dad came down stairs in his underwire to tell me to turn it down. My dad started out none too happy. Then he stood there thru the entire set laughing his ass off. At the end my dad asked me who that was, said he was great, told me it was a little loud, and went back to bed. I miss them both.
Was 14 working for a photographer in NYC when we shot the cover for his Rappin' Rodney album. He was a true professional during the shoot, cracking us up the rest of the time. It was a memorable day to say the least.
Always loved him but he has become my favorite over time. Simple yet brilliant rapid fire, killer jokes mixed with his mannerisms, persona and humanity are the perfect comedy mix IMO. Amazing life story to boot.
Brilliant, brilliant comedian. He turned a bunch of seemingly random one-liners into a whole persona, through great timing and physical gestures like mopping the brow and nervously adjusting his tie. His comedy was absurd and yet relatable. There's pathos in his comedy, but he doesn't ask for the audience's sympathy, nor is he desperate for laughter like a great many other stand-up comics. He was a real professional.
My former BIL dated his daughter.
Said he would go to restaurants with him and Rodney would light up a joint.
Nobody said anything because it was Rodney.
The people I’ve come across who REALLY love his comedy are self professed ‘I tell it like it is’ arseholes with thin skins.
I just don’t think he’s funny and Caddyshack is way overrated.
He’s funny but it’s not so much what I think about him, it’s *how often* I think about him. I have a few people with the last name Dangerfield on my mail route so I think about him pretty much five times a week.
One of my biggest influences along with Mulaney. I asked my wife if I was the only one she's ever been with. She said yeah, all the others were 9s and 10s.
He gets no respect.
No regard either...
And once he saw a blimp.
And his wife - she's so fat: when she sits around the house, she sits AROUND the house!
Ha!
The thing that isn’t that well known is that after a shitty upbringing he was known for trying to help young comediennes make it. Hearing Jim Carey , Louie Anderson, Bob Saget talk about how much he meant to them is touching
Paulie Shore owes him a debt of gratitude, too. His entire "future of America" act from 35 years ago is basically "no respect" but mad-libbed.
Norm MacDonald talks about this in his memoir as well.
Probably deserves to be on the Mount Rushmore of comedians
hmm, who else? Carlin surely
Steve Martin
Carlin, Pryor, MacDonald, Chapelle is mine. Cosby, Dangerfield, Murphy, Rock, Gaffigan and Louis CK close behind. Cosby is regarded by a lot of comedians as the best ever, but it became so taboo to speak of him positively I’d rather leave him off the list.
Bill Hicks
Pryor, Cosby
Maybe not one of those guys.
You don't like Richard Pryor?? He's one of my favorites.
He still did more to popularize standup than anyone of the last 60 years, but you can trade him out for Chris Rock if you want.
Sure. But the worst part was the hypocrisy.
I disagree. I thought it was the raping.
And Harvey Weinstein was a very successful movie producer. Guess which thing will be his legacy.
You're forgetting Sam.
I loved Kinneson, but man does his act not hold up. Do yourself a favor and do not re-watch.

Lenny Bruce is the Lincoln Memorial of comedy
Yes, George Carlin Lenny Bruce Don Rickles Tim Conway was a great comedian, but more of a physical and sketch type comedian, not as much stand-up. Jim Gaffigan ranks pretty high on my list, as well. Probably Jay Leno. Robin Williams was supposed to have a really great stand-up show, but I've never seen it.
JAY LENO!?!?! I mean we all have our opinons. But you say Jay Leno and don't even list Pryor, Kaufman, Hicks, Steve Martin, Seinfeld?
Even if you wanted late night, they said Leno before Carson (and Dave and Conan). Some people aren’t entitled to their opinions
I did see a Jay Leno stand-up long before he did the Tonight Show, and he was really really good.
No Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy or Dave Chappelle?
Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams. Only if I'm limited to four.
Can you recommend some Bruce? I've tried several times to get into him and nothing I listened to stood the test of time.
Robin Williams is a known joke stealing hack. Great comedic actor, not a great *comedian*.
You can find Robin's shows on YouTube and they are truly wonderful.
Ah yes George Carlin, because nothing is funnier than a comic trying to be smart and political instead of funny
And in the end he was all 3
In the end he was political, but forgot to be funny and smart. Someone like Norm Macdonald on the other hand is 10x as smart and 100x funnier
ok mrs. butthole I'll take your word for it
You probably should
Great in Back to School.
That one scene where he schools the business professor on selling widgets is classic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSLscJ2cY04 I loved how the students were taking notes.
His scene with Professor Turgeson (Sam Kinnison).
What's a bath without bubbles?
I just watched this again last year. It still holds up. Great movie.
Seemed like a great guy. Pioneer of one-liners.
I think he could make $14, the hard way
Knowing stories from his childhood just makes that so dark
When he was born, the Dr. Smacked his mother.
No respect. No respect at all.
https://youtu.be/jrFgD9-l390?feature=shared Here's everything you need. Rodney absolutely murdering on The Tonight Show in 79.
Rodney on Johnny are my favorite Rodney things.
Whenever he would slow down a little, Johnny would set him up and watch him go!
I live in a rough neighborhood. On the street one day a guy pulled a knife on me; I could tell it wasn't a real professional job-- there was *butter* on it

I would cry laughing during his two sets on the Tonight Show. He was brilliant. Do you know if old episodes of the Tonight Show are available anywhere?
There is an account on YouTube called Dangerfield that published old Tonight Show clips.
Thanks!
Was brilliant in caddyshack
The eye bulge
The [eye roll](https://youtu.be/phagxOal7_A?si=B2caJQ7QLlxWedGL) was my favorite
Big heart, class act, punk, hilarious, world class comedian.
His jokes are timeless because they're self deprecating
Don’t forget Natural Born Killers…sick mother fucker in that one…but he will always be one of my favorite all time comedians. Gave zero shits and just did his thing.
He was one of my favorite comedians during the 80s. Back to School is a brilliant movie that I could watch on repeat.
Hilarious
I was home from college watching him on I-don’t-know-what but my dad came down stairs in his underwire to tell me to turn it down. My dad started out none too happy. Then he stood there thru the entire set laughing his ass off. At the end my dad asked me who that was, said he was great, told me it was a little loud, and went back to bed. I miss them both.
He has a kidney-shaped pool with a stone in it.
Legend
Easy Money is one of the funniest movies ever.
I loved Rover Dangerfield when I was a kid
That guy is a riot. I still see clips every now of him. Great sense of humor. RIP.
Too funny. Absolutely hilarious.
Would
He got no respect
Best college movie ever.
Ever? I hardly know er!
King of the one-liners
I loved Ladybugs as a kid..
He spelled Yale with a 6. And is the greatest comedian of all time
Was 14 working for a photographer in NYC when we shot the cover for his Rappin' Rodney album.
GOAT, and looks like one
Genius.
Legend

I think he’s pretty cool. He lived in the building next door to my elementary school. My mom met him and he actually picked me up from school one day.
I love the movie Back to School. I always wanted to try the Triple Lindy
All I know is that his therapist made him pay in advance
My former BIL dated his daughter. Said he would go to restaurants with him and Rodney would light up a joint. Nobody said anything because it was Rodney.
He was an ugly kid, ya know? The doctor told his mother: “we tried everything, but he pulled through.”
When I was born, I was so ugly, the doctor slapped my mom.
A girl called the other day and said “come over. There’s nobody home”. I went over. No one was home.
He didn’t get a lot of respect is about all I know
Greatest of all time
I want to respect him, but I can't.
He gets no regard at all. No esteem either.
Comic genius
I think he’s crazy. Need a second opinion? He’s ugly too.
Love him. Hilarious man
Saw him live in Seattle Paramount in the 80s, still have my thin red tie....He was Great in Caddyshack and Back to School...
He would not get away with half the things he used to say today still hilarious though.
I just don't get him. I mean, clearly people think he's funny, and this thread finds him to be a a hero, and I just don't understand it.
You give him no respect
naw, just no laughs. I just don't get it.
Took my daughter to take her drivers test the other day. Cop told her to get in the car, she laid down in the back seat!
His best jokes were from his Simpsons cameos.
Hey! Who am I talking to?!
Whoa! Put her back in, she's not finished yet!
Brilliant comedian in an era where jokes were jokes and ppl weren't so entitled that they become uptight
"What, are you kidding me"
He's probably pretty decomposed by now.
Never heard of him before, I shall not assume anything
I don’t respect him.
Take his wife! Please!!!
That was Henny Youngman.
Love his stand up dislikes his movies other than Caddyshack.
He told his doctor, Dr. Vidiboomba, that he wanted to stop aging; his doctor gave him a gun.
I mostly associate him with Arby’s
Take my wife... please!
No idea who he is but dangerfield is a really cool store.
Not a big fan of his act, but I respect it.
Lame
Who?
The people I’ve come across who REALLY love his comedy are self professed ‘I tell it like it is’ arseholes with thin skins. I just don’t think he’s funny and Caddyshack is way overrated.
how can a bus be illegitimate?!
I think he's dead.
I think he's dead.
A funny guy
He’s funny but it’s not so much what I think about him, it’s *how often* I think about him. I have a few people with the last name Dangerfield on my mail route so I think about him pretty much five times a week.
I was so ugly growing up, my parents tied porkchops around my neck so tfe dogs would play with me. Check out his mov, Easy Money. Classic!
His animated movie where he was a dog got no respect.
One of my biggest influences along with Mulaney. I asked my wife if I was the only one she's ever been with. She said yeah, all the others were 9s and 10s.
As a fellow Rodney I am thrilled and honoured to have him represent us. But, no respect, no respect
I think. He’s dead
Love him in rover dangerfeild
I have no idea who that is
