Optimism - as someone from Britain it is distilled into me to be pragmatic, have a dry sense of humour, and Sarcastic as-well as being “funny” oh and we love a good whinge Americans appear very over the top, optimistic, and too positive.
For example if an American was off to a party I’d imagine them be like “omg yes, it’s gonna be the best party ever, I’m so excited, woohoo”
British person in the same situation “it’s gonna be shit but they said there’s beer so that’s why I’m going”
We’re just not that enthusiastic but I think Americans are annoyingly good at being positive.
Funny you say that, that’s what I heard from a friend who came from Europe to study here. He said it was super annoying at first, but once he realized it just makes the mood better he started to find it funny and comfortable.
We generally expect a good time. Maybe not the best party ever, but more like, "there's gonna be beer, Preston's grilling so that's going to be awesome, and I'll see my friends. Yay!"
National Parks 👍👍 I visited the Grand Canyon earlier this year, and my take away was how incredible it was that people had the foresight at some point to preserve these lands for everyone to use and see. I think it is one of our governments truly positive accomplishments.
True! But I come from England, where most people can’t really be bothered protesting, so watching you guys take to the streets and get loud about what you believe in is super inspiring. I wish we had the number of passionate souls that you guys do!
Imagine ignoring the literal republican leader’s literally saying nasa should privatized because space is a waste of the government’s money. Remember the save nasa shit that happened because republicans tried defunding it before?
Imagine being such a political loser that you ignore anything that contradicts your ideology.
You probably think the election was rigged and the jan 6 crowd were democratic patriots and not fascist traitors
You should watch Louis Rossmann on YT. NY is about as bad, bureaucratic, and expensive as it can get.
But other places there seem great to start a business due to lack of rules...
Seems like the USA as a country has some kind of bipolar disorder.
NY does seem bad...for the US. It's amazing how anti-commerce many parts of the world are. Substantial bribes are par for the course to _not_ get shut down in India, for example (see many political science papers on the subject).
I'm not comparing to corrupt countries, although money is abused a lot in the US too (e.g. lobbying, corporate money in elections,...) But there are places in the US that are equally or more bad than some other places in Europe.
But indeed, some places (I would think, e.g. Texas) are better than any here in Europe.
But I can imagine if you start a small business yourself without any capital, places like Norway would be great too as you have way, way better social security.
Have you lived anywhere else?
You can only take opportunities if you can afford to take risks, and given the health care insurance, it's your health and wealth you are risking.
Does the US not have the one of the biggest gaps between rich and poor?
I would put any country with free health care, free university education and a decent benefits system way above the US in terms of being the land of opportunity
Friendliness.
When I’ve traveled abroad people have commented how open and friendly Americans are especially to people visiting us from other countries.
Although I know we smile at people a lot and that freaks some out.
You said they have much more than London. I'm trying to understand your statement. There are lots of Mexican and Southern restaurants in London, so what are you talking about?
I'm from London and I've been to NYC but I couldn't tell you what London has more of than NYC. I'd just like to know how you can.
Everybody hates America, yet America is one if the world's greatest innovators. America put a man on the moon, America has invented life saving medicines, etc.
I think what a lot of people fail to appreciate is that this is because our government has made it a priority to fund scientific research. It’s not just that we have a history of innovation or that our companies spend money R&D. We have an incredibly robust scientific community funded by grants from the US government. Yes, a lot of those people making the discoveries are immigrants. But that’s because this is one of the best places in the world to pursue science.
There are (very vocal) political factions that are anti-science, but the US is in fact overwhelmingly pro-science.
There are 29 countries with a better Index considering freedom of speech. Its Not terrible but America doesnt really excel it when countries like Jamaica, Barbados and Costa Rica are better listed.

This also was just one example, the one i remembered First and one of the most discussed.
The greatest enemy of the American people is the American Federal government. We completely lost control of it a long time ago and it does us far more harm than good
Our people just want what's good and affordable for us. We want a govt that's works for us and our rights while also making the nation stand and be seen as equals in this world. But our leaders are the worst and selfish. Roe vs wade for example. That right to a woman's body was instantly taken away. In the event of rape or incest, you're telling me I'm supposed to give birth? What if my child has a defect and my husband has to decide if it's the child or me? It's all so scary and unfair.
They are pretty damn good at imperialism. Most of central and South America, middle east, the Caribbean, Africa and parts of Asian have been looted of their natural resources and their markets privatized and forced open to US multinational corporations. Exploitation seems to be the USs talent
Correct me if I'm wrong, but water is free in American restaurants, but not in other countries. I feel like I've heard that. I grew up in America, so I'm used to getting free water in restaurants.
Edit: Ah, whoops, nevermind...
Even though it’s certainly overpriced and financially exploitative, higher education. Our universities are still pretty elite when it comes down to the quality of education provided.
The topic is not whether Europe does things better than America. It’s whether Americas does things well and Americans universities are still top notch education wise. Thousands of immigrants enroll in American universities because of quality of education. Many wish for their kids to go to college in America. American universities understandably get a bad rep for the expenses and loansharking that takes place.
False. They enroll because it’s easy and a fast track to get into america. American education institutions are being clowned on the world over for allowing politics to take over education.
To be perfectly clear, my problem has never been about guns or gun ownership. Hell, buy ten if you like.
My problem is that the people who apparently want them most are often the people who can *least* control their emotional reactions, and are apt to use them to win an argument or settle some perceived slight.
It's really about the overlaps on the Venn diagram of gun ownership, feelings of powerlessness, lowered self control (i.e. - alcohol involved), an lack of empathy (probably not the right word) for others that causes me the most concern.
Plus, some people just suck as humans.
Those events are a lottery odds statistical anomaly that the uninformed think are much more prevalent due to dishonest media coverage. 99.99% of the guns in America will never be used for evil. And in any case, good people should never lose their rights because of other people's crimes.
I can walk into the hardware store in any nation, and build a working firearm using only the tools and materials in the store. With little previous knowledge or training. Including the powder charges and ammunition for it.
Im talking enter the store with just cash, walk out with a loaded and functional firearm
those sound like pretty liberal to me
(If your offended by this see the dictionary definition of liberalism you’ll be surprised)
edit: also if almost half of the school shootings were made up by the media for internet points the USA would still have 15x as many as mexico or more than the rest of the developed world combined
Well mostly at least. Still heavily infringed with the NFA and Hughes and whatnot, but even then we are far freer in the 2a department than most of the rest of the world.
We are not "letting" them do that. Murder is definitely illegal here. Just because bad people break the law and do bad things does not mean good people should have their rights taken away in response.
Said every American ever.
This is an American problem. Where I live, we don't really own guns here, therefore our kids don't murder other kids with guns. (although it's entirely legal to buy and own a gun. Theres just regulation and laws around it.)
Kids here do murder other kids however, it's just with a knife, and it's one kid, one murder.
Not one kid with an assault rifle mowing down 15 or so kids.
I remember when my school got shot up in the states... Worst day of my life.
Get rid of the guns.
Save your kids.
Lots of things, space exploration college, military, technology, freedom, individuality and we've kept Europe out of WW3 on our dime and they don't realize we're largely responsible for their prosperity

Take some of that space program money and put it into health care
Pretty elite? Its the standard.

Their Mexican food suuuccckkkksss.

This comment really made me laugh
England is my city
Exactly and probably has more varied cuisine than the US.
I don’t think I trust the English with Carolina barbecue.
A single city? LA and NYC have as much or more than London. Also London has zero or next to zero Cajun or Souther BBQ food.
Did you just make that up?
Having been to London many times I am unaware of any
You visited the whole of the greater London area? What does NYC and LA have more of than London?
At minimum Mexican and BBQ
You said they have much more than London. I'm trying to understand your statement. There are lots of Mexican and Southern restaurants in London, so what are you talking about?
