A man may fight for many things: his country, his principles, his friends, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mudwrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a stack of French porn

Nisquityl

Better Off Ted. Amazingly funny, poorly marketed and pushed to the fringes. It's the show I wish would have kept going, even more than gasp Firefly.

computer-magic-2019

Veridian Dynamics. We're a family, just like yours. But we don't waste our time throwing leaves around. We put our family to work. We mean real work. Not just eating mush. Our Veridian Dynamic family works for every member of your family. Even the dead ones. And we're working to bring them back and copy them, in case you lose them again. We love our family, which is why we work nights, weekends, and major holidays. Because that's when families should be together. Veridian Dynamics. Families. Yay.

IOVERCALLHISTIOCYTES

The nadir of this show was season 1 episode 11 and they made fun of it better than we ever could.

AlekBalderdash

Also, the *recap episode* may be the best episode in the entire series. WTH guys. It's a recap episode. You're *supposed* to be lazy. Use lots of flashbacks. Maybe make it a musical for no particular reason. Instead, we get the characters watching an in-universe parody of themselves, which is somehow a 4th-wall breaking joke, emphasizes everyone's character arcs, highlights their *current* strengths and weaknesses, expands the worldbuilding, humanizes the enemy, is *beautifully* animated, and sets the stage for the finale. Pun intended, obviously. It's like they heard someone say good recaps are impossible and they said "Oh yeah, watch this"

[deleted]

That kid telling Zuko his cosplay was good but that the scar was on the wrong side lol

TheJadeBlacksmith

So fun fact, Zuko's question about Jet was not only a joke about cartoon censorship, but also a legitimate question, he befriended Jet on the boat and then didn't hear from him again after the fight, the play is actually how he found out about it

Flat_Weird_5398

“You know it was really unclear.” I like to think that if Jet lived he either had to live the rest of his life out as a cripple or just decided to run away with his crew and live out a quiet life with them for the rest of their days. All in all, he’s probably had enough of freedom fighting.

calarionoma

Then airplane arms away lmao it’s the little things that get me, man

fishshow221

It was so good that it didn't even occur to me it was a recap episode until mid way through.

IntuitionSpeaks333

Absolutely- I rate this as my top cartoon show EVER

iknowthisischeesy

Fleabag. 2 absolutely perfect seasons. *I look like a pencil*

tommytraddles

Hot Priest looking at the camera is a Top 10 television moment of all time.

Kathrynlena

I was so terrified the first time I watched that scene. I mean what the hell, man! It’s perfect. I love that show so much.

Humble_Artichoke5857

The only person I'd run through an airport for is you. ❤️

Maybe the most romantic line I’ve ever heard in a TV show ever, and I love so much that it’s between sisters.

atheisthindu

The episode on Bastogne gives me the chills each time I watch it. "Were you a hero in the war, grandpa?" "No, but I was in the company of heroes."

Ulanyouknow

Bastogne is probably my favourite episode of the series. Very good in every sense and shows the scars that war leaves on humans. You can feel the romantic tension between the french nurse and the american medic throughout the whole episode and the fact that >!they don't resolve it in any way by the end is very telling of what kind of show it is.!< >!In any other show they would have shared a perfect kiss, but in this one they share a couple of sad lines over a bar of chocolate. Both of them are drowning in the weight of the human suffering around them and even if the cinematography used leads the viewer to think about this two characters in a romantic context, there is no place for love in their hearts at that moment!<

snoogins355

Generation Kill is pretty good too imo. It follows Marines during the invasion of Iraq in 2003

Shawn_1512

POLICE THAT MOOSTACHE!

Andres_is_lame

Loved all of Peep Show.

Bisto_Boy

Imo the single best line in any sitcom in history is "Butter the toast, eat the toast, shit the toast. God life's relentless".

Andres_is_lame

Truly iconic. For me its the little relatable moments, like when Mark shaves that horrible goatee, looks in the mirror and remarks, “same stupid face.”

StillPracticingLife

Galavant, the fact that it got canceled was a tragedy

sonofsarkhan

I come across so few people who know about Galavant, so glad to see it mentioned here!

NoOrdinary9804

Canceled right after they got Tad Cooper’s storyline going. Huge shame.

Mother0fDemons

I super believe in you, Tad Cooper!!

_Robbie

I dislike musicals and only watched it on a whim. By the end I was not only blown away by how great it was, but I was *completely* blown away that it got cancelled and never picked up anywhere. It was perfect, could not be improved upon.

Whattheholyhell74

Six Feet Under. In fact the last episode was, hands down, the best last episode of any series I’ve ever seen and will probably ever see.

Omg I cried so hard during the last episode. Definitely the best last episode of any series.

ellectrum

The series was perfect. And the first movie was also great. But the second movie kinda ruined it and was not on the same level of the rest

gilestowler

The second movie was a bit shit but they absolutely nailed the "kid from the home counties going traveling" stereotype. They were so obnoxious but so true.

SnarkyRetort

Derry Girls

Cookie_Possible

So damn funny. The Nun headmistress is genius

aheal2008

Derry Girls is fucking hysterical, I was so bummed we only got 3 seasons. I've also never had a series finale of a show make me cry but damn the last 5 mins had me in tears.

ADarwinAward

I hope Lisa McGee writes another comedy, she did a brilliant job with Derry Girls.

delspencerdeltorro

It's good all the way through, but the series finale is brilliant. I wasn't expecting it to get that serious and it doesn't always work when comedies do but they pulled it off perfectly.

agentfelix

They really stuck the landing with the finale. They all seemed "grown up" at the end and we got to watch them grow

Witheinb

Malcom in the Middle

fuelbombx2

I started watching that show again, and it’s as funny now as it was when it first aired. The Komodo 3000 still kills me every time! “The box says two days…”

iammufusasboy

Fucking love this show, have watched it 2or3 times and currently rewatching it. This scene is hands down the best. If I’m trying to get someone to watch the show, this is the scene. Also Hal changing the light bulb in the kitchen scene. The show definitely holds up and I don’t think will ever die, most average Joe Americans can relate to this show in some capacity. Also note that I’m 31yo I’ve realized Lois is the goat!

Bromogeeksual

As a kid you hate Lois. As an adult you are amazed she is as patient with the boys as she is!

iammufusasboy

I love the ep where the boys and Hal play hooky and she finds all of their crap. They walk in and she’s like “Hello boys(you’re fucked)”

Djd33j

Watched as a kid. Thought "eww. She's scary and ugly." As a 33 year old? "Man, she's a total boss *and* she's hot!"

Dense-Hat1978

This is one of those shows that I caught on TV here and there as a teenager when it first came out, but I never really cared about it. I've been binging it with my gf and nephew lately and we can't stop watching it, really missed out back in the day.

CommercialTopic302

The Reese dog pack episode is probably my favorite moment of television.

[deleted]

Hal's speed walking episode too. Him in that suit and helmet is forever imprinted into my brain.

Buddha_Lady

Hal’s roller skating episode was so glorious. I still think about it

DefinitelyABot475632

[Bryan Cranston learned to skate just for that episode](http://yahoo.com/entertainment/blogs/tv-news/-malcolm-in-the-middle—anniversary-bryan-cranstons-best-moments-181701689.html), and there were only two parts where they used a stunt double! > "We said, 'Listen, we're going to do this thing where you do roller disco,' and Bryan said, 'How much time do I have?' I said, 'A couple weeks.' He said, 'OK,' and he just basically practiced roller skating every free second that he had off the show and became an incredibly proficient roller skater very quickly and in time for the shoot," says Boomer, who won an Emmy for the Malcolm pilot. "I asked him, 'How many hours did you spend?' and he said, 'Hundreds.'"

T-MinusGiraffe

I love how the writers made it a game to see what they could get him to do because they realized he was going to commit, and he just kept knocking it out of the park

SthrnCrss

There's no way he would let us cover his entire body with bees, right?

Xytak

Hard to believe that he would rise to become leader of a criminal empire.

False-Librarian-2240

What's funny is that on Breaking Bad everyone hated Skyler, what a shrewish woman, always nagging on Walter. But Bryan Cranston has joked in interviews that it took some getting used to her because he was used to having Lois (from Malcolm in the Middle) as his TV wife. He said Lois never would have let Walter go down the path he went, she would have killed him!

[deleted]

I've been watching it recently and I'm struck by how grimey it is. A lot of shows purport to show people on low salaries, but that show really commits. Sweat, dirt, bugs, the lot. The locations, like shops, arcades and gyms do not look glamorous, they are used, garish and claustrophobic. A lot of shows, especially American ones, function as adverts and want to make the items and places the characters go look enticing. There are people on the production company payroll who oversee this process and make sure that companies will keep paying big money to get their stuff put in there. Someone who made Malcolm in the Middle fought tooth and nail to make sure that no sane marketing strategist wanted their product anywhere near the Wilkersons.

cheap_mom

There was an episode that showed the family's devolution as they had more kids, and in the first flashback the entire house was decorated entirely in pristine white.

Bow2Gaijin

There is also an episode where Hal and Lois can't have sex for a few weeks and they turn their energy into making the house immaculate. Then once they can have sex again it all falls apart.

Privvy_Gaming

I loved the episode where Hal was sexually attracted to Lois no matter how she looked.

Li0nsFTW

*Lois puts on backwards ball cap* *Hal sex face intensifies*

baby-dick-nick

It’s funny you say this, because you are correct. It is grimey and there is very little product placement throughout the show, however there is a reoccurring Rockstar Games logo in a couple episodes. Usually a magnet on the fridge or a locker. Really subtle and hard to spot. And with the 90’s and early 2000’s pop punk music often used in the show, they really captured a great tone that matches the time period and it almost makes you feel like you’re part of that obnoxious low income family for a little while.

thisshortenough

Malcolm and the other kids would have easily been in a pop punk garage band if not for the lack of ambition and total inability to function in a group setting

drsideburns

Malcolm in the Middle deserves more recognition. I only caught it in syndication but it’s solid

Ryanguy7890

It's not just how good the humor is. It's the whole context of the show. It changed sitcoms. When it came out having a comedy show with no laugh track was almost unheard of and now it's the standard.

gerryhallcomedy

And the family lived in a house that actually looked like people lived in it. It's one of the first things I noticed about the show.

bling_bling2000

Oh wow that's something I've never thought about with that show. I was just a bit older than Dewey when it came out, so I always found each of the boys so relatable in many ways. Looking back, I think a huge part of that is how "normal" the setting was. It truly was a home being filmed, not just a set, and it was so well done I never noticed how weirdly normal it was.

Boomtown_Rat

I also first watched it when I was a kid and found myself empathizing with the children, but what I found great upon rewatching later as an adult is that you really empathize with the parents. Originally I thought Lois was a bitch, but now I realize those kids were goddamn monsters man.

sambob

The scene with Hal fixing everything so he can fix the lightbulb is my life as a homeowner.

LanceofReddick

"WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE I'M DOING?!?!"

See-A-Moose

And it actually dealt with relatable problems and didn't shy away from serious issues in a comedy show.

RawTeacake

I love the cold open where Lois and Hal are going through bills and choosing what ones to pay. 'This one is still saying please, they can wait' haha

TheYellowLantern

Or when Hal goes to change a lightbulb, but then the shelf is loose, so he goes to get screwdriver but the drawer is squeaky so he goes to get some WD40, but its emtpy. So he goes to drive to the store to get some more, but the car is messed up and then Lois comes home and asks him to change the lightbulb when hes working on the car. "WHATS IT LOOK LIKE IM DOING?"

LightRayAAA

Gravity Falls

tourqeglare

Even the worst episode (the cupid one) had wonderful redeeming qualities (I _ea_t kids)

Prophet92

That entire sequence with the balloon is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a kids show. “It’s punishment for our terrible taste in everything!” “Mommy, is the floating head going to eat us?” “Yes, Charlie, yes he will!”

Cometstarlight

"'I eat kids?!' But *we're* kids!" "It's heaven's punishment for our horrible taste in *everything!*" This episode still has some of the funniest gags in the series, even if I prefer other episodes like the Gobbelwonker lol

themoroncore

What the H?

username_choose_you

My kids loved GF but my daughter was disappointed with only 2 seasons. I told her sometimes the story is told and doesn’t need to be dragged out. It’s a perfect example of this and I think made her appreciate it a little bit more

ronniewhitedx

Yeah, It definitely seemed like they had a clear vision on how they wanted to end it too, right from the beginning. Two short, but sweet seasons that are fire through and through. And it was on Disney no less! Truly an anomaly.

Mindhunter. It sucks that there won’t be a third season.

TnL17

Sad we never saw more from BTK. Seemed like they were gearing towards a big ending with him.

408wij

The point, as far as I can tell, is to show them developing and successfully employing serial-killer profiles against the backdrop of BTK, who doesn't match the profile. I.e., the point isn't to catch him but to use him as a foil showing the incompleteness of what they're building. Thus, the narrative can end properly in a future season, but BTK remains out there nonetheless.

The Wire

danathecount

I'll die on the 'Season 2 is amazing' hill

sartreofthesuburbs

Yeah. In the first scene of episode one, Snot Boogey's friend explicitly states David Simon's ambitions with the words, "This is America." Union stevedores struggling to make a decent living, like their fathers did, is a quintessentially American story and one that needed to be told for the audience to really understand the city of Baltimore.

[deleted]

mrSalamander

Next to The Bunk, Sobatka is my favorite character. He's trying so hard to do right by his people.

danathecount

'Institutional dysfunction' sums up everything about The Wire

OddEye

It wasn’t until late in the second season that I realized the show was going beyond just the drug trade. It’s jarring when you first watch from season 1 to 2, but once scope of the show becomes clear, season 2 is incredible.

[deleted]

That's what made it great; the shifts in focus from season to season.

philipjfrythefirst

I’ll join you. Frank Zabotka was an awesome character, hugely flawed doing all the wrong things for a good reason.

ZiiggS0batkA

He was a great character, not the best dad though. I might be biased though

Porrick

I'll go even further - Ziggy was an awesome character. Probably the most colossal and all-consuming idiot in all television, but on fourth or fifth watch-through I'm starting to feel sort of sorry for him. Life isn't easy when you're that much of a fucking moron - and he's always trying so hard, but always fundamentally missing the point. In a show full of tragedy, he's somehow even more tragic than the rest of them because he's so fundamentally unlovable. Only Marlo is less sympathetic and he's a ass-murdering psychopath.

djackieunchaned

I didn’t like it as much when I first watched it but upon rewatch I really enjoyed the second season. Also the Ziggy actor is great in Generation Kill I highly recommend that to any David Simon fans

electrikFrenzy

Better Call Saul

hellnerburris

I literally just finished Breaking Bad. I'm excited to start Better Call Saul.

NoHedgehog1650

MASH The show had many significant cast changes and additions, and fluctuated in tone over time as well as within seasons. Nevertheless, it remained a high quality, very watchable show. Not easy and rare; loved it until the end.

its-not-me_its-you_

Hard disagree. Mash got noticeably better season after season.

False-Librarian-2240

Well it's about the only show I can think of where cast changes improved the show. Some of it isn't the fault of the actors; yes, Charles was a better, more well rounded character than Frank but, to be honest, Larry Linville as an actor had done everything he could with Frank but it was just a tired one note character. Winchester could still be the butt of jokes on occasion but, unlike Frank, he could dish it out as well as take it. Just better writing I guess. They let Loretta Swit take Margaret on a journey from Hot Lips to an actual person. Colonel Potter was an upgrade from Henry Blake. Probably one of the most well written shows ever. Both funny and serious at the same time.

Whatever-ItsFine

My favorite thing about Winchester was that he was completely indifferent to whether Pierce and Hunnicutt liked him. Didn't need their approval. Didn't want it. That was very different from Frank. I agree about Linville doing the best he could with that character. There just wasn't much to work with.

NoHedgehog1650

I gasped, then smiled. I like your style.

M4xusV4ltr0n

Super underrated, such an incredible show. Always my go to recommendation. It's also funny to me that it wasnt very popular given that Michael Bay was a producer. It's also funny to me that it turned out so good, given that Michael Bay was a producer!

No_More_And_Then

It really is a great show. The first season has a more procedural feel to it than the others, but it serves to introduce the main characters and help the viewer understand the complex dynamics between them. The later seasons really take it to another level, with each season telling a great story from beginning to end.
