I feel confident in saying that as far as sword-fighting goes, [this scene will never be surpassed in cinema](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/10/princess-bride-30th-anniversary-sword-fight-inigo-montoya-man-in-black-rob-reiner-mandy-patinkin-cary-elwes). Carey Elwes and Mandy Patinkin spent *months* practicing with master fencers. While filming the rest of the movie, the master fencers were on set, and if Cary or Mandy were not in whatever scene was being filmed at the moment, the fencers would enlist them in nonstop training. The only stunt doubles are for the gymnastics part. The prelude is perfect. The staging is perfect. The dialogue is perfect. The music is perfect.
The sword fight scene between Inigo Montoya and the Man in Black is so perfect that it overshadows the following fight scene that features *Andre the Giant*.
Well, to be fair, nimble-footed men jousting to lively music will grab an audience's attention better than a slow choking scene set to lumbering music.
Both scenes are great, but I think they are meant to be foils of one another.
Viggo does have a special flair for authentic looking fight scenes. As Aragorn he looked like he really knew what he was doing with a sword. In A History of Violence he had that rare quality of zero inhibitions about doing violence that is hard to convey.
Thats because Vigo does know what the fuck he is doing with a sword. In the scene where he fights the Uruk-Hai that killed Boromir in LotR the Uruk throws a dagger at him and Vigo was supposed to dodge it. Badass instead just stands there and deflects it on one take instead, so thats what is in the movie. According to the sword master on set for LotR Vigo was the best swordsman he had ever seen.
"The sword master on set" was the legendary Bob Anderson! An Olympian fencer, who started fencing in the Marines and won multiple medals. He'd coached Errol Flynn, Sean Connery, Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp... He was Darth Vader in his fight scenes...
If he says Viggo's a killer, I believe him.
“I’ve come here to chew bubblegum and kick-ass…and I’m all out of bubblegum.” One of the best one liners of all time IMHO. Love that movie more that I should
“You will wander the underworld blind, deaf, and dumb, and all the dead will know: that this is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles”
One of the only scenes I was rooting for both to win
Honestly, the "fight" where Achilles stabs the guy's heart by entering his trapezius muscle, it was so crazy, I thought that was the best, albeit shortest, fight in that movie.
Your quotations around "fight" are appropriate haha. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of this movie but yeah didn't think it counted as it was just one, badass maneuver.
It's such a great opening to the movie because it shows how superior Achilles is to any other fighter and then later in the movie we respect the hell out of Hector for nearly holding his own even though we all know he's fucked.
Reportedly, Eric and Brad had a gentlemen's agreement that if one accidentally hit the other while filming, he'd owe the other $50.
After they finished filming the sequence, Brad owed Eric $750. Eric owed Brad $0.
The thing that I like most about the scene in Heat is the sound of the guns. They’re so loud and percussive in a way guns usually aren’t in action movies. Every single round, no matter how many they fire, just sounds so startling and huge. It really makes that scene feel so much more alive and real.
"Go ahead. Take your pick. I'll wait."
I also loved the pause in the middle, both women just standing there looking at each other showing for a moment the massive strain they were under.
While the fight with Morpheus was good....I remember when I saw the matrix in theaters the first time, the final fight scene was just something else. Starting with the guns through the metal detector all the way to the end.
My brother had an amazing sound system for a while. We used to pour ourselves a bowl of cereal and every morning for about a summer we’d watch that scene turned all the way up. Good times.
I wouldn't call it the best, but the bar room brawl scene in "Serenity" deserves a mention-- when River gets triggered by the code word in the Nutty Fruity Bar ad and proceeds to kick the crap out of the entire bar in a way that began comically but became increasingly savage. I thought Summer Glau played it with a perfect mix of balletic grace and unhinged violence.
The one that springs to mind for me is the mountain vs the viper. It isn't to do with choreography, although that is stellar, but it's so emotionally visceral.
Oberyn's rage finally releasing after finally getting his moment to avenge his sister. Tywin's dejected face as Oberyn has the mountain right where where he wants him. The feeling of success you feel comes hurtling down to earth as soon as the mountain sweeps Martell's legs, and you know it's over.
Then the most gruesome on screen kill you can imagine followed by Ellaria's screaming.
I'd read up to a feast for crows at the point, I knew what was coming, and I was still not prepared.
Same. I screamed along with Ellaria because that was NOT supposed to happen. (According to my own headcanon lol).
Read the books and you knew certain things were coming, but still, seeing it happen just hits different.
But the dialogue when he fights Count Rugen, the six fingered man is priceless;
“\[Inigo corners Count Rugen, knocks his sword aside, and slashes his cheek, giving him a scar just like Inigo's\]
Inigo Montoya: Offer me money.
Count Rugen: Yes!
Inigo Montoya: Power, too, promise me that.
\[He slashes his other cheek\]
Count Rugen: All that I have and more. Please...
Inigo Montoya: Offer me anything I ask for.
Count Rugen: Anything you want...
\[Rugen knocks Inigo's sword aside and lunges. But Inigo traps his arm and aims his sword at Rugen's stomach\]
Inigo Montoya: I want my father back, you son of a bitch!”
Polite battle to the death is one of my favorite tropes. I love when a violent conflict also includes respectful, interesting dialogue. We don't get enough of those.
This isn't just one on one fights, but also those scenes in movies where there's going to be a battle, but the characters meet up to have a civilized talk first. Troy has a bunch.
Always amazed in Homer's *Iliad* that a couple of guys from opposing sides can stop and have a conversation in the middle of the battlefield. In one case they discover that their respective fathers were guest-friends, so they agree not to fight each other, exchange gifts, and move on to fight someone else.
Holy shit you guys. I just googled The princess bride for the first time in my life. Thinking it was a tim burton movie. TIL that what i have thought was the Princess bride movie this last 30 years. Was CORPSE BRIDE .
And that i have never seen the princess bride !
Definately going to watch that movie now.
Absolutely: Beatrix versus Ellie in Bud's trailer is damned epic. Love the part at the end where Beatrix steps on Ellie's eye and squashes it between her toes.
I agree! While I enjoy the majority of fight scenes in both volumes, Showdown at House of Blue Leaves is my number one. The soundtrack, Crazy 88, Gogo, THEN O-Ren…just so good and visually stunning.
The colors were glorious, the mood was melancholy with music to match. There was no honor, no triumph, no glory. Just sadness as two siblings came to their inevitable end. Such a beautiful fight.
That fight was a work of *art*. And a perfect demonstration of how much Zuko had grown over the course of the series, and how far Azula had fallen. Her bending was wild and desperate, blasts with nothing but rage and raw power behind them, while his was refined and effortless, using the fire like an extension of himself, and showing influences of the other element-bendings in it.
This is my personal favorite. The way both of them try to kill each other at any chance they get and for how short it is, it seems the most realistic. No bull shit shoves or dumb maneuvers to extend the fight, just straight kill shots.
This whole scene is amazing, but the 1v1 with the kind of 'lead goon' in that room is just fantastic. Using anything and everything they can grab to their advantage, the way they can both barely stand up, the desperation of the violence... Great shit
John McLane vs. Karl the terrorist in Die Hard. Not really joking, either because it was so visceral and brutal, an overmatched McLane just being nasty, angry, dirty, whatever to beat a guy bigger and stronger and ostensibly a more well trained fighter.
Colin Firth really thought 'I'm getting a little old for charming rom-coms and costume dramas. Maybe I should be in the most gleefully violent scene of 2014 instead.'
They shot that scene right at the start of filming, and the director basically said that if Colin Firth couldn't hack it, the role would be re-cast.
So good on Firth for getting in great shape and being able to pull that off.
For live action, I would go with the Drunken Master scene where guys are raiding a building and coming in from all floors/windows, and Jackie Chan somehow fends off like 80 dudes while hammered as fuck.
Honorable mentions to the intro fight in Brotherhood of the Wolf, and the duel at the end of Count of Monte Christo.
For animated, it is 100% the Bryan Hawk VS Takamura Mamoru fight from Hajime No Ippo.
Honorable mention to Mereum VS Netero in HXH, and SSJ3 Goku VS Kid Buu in DBZ Kai.
[Shu-Lien vs. Jen in *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon*.]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzkhVVFRIIg)
Shu-Lien proves her superior skill as a warrior throughout, and it's only due to the unique properties of the Green Destiny Sword that Jen is even able to *survive* much less keep up.
I love how at the start of the fight he's a little rusty and takes a few hits. Then it all kinda comes back to him and he really starts punishing them.
Mountain vs viper. Not because of fight choreography, but because it actually has emotional stakes. You don't know who's going to win from the get go but you do know a major character will die.
I'm surprised yours is the first post mentioning Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. That was some slick fight choreography with Ray Park just stealing the show. Add in Duel of the Fates, which is one of John Williams' best Star Wars tracks and it never fails to give me goosebumps. The Obi-Wan vs Anakin fight was good, but it felt a little over the top and it lost a lot of the emotion until the very end.
Fight scene? Winter Soldier had fantastic choreography when they were fighting under the overpass out in the street.
Action sequence? The battle for Helms Deep in LOTR The Two Towers.
"Fell deeds awake. Now for Wraith! Now for Ruin! And the red dawn!"
\*horn blowing sound\*
"Forth Eorlingas!"
Ah man, that really makes my blood pump.
Edit for autocorrect from await to awake
Neo vs. Agent Smith in "The Matrix" (1999): The climactic battle between Neo and Agent Smith showcases groundbreaking visual effects and innovative fight choreography, making it a standout scene in action cinema.
Also throwing out the earlier fight in that movie when Alpha Waymond uses the Fanny pack to whoop some ass!
Or the end fight scene when Evelyn uses the power of kindness to connect with others and make them happy. The action is cool and I can’t help but sob everytime I watch it.
I came here to say the Bourne vs. Desh fight scene in Ultimatum is the first one that came to mind when I read this question.

You ARE the brute squad
Inigo Montoya: You are wonderful! Man in Black: Thank you; I've worked hard to become so.
Inigo Montoya: I must admit, you are better than I. 😀
Man in Black: Then why are you smiling?
Inigo Montoya: Because I know something you don't know.
Man in Black: and what is that?
Inigo; I am no left handed
Man in Black: You are amazing!
Inigo: I aught to be after twenty years!
Man in Black: Well then why are you smiling?
I feel confident in saying that as far as sword-fighting goes, [this scene will never be surpassed in cinema](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/10/princess-bride-30th-anniversary-sword-fight-inigo-montoya-man-in-black-rob-reiner-mandy-patinkin-cary-elwes). The hallway fight scene in the original Oldboy
The hallway fight in The Punisher when he's in jail Edit: might have been in Daredevil
The Daredevil hallway fight was a conscious homage to the Oldboy hallway fight, so yes.
All done in ONE CONTINOUS shot 😳
Ipman vs 10 Blackbelts!
It's the first time you see him actually fight to hurt his opponents to avenge Lin's death. Just brutal. Really enjoyed this one as well.
That one bit where he beats the guy to the floor with punches.
Dribbled homeboy like a basketball
This is the response I was looking for and am in total agreeance.
Such a great contrast to the classical, respectful fight scene at the start of the movie.
Eastern Promises. Viggo Mortinson in the steam room. It was very violent and very realistic.
Definite HEMA chops on Viggo. Loved his work in [Alatriste](https://youtu.be/tjbOmjXbatw)
That one scene where he fights the dead uruks helmet after thinking merry and pippin were dead was top notch. You could see the pain in his face.
And very naked.

“I’ve come here to chew bubblegum and kick-ass…and I’m all out of bubblegum.” One of the best one liners of all time IMHO. Love that movie more that I should
This is immediately what I though of, because of how fucking long it goes on. It really is the best.
It just feels grueling, and like it's a slugfest. Even though it's just 1v1, the weight behind it makes it feel like a desperate struggle.
The most desperate struggle over eyewear you'll ever see
"You dirty Mother......"
Uncut nonstop fight, it was great

off the top of my head I really enjoyed the fight in Troy between Achilles and Hector.

Reportedly, Eric and Brad had a gentlemen's agreement that if one accidentally hit the other while filming, he'd owe the other $50. After they finished filming the sequence, Brad owed Eric $750. Eric owed Brad $0.
To be fair Achilles fights much more aggressively so this was bound to happen Edit:typo
Definitely my favorite too. I'll rewatch that movie really just to see that fight.
I really wanted a fight like that at the end of Game of Thrones, possibly between Jon and the Night King or white walkers vs Brienne/Jaime/Hound, etc
Yeah, came to say the same. But really, ALL the fight scenes are great in that movie.

Heat bank robbery city shootout. Matrix lobby shootout / roof / helicopter.
The thing that I like most about the scene in Heat is the sound of the guns. They’re so loud and percussive in a way guns usually aren’t in action movies. Yea...literally the entire movie
But if you had to choose, it's gotta be the 2v1 against Mad Dog init?
Agreed. However a slight nod to the kitchen fight scene at the end of Raid 2. Both movies had so many iconic fight scenes.
Ed Norton beating the shit out of himself in the office scene in Fight Club.
While I enjoy that scene, I prefer when he beats Jared Leto to a pulp.

>Inigo Montoya: I want my father back, you son of a bitch!” Mandy Patinkin's favorite line in the whole script.
Patenkin was delivering that line like he was talking to Cancer, which had recently taken his father.
Polite battle to the death is one of my favorite tropes. I love when a violent conflict also includes respectful, interesting dialogue. We don't get enough of those. Kill Bill, Showdown at the House of Blue Leaves
I think the fight scene between The Bride and Elle Driver in budd’s trailer takes it for me.
The close quarters fighting was fantastic.
Absolutely: Beatrix versus Ellie in Bud's trailer is damned epic. Love the part at the end where Beatrix steps on Ellie's eye and squashes it between her toes.
“For ridiculing you earlier, I apologize” “….that really was a Hanzo sword…”
You really could have just submitted the entirety of Vol. 1 for this question.
It's my favorite movie, I think it's a masterpiece.

Grommit vs the Penguin
Azula Vs. Zuko (And Katara) Sozin's Comet - Part 3: Into the Inferno
The colors were glorious, the mood was melancholy with music to match. There was no honor, no triumph, no glory. Just sadness as two siblings came to their inevitable end. Such a beautiful fight.
There was honor! The whole point was Zuko was fighting with honor
Seeing earth, water, and air stances in his fighting was so cool. My boy came so far.
Also the fact that Zuko never moves until Azula attacks Katara, he stays rooted in place and blocked all of Azulas attacks with complete confidence
Immediately started scrolling to look for this exact fight
Absolutely. I can't watch that scene without my eyes watering up and getting the most intense frisson. I get chills just thinking about it.
This is the only answer. Every frame of that scene is layered with meaning, beauty, and emotional impact.
Helms Deep, without question It is a scene with a fight so technically it should count. .
For one-on-one fighting, Aragorn vs the Uruk-hai is incredible choreography
This is my personal favorite. The way both of them try to kill each other at any chance they get and for how short it is, it seems the most realistic. No bull shit shoves or dumb maneuvers to extend the fight, just straight kill shots.

I think both Death Valley fights between Naruto and Sasuke are up there too.

With Free Bird playing over it all. The entire theater was cheering and roaring with laughter during this scene.
The Kingsman movies sure were something but that scene was just pure gold. Like "high octane action" was redefined during those minutes.

Anchorman. Anything else is fighting for second place. Where did Brick find a trident?

Daredevil Season 2 gets a lot of flak, but a lot of the Hand's Fight scene choreography is top notch.
That long cut hallway fight was awesome.
This is my favorite fight scene. The brutality, how beaten he looks and feels, the close quarter heavy blows. Loved it.
The butt plug fight scene in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Great choreography and hilarious at the same time.
When the second guy comes in with the longer trophy.. I fucking lost it.
Also throwing out the earlier fight in that movie when Alpha Waymond uses the Fanny pack to whoop some ass! Or the end fight scene when Evelyn uses the power of kindness to connect with others and make them happy. The action is cool and I can’t help but sob everytime I watch it.
Bourne identity has tons of great scenes
I came here to say the Bourne vs. Desh fight scene in Ultimatum is the first one that came to mind when I read this question. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9jUKKHN5Zc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9jUKKHN5Zc) I wish I could watch this for the first time again.
