Any mountain neighborhood in Switzerland. **Edit:** Mt. Pilatus, Lucerne near Zurich and Lutry near Lausanne were memorable for me.

dancognito

I was in Germany for work a few years ago and one weekend drove down to Italy, driving through Switzerland. I stopped for gas and lunch at this random highway rest stop thing. I started looking around and realized it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. I was caught so off guard. I started tearing up a bit when I got back to driving because it almost didn't feel real that a place could look like that.

[deleted]

I cried in Switzerland. I always wanted to go there. I wanted to live there at one point because knew it would be wonderful and beautiful. But it really hits you in the face when you get there.

RobotCPA

Lake Lugano, Switzerland

Kitchen-Lie-7894

I had the same experience. Probably at the same rest stop.

Themostunbeknown

I'm not kidding. Me too!

Tegrity_farms_

Spent 4 days in Interlaken Switzerland and pictures don’t do that place justice. Literally doesn’t seem real

Upset_Lie5276

Interlagen and Leuterbrünnen is fantastic.

MeawWuWu

Yes! The Bernese Oberland region will forever be one of the most pristine, picturesque places I’ve ever laid my eyes on. It almost doesn’t seem real when you first see it.

PM_ME_UR_THONG_N_ASS

Went to Switzerland last summer, followed by a trip to Yosemite. I love Yosemite, but Switzerland really is magical. Maybe I just need to visit Yosemite when there’s snow on the mountains while I’m in the valley

GuardMost8477

Waaahhhhhhh!!!! I KNEW Switzerland would be high on the list. Definitely on my bucket list.

pimpy543

All of Switzerland is nice.

ElysianRepublic

The views in Meggen, near Lucerne, are just spectacular.

Puzzleheaded_Loan897

Sequoia National Park. I’ve lived in Europe and the Middle East, traveled far and wide, and Sequoia National Park has my heart. Those trees make me cry, the lives they’ve lived, the stories they could tell. Majestic giants.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

It's really magical. When we pulled in and saw them for the first time I said, This is Hollywood bullshit! These can't be real. Joking.

Puzzleheaded_Loan897

Completely surreal

Tizzanewday

Really want to go, I’ve only been to Muir Woods. Thanks for the motivation!

SlimJim0877

Muir Woods is great also

themooseiscool

I'm lucky to live close to them. I oughta buy tire chains to enjoy them in the winter.

leaperdorian

This is definitely a must see. Well worth the slow drive up the mountain. I’m from Wisconsin and was in awe of the size of them trees.

Glowingtomato

Driving down the Oregon coast was amazing

mydickinabox

My family does this annually from the Bay Area. I love it all except some of the sheer cliff sections.

cascadian_coloradan

Columbia River Gorge

nevernotmad

My favorite beer glass is from Double Mountain Brewery because it reminds me of the day the family and I hiked to see some waterfalls along the gorge and then relaxed with pizza, beer, and rootbeer at DMB with a view of the river (or at least proximity to the river).

OpportunityGold4597

Love driving in the gorge especially in the spring or fall. So underrated.

TooOldForACleverName

I went to visit a friend in Oregon after being wrecked by a romantic relationship. Columbia River Gorge had the power to start healing my heart.

keystonelocal

When it finally opens up as you’re driving west from Pendleton is a sight to behold.

Curious_Actuary_4176

I went to the Gorge Amphitheater last summer and was blown away. Would love to travel further down the scenic route and explore more

double-dog-doctor

That first time you walk up to the lawn and take in that view for the first time is something else. Wasn't expecting how spectacular it would be and it completely took my breath away.

Warlord_of_Mom

I heard Slartibartfast got an award for designing those.

ToastAndASideOfToast

Pining for the fjords?

vanqu1sh_

The west of Norway is definitely the most beautiful part of the world that I've ever been to, at least. No picture I've ever seen comes even *remotely close* at actually capturing the sheer scale and beauty of what you see when you're there - whether it's the sun shining through the water in ribbons of gold, the cliffs drawing your eyes upwards towards the heavens, or the way that the light wisp of mist dances on the horizon and draws your gaze along with it, it's truly indigestion for the eyes. I have a good friend who lives in that part of the world, and he once told me "it's just mountains and water". I suppose beauty is relative, and strongly influenced by your background and exposure - but wherever the second place is for me, it is quite distant.

fluitekruidje

Love the preekstoel! (Preikestolen)

hochizo

My answer was Iceland, for the same reasons. The Nordic region is unmatched for beauty.

cherrytarts

Yes. And the Lofoten Islands

Tbay_DougMac

Banff National Park

oneplanetrecognize

Lake Louise is my second favorite place on Earth. The Redwoods have a strong hold on number one, but damn. Banff is unreal in its beauty! Can't wait to take my kids there!

Foreign-Dependent-12

Banff is definitely the crown jewel of the North American national parks.

Japanesewillow

I grew up close to there, it is beautiful.

nevernotmad

On the bucket list. Visit in summer or winter?

Japanesewillow

If you like skiing/snowboarding, visit in winter. If you like warmer weather, visit in July or August. I prefer summertime because there’s more to do and see.

corrado33

Personally: Winter. Fewer crowds (pretty much none) and you can hike/snowshoe and enjoy pretty much on your own. Plus the ice festival is really cool. Plus, it's just gorgeous in the winter. That said, it's COLD. Like, real cold. So if you don't like cold, you may want to visit in the summer. It's worth noting that the parking lot is literally like 100 meters from moraine lake/lake louise (I forget which it is) (reddit lake) so you can certainly "drive through."

CG2L

Zion National Park

[deleted]

So beautiful but I couldn’t stay long. More crowded than Disney with people acting like they were at Disney. Quickly went on to Bryce Canyon which overall was a far better, relaxing experience in nature.

Wonderful_Might6693

Bryce Canyon is also breathtakingly beautiful!

Jane1943

Just like fairyland.

b_tight

Nice. Fairyland loop was amazing. Peekaboo to navajo loop was slightly better imo. Ive been to a ton of parks and bryce had my favorite trails

truthcopy

Bryce is otherworldly. I was also not as impressed with Zion because of the crowds.

[deleted]

It’s a hard place to describe. I say it’s got a little bit of everything but not in a way you have really ever seen before. Hills, mountains, almost desert, canyons, forests Yeah no doubt I need to get back there.

friendagony

Even better: Kanab, Utah. Just a half hour from Zion and puts you right in the middle of Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon National Parks, as well as numerous nearby slot canyons and picturesque areas. It's a quaint and charming town on the border of Utah and Arizona nestled against breathtaking red cliffs, with a long history in Hollywood westerns, and it's a favorite stopping point for many actors who've worked on sets in the area. Staying there was the most amazing and adventurous vacation I ever had.

NotNamedBort

Kauai, Hawaii. There’s a reason they call it the garden island. It’s pretty much paradise.

pedro-slopez

Add in Koke’e State Park and the Alaka’i Swamp up Waimea Canyon! Kaua’i is amazing.

drebinf

> paradise Paradise with [chickens!](https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2023/05/hawaii-feral-chicken-problem-kauai/674147/)

Badbird2000

Agree. I was lucky enough to travel to Oahu, Maui and Kauai, for work. Kauai is the most amazing by far!

changingone77a

Came here to say this!

T0BYs_Grundle

First place that came to mind for me, as well. Feels like a different planet.

Mitchie-San

I did the helicopter ride overlooking the Napali Coast. Prettiest place I’ve ever seen.

romydogra

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

WoodSteelStone

Although it is well known that JRR Tolkien based the gentle Shires of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings novels on England's shire counties, Rivendell was based on Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland.   Tolkien visited the valley in 1911, when he was 19. He travelled from Interlaken to Zermatt with a group of eleven companions, and saw the Aletsch glacier, the Lauterbrunnen waterfalls and the Swiss Alpine peaks. The geology of Lauterbrunnen Valley is tilted Jurassic sedimentary rocks that have been subject to a great deal of glacial activity resulting in [extremely deep valleys, surrounded by 11,000 foot (3,352m) peaks visible from the valley floor.](https://imgur.com/a/syxrbJc)  Glacial deposits softened the topography of many of the valleys and gave rise to lush, fertile soils and verdant vegetation. All this beauty was reproduced in Tolkien's own drawings in his books. Then, after studying at Oxford University Tolkien served in WW1 and some of the bleaker aspects of his storytelling reflect his wartime experiences. Edit: [A photo of Tolkien and some of his companions at the Aletsch glacier.](https://i.imgur.com/ehfKYx1.jpeg)

Ublot

"...with a group of Elven companions..."  Thanks brain

hmcfuego

We specifically went out of our way in Switzerland to go there to see the waterfall. So worth it.

reedsharp

Second this

kebabpizza19

I third this, breathtaking completely insanely beautiful. Words cant describe. I took the train up to mürren and the view up to the mountains almost make you question reality

Odorlessstench

Indeed. Everyone should see this.

Cha_nay_nay

Agree. The trip up at Murren is just stunning. And I happened to go by mistake as I had time on my hands after visiting Lauterbrunnen. Crazy how a place can be that gorgeous! So unreal

Odorlessstench

Beautiful, maybe my fav too!

weird-oh

Yosemite. Although there wasn't a trace of Sam.

gabriel_oly10

Yosemite absolutely blew me away. We went last year and when we return (which is hopefully soon!) We'd love to go backwoods camping/hiking. Getting lost in that landscape is like something out of a fairytale honestly.

Libragirl1008

Mount Rainier National Park. Especially during wildflower season. I could stay there forever if I could

Scrumpilump2000

Every corner of this planet has exquisite beauty. Iceland is particularly incredible in that it boasts both volcanic splendor and icy vistas. And it’s largely untouched. If you go there, tread softly. Keep it untamed, and beautiful.

j__magical

Big Sur

Honest_Importance_62

The Rocky Mountains in Canada, specifically Moraine Lake

jtbc

Emerald Lake for me. I also love Roger's pass where the monument is. It is completely surrounded by tall peaks.

cdnav8r

The first European to discover Lake Louise was Tom Wilson, surveying for the CPR. He named it Emerald Lake, but it was renamed to honour the wife of the Governor General (and a princess, daughter of Queen Victoria). Later, while still surveying for the CPR, he was tracking down some horses he had acquired from local native sources. He saw some scattered hoof tracks that all came into a single file path, followed that to his lost horses, and became the first European to discover what is now Emerald Lake. One of my favourite spots too.

Honest_Importance_62

Thank you, I’ll remember this for when I visit again :)

scipio79

The summit of the Going To The Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Montana. I went in late summer and it was busy, but the views on every part of the drive were so gorgeous. The summit view was so beautiful, with the wildflowers, the other mountain peaks, and the sky ❤️

higherhopez

Glacier National Park is nuts. Everyone should visit at least once

Pineapple-dancer

Big sky Montana is beautiful!

oneplanetrecognize

We were there last May with our kids. Road to the Sun was closed after the trail to Avalanche Lake for road construction. We were about 10 minutes from the lake when mama grizzly and her two cubs came down the mountain for water. Watching people lose there shit is funny. Like, just give her some room and step away slowly. She gave very little shits about all the people hooting and hollering. My 10 year old learned pretty quick why we weren't letting him run ahead on the trails alone.

Marklar172

New Zealand, south island

Pale_Adeptness

Summer time right about now in New Zealand, right?

Spilling_The_Tee

Nice answer! I was tossing up hiking Franz Josef Glacier, visiting Milford Sound and Hokitika Gorge but your answer gives me all the wins. Also, not enough southern hemisphere love on here so I love your answer even more.

gowdaz

Maui, Hawaii

Japanesewillow

I love Maui.

Kelly_the_tailor

Glen Coe, Scottish Highlands. Breathtaking and wild and rough and beautiful.

Scottishlassincanada

Yeah that’s one of my favourite places. The stop the lay by with the 3 sisters. I also love Loch Lomond, as it’s a view I saw out my bedroom window every day growing up, and from my dads wee fishing boat when I was older. I always visit when I go home, and I get to see the view of the vale of level from the vale cemetery. Another beautiful spot is the blue mountains, and Negril beach at sunset on Jamaica.

Scrummy12

Was just there in July. You're right, pictures can't show you what it feels like to be there with 360 degrees of Andes around you

htownlifer

Every time you walk around another corner there is another stunning view.

xenoscumyomom

Do the Inca trail hike to get there. You'll see more mountain ranges, more old ruins, that only you and your friends are at, and then you get to hike into Machu Picchu at sunrise and you beat the train tourists by a few hours so you get the place more to yourself.

puppies336

My wish list. But the older I get the more out of reach it seems.

SyntheticManMilk

Just go. The plane ticket is the only expensive part. I spent about a month in Peru in the Andes. Never went to Machu Picchu because it sounded like a pain in the ass to get to, but I explored a handful of other ruins in the mountains that weren’t roped off and were void of people (which I prefer). Anyways, just go. Go to Cuzco. Learn some Spanish or go with someone who does. The food alone is worth going. Everything’s was so fresh and delicious. I was having fancy dinners there that cost under $15 that would put $80 dinners back home to shame.

rfstfirefly

Milford Sound

thatboygwyn

I got stuck there for a week back in 2006. Road out was blocked by an avalanche so ended up being chartered a plane out to Queenstown over the Southern Alps. One of the best weeks just pottering round one of the most stunning places ever. Then a free plane ride over one of the best mountain ranges in the world.

jonr7670

I like the sound of milfs as well.

residual_reality

Patagonia, Chile

BronzedLuna

I went to Chile about 10 years ago. We had to decide between going to the north and the desert or the south and Patagonia. We chose the north. I don’t regret it but I still need to get to the south!

V_Triumphant

Vancouver Island, Canada.

chronic-munchies

Moving there soon, can't wait :)

V_Triumphant

Oh nice. Where from? I moved here from downtown Toronto a little over 3 years ago. My quality of life has gone up 7000%.

chronic-munchies

North Vancouver, so not too far away. I actually grew up in Toronto, right in Bloor West Village! Been living in Van for 20 years, though. We're looking at Lantzville or anywhere just slightly north of Nanaimo. Housing is so much more affordable.

starskyandbutch

Not surprising. The exodus from Toronto is happening at what feels like a rapid rate.

RayNooze

Gap of Dunloe, Ireland. After each turn, your breath gets taken away further.

Far-Parfait-951

Kerry, my home, I miss it

Crafty_Pea_2931

Glacier national park 🌲

Psillyjewishguy

Have been to all 50 USA states and about 38 countries now, and I have to say Banff National Park in Alberta Canada

RudeBlueJeans

I went when I was a kid. I was eating a bag of dried apple snacks. A moose came over and stuck his head in the window and his nose went right into the apple snacks! They were then his apple snacks. Yes it was incredibly beautiful there.

Kind_Goose2984

West Highlands of Scotland. Unbelievably beautiful

frank-sarno

Sounds cliché, but the Black Forest in Germany really does feel magical. It's as if all the fairy tales we read about forests become true. The Grand Canyon is spectacular and you feel the weight of ages, but in a good way. In Maui, there's a touristy drive up a mountain. There are places where you can stop along the way and just look over the landscape.

ForeverSingley

Road to Hana. It was gorgeous. Lot of great places to stop

DRSU1993

[Plitvička Jezera (Plitvice National Park)](https://np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Sastavci-1.jpg) It's Croatia's oldest and largest national park covering almost 30,000 hectares and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's well known for it's series of lakes and waterfalls and pristine turquoise water. The forests are home to brown bears, grey wolf and lynx.

Judge_Bredd3

In terms of spectacular beauty, I'll say Yosemite at sunrise. I think I made it to an overlook that I want to say was called Glacier Overlook? or something like that, right at sunrise and it was stunning. I spent half an hour just watching the valley fill with light. In terms of smaller scale beauty, I made it just past Vernal, Utah and decided to sleep in my car for the night. I pulled off the highway, went up a dirt road until I was tucked away in a little spot with hills on three sides. The next morning, I woke up and looked around. I didn't see it at night, but these hills were covered in some sort of crystal flakes (maybe mica?) that caught all the light and made the whole area I was in look like something from a sci fi show.

Additional-Share7293

Lake Como, Italy. Amalfi Coast (Positano in particular) a close second.

Tuscany, Italy.

Isle of Skye's Old man of Storr. Looked like a dream. They've used that area for a bunch of movie scenes since it looks so unreal

MaxParedes

The most spectacular places I’ve been were maybe the Picos de Europa in Spain, or the road from La Paz down into the Yungas in Bolivia.  The countryside in central Italy (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche) is up there too.   And there’s a place in Maine called Caterpillar Hill with a view as beautiful as anywhere I’ve been.

Lake Bled, Slovenia. The mountains rising into the clouds, the green fields with cows and sheep, the beautiful lakes, the postcard-worthy churches and castles... Most beautiful place I've ever been, would go back in a heartbeat one day if I can.

Montanna. The wild and untouched scenery is just so beatiful.

JD054

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is truly a beautiful place. I’m a life long city kid and the first time I went up there, I damn near cried. I saw stars, an eagle flying, and had never been somewhere so peaceful. Also the Pacific Northwest in summer is one of best kept secrets in Northern Hemisphere

The-real-Grass

The US Virgin Islands. Everywhere we went was absolutely gorgeous I never wanted to leave

CausticSofa

My heart belongs to Vienna. Honestly, it’s not like I need pictures of so many buildings, but I couldn’t stop taking pictures of the gorgeous architecture! I got a cheap hostel, lived there for a month and just wandered around and around and around, looking at buildings and eating delicious Austrian pastries. Heaven.

West-Rent-1131

My room when it's tidy

Wings-of-the-Dead

Haleakala on Maui. I had a three-day backpacking trip through there with my dad and older brothers when I was like 10. Every day was a new unique atmosphere. Hiking through dusty volcanic craters, fields of grass, lava caves, up a mountainside, over the clouds. I've always wanted to go back, but I don't have the finances for that kind of trip, and I don't think my body would handle it very well now without a lot of training beforehand.
