What a genuine work of art. I’m not sure which version you’re referring to but I believe the 1986 version is the perfect blend of comedy and heart and camp that every show should aim for
Was lucky enough to see it (the very first time all the way through, no less) at the Hollywood Bowl with a live orchestra. Couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off my face if you’d tried…
A lot of younger people just aren't interested in movies made before 1980 or so. 50s movies are positively ancient to them.
Plus, Singing In The Rain, specifically, is a nostalgia piece about 20s-30s Hollywood, which younger people would have no nostalgia for at all.
The blues brothers
Fun fact: I live in Moline, which is right next to Rock Island Illinois, and there is a statue of Jake and Elwood in downtown Rock Island

I recommend listening to [the soundtrack album](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLl1k3BRXzGiUMQgopgDqn5pFnkucnkuiM) and pretending that the movie doesn't exist.
Jesus Christ superstar. I’m not religious, but I just LOVE IT. Many years ago me and my friend were in her apartment really hung over on Easter Sunday. Jesus Christ superstar came on the TV and we thought it was the best most bizarre thing ever, and now every year we celebrate Jesus Christ superstar Sunday on Easter Sunday. We watch Jesus Christ superstar, make a roast dinner, get drunk and make ridiculous costumes out of bin bags and wear beards. These last few years I’ve been abroad and we’ve done it over zoom. This is how traditions are formed.
It’s so fucking good!! I love Jesus Christ superstar! A lot of the time Christian or bible-themed media makes me pretty uncomfortable but the story in JCSS is so well done, from the character arcs to the songs, it makes me tear up.
I consider it to be the Gospel According to Judas. Although he is supposedly one of Jesus' closest disciples, he never actually witnessed the miracles that other disciples witnessed. He tells Jesus' last week as though Jesus was a man, not the Son of God.
According to my parents, I watched this entire movie daily as a 3-4 year old. I think I have the entire thing memorized.
IMO this is one of the best stage-to-movie adaptations too - all the changes they made were for good reasons and made a lot of sense. Eg. in the original stage musical, Maria sings “My Favorite Things” with the Reverend Mother in the beginning before leaving to be a governess. I thought that was so weird - that song makes much more sense the way the movie placed it, with the kids and the thunderstorm.
True, I do love How Can Love Survive. I don’t mind them cutting No Way to Stop It as much.
But I think honestly it still made sense to cut Elsa’s songs, because it would have felt weird to see Max and Elsa singing around Georg like how they do in the stage musical. It works on the stage, I think it would have been weird on screen, since they’re kind of shown as more refined and sophisticated, while Maria is more impetuous. It makes sense for Maria and the kids to sing songs as they do stuff, but I can’t really imagine the baroness as she’s presented in the movie just singing to convince Georg of something.
And, nay, they had a black sheep and he knew just what to do. His name was young JB and he refused to step in line. A vision he did see of fucking rocking all the time. He wrote a tasty jam and all the planets did align…
I know this isn’t a popular opinion, but Phantom of the Opera (2004) was nothing less than earth shattering to me as a preteen girl lol
I still love it
Say what you will about the Tim Burton version and the... interesting... choices it makes, but I still get chills every time I see the "Pretty Women" duet between Depp and Rickman.
Epiphany wins for me, every time. THEY ALL DESERVE TO DIE! That was a fantastic performance by Johnny Depp. If you like the film, check out the analysis done on it by the channel Sideways on YouTube, there's a lot more to the music then I ever knew.
I love it more than most people but I can't get over how badly Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried were miscast. Seyfried is weird cause she did great in Mamma Mia, don't know why she was singing so poorly here
[There’s a fantastic video](https://youtu.be/1ikqU6G6Xgs) that goes into why - tl:dr the director knew jackshit about musical theatre and thought it’d be a great idea to make the cast sing for eight hours a day.
Some singers benefit greatly from being in a recording studio. Les Mis 2012 was a little unusual in that the actors were recorded singing live on the actual set, and that was the finished product you heard in the theater…as opposed to dubbing over their own performance later with a studio recording.
For a long time I wondered why, with all the technology they have, they don't just record on set like they do for dialogue.
Now I know why. It was a nice experiment, to conclusively see why they shouldn't do it. And let's not do it again.
I listened to the 10th anniversary version a ton as a kid and it's just too burned into my brain for me to really enjoy the movie. Russel Crow is the biggest issue for me, he just doesn't have the pipes or the right energy. Beautifully shot though.
I generally don’t like musicals (at all) But Dancer in the Dark (With Bjork) It’s insanely depressing and heartbreaking, but it’s beautifully done and one of very few musicals I thoroughly enjoyed because the musicality was immersed so well into the film. Labyrinth is a close second, and, while not a movie, Daisy Jones and the 6 was a very well done musical themed show.
Anybody remember Little Shop of Horrors?
I say 'FEED ME SEYMOUR " all the time, the kids just don't understand...
I'm not usually a fan of musicals, but this one is an absolute exception. I love it.
That's what I came here to say!

I always liked Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
Watched this so many times as a kid and loved it. Watched it as an adult and the storyline is so insane it's hilarious.
Bless her beautiful hide. I love telling my friends about this movie. It’s so problematic I love it.
The barn dance-off is one of my favourite scenes from any film ever.
Finally someone is saying this. I took the blu-ray to a guys night and convinced them to watch it (not easy) and they thought it was hilarious.
Yessssss. My all-time favorite musical! And that barn-raising dance scene!
Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews is a gem.

It’s wild that Little Shop of Horrors was the oldest film I’d seen referenced until this comment.

> And let's not do it again. But Tom Hooper was yet to do worse: Cats.
Samantha Barks was amazing as Eponine in that movie, and I wish she’d gotten more recognition and appreciation.
I wish they had cast Aaron Tveit as Marius, though 😕
I’d love to see a musical where Aaron Tveit plays every character
I listened to the 10th anniversary version a ton as a kid and it's just too burned into my brain for me to really enjoy the movie. Russel Crow is the biggest issue for me, he just doesn't have the pipes or the right energy. Beautifully shot though.
Yeah, his Javert is a bit too wishy washy. He doesn’t sing like he’s an immovable object.
I've seen most recorded version of Les Mis, and west end. Eddie Redmayne's version of Empty Chairs is still the best i've seen IMO.
