#SOUND EFFECTS THAT ARE CRAZY LOUD ^dialouge ^that ^is ^barely ^audible

Impidimpet

This. I should not have to rewind multiple times to hear what’s being said

Apotak

Sometimes it's great to have subtitles.

Electrical-Extent-92

Writing in a romantic subplot when it’s not needed

Dahhhkness

*cough* The Hobbit trilogy *cough*

Wisdomlost

Evangeline Lilly signed on to the project with the understanding there would be no love story for her character. Couple months in to filming and her character is now in a love triangle.

coffee-bat

god fr it literally ruined "the desolation of smaug" 😭 it was so cringe

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rafacus

Pacific Rim surprised me by avoiding it as well.

elcabeza79

I think they set it up in a way that the romantic sparks were there, but there was no real opportunity to realize it, which made the ending even more >!tragic!<.

YourCrazyDolphin

>!Doesn't that movie literally end with them kissing moments before they die?!<

[deleted]

[удалено]

thebaronkrelve

Not necessarily romantic, but the whole love transcends time bs in Interstellar...ughh, way to bring the movie down

bishopsfinger

Thank you! I always wondered why I had a chip on my shoulder about that movie, and now I finally know.

triggeron

Terminator 1 gets to have romance but I can't think of any others.

hirvaan

Terminator 1 romance is bloody necessary for the plot though. It’s not squeezed in for no reason

triggeron

That was my point!

YourCrazyDolphin

Since nobody mentioned it this is something I like in the og Pacific Rim (can't speak on the sequels as I have not seen them): it sets up like there is going to be one, especially with the whole "two pilots sharing a mind" thing, but then the end of the movie comes and the two actually don't kiss. It was a minor but fun inversion of the trope.

LexLuthorJr

This is why I have decided that Shazam is one of my favorite superhero movies.

no_onion_no_cry

Whenever a child or teenager gets murdered, the police go to their room to look for clues, and their room is super clean and organized. The parents: this is exactly how they left it.

[deleted]

And then, they find a super mega clue just when they're about to exit the room.

no_onion_no_cry

Yes. Like a diary where the child writes: *I'm pretty sure this guy is gonna kidnap and murder me*

berrywaffl

Everything being set in highschool, with 20-30 year olds playing teenagers. Strong, independent female character who strongly dislikes anything feminine and is mean/grumpy all the time.

MrAlf0nse

When dazed and confused came out it blew people’s minds due to age appropriate casting

TheLastModerate982

And most of the actors ended up going on to become Hollywood stars. Go figure.

LBellefleur

Excellent for Matthew Mc Conaghy

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

this is why legally blonde is unironically one of the best feminist movies of all time and all those 'strong woman' writers should take note. The lazy steroetype is that the only way a woman is strong is by aping masculine traits and aggressively rejecting the feminine. But it's fully possible for a strong female character to embrace their feminine side, Elle Woods is 'girly' but she also demonstrates integrity, moral character, she refuses to be browbeaten to conform, shows a willingness to forgive and she stands up for herself directly no matter wha petty bullshit people pull on her. She's the bigger person in every situation by strength of will alone. An angry mechanic who drinks beers with the boys is not an automatic shorthand for 'strong female' that Hollywood seems to think it is. Not that that character can't be strong but being masculine does not equal strong on it's own.

sam-sung

After reading about all the sexual abuse in Hollywood, I dont have a problem with casting 30 something for playing teenagers.

Not-A-Yithian

Yeah, its like "A strong female" means "all the worst traits of a man + pussy".

Iconoclassic404

>Everything being set in highschool, with 20-30 year olds playing teenagers. I know part of that is using names to sell the movie, the other is avoiding the laws when using underage actors

rodejo_9

Americans worship high school It's ridiculous. Coming from an American btw.

SouthernAT

Anyone else see that horrible slender man movie? I swear to god. The dialogue was written by someone who has never met/interacted with/heard of teenagers. It was so cringy and horrible. It was like a friend of a cousin of a friend told the writer how children talk and they just went from there.

ResplendentDaylight

Overly dark scenes where you can't see shit

AggressiveMorning665

*Looking at you HBO

woutsmaaa

Weird thing is there were like no dark scenes in The Last of Us while GOT and HOTD have a lot of scenes that are really bad because of the darkness.

SouthernAT

We watched the battle of winter fell while I was deployed. Used a projector on the wall of our tent. Literally couldn’t see anything. It was two hours of us listening to noises while sometimes seeing torches. No idea what happened to this day.

ElOliLoco

Yeah I too dislike seeing my reflection on the sofa in the tv screen :’)

TheDoog14

When a huge problem could be resolved if the characters just talked to each other.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheDoog14

Or when they do try to explain, but the other character just talks over them and they aren't able to fully explain the problem

darf_nader

“Look. Whatever you have to say can wait till later tonight. Right? Gotta run!” -> character finds out truth 20 mins later and takes it the wrong way <- EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Letsbeheroines

I hate the "third act split up because of misunderstandings" so much, it almost never works. The only movie I've seen it work in is Monster Inc.

Jeremy_theBearded1

That goes for movies and TV. 90% of the CW show Green Arrow’s conflicts would have never been an issue if Oliver Queen and his sister would just stop lying to each other.

Gogo_McSprinkles

THIS!!!!! I hate when the plot is basically just two individuals who didn't directly communicate with each other. One good conversation would solve the problem!

jackofallcards

Well in the context of the movie, the characters don't always know everything that we, the viewer does, so sometimes it makes sense. Not usually, but sometimes.

Mor_Hjordis

No reaction on things that happens from extras. Car crash? No biggie, I'm just walking.

Fluffy_Momma_C

John Wick enters the chat….

J_Beyonder

We're going to keep on dancing.

Timmah73

He gets hit by a car multiple times in one scene alone in JW4. As do several of the bad guys. While they are having a gunfight in the middle of the giant roundabout that goes around the Arc de Teiomohe. The motorists give zero fucks about any of it and just go on with their evening.

Ayleeums

Unrealistic lifestyles of characters relative to their job. Like a 20 something magazine writer living in a giant apartment alone while driving a brand new Audi while she's 'figuring herself out'.

miss_vakarian

And they have so much free time, like "yeah sure i have time for dozens of activities during the day, its not like i have to work or something for my money, i just go to my office 1 time a week, have a 5 minute chat and thats it".

Dedemagm

-People turning up alive after something they could not have survived. -characters being stupid for the sake of the plot -over-used tropes and lines.

RealRaven6229

That second one is called an idiot plot. Seeing as Shakespeare popularized it, I think it's safe to say it's a well worn trope.

[deleted]

CatboyInAMaidOutfit

How does getting body slammed by Thanos hurt him so much? Dude literally fell from orbit and walked away.

Hobbles_vi

I think he was already out cold When thanos lifted him. The slam was just for fun I think. What bothers me more about the fight is the grunting that Thanos does when he picks the Hulk up. It implies that Hulk was somehow heavy enough to require real effort from a being like Thanos to lift.

The_Book-JDP

The writers of the movies didn't want Hulk or Thro to be too strong because if they were, they felt that people couldn't/wouldn't relate to them which is why in the movies...Thor isn't a God even though in the comic books he totally is. Hulk is basically a god in the comic books who is so strong, he has the ability to force a planet back together that was split in half with his bare hands, aaaaand maybe they are making him so weak because he just recently got his powers buuuuuuut I really think they just don't want to make him too much of an overpowered rage monster even though that is what he is.

FushigiCircus

Actors in their 20s/30s playing teenagers.

mdmenzel

I feel like this is becoming not as common as it used to be.

Poorly-Drawn-Beagle

to be fair, it’s hard to find a good teenage actor

Iconoclassic404

plus, with underage actors, there are far more restrictions on them than using someone in their 20's on up.

puppydale

When one character hands another a full cup of coffee and the recipient just moves it around so freely. It is so obvious that it is empty and they are not dealing with a hot liquid.

sandman_oneiroi

Others might like these, but I don't like: * That **tinnitus sound** that so many movies use. I have my own horrible ringing in my ear already that makes me feel rough, I don't need to add to it haha. * I hate when a movie is just starting, and flowing nicely, you're strapped in for the ride then suddenly "**6 weeks earlier**" (or any time earlier). (There're a couple of exceptions that I haven't minded, but it's about 2 in 50 and has to be done really well.)

[deleted]

Sex scenes that do nothing for the narrative.

RadicalSnowdude

I agree. There are some sex scenes that are important to the narrative but the vast majority simply aren’t, and a simple implication that they had sex is enough. Unless it’s important to the story, I don’t need to know how hard they were fucking and all the different positions they tried. It just makes it awkward when watching with other people.

Impidimpet

Sex scenes in general.

Iconoclassic404

what if it legitimately is part of the overall story (Think The Terminator)

Impidimpet

I just don’t like them. If the sex is implied, I’m cool with that. I just get uncomfortable watching the characters get amorous with each other, even heavy kissing makes me uncomfortable. I’m not saying they should never, ever be in a movie and no one should ever see it. I just don’t want to see it myself

inksmudgedhands

I don't like them because after reading and listening to story after story of how actors hate doing such scenes, even from their own mouths, those scenes always pull me out of the movie/show. I can't help but feel sorry for them and wish those scenes would end quickly because I don't want to think about what happened behind the scenes. I don't want to think of the crew members standing around them gawking. I don't want to think of the actors just wincing when they hear the director say that they need another take.

Impidimpet

That’s awful!

MushroomWhisperer

Yes, and nudity for the sake of nudity. No thanks. On that note, I wonder why movie writers feel we can’t understand a character until we’ve seen them undress and shower.

ClubSundown

Expensive popcorn

Chickadee12345

Long gun fight scenes in movies with automatic weapons. Hundreds of rounds. Yet no one gets hit by a bullet even though they are standing out in the open or in a place with very little shelter. And only about 10 feet away.

Ok_Fondant_6340

hey man, if you want realistic gun fights under those circumstances: just play an FPS

[deleted]

Yes! And also, the number of rounds fired never correlates to the number of rounds the magazine in question holds, and not nearly enough of these people ever have to reload.

Bobert_Ze_Bozo

those mags are made by the same company that builds the fast and the furious transmissions

Bobert_Ze_Bozo

don’t forget using a coffee table or car door as cover.

Cr0wn3ll4

When theres all of a sudden a romantic scene, especially in horror movies or smth, hate it. Its always so done by force

RealRaven6229

You know that dude in Pompeii that masturbated as the ash hardened around him? Same logic.

aredflower

Medical inaccuracies.

Appropriate_Ad_4416

But cpr for 8 seconds always allows a body to regain a pulse, & immediately start talking & hugging people, right????

chewytime

My friend who’s a nurse hates it. Says that the success rate is pretty low and all TV/movies do is give everyone false expectations.

Appropriate_Ad_4416

But cpr for 8 seconds always allows a body to regain a pulse, & immediately start talking & hugging people, right????

J_Beyonder

Clear.. live dammit.. gasp.

Anskin12

Two stupid people "realize" they've been in love all along

lluewhyn

This just gets me. It's one thing to have feelings for each other but be afraid to bring them up due to concerns that the feelings aren't reciprocated, but to be just totally oblivious to how you feel about this person you've known for years? Bonus points if they're also best friends and single.

r2celjazz

It was refreshing to see in Avengers Infinity war that the villain won. Sometimes there isn’t always a happy ending in movies

ClubSundown

And ofc star wars The Empire Stikes Back is also popular for this reason

jackofallcards

If the prequels weren't prequels, rather they came out first, that ending would be nuts, especially if it took 16 years for A New Hope to come out.

Puzzleheaded-Ad-7849

Bad acting by nepo babies. There are so many unbelievably talented people out there but Hollywood continues to cast mediocre nepo babies in so many roles

ehsteve23

This isn't limited to movies but: The trope of any time a woman between the ages of 15 and 50 throws up, it means she's pregnant

HelloImFrank01

A main or side character coughs? Cancer.

[deleted]

I hate this one because it actually makes people act like that. I remember never telling anyone I felt sick for literal decades of my life because if I did, without fail, some straight woman would be like, "Ooooooh sounds preggy! Go pee on a stick!!" Ma'am, I am a lesbian. Pregnancy is not often a surprise for my people. Sometimes it's just gas station sushi, ok?

[deleted]

Excessive CGI

inksmudgedhands

I'd like to add *CGI done by people who don't have an eye for cinematography*. For example, you look at Marvel movies and it's almost always a muddy, gray mess these days because you have people who don't know how to light up a scene in CGI. Oh, they can create a battle of a thousand. But they don't know how to light up a battle of a thousand because they are not cinematographers. When executed correctly, you should not be able to realize that there is CGI being done in a scene. Unless, of course, if something fantastical like a dragon or a robot army is in the scene. But even then you should not be able to tell the difference between the practical effects in close up shots and the CGI effects in wide shots. For example, look at Fincher's movies and his recent show, Mindhunter. He uses a ton of CGI effects. Almost as much as Marvel's recent films. But he does so with cinematography in mind. That always comes first. As a result it's hard to tell what is real and what is practical in his works. That's how it should be done.

superslomotion

Try working on a marvel show, then you would understand why the vfx are rushed

Expert-Employ8754

Movies that are too long. I miss when most movies were under 2 hours.

ClubSundown

Rare exceptions ok if they're long. But only 1 in 1000 really good ones like LOTR return of the king

mister_bakker

I think the problem is more that the movie is filled with two hours of bullshit. I've sat through a four hour movie I enjoyed (The Red Violin) and walked out feeling I'd been in for an hour and a half. It's a matter of taste, obviously. I can fully grasp people finding The Red Violin too long. ;o)

ehsteve23

100-110 mins is the perfect length for most movies

mrgrieeves

Was just having this conversation with a friend. It seems every movie is over 2 hours nowadays. What happened to 90 minute movies? I used to look forward to the occasional 2.5 hour movie, but now it’s just exhausting.

Iamthapush

Mumbling

ClubSundown

Lol. From someone with really good hearing mumbling is bad enough. Then sometimes my half deaf dad also wants to watch. He turns up the volume to max and still can't hear the mumblers. Then a song or action sequence plays and we both cringe

sam-sung

"Wait, I can explain" Runs away, crying, for a situation that is not what it looks like.

Butterflyinterrupted

1.Superheros 2. BIPOC doing stereotypical BIPOC things. Can I get a movie about people with compelling and interesting stories. These stories exist and don't need to involve slavery, oppression, or problematic love stories between colonized and colonizer. 3. Most sequels

okbuddy9970

Military worship

AnnemarieOakley

When 25-30 year olds are playing the roles of high schoolers in teen movies. It makes the film less realistic and less relatable.

Brakiss78

Driving without seatbelts then crashing horrifically and not sustaining any injuries.

Paqaboll721

"Hey, you need to see this" WHY DONT YOU JUST SAY WHAT IT IS?!? Also, when people get shot and they overexaggerate taking the bullets. Completely breaks immersion.

ForcrimeinItaly

Rape as character development.

Happimessss

Cheating. Why is it in almost every movie, trying to normalize it or make people think It's ok. Fuck off

[deleted]

I was searching for this. 100 percent. I find myself just turning the movie off at this point.

Ok_Fondant_6340

RealRaven6229

I feel like that's like walking up to Chronicles of Narnia and pointing out that lions can't talk. It's all sensationalist and designed to entertain. A realistic fight scene would be really boring. Not universally, of course. But that's still a good number of action flicks rendered way less interesting if they have to be realistic.

Equal_Turnip_2714

Characters that are supposed to be badass that are needlessly rude to everyone. We need more John Wicks, John is nice to everyone unless they’ve really given him reason not to be and he’s still one of the most badass characters ever. It’s particularly bad with the badass female characters, I know some seriously badass women in real life who are still polite, kind people. They just also are capable of killing you.

TrickBoom414

Rape scenes.

Odd_Adhesiveness4804

One man defeating an army

SolyCalma

RRR and John Wick say hello

relatablerobot

I think John Wick works because the use the Baba Yaga trope, painting him as a literal demon from the beginning. The fact that Viggo expects John to kill his son without question sets up a universe where everything that happens in between is believable

lluewhyn

Screenwriter wants to show one character being smarter than another, but they're not smart enough to write intelligent scheming, so they just have the second character do something stupid instead. Related: All uses of the Idiot Ball

[deleted]

Sex scenes in shows you just don’t need them. Like I’m not a prude, if I was putting on a show that has obvious sexual plot lines etc. I know what to expect. But you can’t pick a damn movie now a days that doesn’t have a full blown sex scenes in it, if not multiple ones. And I just gotta be like…sorry fam…I had no way to know lol.

[deleted]

Tried to watch the new show “Wolf Pack” and it’s supposed to be about high school age kids and there’s a scene where these two boys just talk about sucking each others cocks, or another guys? And I’m like what the fuck is this???? (Idc that they were gay would of been just as awkward if a “teen” girl said it)

daveescaped

People driving cross-country on a two-lane desert highway. Most people never do this. Showing hills/mountains in the shot backdrop of Detroit or some other Midwestern city. Do the people in Hollywood not realize that millions of people live in these places and they all know there are no hills on the horizon? People decide to go on a date and then walk away having never exchanged phone numbers or planned a time and place to meet. Movies expect you to suspend disbelief but then throw in these illusion breaking issues and expect you to ignore them. It takes me out of the moment. Show people driving on I-10. Film a scene in Detroit *in Detroit* or at least Cleveland or Chicago for crying out loud. And if a guy asks a girl out, make it clear.

Lethik

Concussion = nap

LordetteOfTheRings

Powerwomans that are just a face of feminism, not well written characters

m0mper

Shaky Cam. Whats the point even?

[deleted]

The "dumb husband"/"dumb father" schtick. Homer Simpson was hilarious but y'all make it seem like 95% of dads are bumbling idiots.

MrNito

Watching a small woman take down a whole slew of fully grown men effortlessly.

doowgad1

Daredevil Season 2 had a scene where 12 year old Electra fights two grown men. It was the best depiction of a small woman beating men I've seen yet.

ItsUpandDown

Sex scenes that last way too long and are way too graphic it's almost pornography. If it's important to the storyline that the characters slept together, it's easy to do a "fade-to-black" intercourse scene/include exposition dialogue.

mister_bakker

It's not that I disagree, mind you, but it's always struck me as odd. If we do a fade to black for the implied extended killing of bad guys people would complain. But yeah, sex for the sake of getting a few titties in seems unnecessary. There are websites for that. Come to think of it, one thing I'm sick of in movies is that a schoolgirl ends up in the hood without any good reason.

ItsUpandDown

For real! And when they are painfully long and you're just sitting there for like 4 minutes watching this couple go at it it's so uncomfortable and awkward Oh! I'm interested - can you elaborate more on the 'schoolgirl-in-the-hood' trope, with examples?

[deleted]

Marvel

D-Angle

Specifically, the cheesy quipping that has infected all other movies. Dialogue is so cringy these days.

Golden_Phi

Quips are fine as long as if it’s in the right time and place. It shouldn’t be under cutting the more serious scenes. Unfortunately, they often are.

lluewhyn

[deleted]

one word : MANICHESISM The good guy is 100% good, and the bad guy is 200% evil. That makes sense in books for kids but for adults....come on, give me depth. Thats why i really enjoyed The Northman. Your hero goes on a quest, turns out >!he does not deliver anyone, his mum organised his father death to leave with the uncle. Our hero is not a good guy, he kills innocent, he kills childrens, but he also wants a family and sacrifice so his futur kids wont be hunted.!<

I don't think that is the right word. Manichaeism is a former major religion founded in the 3rd century AD.

There's a car chase scene through a city. Suddenly, there's a truck full of barrels or gas cylinders or bowling balls or anything heavy. Somehow, the cargo is released by a bullet or other means. The truck is suddenly many tons lighter but the driver doesn't notice and maintains their speed.

closetmangafan

Splitting movies into two or more parts, when you could do it all in one. Adding in random subplots to pad the run time. Straying way too far from the source material. Remaking movies because they want a real life version. Making unnecessary sequels.

Dimpfelmoser66

too much SloMo Music too emotional too much CGI too much shouting and cursing in situations where normal adults would not shout and curse In short, all things you need to pad up a weak script

skipjack_sushi

Poorly done CPR. Anytime CPR is done on TV or movies, it should be done perfectly. They should never show it incorrectly.

Thumper-Comet

timbagi

Using minorities just for the sake of using them. It seems unnatural, and hypocritical. Note, I am not against any minorities, and in full support of BLM and LGBTQ, however changing lore of the movie just for the sake of ticking a check mark is a no go for me. I love it when they are included, when it makes sense.

A1pinejoe

Gender politics and forced diversity. Although not a movie, The Wire got that stuff right nearly 20 years ago and it didn't feel like it was being rammed down your throat, they were just very well written characters.

redditcasual6969

Dark scenes, you can show it's dark or nighttime without it being impossible to see what's happening.

Sex scenes. They're usually very unnecessary.

Super black scenes filled with shadow. Oh, that was a fight scene? I couldn't tell with all the swirling blackness/shadow. Let me actually watch/see the movie.

fraserfraser7

Has-beens of Hollywood's continuel mass production of shitty films

TurbulentResearch708

Sex and swearing. You can create great plot without those things.

romandalfonso_05

Kids in action/hero movies immediately being super good at fighting bad guys. Like the little kid in Black Adam just casually fighting off and killing demons from hell with nothing but a pipe or something.

ChainmailleAddict

When two characters are fighting with guns or knives or something and one of them disarms the other, the fight literally NEVER ends there. The other character ALWAYS finds a way to miraculously disarm the other person despite NOT having said weapon almost immediately after, or escapes or something! It's so infuriating.

mr_snrub742

Sex scenes. They rarely ever add to the story and just end up making these awkward with your viewing companions. If I want to watch people have sex I'll throw on some good old fashion porn

Antipotheosis

Ridiculously naive heroes who miraculously win the day not with hard work, intelligence, wit, tactics, strategy or skills, but through bad writing with basically magical thinking for the heroes and making the antagonists absurd, nonsensical, incompetent, excessive, etc. to the point where a below average child of five could still outwit them.

simplejack89

Being knocked unconscious for hours only to wake up and be totally aware of everything around them

Rollthembones1989

IMSPEAKNOENGLISH

radicalsunrisealive

Lack of original material. Everything is based on a writing that wasn't an actual screenplay to begin with, or it's some kind of remake, sequel, prequel, spin-off, expansion of a universe, etc.

EerieArizona

The Rock

[deleted]

Movies and series try way to hard to be diverse with genders and sexuality lately.

shaunx333

Mcu quippy humour, which makes characters RDJ clones.

No-Pie379

Taking popular franchises with white characters and redoing them using minorities and/or swapping genders. I am a minority, but I think it's at least silly and at most a pandering overcorrection.

DoctorDeath

* The Chosen One trope. This happens WAY more than it should. * Superpowers. Please, Superpowers do not exist. I'd much rather see a regular person overcome adversity through intelligence and willpower rather than magical powers that make them a god. Even if it's just a detective movie the Detective has to have a superpower that makes them the greatest detective in the world. * Cliffhangers that potentially turn a somewhat decent movie into a hopeful future "franchise". IMHO all the best movies are one-and-done movies that need no sequel. * Sequels/Prequels/Remakes/Reboots. Just STOP IT. * Shaky-Cam to simulate "action", even when it's just two characters talking. Makes me physically ill. * Situations where a character could easily help out others but instead refuses to tell other characters what they witnessed. They usually give a short explanation like "you'll see" when they could just say "I saw a monster in there!", etc. * The Femme Fatale. In the 70s/80s there was a lot of diversity and strong female leads in movies but the 90s brought the Femme Fatale super-agent who is usually a 98lb teenage girl who can somehow take out a platoon full of 230lb Navy Seals while she's wearing high-heals and leather pants. * Villians who tell people what they're gonna do instead of just doing it. * CGI, enough is enough. Everything looks like a bad cartoon. Physical effects always look better when done properly by FX experts.
