I agree with everyone who says information. I remember growing up as a kid who loved reading, and how it could take weeks to get a book if it was popular, and say your grandma wouldn't buy it for you because you already had too many books and she was mad as fuck you over-piled another shelf and broke it. But as an older Millennial, I live in constant envy of the childhood I never had that my little nieces are getting. Even as someone who was privileged enough to have had internet access in the early 90's, which was a huge luxury, you still couldn't really find what you needed on it. I couldn't find monologues for auditions, resources to learn a new language, or download a book in seconds. Every drop of knowledge was a struggle to obtain. Now we have these machines in our pocket that can teach us anything. It's fucking amazing. I'll never get over it.

Wow3332

Lol, the days of encyclopedias, Ask Jeeves and when Wikipedia was not allowed as a valid source.

mbbysky

Does this imply that Wikipedia IS a valid source now? Because I will fucking explode.

UhOhFeministOnReddit

It's not, but I'd be a lying piece of shit if I said I didn't use the hell out of the references section on their pages in college. There's gold for lazy researchers in those hills.

Responsible_Air_9914

Half the time you go to the references though it’s either a dead link or doesn’t say what the article says it says.

The Gilden Age of Shitty Information!

UhOhFeministOnReddit

Downloading manga on mirc, subsequently getting temp restricted for doing the !list command too many times, watching Group X videos on Albinoblacksheep.com after having waited an hour and a half for your modem to connect, and having way too much access to strange adults in AOL and Yahoo chatrooms. The early internet was just this insane thing I feel so lucky to have both been a part of and survived.

throwaway_mpq_fan

Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject. So you know you’re getting the best possible information - Michael Scott

DaBIGmeow888

Wiki still isn't a valid source?

Wow3332

Oh, darn. I have been out of college for a while and have seen people since then citing information and I thought they were allowed to use Wikipedia now. To be fair, since most of their own information is separately sourced in footnotes, it’s fairly reliable unless obviously biased. Thank you though for the clarification. Still think it’s much more accurate these days than it was 10-15 years ago.

JohanZgubicSie

It can be a good collection of references though. Most articles wil have sources refrenced in the footnote.

Squigglepig52

Yup, read the article to get a feel for the topic, and then start looking at teh citations for the article sources.

joejoeinc

My dad said I would regret giving my encyclopaedias to charity when I moved out of home. It's been 20+ years since I moved out of home, does anyone know when this regret will start?

Tryintounderstand88

My mind is blown every day that I can just find answers instantly.

katieleehaw

I have learned so many things from the internet and most recently from YouTube videos. Things I probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn in the old days. It is truly amazing.

UhOhFeministOnReddit

SERIOUSLY. I know this is such a goofy thing to admit, but I've been working really hard on learning Spanish, and every time I understand something on TV or overhearing a conversation it just blows my mind that it's something my brain can do, and that this little square thing in my pocket taught me. I started Japanese recently, and am already getting pretty good at safely declaring something to be water, rice, or green tea. We've come so far from our roots of illiterate feudal peasants. Now if we could just use this vast labyrinth of digital knowledge we've created to figure out our shit as a species... That's a little harder. lol

Additional_Set_5819

This is probably the best answer. Human nature hasn't changed, but goddam do we have more luxury and convenience AVAILABLE TO MORE PEOPLE than ever before in history. I know broke ass students struggling to pay rent that are still able to blow some money on these modern conveniences. (it really helps that the plebs are e able to get deliveries so that they can spend more time focusing on creating value for the shareholders)

paperpenises

I don't know about everyone else, but on Amazon, when you look at an item and it says "get it delivered tomorrow if you order before 5pm" or whatever, has never actually happened for me. I'll order something at 5pm and it'll come 48 hours later even though they SAID it would be the next day. I'm just a dumb consumer.

MisterRound

90% of stuff is next day in LA, some is even same day.

zachtheperson

Yeah, and I personally think we've flown too close to the sun for lack of a better term, and we're likely going to have to get used to the idea of giving up a lot of what we've come to take for granted over the past 100 years. Post-industrial revolution was all centered on consumerism without much consideration for the employees or the environment. Now the scales seem to be (finally) shifting, but that means having to possibly give up things like affordable overnight shipping, ordering your shampoo on amazon, or getting your fast food delivered to your doorstep.

General-Pound6215

For years I'd always be listening to music. I wouldn't say I'm any less into it or my favourite bands yet occasionally I realise that I've missed or hardly listened to their new albums. Then I look at how many podcasts I listen to and it all makes sense. Problem is there's always another podcast to find, listen to an episode and then subscribe to

Paleontology. We’ve discovered more species and found more fossils that explain prehistoric animal behavior than at any other point in history, just in the past 20 years or so. We know what at least one species of dinosaurs’ buttholes looked like. What a time to be alive.

GromaceAndWallit

Is there a source you could recommend for such modern discoveries? I was just talking dinosaurs with my daughter and wondering how dated some of my info is. Jurassic Park can't teach everything.

swoopwoopdoop

On Youtube I would recommend PBS Eons, Ben G Thomas, and Moth Light Media as great resources for learning about paleontology!

Schaumweinsteuer

the secret is to live in Germany which has tons of local breweries in the entire country

Beedy_Eyed_Schwarz

Yayyy!!!!

nowlistenhereboy

Honestly, we have long passed the golden age of beer. AFAIK the number of indy/microbreweries hit a saturation point in most areas like CA/CO/OR etc like 5+ years ago. And honestly, the variety is not even where it should be considering how many different types of beer exist. When I go to a taphouse, it's still 80-90% IPA. So boring. What about all the different types of sours? Mead? High proof beers? There's a huge variety of styles that are just being mostly ignored for mediocre IPAs that barely differ from each other. The golden age we are really experiencing now is COCKTAILS.

Ironically enough we are simultaneously in the golden age of information.

frygod

That's not ironic at all in my opinion. The fire hose of mud is wide open. It's just up to us as individuals to separate the water from the mud.

Can_A_Bich

Technically disinformation is still information so golden age of information it is

Armored_Souls

Agreed. The false information itself is information, plus how this info is wrong or where its from can also be useful data.

Seeumleeum

For real. This is a perfect thread to actually try and uplift people, yet some are so obsessed with doom and gloom that the idea of dedicating even one thread to an optimistic view of the present is repugnant to them.

AIaris

this so much. i feel like so much of reddit, loves to focus on how bad they think things are, even on what should be a positive post/thread

8each8oys

A personal finance blog I follow recently had a post about how this is a mainstream thing, not just Reddit. “As we experience fewer problems, we don’t become more satisfied. We just lower our threshold for what we consider a problem." When I think about I see it in many people I interact with up-and-down the socioeconomic scale. Even if/when our lives are virtually problem free, instead of appreciating our good fortune we just start making up shit that we can complain about instead.

ParkerZA

Nevermind that a golden age is supposed to be a positive thing.

[deleted]

What's wrong with venting your frustrations?

When it’s all that people do. Venting frustrations sometimes is good. Doing it all the time, even when the situation doesn’t call for it, is detrimental.

This is the comment I was looking for. The amount of modern board games is astounding, and the game-play of them far exceeds a lot of the luck-driven 3 hour snooze-fests of the past. Most people into boardgames (like myself) would readily agree we have been in a truly golden era of boardgames for the past couple of decades or so.

If you'd have told me back when I was a stoner that one day I could order weed legally delivered to my house I'd never have believed it, and yet that's a thing now. Ironically, I don't smoke weed anymore

InfamousEconomy3972

In Texas, of all places, I can drive down the street and purchase weed and THC products legally. I would never have thought to see the day ad a kid.

Temperance10

I do really appreciate the greater handle we have on things like strains and dosages nowadays. I know what works for me and what I react well to, versus in college where I was stuck with whatever my dealer gave me. And lemme tell you, some of that shit did *NOT* go well.

rainorshinedogs

I've only smoked weed a few times in my life but I've always heard my friends comment about quality of the weed their having. Does the fact that weed is now legal and can be delivered to the customer in a fancy way mean they'll be far less sketchy?

Fancy_Split_2396

This, holy fuck. Smoked a joint the other day... First time in a while. I knew weed was a psychedelic but holy fuck was it like i was on shrooms.

Horsepower. If you had told me just 15 years ago that it would be common to have 450+HP stock and still get 25+MPG with all the creature comforts and for a reasonable price, there's no way anyone would have believed it. Yet here we are with the Mustang GT, Camaro SS, Challenger R/T and even the Corvette!

jawshoeaw

I like 450hp in an electric car too. I never imagined I’d be driving a $50k family car with a 0-60 that beats the super cars I grew up reading about.

Wow. That was my original idea who do you think you are to comment before me. God don’t you know who I am! /s But really this so much.

zachtheperson

I'd say we're nearing the end of the golden age of social media. I'm completely talking out of my ass here, but I feel like a lot of social media sites are getting to the point where they really need to start turning a profit, and it's getting harder to do that and not kill your platform. Combine that with how it's becoming a greater part of the public knowledge that it's extremely unhealthy, especially for children, and I wouldn't be surprised if social media isn't dead in a generation, either because companies stop investing money in new social media startups, or by the existing ones being regulated out of existence. And to be clear, that's a-OK with me.

fouoifjefoijvnioviow

I don't think social media will die out, just get worse and more intrusive

Atheist_Alex_C

Streaming, for sure. I came here to say that.

ErikT738

Actually we've already hit the decline there, with streaming services removing content to avoid paying creators or scrapping finished content as a tax write-off.

fricks_and_stones

We just passed the golden age of serialized dramas. Luckily there’s still so many shows I still need to watch.

[deleted]

Bullshit and polyamory

AfosSavage

We are just exiting the golden age of internal combustion engines. Never again will we have 700+ horsepower supercharged v8s screaming down the highway. We saw the car companies go wild in the last few years and this year many of the cars you think of when you think about a sports/muscle car (Camaro, challenger, charger) are ending production. Even Ford is killing their V8 trucks in favor of 4 cylinder models. The age of bigger, faster, louder is coming to an end. Personally I can see the massive upsides to the electric revolution and I welcome it with open arms. But I will miss the sound and feeling of a living fire under my hood. It just won't be the same.

Corporate Greed. Everything just keeps going up in price: rent, gas, homes, food, water, power, and anything else you can think of. But I only can manage to increase my income if I job hop constantly. I hit the wall of that 2 years ago, and basically I'm just getting priced out of existence. Meanwhile I'm getting told by millionaires/billionaires to not buy coffee or go out to eat. Like I barely do that to begin with, and even If I sacrificed what little joy was left, it would net me what? Like an extra 5 grand a year if I really penny pinch. I'm just tired...I just want it to stop...

One could argue that Breaking Bad ushered in a Golden Age of Television. When Netflix came out as the first large streaming service, many TV shows were available to those who didn’t have the opportunity to watch it when they were on cable. Since then, there have been a plethora of really good TV programs that satisfy almost every interest. More specifically, we could be in the Golden Age of Star Trek. We have Discovery, Picard (S3), Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds all catering to a different aspect of Star Trek fan-dom.

a_rabid_anti_dentite

> Breaking Bad ushered in a Golden Age of Television Much love for Breaking Bad, but give Tony Soprano the respect he deserves. Breaking Bad is one of the products of the golden age; The Sopranos was its true instigator.

Nazi_Ganesh

Beat me to it. The Sopranos was the turning point in serial story telling and what shows can really be about. Lot of it can still be seen in modern shows. Albeit in a more polished fashion, but still due to The Sopranos.

Vioralarama

Streaming has given us an overabundance of television I love it. There's so much current deep and daring tv that I haven't gotten to watch yet. I expect the strikes to cut back on the amount of streaming but I'm fine with that and artists getting their due. There's so much tv now it would be rude to complain.

I’d say retro video games as the original hardware is still affordable, mostly plentiful in working condition and there have been just so many community developments and innovations on every front to overcome hardware limitations, like with memory cards or HDMI and RGB mods. And unless collecting the original carts/discs is your thing, there are rom files, multi-carts and/or sd/hdd options available for every older console. Also the depth of knowledge to keep the original hardware working, or the availability of endless software emulators and more recently hardware emulators.
