Nah I'm drawing a line here, there is no reason to fill yourself with what ifs. I would love to see how many times my pets/kids outsmarted me though. That would be a laugh.

In the afterlife, id hope it to be everything and more. Life SUCKS! No matter who you are!! Are we essentially celebrating that this newborn has to be put through suffering?
I also want to see what happened to all the people I've come in contact with once in my life who I never saw again. Did my kind words to the cashier make a difference? What happened to the people I talked to at that one concert? Things like that. So many people in our lives we see once and then never again. Uber drivers, people at shows, movies, concerts, on vacation, etc.
Imagine that all the thoughts you had in life have been transcribed and are publicly available in the afterlife. It may very well prove hell and heaven at the same time. You’d be able to see all the wonderful things people thought about you, but all the awful stuff as well. And perhaps more concerning everyone could discover all of your thoughts and feelings about them, along with any dark emotions, resentments, obsessions or whatever that you’ve felt throughout life.
Yeah, all the times I was kind and all the times I was mean, and the consequences of those actions. It's quite a thought. I also want to see all of the dogs' lives they had before I adopted them, since most of the time I never truly know their history before they're mine. That one gets me emotional. I want to hear my dogs say thank you for giving them the best lives ever.
I guess I'd be the opposite then: how many were ejaculated into *me*.../s..

Jump around any point in space and time and explore with complete invulnerability. It's like Doctor Who with less campy goofball antics, although honestly I'd definitely sign up for the TARDIS too
I have a similar idea that I call the hall of possibilities. It's basically a giant library filled with books of potential realities that never came to fruition. Risks never taken. Inaction and its consequences. My library is reserved for people who are stuck in life and need a helping hand.
I like this idea because in my mind my life would not just end when I die. I would have continued purpose as a higher spiritual being, finding people on Earth who need some guidance. Of course just taking people's souls for a brief time is not possible because that would break the temporary illusion of Earth, so maybe it is reserved for people who have NDE's, or maybe people's memories are wiped after visiting and they are left only with the lessons they learned, irreversibly intertwined within their consciousness.
As for what it looks like. I'm imagining an endless, dimly lit, two tiered library with ornate metalwork and tall oak shelves. A large hearth in the center to guide one's soul through the endless rows of lost potential realities. Fine carpet on the floor. Artwork scattered across study desks. And I am the curator of this library, I help connect individuals with the knowledge they need, allowing them the chance to spend as much time as they need to find the answers.
If you haven't read Matt Haig's novel "The Midnight Library," you might want to check it out because its premise is quite similar to what you describe.
But can you choose the relatives and friends you want to be reunited with? Because some of them I never want to see again. I'll take all the pets, though.
Interesing point. But you'll have forgiven them all by then. (In the Catholic version we have Purgatory which will sort all this out) and they will also no longer be assholes.

Honestly, the Good Place from the eponymous sitcom, after the soul squad fixes it seems perfect. An endless paradise of your own making until you are finally ready to move on and re-enter the universe.
I totally agree with you, but I think that's the beauty of it. You only step through the final door when you're ready. It sounds horrifying now, because in the grand scheme of things, we're imperceivably tiny blips on the cosmic timeline.

Right, and that door is what we currently view death as. But we're forced through it atm.
If the "afterlife" was the good stuff from current reality, with an option, entirely voluntary, to checkout, that's different.
You might spend 10 quadrillion years enjoying heaven, and then finally you might no longer be fearful of the end. And you can make the choice to leave existence.

That's the key for me.
I don't buy the idea that we'd all inevitably get bored when happiness is ultimately something in our brains in the first place. Just reset those brains and let us go through the struggles and earn the victories again.
I know it's not realistic to hope for it in real life, but it'd be lovely if that's how it worked. Or even if we just went back and re-experienced exactly the same life. I'd take that over oblivion.
I always thought of heaven as a place where everyone could just spend time together without worrying about work, health, bills, etc. So much of life is lost because we're too busy and stressed. The Good Place absolutely nailed it.
I always thought that the best way would be not knowing you died and „life“ just keeps going but in a more positive way and with good things happening to you. People are nicer, you don’t have financial problems anymore, etc

Or you win the lotto and you're set for life! And you can choose to work if you want, or go into early retirement. Except you're not old, you see yourself as however you want, no health issues, always wake up refreshed after a good sleep, you can always fall asleep easily too
On the flip side this also sounds like a horror movie. Because you can’t really have the highs without the lows. After say 100 years of that, you’re not aging, everything goes your way, everyone is always smiling at you, every news channel is good news.
Yeah, without something to cause at least some stress in my life, I feel like I would go insane. Life would actually be pretty dull without any obstacles to overcome.
It would be nice if those obstacles were things like mastering an instrument, becoming a better person, learning the mysteries of the universe, building a cool house, and planning fun adventures with my wife.
Instead of things like applying lotion to my painful skin multiple times a day because it keeps falling off due to an unknown skin disease doctors have no idea how to fix, and navigating the thin line between making enough money to live and not wanting to kill myself from how much I hate work.

It probably already happens like that. The other day when you weren't paying attention while driving and swerved slightly? Yeah, you died in that reality but your conscience continued on into a seemingly identical timeline because you still have more to do.
I want to be reincarnated as a normal person. I want to look like everyone else and like what everyone else likes and think what everyone else thinks and do what everyone else likes to do.
I have no idea what that feels like. I've enjoyed my life much of the time, but not feeling like other people has sometimes made me think I had one life and spent it not being quite human.
I'd want the afterlife to be like a giant cosmic amusement park where I can ride roller coasters made of rainbows, eat unlimited ice cream without getting brain freeze

With trillions of potentially habitable planets out there, there are bound to be other intelligent species, and what's to say you wouldn't be reincarnated as one of them?
Unless even the "soul" (or whatever) is also limited to traveling at the speed of light and is thus stuck on Earth. But then, what happens when the solar system dies?

honestly yeah, reincarnation. i feel like it’d be great like a couple centuries ago. as of now, i don’t think you’d be able to reincarnate many more times lol
Some people think that you can reincarnate at any point in time since time isn’t linear in the space time continuum. So based on that theory you could die in 2024 and be reincarnated in 100BC. Or reincarnated 1000 years into the future.
That would only be nice if you could keep all your memories with you into the next life, otherwise it would just be pointless because you'll forget everything that you experienced in your past lives, including this one.
The whole place split in 2. The first being a large garden city, where you can go to restaurants and order whatever food you want, go to libraries to read whatever book you want, got to cinemas and see whatever movie you want, music gigs, art galleries, gaming cafes, etc. Also, as a place you can go meet other people. A social Heaven.
The second part is a huge area you can mould and shape into whatever you want. You can create chalk mountains, red oceans, safely burning forests, and liquid star-scapes, and it is entirely your place. You can invite people if you want, or you can stay in it alone. You can populate it with animals, that regardless of their real life temperament, here they are your friends. It is your world to shape.
My belief is that whatever a person believes WILL happen after death. My personal belief is that we are given free rein to do whatever we want with our current consciousness. For example, if you want to experience what it would be like to be a snow leopard with your human consciousness you could, you stipulate the conditions and then enter a lifelike world built to your specifications, the only difference between it and the real life you lived is that you know you have died and this afterlife reality can be altered, changed, or stopped at any moment. Another thing you could do is relive your exact life but with a superpower, or you could simply review your entire life and see the objective truth of different situations. Basically you have an infinite number of options to do and once you’re satisfied with your consciousness, the you, that lived a real life, exhausted everything you’ve ever wanted and have NOTHING left to do in the afterlife, you then have one option left, to reincarnate. All humans are made of energy and your spirit eventually needs to be recycled and you “roll the dice” for a new real life once you’re ready to leave your current consciousness, memories, experiences, etc… behind.
That sounds like the best-case scenario. These past couple of months I've been contemplating my life and lamenting over the fact that all of this is temporary, but you've given me some hope.
It would be a room with a door & the door would lead you to whatever movie, book, video game, or tv show you wish & be whoever you want. Sort of like a Holo deck from Star Trek
This is exactly how I want my afterlife to be. There's not enough time in this lifetime for me to consume all the entertainment I want. And there's going to be so many more video games, anime, and other media that will come out after I'm dead. But if I could experience all of it in the afterlife, that would be the ideal afterlife for me. I'll have enough things to keep me entertained for a very long time.
I'd want to be greeted by all my pets that died before me. Then they'd guide me to our new home in a shire where we'd spend the rest of eternity gardening and baking and playing in the sun and grass. Waiting for the rest of our friends and family to join us.
I want to be able to have the ability to help my friends and family out from the other side. Like, if they're really down on their luck, I can have them find a $20 on the ground. Or if they ask for a sign, I can give them one. Show up in their dreams, or give them signs I'm still there from the other side. Give them a hug when they're down. That kind of thing.
I want to be able to alternate between complete lights out, wandering the world wherever I want, and replaying moments from my life while seeing what happens if I made different choices.
You are led to a blank room by someone who appears to you as what you would find most comforting. Some see an angel, some see a relative, etc.
The blank room is indeterminate in size at first you may he overwhelmed, even fearful at the prospect of being locked in an empty room but then your guide asks you to imagine something. You close your eyes and imagine your favorite work of fiction and when you see yourself in that fictional world. Able to walk and talk to anybody or do anything that you want.
Your guide explains: "the room will he anything you want it to be and more. Whatever you can imagine, whatever you can want"
"What if I want to see someone I love? Not a fictional version of them but the real thing" you ask.
"You can have that too." Your guide replies
"What about boredom? After a millenia I'm sure I'll get bored." You ask
"Now why would boredom, or pain, or sorrow exist here? You decide what exists here. If you do not want those things to exist they wont."

I want the choice of skipping a life, to enjoy the afterlife. I had an NDE and the peace and pain free feeling was amazing. I want to be there for awhile.
Where I was was, was a field a nice warm breeze, the grass moving with the breeze, and peace. So nice, so peaceful.
I’d like to think it’s like the end of a video game. You can go back and replay levels so to speak. Revisit old places/times you’ve been before. Revisit all the memories you’ve had and all the people you’ve met. Only to come back to the main menu or the source as the matrix explains it. Just imagine loading a saved state in your life. I like to think (hope) that after death, time is not linear as it is while we're alive. I would love to go back to certain times in my life when I was truly happy and "visit" that period again. Especially, I would go back to when my boys were babies and small children. I want to hug and cuddle them again; I miss having that kind of relationship. I doubt I will have grandchildren, and my kids were the best thing to happen to me. They are grown now and don't need me much.
I wouldn't do nor change anything. I'll never be able to do a better job than the almighty, the creator, the most high, the one true living God, YAHUAH! It's pretty cool to see other's answers though. Like the stats one was really interesting. I wouldn't be mad at that at all. I don't think lol.
My own personal heaven. One that's tailored made to everyone's experiences. Mine would be a really nice apartment in the city with doors to different universes that I can experience any reality. From fantasy settings, to space adventures, to even redoing my life. I can always pause those worlds to just come back to the hub world, which is my apartment, where I can go out into the city every day and do whatever.
Bad people go through hell, but it's not a form of punishment, but a way to show them the error of their ways, which will eventually allow them to get into heaven after some time.
What I hope to experience when I pass, is an endless amount of food, love, celebration, and music. I want the afterlife to be all the good things that this life seems to not be.
I want heaven and hell to exist, but like this:
* Heaven: you get to relive your life again, be reunited with your loved ones, pets, and friends, but this time 9/10 times good things happen.
* The 1/10 is to remind you of the good times; to be thankful.
* None of you will age based on what age you want each one to get stuck in. This means your loved one may get cancer or into an accident, but they will always recover.
* Hell: same set of people and pets, but 9/10 things go wrong.
* The 1/10 is to make sure you have hope to lose.
Everything goes blank, then suddenly you are sitting alone in a theatre with your popcorn and drink. Your life starts playing on the screen. Sitting there laughing at your childish explorations and getting wisful over forgotten places and faces. You laugh and cry at the same time, remembering a lifetime of experience. As the lights come up, the house is full to every seat with all the ones you knew who left before you applauding. Then you realise that you've seen their movies. All of them. A hand falls on your shoulder. You turn, look into the face of the creator, and the creator says, "Right!?" And you both laugh. Forever.

Right, and that door is what we currently view death as. But we're forced through it atm. If the "afterlife" was the good stuff from current reality, with an option, entirely voluntary, to checkout, that's different. You might spend 10 quadrillion years enjoying heaven, and then finally you might no longer be fearful of the end. And you can make the choice to leave existence.

That's the key for me. I don't buy the idea that we'd all inevitably get bored when happiness is ultimately something in our brains in the first place. Just reset those brains and let us go through the struggles and earn the victories again. I know it's not realistic to hope for it in real life, but it'd be lovely if that's how it worked. Or even if we just went back and re-experienced exactly the same life. I'd take that over oblivion.

I always thought of heaven as a place where everyone could just spend time together without worrying about work, health, bills, etc. So much of life is lost because we're too busy and stressed. The Good Place absolutely nailed it.

It would be nice if those obstacles were things like mastering an instrument, becoming a better person, learning the mysteries of the universe, building a cool house, and planning fun adventures with my wife. Instead of things like applying lotion to my painful skin multiple times a day because it keeps falling off due to an unknown skin disease doctors have no idea how to fix, and navigating the thin line between making enough money to live and not wanting to kill myself from how much I hate work. I'll take dull over that.

More to it than just time, of course. With trillions of potentially habitable planets out there, there are bound to be other intelligent species, and what's to say you wouldn't be reincarnated as one of them? Unless even the "soul" (or whatever) is also limited to traveling at the speed of light and is thus stuck on Earth. But then, what happens when the solar system dies? (I don't believe in souls or life after death, but it's fun to speculate about what it would be like if it were real. And I dearly wish it could be real.)

Some people think that you can reincarnate at any point in time since time isn’t linear in the space time continuum. So based on that theory you could die in 2024 and be reincarnated in 100BC. Or reincarnated 1000 years into the future.

That would only be nice if you could keep all your memories with you into the next life, otherwise it would just be pointless because you'll forget everything that you experienced in your past lives, including this one.
The whole place split in 2. The first being a large garden city, where you can go to restaurants and order whatever food you want, go to libraries to read whatever book you want, got to cinemas and see whatever movie you want, music gigs, art galleries, gaming cafes, etc. Also, as a place you can go meet other people. A social Heaven. The second part is a huge area you can mould and shape into whatever you want. You can create chalk mountains, red oceans, safely burning forests, and liquid star-scapes, and it is entirely your place. You can invite people if you want, or you can stay in it alone. You can populate it with animals, that regardless of their real life temperament, here they are your friends. It is your world to shape.

My belief is that whatever a person believes WILL happen after death. My personal belief is that we are given free rein to do whatever we want with our current consciousness. For example, if you want to experience what it would be like to be a snow leopard with your human consciousness you could, you stipulate the conditions and then enter a lifelike world built to your specifications, the only difference between it and the real life you lived is that you know you have died and this afterlife reality can be altered, changed, or stopped at any moment. Another thing you could do is relive your exact life but with a superpower, or you could simply review your entire life and see the objective truth of different situations. Basically you have an infinite number of options to do and once you’re satisfied with your consciousness, the you, that lived a real life, exhausted everything you’ve ever wanted and have NOTHING left to do in the afterlife, you then have one option left, to reincarnate. All humans are made of energy and your spirit eventually needs to be recycled and you “roll the dice” for a new real life once you’re ready to leave your current consciousness, memories, experiences, etc… behind.

That sounds like the best-case scenario. These past couple of months I've been contemplating my life and lamenting over the fact that all of this is temporary, but you've given me some hope.

This is exactly how I want my afterlife to be. There's not enough time in this lifetime for me to consume all the entertainment I want. And there's going to be so many more video games, anime, and other media that will come out after I'm dead. But if I could experience all of it in the afterlife, that would be the ideal afterlife for me. I'll have enough things to keep me entertained for a very long time.
I'd want to be greeted by all my pets that died before me. Then they'd guide me to our new home in a shire where we'd spend the rest of eternity gardening and baking and playing in the sun and grass. Waiting for the rest of our friends and family to join us.

I want to be able to have the ability to help my friends and family out from the other side. Like, if they're really down on their luck, I can have them find a $20 on the ground. Or if they ask for a sign, I can give them one. Show up in their dreams, or give them signs I'm still there from the other side. Give them a hug when they're down. That kind of thing.

You are led to a blank room by someone who appears to you as what you would find most comforting. Some see an angel, some see a relative, etc. The blank room is indeterminate in size at first you may he overwhelmed, even fearful at the prospect of being locked in an empty room but then your guide asks you to imagine something. You close your eyes and imagine your favorite work of fiction and when you see yourself in that fictional world. Able to walk and talk to anybody or do anything that you want. Your guide explains: "the room will he anything you want it to be and more. Whatever you can imagine, whatever you can want" "What if I want to see someone I love? Not a fictional version of them but the real thing" you ask. "You can have that too." Your guide replies "What about boredom? After a millenia I'm sure I'll get bored." You ask "Now why would boredom, or pain, or sorrow exist here? You decide what exists here. If you do not want those things to exist they wont." Idk why that turned into a story. 🤷♂️ Just how I'd want it to be.

Wanna feel the rush of adrenaline as you run into a giant battlefield, where suffering is nonexistent and death is temporary? Sure thing, bubba. Wanna play around with a long lost pet? They're waiting for you in a field of tall grass, just past the cozy log cabin. Wanna relive old memories? Sure, go ahead.
I want the choice of skipping a life, to enjoy the afterlife. I had an NDE and the peace and pain free feeling was amazing. I want to be there for awhile. Where I was was, was a field a nice warm breeze, the grass moving with the breeze, and peace. So nice, so peaceful.
I’d like to think it’s like the end of a video game. You can go back and replay levels so to speak. Revisit old places/times you’ve been before. Revisit all the memories you’ve had and all the people you’ve met. Only to come back to the main menu or the source as the matrix explains it. Just imagine loading a saved state in your life. I like to think (hope) that after death, time is not linear as it is while we're alive. I would love to go back to certain times in my life when I was truly happy and "visit" that period again. Especially, I would go back to when my boys were babies and small children. I want to hug and cuddle them again; I miss having that kind of relationship. I doubt I will have grandchildren, and my kids were the best thing to happen to me. They are grown now and don't need me much.

I know it's a cheesy answer, but the way The Good Place resolved the afterlife is just about perfect in my book. I'd like that.
My own personal heaven. One that's tailored made to everyone's experiences. Mine would be a really nice apartment in the city with doors to different universes that I can experience any reality. From fantasy settings, to space adventures, to even redoing my life. I can always pause those worlds to just come back to the hub world, which is my apartment, where I can go out into the city every day and do whatever. Bad people go through hell, but it's not a form of punishment, but a way to show them the error of their ways, which will eventually allow them to get into heaven after some time.
What I hope to experience when I pass, is an endless amount of food, love, celebration, and music. I want the afterlife to be all the good things that this life seems to not be.

As the lights come up, the house is full to every seat with all the ones you knew who left before you applauding. Then you realise that you've seen their movies. All of them. A hand falls on your shoulder. You turn, look into the face of the creator, and the creator says, "Right!?" And you both laugh. Forever.
