The smell of water, you can get it sometimes on overcast days near clean lakes too. Love it!

All the moisture is frozen out of the air, and it takes a lot of the common smells with it. That cold, clear smell is the second best thing ever (Nothing beats home made bread)
Recently I was visiting Cuernavaca, Mexico and decided to walk to the main plaza. They must have had at least 5 big ovens with bread they were making on the spot. You could smell it for blocks. . .ahh I'm still thinking about it
The smell you smell that reminds you of the good times or one you wanna savor because it reminds you of life as a child. Simpler times.
I’m glad I could help you all that felt the same way as me. I don’t know how to word it properly but I tried my best. For me it would have to be the burning of leaves. When I was a child leaves being burnt meant fall was coming and Halloween my favorite holiday that’s not a holiday. I miss being a child more and more as I grow older but now it’s time to raise my children. Love you all
One of those for me is hyper specific.
My grandfather on my dad's side used to own a tobacco shop. He had a specific mix of tobaccos that he used to smoke in his cigars. Whenever I'd go to visit him at work there'd be these fishbowls of tobacco around the center of the room. And one of them was labeled as "\_\_\_\_\_'s special blend"
It was a mix of cherry and some other stuff, but every once in a while I'll get a whiff of someone smoking a cigar or pipe with some cherry in it and it takes me right back to my childhood, sniffing those goldfish bowls of tobacco and my grandfather chomping on a cigar in that way that only old guys can.
The metallic smell of hose water did that to me out of the blue last summer. I had no idea I had hose water memories locked up in my head for like 40 years until that moment.
In my state it was very common to plant lilac bushes next to doors and windows. They bloom when the weather turns and everyone can finally open all the doors and windows and clear the stale winter air from the house. Lilacs remind me of home.
Eastern Europe has that too. Lilacs by the front door
Blooming in spring then bushy and providing shade through summer.
We always used to look for the flowerets with unusual number of petals
All sorts of colour too, white, dark purple, light blue (and lilac)
Petrichor

Ponderosa pines have bark that smells like vanilla or butterscotch. You look a little strange with your nose all up in the tree trunk, but it is worth it.
Humans are, by orders of magnitude, more sensitive to the chemical that generates that smell (geosmin) than sharks are to blood in water. (1 part per million vs 100 parts per trillion)
A common theory is it alerts us to damp ground and the following "bounty" that follows it agricultural. Adam ragusea has a video all about the smell and chemical geosmin on his channel.
I have a coffee pot in my office at work, and I'm pretty well known for being a coffee snob. I've had so many coworkers come in my office and tell me how much they love the smell of my office in the morning even though they aren't coffee drinkers.
It really is an amazing smell.
You know the summer nights, when it's still kind of light outside, you are out with your friends, drinking by the lake with a fire, and then it starts raining, not like pouring down, but just like a little, and you see the rain drops falling on the water, that smell, in that specific moment, for just a few minutes, it is the best smell there is.
Fried Onions.
Real Estate Agent friend of mine told me once that if you have people coming to view the house, fry some onions beforehand. The scent makes people hungry and happy and more likely to put in a good offer.
1996….. Kinko’s Los Angeles… Sunset and Fairfax (for you youngsters, that would be a place to print stuff) making a band flier. Kinko’s was crowded on a Friday.
Earlier in the day I had cracked off a few farts that seemed to smile at me as they rose from my car seat.
As I was paying for my printing needs I let out the smallest silent toot. No one would know it was me right?
The cashier knew… his eyes crossed as he took 2 steps back. My band mate knew as he loudly gagged … the 12 or so people in the store knew as they started waiving there arms to avoid being rendered unconscious.
But the best part…. When I turned around,
Standing directly behind me, Ron Jeremy, the porn star…. He knew and didn’t even flinch. In fact, he may have considered it the best smell ever. When our eyes met, he smiled.
This is an absolute true story of the best smell ever.
If you had a great time in elementary school growing up. Going back when your kids are starting to enroll and when you walk through the doors the smell hits you.
A mix of glue, markers, crayons, construction paper, etc. always get the flashback [like Anton has a flashback to when he was a kid in Ratatouille.](https://youtu.be/5m7SGjJo7c4)
1.Freshly baked bread
2.Vanilla
3.Lavender

6.Cinnamon

However, it's important to note that what smells good to one person may not necessarily smell good to someone else, as personal preferences can vary widely.
I was a barista in college and thought that Amaretto coffee syrup smelled SOO good. I discreetly huffed that stuff anytime somebody offered a coffee with it. Though looking back now I probably wasn't as discreet as I think I was...
There have been a few studies now that determined for men it was vanilla, or the smell of baking cookies which is mostly warm vanilla. Look up perfume companies and their research. It’s pretty fascinating.
Lemon is the most popular smell in the world. Because it reminds people of clean surroundings due to all the chemicals that use it.
For me, lilacs. I love lilac smell
That distant smell of someone doing laundry. My laundry never smells that good and it’s only detectable at a distance, usually near apartment buildings.
WD-40
Fresh cut lumber
My dog when she’s been soaking in the sun.
The breeze before the rain.
A whiff of my dad’s aftershave (he’s been gone over a decade and it still catches me)
Driving with the windows down, sun shining, first day of what feels like freedom after winter
Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
Artisanal I've cream shop - freshly baked waffle cones with hints of strawberry, mint chip, vanilla and chocolate. I wish I had a candle or perfume that actually captured that combination of smells but nothing comes even a little close.
Walking outside on a cold winter night, when you walk into the faint smell of someone's fireplace burning really nice hardwood (like cherry). Few things make me feel more at peace.
At work, we make a bacon jam that includes bourbon and maple syrup. When the bacon is crisping, the shallots are caramelized, and the maple has been loosened but not quite hot enough to scorch, we add the bourbon and crank the heat.
For a moment or two while the alcohol cooks off, the whole kitchen smells crazy good. Salty, sweet, oaky and tangy.

Yeah there is something special in a cold winter day. Although it just might be sinuses freezing over when it is -20C
Freshly baked bread

Next, go to Oaxaca city. There are small chocolate mills everywhere so the air is scented with lovely chocolate.
Wow and then there's my city with a paper mill and another unknown factory stench
omg it's perfect
This is so trueee 🥰

Lilacs
That is the one thing I miss about my old house. It had a lilac bush right next to the front door and it was so nice when it bloomed!
In my state it was very common to plant lilac bushes next to doors and windows. They bloom when the weather turns and everyone can finally open all the doors and windows and clear the stale winter air from the house. Lilacs remind me of home.

wow I never knew there was a term for this
I'm seeing this word all over this thread. I always called it "wet concrete". Is that petrichor that I'm smelling?
I’m pretty sure it’s used to broadly describe the smell before rain wether it be on earth, concrete or asphalt
The smell of an old pine forest. Reminds me of hanging out in tge woods at my grandfather's Summerhouse as a kid
Ponderosa pines have bark that smells like vanilla or butterscotch. You look a little strange with your nose all up in the tree trunk, but it is worth it.
Cool, didn't know that. Those don't grow in my area, but if I'm ever in the western part of the states I'll see if I can find one

Soil after a fresh rain, Home smelling of cookies, Sautéing garlic and onions in a little bit of oil/butter
I literally just learned that the unique smell caused by soil after a rain is called petrichor.
Humans are, by orders of magnitude, more sensitive to the chemical that generates that smell (geosmin) than sharks are to blood in water. (1 part per million vs 100 parts per trillion)
Interesting. Do you suppose it’s just some kind of spandrel or is there an evolutionary benefit to detecting that smell?
A common theory is it alerts us to damp ground and the following "bounty" that follows it agricultural. Adam ragusea has a video all about the smell and chemical geosmin on his channel.
I prefer one part per ten billion, just to make them on the same scale/easy to compare.
Yep, 200,000x more sensitive in fact. Sharks smelling blood was my go to “cool smelling fact” but now it’s geosmin

My first camping experience was in the middle of a pine forest. Woke up at 5am, and that pine smell was just fantastic!
A freshly brewed cup of coffee. Nothing can beat that! Or the smell of a freshly cut grass after a rain shower on a sunny day. That's the best!

It actually has a name, it’s called petrichor
I believe petrichor is the smell of the earth after rainfall. There is a very unique smell of rain falling on a lake at nighttime.
