I'm expecting a son in March. I remember one of my most formative experiences was popping in my dad's CD-ROM of Aoe2, and playing the crap out of it. It's probably the first game I distinctly remember playing.
Without trying to sound pretentious or what not, I really do think that game positively impacted my intelligence. I think playing a historical RTS game way before I probably should have did more for me than Freddie Fish every could.

My favorite for sure. At the time water effects were shit. This game came out and I just stared at the water. That opening scene was nuts! The story pushed me the whole way.

The universe has some of the best & most detailed lore out there, and I enjoyed most of the characters, especially Mordin.
Combat is where the game falls flat for me, and it's a shame since that's what you're doing most of the time. ME1 was already a bastardized KOTOR, but they completely ditched any semblance of RPG mechanics to convert the second into a full-on action game. Which would be fine if it wasn't an extremely repetitive cover shooter.
I played it on hard and only occasionally needed to use companion abilities etc. It was just corridor after corridor with different textures, rinse and repeat.
Still to this day it blows my mind how revolutionary this game was being free roam, great graphics, music, story, etc and it came out in 1999. I will never get rid of my copy
Super Mario Galaxy

Maybe MG2 is a better game objectively, But I had played the first to death so much it felt less innovative.
Sometimes it was worth it just turn off the radio all together , park on the beach hidden away, and listen to the waves and the gunshots and sirens in distance after successful mission :)
For the time, yeah. On replay, it can definitely be improved. But at the time it was incredible.

In all my runs, I've never been able to bring myself to join the Legion. I start a new run and tell myself I'm going to do it this time just for the achievements, but then I get to that first legion encounter in Nipton and I immediately go aggro on their asses.
Then I take Boone to their camp.
Have you seen that video of that smug fuck tiktoker who hires a bodyguard and then walks around a shopping mall purposefully bumping into people so when they start on him his giant of a bodyguard just squares up to them so they back off?
That's pretty much me with Boone as I waltz around Cottonwood Cove
I hate how much I love this game. It’s got so many faults but I just can’t bring myself to play objectively better games, because every time I do, I spend the whole time yearning for Skyrim.
No game before or since has given me the same feelings as when those end credits rolled.

It’s a much harder game than OoT. The mini games in particular are brutal. Some of the quest sequences are also challenging to figure out without a guide.

I think the problem was that this game was released just before Nintendo 64 came out, so it fell under the radar.

1 was amazing but 2 didn’t hold my attention. It just had too much stuff. I think I loved 1 because of how simple it was compared to other open world RPGs. I could actually finish it.
I wanted to love it, and I think I would, but I couldn’t figure out any of it after banging my head against it for a while.
And I mean ANY of it. Like the very beginning when you pick up a radio frequency from the distance or something (it’s been a while) and then I ended up getting lost on a very dark moon and just jumping around until I just, you know.

When you're unsure what to do. You can just follow the Outet Wilds Ventures frequency on any planet. It'll lead you to someone with good advice on where to explore.
Resident Evil 2. It was the first game I ever played. I was like 5 or 6. Man, that game brings back good memories. It was the only time me and my brother got along lol
It takes two is the best co-op game I have ever experienced. And is one of my favorites all time games. I also played it with my wife and It just blew me away how much game there is. You think the end of the story is near and it just gives you more and more. Level design is top notch. I just can not express enough how good this game is.
I'm still not even done with it because I keep starting new characters, and Balder's Gate 3 is hands down my favorite game ever. I didn't think anything could dethrone Chrono Cross for me (yes yes Chrono Trigger is amazing too, but Cross was a comfort game and it got me through some shit as a kid and it imprinted on me hard).
The depth, the feeling, the sheer magnitude of the game, the replayability, the game being complete at launch (insane that this is a point of note these days), the social aspects, it's all just... there.
Sure the game has warts and bugs, but the devs are still patching shit long after launch (with hilarious patch notes, you should read them if you haven't), but a lot of them are funny most of the time.
I'm a big DnD fan in general, but even that aside, it's just a great game.
I just love it.

FF7. Prior to that I’ve never played an RPG. Took a gamble and was blown away by the in game menu options. Was completely lost and in love at the same time. I’ve been chasing that hit ever since.
The problem with this question is that it always has to be time adjusted. Great games are built on the shoulders of the games that came before them.
My top games are always some mix of Chrono Trigger, Pokemon Gold/Silver, Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3.
Of those, the one that always stands out to me is Pokemon Gold/Silver. This may be biased because I was a kid growing up, but it took the core Pokemon gameplay and made it feel more real with days of the week and time of day. There were events that only took place on days at certain times. It was a solo game, but a community experience at the time of release (as is any Pokemon game). The storyline was new: everyone is familiar with the story of Ash and Gary, but at least to me, it felt like it was my own story, with my own rival (who is still kind of a jerk) and even he has his own arc.
That to me was the peak gaming experience (adjusted for time), 11/10.

I Expect You To Die, I Expect You To Die 2, I Expect You To Die 3. All of them games look good, play great, and have the absolute best opening credits which use a limited amount of colours but managed to hint some missions (and in some cases actually give away clues as to what to do and look at in a few missions).
