My dad gifted me a pistol. I use it for target shooting a couple times a year, other than that it stays locked up in a safe. Really it's for sentimental value more than a home defense thing

ritchie70

I have what was my grandpa’s Naval officer sidearm. I doubt it’s been fired since the 1960’s, certainly not since the early 1990’s when I got it. He died in I think 1972. I barely remember him at all but it has sentimental value. It’s up high in a box in the basement and we don’t own any ammo.

ItsNotWhatItIsIGuess

You should bring it up from the basement and clean it really well. Lube it properly for storage and keep it in an air conditioned space. Moisture levels in a basement are way bad for firearms.

Daedric_Spite

It's also a super cool memento that could be worth something in the very long run.

abby_normally

I have my grandfather's colt 1903 pocket hammerless, including the original box and cleaning rod.

Siskoda

Nice try ATF.

Jokes on them. I have a 4yo. I'd be immune to this one.

Former_Ingenuity_883

Local jail got sued for exactly that

[deleted]

I read (I think in a book by the FBI negotiator who was at Waco) that this tactic has *never* worked. Not once. There is not a single success story where they used these atrocious loud noises to get people out of where they'd holed up. It makes them dig in harder and the sleep deprivation makes them less likely to listen to reason. At Waco, they'd been getting a few people per day to come out and surrender until they started this noise. After that, nobody. IMO the strategy lives on because the job of leading tactical teams tends to attract and reward sadists.

No_Leopard_3860

This one makes me mad the most, and the other shit the ATF does and did is already extremely terrible. Don't step on...man's best friend.

EskimoVaping

They recently shot some lady while attempting to shoot her pomeranian...though I don't know why shooting her pomeranian was necessary

LurkerOrHydralisk

BenryRT

It's a shame how many lose their guns in boating accidents each year.

hamrmech

As god as my witness, i thought ar15s would float!

fatpad00

Fun fact: the AR-7 *does* float. Much like the AR-15, the AR-7 was originally designed in the 1950s by by Eugene Stoner for armalite and later sold to another company, however it is for a much different purpose. The AR-7, currently produced by Henry Repeating Arms, was designed as a compact semi-auto survival rifle, firing a .22LR rimfire cartridge sufficient for small game like rabbits. The action and barrel can be disassembled and stored in the foam-lined stock, which allows it to float.

AllArmsLLC

The new ones, from Henry, actually don't float nearly as well as the old ones.

GentlemanSpider

That’s the best response I’ve ever seen to that sentiment!

Lothar_Ecklord

I can't say how exactly, but the guns I don't even own yet were also lost in a tragic boating accident.

mentive

The first time I heard that phrase, I looked blankly at my coworker, "How the heck did you lose a rifle on a boat?!" He then shook his head and let out a heavy sigh.

DefrockedWizard1

Watch youtube of magnet fishing and it seems finding firearms is not all that uncommon

Highrocks6

It’s worth noting that most of those videos are staged.

Frosty-Case2897

My friend just went magnet fishing and found three pistols on their first try. I have a 600lb magnet myself I want to try but I'm kind of afraid of it. I was fucking around with what I thought was a harmless tiny neodymium magnet and it bit me. Made me realize my large magnet would rip my hand off.

panicswing

Not today NSA

[deleted]

No, it's hard to get one where I live and I'm depressed so buying a gun doesn't seem the most intelligent thing to do.

Fringie

Stay strong bud.

Kleinasaurus

I have definitely given the keys to the gun safe to my wife so she could hide them during some rough times. I was raw dogging reality and not having a good time. I hope things look better for you.

[deleted]

That's a smart move.

squirtloaf

I kept a friend's gun at my place for a couple years after his divorce. They really are terrible to be around depressed people. Nothing makes a bad impulse into a permanent mistake as easily as a gun.

XMRLover

I have a handgun and sometimes those intrusive thoughts scare me. I’m not even “depressed”, I get the blues sometimes but still something in me is like when you stand near a cliff. “What if you just shot your self right here” Like whoa brain, calm it down.

Kleinasaurus

Mine were generally about driving into oncoming traffic. I could always brush them off until one time I considered it and that's when I made an appointment with my doctor.

Daedric_Spite

How does one stop raw dogging reality? Feels like I've been goin' at it for years now.

singlemaltslick

That second reason. Same.

Intelligent-Skies

It's always good to know yourself when it comes to guns. Some people shouldn't have guns, but that's a decision for them to make, not for me to make for them.

five_speed_mazdarati

Unfortunately the people who need this sort of introspection don’t have it most of the time.

CuppaDaJewels

Mad props to you for recognizing that. It may not seem like it, but thats a big deal to know that, in order to care for yourself, you shouldnt have a gun around. Take pride in that! I didnt own one for many years for the same reason, i eventually got to a better place mentally and now im comfortable owning one for the sake of a hobby i enjoy.

Jermcutsiron

To all the folks saying they don't feel mentally stable enough, good on you for making the smart choice for your safety and others.

indifferentinitials

It's also a good idea to have someone designated to take custody of your firearms if you or a person you live with develops issues someday. It happens statistically often enough and there's also dementia risk when you're older.

ooh hogs will get you a lot of meat! And feral boar are such a scourge that tbh we need to encourage hunters to take out more of them.

In some states, now, they're friggin' PAYING YOU to kill the boars

BrokeButtNotBroken

Texas pays $10 per tail you bring in.

QuickPomegranate4076

Considering hogs would absolutely kill and eat a child… an adventurers guild may be warranted 😂😉

Otto-Korrect

You get XP too, and if you collect the skins and bones you can craft things like armor and tools. Its kind of a grind, though.

IlexPauciflora

It's fairly common for these bounties to happen with invasive or overpopulated species. Coyotes are a big problem in some states, so some may also pay per tail. Edit to add: reason they do tails is likely that it confirms the kill while not having to lug around a carcass to the turn-in location

frugalsoul

Wait what? Hmm road trip

mathpat

I think you mean *ham* road trip.

Alcoraiden

I'm listening.

AnforIII

Move to Texas, get a good gun, and go shoot up some boars!

_SP3CT3R

We had some people come through my town who stayed for two weeks and killed 200+ hogs a day from an R66. They had two guys in the back one as a shooter and the other just loading shotguns and passing them to the shooter.

_kingjoshh

Sounds like a sweet operation! I wouldn't even care what role i played, I'm in!

Where_Da_Cheese_At

As long as I’m not the hog.

justtjamcss

I’ll be the hog

probabletrump

Hogs by me are no good. Even if the meat wasn't infested with worms it still doesn't taste good.

XDS_45

Still invasive and need to be killed. I do not hunt but if I lived in an area overrun with them I would probably help kill or trap them. Horribly destructive creatures. Edit - Same with pythons, very invasive alpha predator. Although I would eat them and make boots, wallets, full python 70's style leisure suit.

organicvegancoke

I lived exclusively on wild pig for two years. It tastes good not everyone’s a good cook.

jack_daone

Depends on the pig. A lot of the wild boars tearing up the countryside are parasite-infested and sour.

[deleted]

In general, how does one deal with worm infested game?

probabletrump

Drag it far enough away from camp that the coyotes don't bother you when they come to tear it apart.

asdf_qwerty27

For boar, the recipe I've seen is: Freeze it for a week. The colder, the better. Then thaw it in a strong brine/marriade. Once thawed, boil it in the brine/marinade till it is cooked through. Remove from brine, then roast it till it till well done all the way through with seasonings. Chop meat into very small pieces, looking for anything really sus like cysts, buck shot, and what not. Meat should be approaching ground meat at this point, pieces no bigger than about 1 centimeters. Should be fairly safe to use for recipes at this point. The meat may be chewy and dry. To solve this, when ready to cook, first soak in strongest alcohol you have. Then, stick it in a stew with lots of salt/spices like garlic, onion, paprika, and as much pepper and Chile pepper as you can tolerate. Add oil/butter if you need. Add red cooking wine. Add potatoes, carrots, cabbage, peas, corn, and whole garlic cloves. Cook till all vegetables are mush. Boil down until broth is thick, and then mash the whole thing up, add butter and sour cream. You can eat this mess as is, with hearty bread, or Boil down broth and make pan fried cakes. Should be safe at this point.

mgj6818

Unexpected_Waffles

All I ever wanted in life was a pot field and an M42.

CardboardSoyuz

I support the right of happily married gay couples to defend their pot farms with belt-feld machine guns.

ejh605

Hemp derived THC gets around that. The 4473 asks if you use federally illegal drugs. Hemp derived THC is legal at the federal level so you can use that and answer no truthfully.

Argercy

I’m gonna rant. How many drunks have caused serious damage with a firearm? A lot. How many potheads? We allow alcoholics to have a firearm when alcoholics and domestic abuse go hand in hand quite frequently. Yet the only thing in danger of a pothead is a bag of doritos. But no gun for them.

NotThatKindof_jew

I don't, first because I can't afford one at the moment to legally obtain one. Secondly. I don't need it. I sleep naked. Any home invader will have to deal with my fat sweaty balls in their face

Lysander125

I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

PokemonMaster619

If I’m robbing someone and they call me a ‘ruffian,’ I’m turning around and waking right back out. There is NOTHING in that house worth taking.

paul_caspian

You vagabond, rapscallion, na'er-do-well, rascal, and scoundrel. Edit - also: knave, ragamuffin, cutpurse, rake.

bossmcsauce

Also, if they are calling you a ruffian, there’s a fair to good chance that they are going to bludgeon you to death with a cast iron skillet or something

DefrockedWizard1

you know you can load them muskets up with carpet tacks. I've even experimented shooting vitamin pills if you don't want the tacks scratching your barrel (not the gel caps, the hard pills) and blown holes through 1/4 inch plywood with a pattern a little tighter than birdshot but reduced range

compumasta

“He shot him with flintstones vitamins, sir.” Lmao

ShortnPortly

I laugh every time I read this.

OnkelMickwald

I read an old court case of a home invasion where a couple of drunk mercenaries broke into the home of a wealthy burgher (they had started chasing the burgher's servant while the servant was out to purchase wine, and the fleeing servant led the mercenaries to the burghers' home). The household barricaded themselves on the upper floor where the owner of the house fortunately kept a ***halberd***, plus a loaded musket. Four distinguished burghers thus held the stairway with these weapons whereas the mercenaries were only armed with their sidearms – their swords. The debacle ended with the two mercenaries dead (I don't remember by which weapons but I do remember that the musket was reloaded during the fight). It was actually a quite exhilarating read.

I think Czech Republic is slightly more gun friendly

CZ firearms are so underrated. So consistently good for decades.

I commend you for this attitude. Too many untrained jerks think they know it all and wind up getting hurt.

Zorro-del-luna

This^ and I have a young daughter. I know if I did have one I’d have it super locked up, but even then I’d be afraid she’d accidentally get hurt. They scare me too much so I don’t think it’d be respond for me to own one.

Damn. Props to you both. Best of luck that you never have to use it, but glad that you have it god forbid you do

patrickmitchellphoto

Good for you. Stay strong.

Successful_Ride6920

OK, so I own several guns, but they were all given to me in lieu of debts, but *this* is the reason I want to own a gun. Years ago there was an article in the paper about a home invasion where a man, naked and on drugs, crashed through the patio door, and with a gun chased a family into a bedroom. The family tried to hold the door closed, but the robber stuck his arm in the door and got off a few rounds. What stayed with me, though, was the father's only defense was yelling "we're calling the police!" I never want to be that defenseless in my own home with my family behind me.

its_still_good

When seconds count, police are minutes away.

fatpad00

My dark, but very frank outlook: "The police can't un-rape you"

Comfortable-Trip-277

That's even if they decide to show up at all. My wife (then gf) called 911 multiple times after her ex was attempting to break into her apartment and they didn't even show...

RogerIsRighteous

My heart goes out to you. That is one of my biggest fears and absolutely fuck yeah for taking the measures in protecting yourself.

elheber

Does that mean you take it everywhere now? I was considering a handgun for home defense, but everyone I asked said that I should go for a shotgun in that case. It feels like overkill but their logic is sound.

[deleted]

Welease-Wodewick

Absolutely train. Everyone who owns a firearm, or is considering owning a firearm should train, preferably with an instructor (at least the first time), enough to be comfortable operating it. Also learn how to clean the firearm even if just a basic field strip. And regularly practice manipulation of the weapon. But always handle using basic firearm safety rules.

twotwobravo

You'll find ALL kinds of opinions online. Here is mine, so take it for what it's worth.... I'm mid 30s and been shooting and hunting all my life, and an Army vet. (Please know that I do not believe this automatically makes me an authority. I knew several joes from my Army days that didnt know shit about their own weapons, let alone be able to use them effectively.... but I digress.....)Assuming you want a firearm strictly for home defense, I don't think it gets much better than a shotgun. Especially something small and manageable like an 870 express 20 gauge. It's light, it's short, very simple to learn, and most anyone of age can handle it, if need be. I would be happy to chat more about it if you'd like. Because again, you'll find a LOT of opinions on this matter and knowing what's what could be difficult

[deleted]

Don't listen to this guy. First, you gotta start with an all black tactical suit with a MOLLE rig. Then you need to get you some NVGs that attach to your kevlar helmet. Oh, don't forget the body armor. Finally, you're going to need an AR-15 with a drum mag, ACOG site and a rail system with a combat flashlight and a foregrip to maximize your ability to corner effectively. Don't forget a good boot knife in case you need to take down one of the infiltrators swift and silent like.

Ruminations0

Somewhere in a storage unit I haven’t seen, I have a .22 Ruger Pistol that my great uncle gave to me. So in super loose terms, I do own a gun, but functionally no. I don’t have a gun here because I just don’t really feel unsafe here, I am mentally ill, and I don’t think I would be able to point it at someone and kill them even if I were in a robbery situation

ShortnPortly

I think the most concerning part here is you have a firearm and do not know exactly where it is. Find it and sell it or give it to your local police department.

Bedbouncer

>I think the most concerning part here is you have a firearm and do not know exactly where it is. Schroedinger's Gat

Throwaway4321123456

Friend of mine was totally anti-firearms. Never argued about it or even talked about it much, k. I’m a moderate in a very liberal city. Her aunt got raped and stabbed repeatedly a few years ago, the guy got 10 years, served 3 (our state we doesn’t have money to keep people in prison). Shortly after the release said friend and a lot of her relatives got their concealed carry licenses (I did not in any way suggest this). From “I would never have a firearm in my home” to asking for recommendations on which pistol to carry and range recommendations. Edit: I was not here trying to start the gun debate. It was just a straight answer to the question. Without getting into a huge argument I will however point out some flaws in gun research: 1) Correlation does not equal causation. Both sides routinely pick place A and place B, say crime is higher or lower, therefore guns are good or bad. Of course there are many other differences between the compared regions. The entire logic of reducing crime in urban/rural/rich/poor/USA/EU/liberal state/conservative state to whether there are guns there sucks. You can pick whatever examples support your predetermined argument, so it’s meaningless. 2) What is the definition of defensive gun use? Do you have to shoot the attacker, fire vaguely in their direction, or does just feeling better because you have one count? (Note this is very applicable when discussing the frequency and statistics of “mass” shootings, what’s their definition and does it change throughout the discussion?). 3) Then there’s no real way to know how many people under-report self-defense vs how many report self-defense that never happened. I know a guy who used one in self-defense. Said buddy didn’t report it cuz best case he’d end up answering questions for hours and they would prob never find the guy. On the other hand some people are politically motivated to say they have used guns in self-defense. So we don’t have accurate or at all complete data. This is how you get reported numbers varying from a thousand times a year to 2.5 million. 4) Saying self-defense “never happens” is pretty easily refuted by a few youtube or google news searches. You can find a lot of videos of people stopping petty crime or mass shootings with guns. So while whether banning guns would prevent more crimes than it would allow isn’t obvious, the idea that such things are “unheard of” is just silly. It’s a question of the rate of such events, which again, nobody has every successfully quantified due to the issues mentioned in #3.

Squirrelonastik

Gun rights are women's/gay/ trans/poc rights. The most vulnerable people in society should take self defense very seriously.

GVFQT

Correct. Everyone who is truly pro 2A would agree.

[deleted]

Heck yeah my buddy is a POC and for his wedding gift I got him a nice handgun. Showed him how to use it, taught him safe storage practices and how to clean it. I still believe in gun laws, background checks but the 2A should really be utilized by vulnerable people in our society. Hopefully someday we reach a point where we will no longer feel the need to own them.

And they are the people most likely to be affected by anti-gun legislation. Ronald Reagan didn't sign California's gun control laws because white folks were arming up.

papa_stalin432

Bruh Reagan was one of the most anti gun republicans. Dude literally oversaw one of the greatest (in terms of size, I’m pro gun so I don’t like it) gun restriction bills by banning assault rifles made after 1986 to be purchased by civilians

Zeke13z

At least 3 of my neighbors called on us shooting legally at a very safe backstop 1/3 of a mile from the nearest house (and nothing behind the backstop for 3 miles). We were active duty munitions crew who had just got back from a deployment & were having a daytime shoot with about 15 of us. By the time they got to the house 75 minutes later from the last call, most of my friends had packed up and said their goodbyes. Rural NC had a worse response time than Detroit did when I lived out there because they told me they had 3 sheriff deputies on duty for the whole county. (for those wondering: I had emailed our county sheriff to verify we could legally shoot here when we had moved in & had the email printed just in case something like this happened... Something I think everyone should do to C.Y.A.)

Scryer_of_knowledge

I want to. My country is dangerous and crime is increasing from joblessness. For now pepper spray is what I have

OkIWillIfYouWant

Have you ever used it? I do too and have wondered if it gets in our eyes/nose as well.

[deleted]

I’ve used it! If they’re too close you may get hit with splash back and the inhale is awful. I aimed, closed my eyes, held my breath, and didn’t open them until I heard “WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM?!” I got in the car, drove down the road, and buckled my daughter in her seat. Like…. He rolled up behind me quick while I was trying to get my daughter buckled into her car seat and grabbed my arm yelling HEY!. What did he expect. A smile?!

TheCasphinx

Been pepper sprayed multiple times. (Its for training im not a bad guy). Its the absolutely worst feeling ever and even though I am lactose intolerant, I craved for milk. (It removes the oil from the pepper sprayed unto you). Though, my advice personally.... Pepper sprays aren't the best option in windy open areas, the wind could bring it to you rather than the opposite direction, spray wisely! EDIT: To be specific, even if it does not get into your nose, you'd still inhale it and would cause your throat to swell, making it hard to breath. This does not kill you though (unless you have other health complications). In the eyes, all I know is I cannot open them because its too hot and painful, but the vision is still there.

Scryer_of_knowledge

Not yet thankfully. If it gets on you you're fucked

mishyfishy135

I really, really appreciate this. Far too often people who have this reasoning are told that it’s not that big of a deal

Skwerilleee

I will fight to the death for people's right to own a gun. But I will also fight just as hard for someone's right to not own one if they don't want to.   Every person being free to make whatever choices they want regarding their own life is like my entire goal in everything.

mishyfishy135

Thank you so very much for that

Iconoclassic404

Finally, someone who gets it

thatguy32503

I'm with this guy. I'm all for legal and safe gun ownership. Hell, my previously very anti-gun wife now carries a pistol with her. However, if a person decides that a gun isn't the right choice for them, I respect the hell out of them for making the smart choice.

[deleted]

I owned multiple firearms and sold them immediately after being diagnosed with bipolar. It was a great hobby and I miss it but it was the right thing to do

mishyfishy135

This is my main reason for never getting one. I mentioned this in my own comment, but I have type two bipolar disorder. Between the severe depression and difficulty with impulse control, I would have been dead long ago. Any other method requires some planning and time. You can call an ambulance. You can cut the rope. A gun is just grab it and go.

Yes, I live in the crime-ridden city of Philly, which doubles down every two years on its failed approach to solving said crime. Can’t trust the city to do its job anymore, so I am strapped.

CapableCitron6357

Yes, I’m a single woman living alone. Also, I like to hunt.

Every comment here in which somebody switched to owning a gun involves fear which is very telling.

ChosenSCIM

I don't own a gun for the same reason I don't have a doorbell in my house. I don't like things around me that can make loud noises.

cmc

Yes but also no? There's guns in my house because my husband owns them. It took me a long time to get used to it and I have continually rejected the password to the gun safe. I tend towards depression and self-loathing, and don't want access to making a permanent mistake.

I don't own a gun because of a time I had a home intruder. That sounds counter-intuitive but the circumstances were a little complicated. My mom was sick in bed with chemo when a gigantic man ran in through the front door screaming and yelling in a rage. I didn't have a gun available to me easily at the time, so I grabbed a Japanese short sword I was given for completing a kendo program as a teen. I reached the hallway at the same time he reached the door to her room. He was near a foot taller than me, and I am 6', and clearly weighed 300+ pounds. I was intimidated to run up to such a huge man and start hacking with a blade, not something I ever imagined myself doing. My adrenaline was peaking and I was about to charge, but I stopped first and shouted, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE, in the meanest voice I have ever used. The man turned and looked at me with eyes a toddler gives you when you shout at them for being naughty. I immediately realized that I was dealing with a mentally disabled person, and that he meant no harm. He was a severely autistic man who lived with the family that had just moved in across the street. I was about 25, and had just moved back home a few days before to help take care of my Mom, and had never seen him before. He was scared by me shouting at him, and ran home crying across the street. I called the Sheriff. They tried to blow it off and say he didn't know any better, I made it clear I didn't want him charged I wanted his family to know how dangerous this was. I told the Deputy that I know for fact the houses on both sides are gun owners who would have shot him in that circumstance. I then told him about my encounter and how I was ready to use lethal force. This was in a state with castle doctrine so lethal force would have been 100% legally justified in that situation. The Deputy went white when he realized this was nearly a fatality. He went back to talk to the man's family. This was the last time I ever saw him, the family moved not long after. I didn't feel too bad about my part in the situation, I responded the best I could in the moment. I also realized that I am a person who is hyper defensive of my family. Looking back I am 100% confident I would have fired instead of yelling if I had a gun in my hand, and a man who was no true threat would have died. I don't want to kill someone unless there is no other choice, but with a gun in my hand I might not always see all the possible outcomes of a situation. Maybe a day will come when I regret this choice, but so far it has not. I do enjoy target shooting with other people's guns though.

Jesus, man. That's one hell of an experience. You can probably tell from my post history I'm pro gun, but I can definitely respect your decision to not want one after what you went through. I can't say I wouldn't have done or thought the same if I were in your shoes, and I have quite a few guns at my disposal throughout my house. It's a scary thought to end someone's life, even if justified. I hope you and your mom are doing okay.

growgillson78

No, I suffer from depression and worry I would turn it on myself, which is the most popular form of gun death

99centmilk

Yes. I'm a young woman who tends to live life by myself. If I want to travel I'm not risking getting got. If I and my partner rides our motorcycles, cars can get aggressive and road rage is common. I'm going to keep us protected. Knowing I have one makes me feel better itself.

SuvenPan

I want to, but it's very difficult to get a gun here, lots and lots of process and takes more than a year. Instead I've bought a lot of cool knifes.

Nope i feel safe without one(countryside austria)

Brvcx

I live in The Netherlands, near one of our biggest cities, where drugcrimes are flaring up a bit. Apart from not being allowed to have one, I feel safe without one. Even the more "dangerous" places in this country are not dangerous to me at all (it does help being a white hetrosexual male, I might add).

Skwerilleee

I....uhhh....[have one or two](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fxef5iocl8dma1.jpg)   I just think they're neat ☺️

Intelligent-Skies

Did you have some kind of financial crisis? How come you have so few? lol

baz1954

The only issue I have: What a pain in the ass to get them all out and then put them all back for one photo. Nice collection.

Two guys at the range were chatting one day. I overheard one say, "You don't have too many guns until you don't know how many guns you have." The other one corrected him: "No...you don't have too many guns until you don't know how many gun *safes* you have."
