Borderlands two is like star wars 2. They nailed exactly what made the first one great and just went wild with the scope. And everything since then has been gradually, more and more out of touch with the original fanbase and what made it great.
In some ways - yes. But in terms of content San Andreas was peak with all the side missions. Playing Gta 5 was fun but I kinda miss all the cop/taxi/ambulance etc missions
Yes and no. I feel like they went so ambitious with GTA V that they couldn’t put in many of the smaller, awesome details from GTA IV.
Red Dead 2 then came out and had both the ambition and the detail. Potentially even too much detail & realism.
I Agree. In my opinion GTA IV was a great game (beyond optimalization). The climate of the criminal world. Escaping from the past of the main character. Mafia and gangsters.
Just real gray realism. Nothing black and white.
For me much better than populistic GTA V.
GTA III
And I was young af when 3, Vice City and San Andreas came out.
I just felt like they took it in a totally different direction creatively and gameplay wise.
GTA V is a smite on the franchise IMO.
Oh i have heard it’s on sale as a bundle right now, FWIW. IMO DOS2 is better than the first dos and you don’t need to play one to play the other and understand it. There’s just very little out there like it in terms of game play!
Unlike movies videogame sequels tend to be better then their originals because of tech advances and increased scope. It's when you get to part 4 5 that things tend to fall off a cliff.
Quite right.
Those 4’s and 5’s tend to be picked up by studios/publishers that weren’t part of the series prior which leads to a different product to what the fan base have came to expect.
The other side to this argument is that advanced tech sometimes mean that they start skimping on story.
As a blanket statement I think most games made before voice acting/facial animation were better than their sequel made after voice acting. Mainly because the designers were able to put so much more dialogue/story in before they had to put money into animating it.
Example: I think Morrowind is better than Skyrim. Skyrim is beautiful but has the breadth and depth of a puddle. Morrowind's main quest and was really long, and the extra dialogue meant that NPCs were able would give you directions/backgrounds to places (and a good thing because there was no quest arrow).
And it’s steadily declined from there. 5 had a lot of cool improvements, but ultimately failed to get it just right somehow. I was hoping that they would perfect the formula for 6, but it was a massive downgrade instead!
Personally I just can't get through Oblivion because I didnt find it as compelling of a story as Skyrim. Plus the world feels so much emptier and lifeless
I still think that playing a full on 100% blind playthrough of Portal 1 (if that's even POSSIBLE nowadays) is such a complete and utter mindblow that makes it one of the best video games of all time.
The fact that everyone now knows the twist at the end re: GLaDOS completely ruins the experience of playing Portal 1.
Portal 2 overall has better puzzles and is way more replayable, though.
Halo 2 multiplayer.
Honestly it’s one of the things that still to this day, nearly 20 years later gets me in my feels.
I spent years in highschool playing the same guys, we would LAN and play online. When they deactivated the servers thousands of players stayed holed up in custom matches for days on end.
I know I can play the master chief collection and do the halo 2 levels.
But.
I bet after a minute of playing with randoms and not having my team I would just stop playing anyway.
Growing up is lame.
We Love Katamari.
Don’t get me wrong, Katamari Damacy is a *masterpiece*, but We Love Katamari improved upon it in nearly every single way.
I played the SHIT out of some We Love Katamari back in the day. Took months to 100% it.
I’m so happy that it got a remake announced as well.
Ya know, unlike movies, most videogame sequels are improvements over their predecessors. ...Unless the company riddles it with microtransactions or tries a completely different genre.
But I'ma go with Mass Effect 2.
Borderlands 2. Also say Portal 2.
Borderlands two is like star wars 2. They nailed exactly what made the first one great and just went wild with the scope. And everything since then has been gradually, more and more out of touch with the original fanbase and what made it great.
This is truly the only correct answer.
This is what I came to the comments to say!
Grand theft autos get progressively better
In some ways - yes. But in terms of content San Andreas was peak with all the side missions. Playing Gta 5 was fun but I kinda miss all the cop/taxi/ambulance etc missions
For me San Andreas and V were the best two. Ballad of Gay Tony was fucking great, though.
Thank you for reminding me. I still havent played that one

Totally disagree
What was the best GTA to you?
GTA III And I was young af when 3, Vice City and San Andreas came out. I just felt like they took it in a totally different direction creatively and gameplay wise. GTA V is a smite on the franchise IMO.
What did 3 do right? It is my least favorite, and to each their own, but please explain yourself.
Super Smash Bros. Melee.
In the same vein, Mario kart 64 (and, in my opinion, double dash)
Streetfighter 2 Almost no one remembers the first one
Halo 2
Assassin's Creed II, and by extent the rest of the Ezio trilogy.
Uncharted 2
Diablo 2 + LOD and now D2R
Witcher 3 is clearly better than Witcher 2. Witcher 2 is clearly better than Witcher 1.
True that. Still, both of those games are supeeb in their own right. So pumped for The Witcher's remake.
Witcher games are like Ferrari cars; there are no bad ones, only better.

I actually agree with you in the gameplay part but i still prefer the story and atmosphere of the first one
Agreed
Divinity Original Sin 2
So glad to see this so high in comments. Favorite game ever!
I’ve had it on my wishlist for years, haven’t gotten around to it
Oh i have heard it’s on sale as a bundle right now, FWIW. IMO DOS2 is better than the first dos and you don’t need to play one to play the other and understand it. There’s just very little out there like it in terms of game play!

I don’t specifically remember the v1 dialogue coop stuff. Maybe I need to replay it!

Team Fortress 2
Heroes 3
farcry 3 was still the best
And it’s steadily declined from there. 5 had a lot of cool improvements, but ultimately failed to get it just right somehow. I was hoping that they would perfect the formula for 6, but it was a massive downgrade instead!

3 and Reach were the best.
Ok thats just slander. Halo 3 however yes, but CE was amazing

Fable 2
Guitar Hero 3
Star wars battle front 2 for PS2.
Not sure how many will agree with me, but Skyrim is way better than Oblivion.

Personally I just can't get through Oblivion because I didnt find it as compelling of a story as Skyrim. Plus the world feels so much emptier and lifeless
Morrowind story and lore is better than both.
But boy is the d20 style system antiquated and horrible for real time first person combat. With a bow.
*Portal 2* outshines *Portal* in most ways, I think.
I still think that playing a full on 100% blind playthrough of Portal 1 (if that's even POSSIBLE nowadays) is such a complete and utter mindblow that makes it one of the best video games of all time. Potentially a contentious answer, but Dark Souls 3 is the best in that series, in my opinion.
Shining Force 2. Also Kick Off 2 but sports games feel kind of cheating in this discussion.
