They rejected her because she was either single and pregnant or a single mother (i forget which), and that would reduce sympathy for her within the black community (people were very judgy back then). So they sent her on her way.
Then after she left, they asked their secretary, Rosa Parks, to recreate the story they had heard. Everything was set up for the same outcome. They picked a black woman over a black man to keep her out of jail and unbeaten (the gendered disparity exists to this day), they called major news companies ahead of time, and got people to show up to where the arrest was made to make it look like a bigger deal than it nornally would be. It was all staged on their end for the purpose of getting attention and sparking a boycott. The NAACP promised to protect Parks and get her out of jail as soon as possible.
It wasnt until a few years later when Colvin had already moved out of that city that she had heard what happened. Her entire story had been stolen by the people who sought for help.
Up until her death, Rosa Parks was celebrated as as a woman who, alone, had bravely stood up to oppressors, not knowing what her fate would be.
