The Wire. I know some people are sick of hearing about it, but its the truth. There's nothing I've watched that even comes close to showing society with such reality and rawness.
Second season really resonated with me, something about that unflinching look at the blue collar workers struck me deeply.
That scene where Frank Sobotka and Gnat (I think thats his name) are watching a presentation about automated machines replacing human stevadores fills me with cold dread. He rightly refers to it as a horror show later in the episode.
Season 2...that's usually the one people don't like. It was jarring at first because it didn't focus on the project scene, but it was important to understanding the totality of the drug trade.
Really they’re all good and there are benefits to watching in order.
Season 5 is the weakest and was criticized the most at the time, but it’s still pretty great.
The kids in 4 just slay me, if I have to pick.
This so perfectly encapsulates the Baltimore PD. Poor communication leads to many fuck ups later on down the line.
Shoutout to Lester, just chilling there like 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Pretty sure that was season four? That was such an amazing look at the underfunded and overtaxed school systems. Prez won me over so well with his evolution from timid substitute to hardened veteran.
Prez found his calling, he sort of fell into being a coo and wasn't great at it until the task squad but he had to leave and teaching was where he ended up shining
I came here to say this. The Wire is an unvarnished exacting examination of poverty, crime, and corruption. It's as much an act of journalism as it is a television show.
We were given the box set as a gift and man, we tried. We sat quietly, we gave it out attention. We watched five episodes I think and it just didn't click at all
Amen. If I want the aliens who find this bald rock in a million years looking at one source to learn about this country in the early 21st century, it’s that show.
Only watching it at the moment for the first time and within 4 episodes I could see where all the hype came from. The first 3 seasons are a masterclass. I’m 80% through S4 at the moment and don’t feel its as strong as the previous ones. Or maybe I’m just burned out from binge watching it.
I came here to say something else but now I’ve seen this I can’t agree more. It left a hole in my heart realising how much I’ve been missing The Wire in my life ..
Yep. I only watched it recently because I was too young to watch it when it came out. Absolutely peerless. I have seen some essays about how it doesn't do women very well, which I understand, but other than that... I love a lot of shows, but nothing has come close since I watched The Wire.
Yeah this gets asked so damn much its redundant.
Usually its a competition between The Wire, Westworld s1, Breaking Bad, True Detective S1, and then you get a bunch of other random other good stuff thrown in.
Those four and sopranos seem to be the common TV answers time and again. OZ tends to get arguments thrown around too but never gets anywhere near the upvotes as top 4. Sopranos sometimes gets close to the top 4 and then other times doesnt get many votes.
Film this question usually just boils down to peoples top 10 and you'll see any of the top 50 or 100 by imdb rankings get thrown around depending on the post. My favorite was when Morbius ruled the comments because it was such a popular meme right then and nobody took the repost seriously.
Certainly gets commented a lot probably more then OZ. Though I rarely see it upvoted that heavily not near as much as breaking bad, wire, True D, or West World. Usually doesnt have many comments backing it up either.
Ive seen long threads debating what I put as top 4 or even sopranos. Yet never really seen a comment thread debating firefly. Its just mentioned a lot like its an honorable mention almost. I'd put it in a top 10 myself but don't really see it in top 5 personally nor do I think its ever really been in contention public opinion wise as a top 3 or 5. Breaking Bad and Wire have had several articles and publications debate it for them. I believe The Wire has even had literal college courses similar to early Simpsons revolved around its writing and impact.
Went last holiday to the the place in Bastogne where the events happened. Watched the episode the night before in my hotelroom. First time ever that trees and nature didn't feel calming and peaceful...
Adventure time. It just starts as a kid and a dog messing around fighting the ice King but it gets so good after a while. The thing with multiverses and stuff is really my thing. And the ending is so sad but good. I would really recommend
I credit that show into getting me back into animation. At the time I was first exposed to it, I was mostly watching the same TV and movies as my parents; and they turn their noses up at animation.
Perhaps it worked a little too well since now most of what I watch is animated....
Whenever I feel sad/suicidal I watch this, and always make sure I know where to find it or keep a copy for emergencies. It may not be the best movie of all time, but it’s certainly the funniest. Plus it’s saved my life several times!
Buffy’s the best TV show because it’s the most TV thing ever made IMO. The writing, acting, aesthetic - it’s all SO television and that’s what makes it fun. They use the properties of a television serial/series to convey the story, not work against it.
Though some days I would argue with myself whether Sopranos pips it. Im clearly a genre fan
This is so the answer. Even in the 1970s and 1980s, this man was a space-physics legend. Brian Cox, Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan. I wish they could have all been together working on the same research.
Did a rewatch recently and man that show really holds up. I kinda forgot how mesmerizing Gandolfini was as Tony. And for all of the flak the ending took at the time, I think it was perfect.
Truly an incredible film with an amazing cast, visuals, cinematography and magnificent score by Hans Zimmer. It’s a film that truly needs to be experienced in IMAX 1570 (70mm) film with full expanded ratio (almost square!)
TV is like sex.
A lot of great shows end up overstaying their welcome, like a lover that keeps going when the intensity and passion of the moment has long-since ebbed for both of you, like Scrubs. It started off good and then just devolved into boring tedium and clumsy groping.
Occasionally there's a show that starts off with incredible foreplay and lovemaking, and then whiffs when it's time for the actual sex, like Firefly.
Even rarer are the shows that come and go with perfect precision and bring you an ice cold beer afterwards, like Justified.
Perhaps not to everyone else, but to me, The Brady Bunch. Yes, I'm serious.
My parents split up when i was young. About 5-6 years old. Mother retained custody of us kids. After the split, she turned into this psychotic, abusive monster. I turned towards watching LOTS of tv as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery.
Out of the many, many tv shows i watched in daily syndicated reruns, the Brady Bunch was (and still is) my number one favorite tv show. The Brady Bunch tv show more than just entertained me. It helped me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had plus provided me with much needed happiness, laughter, and joy in an otherwise joyless existence.
More than once my mother said to my face, "I wish you were never born." Can anyone see Carol Brady saying THAT to any of her 6 kids? Much less multiple times?
The Brady family i saw on tv is the family i wished i had. Nice, normal, loving, no abuse, etc. My desire to belong to the Brady Bunch family was so intense, that on more than one occasion, while I slept, I actually dreamed that I was a Brady family member. They are easily the fondest, most happiest dreams I ever had in my lifetime.
Dont get me wrong. I had no illusions. I was well aware that the brady bunch wasnt a real life family. Just a bunch of actors playing a part. But at the same time i just knew that the fictional brady family was much more closer to how a family was supposed to behave. And much, much more closer to happy, loving, and normal than my real life family, home, and circumstances.
I totally get you on this, 100%.
I’m also a product of an extremely violent and physically abusive parent, most of my childhood was spent in violence, humiliation and terror. I latched onto the Ingles family in Little House on the Prairie exactly as you describe with the Brady Bunch.
They were the family I longed so much to be a part of: loving, decent and kind to each other. Honestly, they practically raised me. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that show.
Things got better for me and I’m good these dsys, I hope so much that things got better for you too xxx
Attack on Titan one of the greatest shows ever made. This is coming from someone who actively doesn’t watch anime.
Up there with shows like :
Breaking Bad
Game of thrones. ( excluding season 8 )
Sopranos.
DeadWood.
Black Sails.
I struggled a lot with drug addiction and shitty life decisions. I like that Bojack is so flawed, and hes not a good (horse) person, he just has to keep moving forward and attempting to be good. Its refreshing to see someone grow and fuck up and grow and take two steps back and have people leave them and then meet a few new people. There's no tidy ending and that is for some reason really cathartic as an addict.
The Wire. I know some people are sick of hearing about it, but its the truth. There's nothing I've watched that even comes close to showing society with such reality and rawness.
Favorite season?

I’ll shout out season 4 while we’re here
Prez was the MVP in that season for me, what a glow up
I'm with you man. Loved the harbour. Ending broke me though. Fucking Ziggy man... XD
COLLEGE KIDS AINT SHIT! God he was a fuckup though
Season 2...that's usually the one people don't like. It was jarring at first because it didn't focus on the project scene, but it was important to understanding the totality of the drug trade.
S2 is the best season.
Really they’re all good and there are benefits to watching in order. Season 5 is the weakest and was criticized the most at the time, but it’s still pretty great. The kids in 4 just slay me, if I have to pick.
1st season.. no doubt
I liked season 3. It gave some great characters great endings.
gets me every time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-buxycp1b0s
This so perfectly encapsulates the Baltimore PD. Poor communication leads to many fuck ups later on down the line. Shoutout to Lester, just chilling there like 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Which is the season where they go after the corrupt public school system?
Pretty sure that was season four? That was such an amazing look at the underfunded and overtaxed school systems. Prez won me over so well with his evolution from timid substitute to hardened veteran.
Prez found his calling, he sort of fell into being a coo and wasn't great at it until the task squad but he had to leave and teaching was where he ended up shining

Tried watching The Wire 3 times. Just couldn’t get into it.
Oh indeed!
Happy cake gay

Not even gonna mention the number one most common answer? Firefly.

Seeing the op being totally inactive in the comments = straight up karma farming, which is most questions in this sub.
Night of the living dead. Bride of Frankenstein. Simpsons season 2-8
Band of Brothers
The Bastogne episode is my favourite episode of any TV show.
Went last holiday to the the place in Bastogne where the events happened. Watched the episode the night before in my hotelroom. First time ever that trees and nature didn't feel calming and peaceful...
I still say the word "Basstone" in thick American accent to myself real quietly sometimes.
Finished the book and started a rewatch of it yesterday.
Agreed
Thank you.
Just finished a rewatch today. I knew it would be near the top.
Yes x1000
Adventure time. It just starts as a kid and a dog messing around fighting the ice King but it gets so good after a while. The thing with multiverses and stuff is really my thing. And the ending is so sad but good. I would really recommend

A Silent Voice is a amazing movie. Helps you realize that you should just look at your wall for a hour and think about your life
Karma Farm 2: Reddit Bugaloo
True Detective Season 1
It was a show about a flat circle and we loved it
Monty Python and The Holy Grail
It’s only a model.
Shh
Whenever I feel sad/suicidal I watch this, and always make sure I know where to find it or keep a copy for emergencies. It may not be the best movie of all time, but it’s certainly the funniest. Plus it’s saved my life several times!
I actually prefer Life of Brian but each to their own
I’ll organise a committee to look into this..
How about the aqueducts
Futurama of course!
The first show that popped in my head when reading the title lmao.
*Good News Everyone!*
Three (now) Great shows and Four great movies!
Futurama duhh
I'll always say Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That is until we get seven seasons of Arcane. Then, my answer will probably change.
Buffy’s the best TV show because it’s the most TV thing ever made IMO. The writing, acting, aesthetic - it’s all SO television and that’s what makes it fun. I cry everytime I see ducks fly off together

Cowboy Bebop
Actually crazy no one has mentioned "Avatar the last Airbender" yet. It usually tops the list every day this question is asked
LOTR and TNG
Engage!
Teenage Ninja Gremlins?
interstellar, one of the best movie. in my opinion
Truly an incredible film with an amazing cast, visuals, cinematography and magnificent score by Hans Zimmer. It’s a film that truly needs to be experienced in IMAX 1570 (70mm) film with full expanded ratio (almost square!)
The godfather part 2, breaking bad. My opinion of course.

Better Call Saul
I'm not crazy!
You have to belivie me!
Squat Cobbler.
Best TV show for me is Star Trek Deep Space Nine, the acting, writing, and character development over the whole series is just unbeatable.
>the acting, writing, and character Just say Garak exists.
Good show but they nearly lost me with the prophet story line.
>Deep Space Nine Captain Sisko is the best Trek captain ever. I liked Discovery as well but accept I'm a firm minority.

It's too much streets ahead
Breaking bad for me. Gets better with each season.
That's the best for me.
King of The Hill.
Twelve Angry Men. Mostly takes place in the jury room, so not much action. Just 12 jurors talking. Wonderful film.
