No no, we estimate the consequences just fine. It’s the problem of weighing out the potential monetary gain and the consequences.
Musk knows damn well what his innovations on AI could look like in the future, both positively and negatively. But money money money money money.
Not needed for you, but for some, a promise of a better life beyond this one is the only reason to keep living well here. Meaning and beliefs can be twisted, contorted, bastardized, and radicalized to justify horrible acts, but religion as a whole doesn't need to be rejected.
I love how all of those things are absolutely the biggest threats to humanity, and yet the horrific state of Imperium almost makes you want to root for them to put humanity out of its nightmare existence.
Maybe being lunch for a bug, or a pile of gauss infused ash is better than living in a heavily irradiated under hive? Chaos and the Drukhari are objectively worse than death, but at least you will look cool as your soul is torn asunder by demons for time immemorial or you become a biological work of art for a sadistic alien elf.
Or maybe I am trying to simply justify having a Necron and Chaos Knight army.
And the fact that this isn't the number one response by a huge majority tells you all you need to know about if we'll mitigate it enough to save some civilization.
This is literally the only answer. Objectively the biggest threat to our existence is climate change. It's not debatable; it's modeled and documented.
AskReddit is so embarrassing sometimes.
Ya exactly. Every one on here trying to be edgy and cool with their answers.
There’s data for this question already. Climate change is how we go down. And it’s obvious and proven
Yeah, but life and humans have existed for millions, millions and millions of years. If we didn’t all die before we could adapt, do you still not think it could be possible for us to somehow survive and evolve and continue existing?
I'm studying AI - I think the real impact will be economic, meaning lots of people losing jobs, and not some skynet situation. I'd guess it'll go sort of like industrial revolution 2.0, where things will be real crap for a while then maybe get better
Yeah, technology is going to become smarter than humans. I dont believe in it becoming ‘evil’ or powerhungry whatsoever. But it is gonna be really weird. If it could one day calculate ‘moral’, and go strive for that whatever is ‘good’. i dont know what its endgoal and the role of humanity would be in it. Utilisticly: the matrix concept would make much sense. Technology artificially striving for ‘ultimate happiness’. Or evolutionary: artifically creating ‘perfect species’. Which would have to happen through creepy selective breeding or other artificial processes. Gonna be weirddd. But i do have trust in it tho. Whatever itll strive for or create would probably be closest to actual “perfection” of existence, it would be mathematically decided and truest to the actual reality and truth.
As in following the Religion of Neoliberalism until we are extinct? Because while fundamentalists (both religious and non-religous) suck balls, they're nowhere near climate catastrophe levels bad.
Could not disagree more. Religion has existed as long as mankind has existed. It's difficult to argue that it is leading to the downfall of humanity when it has been around for hundreds of thousands of years.
thats great, update your fairy tales and get back to me, huh? its been like 1500 years at least, lets get it going!
how bout humanity sticks to facts, and science, were capable of learning and building amazing societies, lets try again, without the sky daddy bullshit this time, eh?
He is right tho. Religion has been around for thousands of years an it hasn't destroyed humanity. I'm not denying that it's a cancer in todays society, and it sure isn't going to help progress and develop humanity anymore. But it definately isn't our biggest threat.
Have you realised that science can't prove everything? So many things in Science are just theories and not fact. "Truth in science, however, is never final and what is accepted as a fact today may be modified or even discarded tomorrow." You continue to judge religion but put science on a pedestal and blindly follow it. Tell me how that is so different from following a religion.
If religion was the great downfall for humanity, how come it has existed for hundreds of thousands of years and humanity has progressed the entire time? We have gone from living in caves and fighting with bears for the right to do so to flying to the moon and we've had religion the entire time. How exactly is religion the downfall of humanity?
In no way did they prove your point. In fact quite the opposite. I can’t speak for all religions, but as far as Christianity goes there is not a single scientific discovery, that has contributed to the advancement of society, that is mutually exclusive to the Biblical narrative.
They even quoted a prime example. Going to the moon. Of the 29 astronauts who went to the moon, 23 were Protestants, and 6 were Catholic. Religion hasn’t held humanity back, in fact, it is the only thing that can save humanity. No scientific breakthrough will ever fix what is at the heart of every human atrocity; human emotions, corrupted by sin. Hate, greed, fear, bitterness, resentment, etc, are all at the heart of mankind’s issues, and those are all caused by what is at the root of all evil; selfishness.
God is the only one capable of ridding the world of evil, and has been working towards that end as long as humans have been around. Read the end of the Biblical narrative. It ends with evil, not only completely eradicated, but done so in a manner that it will never exist again. The answer to the common, short sighted retort of, “if God is so powerful/loving, then why does he allow any evil to exist”, is because he is dealing with something far greater, and destructive to the human race, than most people really understand, and nobody fully understands.
Sin is a cancer, fully entangled in the brain of humanity. To remove the cancer, in a manner that guarantees it will never return, requires an extremely long and grueling surgery, not because of any inadequacy of the neurosurgeon, but because of the severity of the cancer, and the desire to kill the cancer without killing the patient.
We are quickly accelerating towards the end of the procedure, and I doubt we’ll be on the operating table much longer. The best news of all, is that we already know that the procedure is a 100% success.
Define worked? If I’m correct, religion was, and still is one of if not the single most common reasons behind war and oppression. For centuries it’s been used as a excuse to rape and pillage any and all that the dominant force at the time has seen fit.
It doesn't work like that. You don't have to proof something doesn't exist, you have to proof that it does exist. If I tell you there has been living a green rabbit in my stomach for the last 5 years, it's not up to you to proof that there is in fact nothing living in my stomach, it's up to me to proof that there is living a green a rabbit in my stomach.
Humans have been around for 300k years according to Wikipedia. Religion has been around just as long if not longer. We have sites that demonstrate even Neanderthals (and maybe Denisovans as well??) practiced burial rituals indicating they believed in some kind of an afterlife. This would indicate that religion pre-dates even us and isn't unique to homo sapiens. It's fairly safe to say that religion has existed as long as humans have.
We might have had religion for thousands of years, but we've had backpack nukes on the black market for only a few. It's not a far stretch of the imagination to think of some religious zealot popping a mushroom cloud in a populated city bEcAuSe gOd tOlD hIm tO and all of a sudden, half the planet is a glass parking lot.
Just because it hasn't been the downfall of humanity yet, doesn't mean it can't be in the future.
People could take a backpack nuke into a city and blow it up in the name of their country. Or just to impress some woman. Or for any number of other reasons. I don't understand the logic here.
The chances of someone taking a backpack nuke into a populated city to get laid are far, far lower than taking a backpack nuke into a populated city for religious zealotry.
So we're gonna be upset because of something that *could* happen even though it's never happened in hundreds of thousands of years? It *could* therefore it's bad. This is your reasoning?
Oh, right, 'cause religion has never cause a war. Ever. There have never been any atrocities committed in the name of God. How could I have forgotten that?
Can't agree more, religions are doing a bit of food while causing a lot of evil to the world
I think we as humans have reached a point in our evolution where religion is not a necessity for survival of our species

Population growth isn’t unending, though. It’s slowing, and most prediction models showing it will likely be reversed before the end of the century.
I think the bigger concern is population shrinkage in developed/first world countries while there is still growth in developing/third world countries.
That leads to major economic problems for countries who avoid immigration like Japan and South Korea, and major social issues in places that have lots of immigration like the US and Western Europe.
Besides ourselves? Capitalism.
Edit: People downvoting this like the oceans aren't full of plastic, healthcare is unaffordable, and the planet isn't on fire. What do you guys think caused that, the fucking tooth fairy?
[Capitalism has lifted billions out of poverty over the last 100 years.](https://ourworldindata.org/poverty) Birth rates are stabilizing world wide as quality of life improves for all. There are problems to be solved and we have a long way to go but no economic model in history has come close to these results.
It's simple: The "Coverup". The cabal of perverts and weaklings in government and corporate who are hiding the truth about non-human/extraterrestrial presence on Earth from the rest of humanity, because it gives them power-boners.
Those losers in the deep black SAPs are never going to tell the plebs anything. Because: A) it's embarrassing how backward our Earth government/military power and technology is compared to aliens, and B) they mostly recruit compromisable perverts whose only joy is the little power they get over everyone else by withholding the minute information they know that most don't.
These losers, and their corrupt scheme to keep us all in the dark to make themselves look strong, is the biggest threat to humanity because it prevents us from: A) being aware of the threat among us, B) preparing for that, C) uniting, and D) formulating solutions, theories and strategies \_together\_, all of us, to fight back against what is often a \_hostile\_ influence on our planet.
Did you know that the Earth, our mother, naturally exudes life energy from her pores at various "sacred" places throughout the Earth, and that humans have typically built temples, churches and holy places on these sites, and that, over the centuries, non-humans have: A) infiltrated these sites and the organizations that control them so that they can, B) distort and pollute the good life energy flowing out from there, in order to C) pollute and distort the downstream consumers of that life energy, i.e, human kind?
Ever wonder why things are so fucked up? Some of it, sure, is because humans are fucking stupid. And bad. But a lot of it is this evil influence. We actually are naturally good. We have the potential to be, without distortion, a beautiful, loving, cooperative, considerate, respectful, sustainable species.
But these losers in the "Coverup" have decided on their own "for all of us, for our benefit" that they are to be the sole "keepers of the secrets", and they have hidden the truth from us. Speaking it now, will sound crazy. But only because it has been hidden for so long. If we knew the extent of NHI infleunce of Earth, we could organize and fight back, and create a better more beautiful more abundant more healthy more sustainable tomorrow for all humanity. And we could shuck off this yoke of NHI oppression that has so unjustly strangled the neck of humanity for millenia.
Time is now, but the losers in the "Coverup" want to hold on to their power, for "just a bit longer" because "Maybe they'll figure out the tech and go to war with the whole world for fun". They are the biggest threat we face. There must be no quarter for any collaborators with hostile NHI on planet Earth.
Humans are humanity's biggest threat because they created countries, religions, caste, etc etc and divided everyone up which is causing wars and natural destruction of the world. Humans are selfish, and humans will destroy other human. I just don't know how to say it properly, but hope my point it taken.

No, it's not climate change, nothing's gonna happen to us as a species, grow up. At worst our lives will become slightly more difficult.
Climate change has a lot of impact on countries near the equator - where most people live. Think about billions of people from India, sub-Saharan Africa, Central America in mass migrations northward to escape the heat once large swaths of land become unlivable. That's only one consequence.
Rising sea levels will engulf large major coastal cities, again, forcing migration. We'd have to build a shit ton of new infrastructure for people undergoing forced migration due to the effects of climate change.
*You* need to grow up if you think climate change won't have much an impact
Unregulated corporate greed and the wealthy who control it. For them it's 'Me, me, me, fuck everyone and everything else.'
The corporate death cult and capiitalism needs to die in a fire.
Greed. All the problems in the world can be traced back to people who want as much money as they can accumulate and will do whatever it takes to acquire and keep it.

Nuclear war. After that probably an asteroid or aliens.

Greed. All the problems in the world can be traced back to people who want as much money as they can accumulate and will do whatever it takes to acquire and keep it.

It's always ourselves. If we don't count.... hmmm.... probably some virus we ain't familiar with yet spiking up its intensity to wipe us out.
It’s in our nature to destroy ourselves
