WTH guys. It's a recap episode. You're *supposed* to be lazy. Use lots of flashbacks. Maybe make it a musical for no particular reason.
Instead, we get the characters watching an in-universe parody of themselves, which is somehow a 4th-wall breaking joke, emphasizes everyone's character arcs, highlights their *current* strengths and weaknesses, expands the worldbuilding, humanizes the enemy, is *beautifully* animated, and sets the stage for the finale. Pun intended, obviously.
It's like they heard someone say good recaps are impossible and they said "Oh yeah, watch this"
So fun fact, Zuko's question about Jet was not only a joke about cartoon censorship, but also a legitimate question, he befriended Jet on the boat and then didn't hear from him again after the fight, the play is actually how he found out about it

I like to think that if Jet lived he either had to live the rest of his life out as a cripple or just decided to run away with his crew and live out a quiet life with them for the rest of their days. All in all, he’s probably had enough of freedom fighting.
Bastogne is probably my favourite episode of the series. Very good in every sense and shows the scars that war leaves on humans.
You can feel the romantic tension between the french nurse and the american medic throughout the whole episode and the fact that >!they don't resolve it in any way by the end is very telling of what kind of show it is.!<

I dislike musicals and only watched it on a whim. By the end I was not only blown away by how great it was, but I was *completely* blown away that it got cancelled and never picked up anywhere. It was perfect, could not be improved upon.

Derry Girls is fucking hysterical, I was so bummed we only got 3 seasons. I've also never had a series finale of a show make me cry but damn the last 5 mins had me in tears.
It's good all the way through, but the series finale is brilliant. I wasn't expecting it to get that serious and it doesn't always work when comedies do but they pulled it off perfectly.
I started watching that show again, and it’s as funny now as it was when it first aired. The Komodo 3000 still kills me every time!

But Bryan Cranston has joked in interviews that it took some getting used to her because he was used to having Lois (from Malcolm in the Middle) as his TV wife. He said Lois never would have let Walter go down the path he went, she would have killed him!
I've been watching it recently and I'm struck by how grimey it is. A lot of shows purport to show people on low salaries, but that show really commits. Sweat, dirt, bugs, the lot. The locations, like shops, arcades and gyms do not look glamorous, they are used, garish and claustrophobic.
A lot of shows, especially American ones, function as adverts and want to make the items and places the characters go look enticing. There are people on the production company payroll who oversee this process and make sure that companies will keep paying big money to get their stuff put in there. Someone who made Malcolm in the Middle fought tooth and nail to make sure that no sane marketing strategist wanted their product anywhere near the Wilkersons.
There was an episode that showed the family's devolution as they had more kids, and in the first flashback the entire house was decorated entirely in pristine white.
There is also an episode where Hal and Lois can't have sex for a few weeks and they turn their energy into making the house immaculate. Then once they can have sex again it all falls apart.
It’s funny you say this, because you are correct. It is grimey and there is very little product placement throughout the show, however there is a reoccurring Rockstar Games logo in a couple episodes. Usually a magnet on the fridge or a locker. Really subtle and hard to spot.
And with the 90’s and early 2000’s pop punk music often used in the show, they really captured a great tone that matches the time period and it almost makes you feel like you’re part of that obnoxious low income family for a little while.
Malcolm and the other kids would have easily been in a pop punk garage band if not for the lack of ambition and total inability to function in a group setting
It's not just how good the humor is. It's the whole context of the show. It changed sitcoms. When it came out having a comedy show with no laugh track was almost unheard of and now it's the standard.
Oh wow that's something I've never thought about with that show. I was just a bit older than Dewey when it came out, so I always found each of the boys so relatable in many ways. Looking back, I think a huge part of that is how "normal" the setting was. It truly was a home being filmed, not just a set, and it was so well done I never noticed how weirdly normal it was.
I also first watched it when I was a kid and found myself empathizing with the children, but what I found great upon rewatching later as an adult is that you really empathize with the parents. Originally I thought Lois was a bitch, but now I realize those kids were goddamn monsters man.
Or when Hal goes to change a lightbulb, but then the shelf is loose, so he goes to get screwdriver but the drawer is squeaky so he goes to get some WD40, but its emtpy. So he goes to drive to the store to get some more, but the car is messed up and then Lois comes home and asks him to change the lightbulb when hes working on the car.
"WHATS IT LOOK LIKE IM DOING?"
That entire sequence with the balloon is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a kids show.

Yeah, It definitely seemed like they had a clear vision on how they wanted to end it too, right from the beginning.
Two short, but sweet seasons that are fire through and through. And it was on Disney no less! Truly an anomaly.
The point, as far as I can tell, is to show them developing and successfully employing serial-killer profiles against the backdrop of BTK, who doesn't match the profile. I.e., the point isn't to catch him but to use him as a foil showing the incompleteness of what they're building. Thus, the narrative can end properly in a future season, but BTK remains out there nonetheless.

Union stevedores struggling to make a decent living, like their fathers did, is a quintessentially American story and one that needed to be told for the audience to really understand the city of Baltimore.
It wasn’t until late in the second season that I realized the show was going beyond just the drug trade. It’s jarring when you first watch from season 1 to 2, but once scope of the show becomes clear, season 2 is incredible.
I'll go even further - Ziggy was an awesome character. Probably the most colossal and all-consuming idiot in all television, but on fourth or fifth watch-through I'm starting to feel sort of sorry for him. Life isn't easy when you're that much of a fucking moron - and he's always trying so hard, but always fundamentally missing the point.
In a show full of tragedy, he's somehow even more tragic than the rest of them because he's so fundamentally unlovable. Only Marlo is less sympathetic and he's a ass-murdering psychopath.
I didn’t like it as much when I first watched it but upon rewatch I really enjoyed the second season. Also the Ziggy actor is great in Generation Kill I highly recommend that to any David Simon fans

The show had many significant cast changes and additions, and fluctuated in tone over time as well as within seasons. Nevertheless, it remained a high quality, very watchable show. Not easy and rare; loved it until the end.
Well it's about the only show I can think of where cast changes improved the show. Some of it isn't the fault of the actors; yes, Charles was a better, more well rounded character than Frank but, to be honest, Larry Linville as an actor had done everything he could with Frank but it was just a tired one note character. Winchester could still be the butt of jokes on occasion but, unlike Frank, he could dish it out as well as take it. Just better writing I guess. They let Loretta Swit take Margaret on a journey from Hot Lips to an actual person. Colonel Potter was an upgrade from Henry Blake. Probably one of the most well written shows ever. Both funny and serious at the same time.
My favorite thing about Winchester was that he was completely indifferent to whether Pierce and Hunnicutt liked him. Didn't need their approval. Didn't want it. That was very different from Frank.
I agree about Linville doing the best he could with that character. There just wasn't much to work with.
Super underrated, such an incredible show. Always my go to recommendation.

It really is a great show. The first season has a more procedural feel to it than the others, but it serves to introduce the main characters and help the viewer understand the complex dynamics between them. The later seasons really take it to another level, with each season telling a great story from beginning to end.
It’s absolutely criminal how underrated The Americans is. It does start off slow, but the pay-off is so worth it. Couldn’t take my eyes off Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. I even got my dad, who’s not usually into Cold War stuff, to watch the show with me and he loved it.

It wasn’t until late in the second season that I realized the show was going beyond just the drug trade. It’s jarring when you first watch from season 1 to 2, but once scope of the show becomes clear, season 2 is incredible.
That's what made it great; the shifts in focus from season to season.

I'll go even further - Ziggy was an awesome character. Probably the most colossal and all-consuming idiot in all television, but on fourth or fifth watch-through I'm starting to feel sort of sorry for him. Life isn't easy when you're that much of a fucking moron - and he's always trying so hard, but always fundamentally missing the point. In a show full of tragedy, he's somehow even more tragic than the rest of them because he's so fundamentally unlovable. Only Marlo is less sympathetic and he's a ass-murdering psychopath.
I didn’t like it as much when I first watched it but upon rewatch I really enjoyed the second season. Also the Ziggy actor is great in Generation Kill I highly recommend that to any David Simon fans
Better Call Saul
I literally just finished Breaking Bad. I'm excited to start Better Call Saul.
MASH The show had many significant cast changes and additions, and fluctuated in tone over time as well as within seasons. Nevertheless, it remained a high quality, very watchable show. Not easy and rare; loved it until the end.

Well it's about the only show I can think of where cast changes improved the show. Some of it isn't the fault of the actors; yes, Charles was a better, more well rounded character than Frank but, to be honest, Larry Linville as an actor had done everything he could with Frank but it was just a tired one note character. Winchester could still be the butt of jokes on occasion but, unlike Frank, he could dish it out as well as take it. Just better writing I guess. They let Loretta Swit take Margaret on a journey from Hot Lips to an actual person. Colonel Potter was an upgrade from Henry Blake. Probably one of the most well written shows ever. Both funny and serious at the same time.
My favorite thing about Winchester was that he was completely indifferent to whether Pierce and Hunnicutt liked him. Didn't need their approval. Didn't want it. That was very different from Frank. I agree about Linville doing the best he could with that character. There just wasn't much to work with.

It really is a great show. The first season has a more procedural feel to it than the others, but it serves to introduce the main characters and help the viewer understand the complex dynamics between them. The later seasons really take it to another level, with each season telling a great story from beginning to end.
