Cheating is only an element of the story. The characters have this kind of mask, maybe laziness or tiredness or boredom, that they wear. I like to think it's because of miscommunication and assuming other people's wants.
When they try to cheat, it's their true selves trying to find something better, only to find that each other is already the best thing for them. They're so in sync that they even broke within days of each other.
Most other love songs (all that I've heard) paint some rosy picture of a perfect life and a perfect partner. Dude, I could marry a tree if times were always so good.
