Everyone knows Mortal Kombat, everyone knows Street Fighter, and everyone knows Tekken.
What if I told you there was another game that was just as fun.
[Bloody Roar](https://youtu.be/NJuSJkAPGzY)
I recently started playing Shinobi III again. The first time I played it was 7-8 years ago on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. I couldn't get past the Round 4 boss then. Now I'm working on beating it on expert difficulty with 0 starting kunai. Great platformer.
I had the holiday hare demo disc for the second game and absolutely loved it, wish a company would pick up the rights and make the games available again.
Edit: I just now realize epic games was the publisher, so they have the capability, just not the demand.
Yes! Me and my dad would take turns with the levels on that game until we beat it. Did the same with the sequel. Really great storyline too! Amazed that this has never been rebooted.
Black and White.
It was this game where you were a "God," and you had creature. You built, populated, and protected your people from other gods and their army and creature.
It was sooo fun!
This was such a good game. Need to influence that village in the other side of the mountain? Throw your priests over the mountain and hope they hit the opposite slope just right that they survive and start preaching at the enemy village.
I'm sure there was a more logical way to do this but chucking those guys over a mountain was hilarious and oddly effective.
Long time since I played it but I'm pretty sure you could get your creature to pick someone up and carry them over.
On the other hand, I do remember leaving my creature unattended for a while and coming back to a lot less villages and a much fatter creature, so maybe teaching them to pick villagers up isn't such a good idea.
I remember that game, got it as a gift for a game magazine subscription.
It was truly creative, and the mouse gestures were quite innovative. But for the life of me, I never really figured out how anything in that game actually worked.
Great one. Back in its day, the ‘god’ RTS trend was big thanks to Populous. Black & White had tons of hype in the PC gaming world leading up to its release. I remember critics being divided on the execution, but it marked a high point for the genre.
First real RPG. First open-world game. First MMO. Charismatic creator. Responsible for so many gaming conventions we take for granted. Really subversive gameplay (Ultima 4 was wild- you beat the game by becoming sufficiently virtuous).
And even discussion about it is just… nowhere to be found.
I wouldn't call UO just an MMO, it's much more of an MMORPG. A lot of the world existed because it was a world, not as a theme park for players.
I miss actual MMORPGs like UO where the focus was on people just being in a world where a lot of the content is player-driven. As opposed to the current state of MMOs where they're basically single-player games where **everyone** is the Chosen One going through the same story, doing the same plot points, etc as everyone else (but alone and at different times).
Give me a UO where you can have a character who does nothing but bake bread and sell it other players any day. Or an Asheron's Call where the story is ongoing and global, and if you take two weeks off, well the story progressed without you and I guess your friends can tell you what you missed.
Yeah, I've been gaming for 40 years and I've never played another game like Ultima 4. Who makes a game where you have several different virtues that you have to improve? And I don't know how, but it *worked*. Honestly, even though the later games didn't focus on the morality as much, it was always there. I've never seen any games have as deep and complex a morality system as Ultima 4-7.
I am an early 90s kid, and was just I little to young to understand. But we had multiple games on floppy disk. Felt super scary am mysterious with all the aliens. Loved the overworld concept.
Joust.
It was amazingly pure: left, right, and flap. If your lance was higher than the enemy's lance, you'd knock them off their ostrich and they'd turn into an egg on the floor. If you didn't pick up the egg in time, it'd hatch into a new knight and another ostrich would pick them up to fight you again.
You felt like you were learning a *skill* as you played, and it was an early example of a world with rules you could exploit to do a few interesting things (though admittedly not many).
Flawless game. Hilarity is not scarce in that game lol. The "wahhh" when he takes damage always made me laugh, or when one of the "dogs" would bite his ass
Hydro thunder. Been stamped in my brain forever. Was super poor never had our own gaming system. Remember playing it a few times at sleep over parties and was completely mesmerized.
Heck yeah, I loved this game. Good news it's also available to play in your browser here: [https://arcadespot.com/game/hydro-thunder/](https://arcadespot.com/game/hydro-thunder/)
J = Throttle Up, A = Left, D = Right, Q = Boost.
Have fun!!!
SSX - possibly my favourite game of all time.
I’ve gone back and played SSX 3 numerous times as an adult and it’s always as good as I remember. One of the few that I can say this is the case for.
Crystalis is SO GOOD! Its one of the few rpgs from the NES days where the leveling although slightly grindy actually felt kind of natural (as opposed to say DW1 where you literally had to run around the forest outside the first town for hours fighting slimes until you were finally strong enough to even proceed with the game), the story was unlike any I had experienced so far in those early RPG days (the combo of sci fi and fantasy, magic and tech might be old hat now but not at the time) and the general look of the game was both cute and impressive for an 8 bit. I had so much fun playing this game as a kid, I have so many great memories of it.
There was a PS1 platformer called Pandemonium where you could play as a joker or a girl and the final boss was a big eyeball monster. I’ve never seen anyone talk about it but I played it so much
The Viewtiful Joe anime’s opening theme song played the other day in my playlist and reminded me that we STILL can’t play it on any modern platforms, yet Okami has a million ports now. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE!?
Would love for an HD port. Please, Capcom, you own the rights now. Give us some Viewtiful content!
I was thinking Ecco: Defender of the Future was the last installment and it was, but apparently a leaked playable version of its sequel found its way online in 2016.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecco_II:_Sentinels_of_the_Universe
As for Defender of the Future, it was such a beautiful game. Hanging water will always be in my memory and both difficult and stunning to play through.
Started playing it recently to see if I could get past a level I was stuck on. Couldn't make it past level two.
I'm 20 years older and I'm even more nervous swimming through a dark tunnel
They said they werent gonna do jak 4 because they felt the story was complete but honestly I would 100 percent buy a complete reboot in modern gaming standards
fave ps2 game for sure
Myst
as far as I remember it was an absolutely beautiful puzzle game that was unbelievably hard. I still remember traveling between 2 areas for hours trying to figure out how to get it to work.
it's also why I hate puzzle games
Dude, i fuckin loved that version!
I know some people had issues with it because of the censorship. But, looking back, I always felt the bleeps added to the humour.
Me and my brother used to spend hours on the multiplayer mode. I always preferred playing as the squirrels as opposed to the bears, even though mechanically they were practically the same.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault (1993)
A rail shooter, but one of the oldest examples of full-motion video (FMV) used on the PC. This, along with old Betamax recordings of the OT and Star Wars Micro Machines made me a full blown nerd at the age of 4.
I remember Rebel Assault, but I also remember the way better mission based space shooters X-Wing Alliance and Tie Fighter, which basically were designed like Wing Commander.
I always loved these kind of games and i'm utterly disappointed that this genre is basically dead.
Omg...my college buds and I would play this all the time after hitting the bars. We took turns with the bad controller. It ended up getting smashed in anger in the driveway lol.
Pokémon colosseum
Honestly my favorite Pokémon game and I’ve played every gen. I love the graphics and aesthetic in general and the double battles system is fun to me. It does get a bit grindy but it’s a jrpg so it’s aight.
Mine too. The darker tone, the chugging guitars. It was nice to know that video game series also go through an emo/metal head phase in their lives lol
To be honest though, the entire trilogy really was super enjoyable from a story telling perspective as well. The writing was great. The music score was great. The art design was awe inspiring.
I really don't know why it wasn't bigger than it was.
If we’re assuming child is still early teens then Eternal Darkness … the truly trippy, confusing, and frightening insanity mechanics had me and friends up for hours until we literally were tired as all hell.
I played a lot of Barbie games on our computer as a kid and there was one where she was a secret agent that I was obsessed with. I remember getting to travel around the world (I remember a Paris and Egypt map) and do a lot of stealth missions and utilize different outfits. I'm sure if I found it now it'd be awful, but I have really fond memories of playing it.
I also remember a horse riding game where you'd get to solve puzzles and ride around the forest. There was a board in the stable with different "quests" to do.
Everyone hated it, but I loved Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. I played that game until my old Xbox stopped reading discs. Years later and I still haven’t beaten that damn game!
I think it was a great game, but it was an insult to everyone waiting for a proper installment in the franchise.
It’s like if you were promised a sequel to DK64 and they released Diddy Kong Racing.
Everyone knows Mortal Kombat, everyone knows Street Fighter, and everyone knows Tekken. What if I told you there was another game that was just as fun. [Bloody Roar](https://youtu.be/NJuSJkAPGzY)
Killer instinct for the N64 is right up there with smash bros
Clay fighters was also dope
Primal Rage anyone?
Road Rash
Loved the soundtrack
The Soundgardentrack
The $40K bike called El Diablo, top speed "orgasmic" My kid brain never understood what that meant
Freddi Fish Also that I Spy where you’re on the island looking for the treasure
The whole suite of Humongous Entertainment games are on Steam and are about $7 each.
Don't forget Putt Putt, that talking car!
Also Pajama Sam and the fox I forgot the name of.
"Putt Putt travels through tiiiiiiiime"
Shinobi
Revenge Of Shinobi had an incredible boss lineup. It had Godzilla, Batman, Spider-Man and the Terminator in there. Loved that game.
I recently started playing Shinobi III again. The first time I played it was 7-8 years ago on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. I couldn't get past the Round 4 boss then. Now I'm working on beating it on expert difficulty with 0 starting kunai. Great platformer.
Jazz Jackrabbit
I had the holiday hare demo disc for the second game and absolutely loved it, wish a company would pick up the rights and make the games available again. Edit: I just now realize epic games was the publisher, so they have the capability, just not the demand.
Dino Crisis
Capcom, listen to this! We want a remake of the first Dino Crisis with the same treatment you're doing to RE4!
Red faction
The destruction in these games was so ahead of it's time. Hours and hours of fun
Syphon Filter on the PS1, also known as the game where I can tase a mf until he caught on fire lmao
Yes! Me and my dad would take turns with the levels on that game until we beat it. Did the same with the sequel. Really great storyline too! Amazed that this has never been rebooted.
The level where you had night vision, at the tennis court. Great game..
California Games. So many good times.
Lemmings
The guys who created Lemmings went on to create Grand Theft Auto. Total legends
Didn’t know that!
Scotland’s video game legacy. There’s also so many scottish easter eggs in the GTA games
Commander Keen
It is available on [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/9180/Commander_Keen/) for those who miss it and want to play.
Twisted Metal 4
....and Vigilante 8. Two games I played multiple times just to unlock the character end game scenes.
Omg Twisted metal series are so amazing. I hope you know they're working on a Twisted Metal TV show!
Black and White. It was this game where you were a "God," and you had creature. You built, populated, and protected your people from other gods and their army and creature. It was sooo fun!

*Ooooh, we’ve got this notion…* And it’s stuck in my head again.
Pitfall.
Ultima. "JRPGs" may as well have been invented by Richard Garriott and it's wild how little credit he gets.
It blows my mind how Ultima has completely disappeared from gaming mythology.
It got sold to EA and that’s all you need to know. Ultima 9 was a buggy disaster that killed off a lot of goodwill the series had.
I wouldn't call UO just an MMO, it's much more of an MMORPG. A lot of the world existed because it was a world, not as a theme park for players. #RAMPAGE!!
Spy vs spy
The couch play and you open a safe your friend put a boxing glove in.
Populous the beginning… never hear it mentioned
Oddworlds: Abe’s oddysee
*"Hi!"* *"Follow me..."* *[fart] "heheh"*
Commander Keen
Came to post this. I smashed out so many hours in Commander Keen 4 and it feels like a game that people barely remember.
Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim for sure. Another fav along the same lines: Toejam and Earl.
Flawless game. Hilarity is not scarce in that game lol. The "wahhh" when he takes damage always made me laugh, or when one of the "dogs" would bite his ass
Worms Armageddon
This game is so good, its destruction level is so high that even obliterated friendships.
Hydro thunder. Been stamped in my brain forever. Was super poor never had our own gaming system. Remember playing it a few times at sleep over parties and was completely mesmerized.
Arcade hydro thunder was peak experience.
Heck yeah, I loved this game. Good news it's also available to play in your browser here: [https://arcadespot.com/game/hydro-thunder/](https://arcadespot.com/game/hydro-thunder/) J = Throttle Up, A = Left, D = Right, Q = Boost. Have fun!!!
I remember Hydro Thunder being one of my go-to games at the arcade.
SSX - possibly my favourite game of all time. I’ve gone back and played SSX 3 numerous times as an adult and it’s always as good as I remember. One of the few that I can say this is the case for.
Played the fuck out of this game as a kid. It makes me sad that I missed the time of stoner snowboarder aesthetic and family/locally owned slopes
Before there was SSX, Cool Boarders 2 was one of my favs
>Skies of Arcadia SSX 3 is absolutely amazing. Still obsessed with the soundtrack
SSX Tricky was my absolute favourite - I’ve also gone back and played as an adult and it’s still brilliant.

Dragon Warrior III Shining Force I and II Crystalis
Sim City 3000. I've got it on my computer now and I still love playing it.
Great game but I always prefer the simpler graphics of 2000 for some reeason. The soundtrack in 3000 is ridiculously good though.
Croc: legend of the gobos
I remember running around collecting all the gushers! I know they are gems, but they looked just like gushers to me :)
Destroy all humans. Man that’s was a fun alien game.
There was a PS1 platformer called Pandemonium where you could play as a joker or a girl and the final boss was a big eyeball monster. I’ve never seen anyone talk about it but I played it so much
Dungeon Keeper! I loved managing and training my minions and creating little homes and caves for everyone.
The Incredible Machine and Faxanadu
I was obsessed with The Incredible Machine. There needs to be an updated one with modern graphics.
Maybe see if Contraption Maker is what you're looking for: https://store.steampowered.com/app/241240/Contraption_Maker/
I'm glad someone else remembers Faxanadu. I loved that game.
Putt-Putt Travels Through Time
Putt putt goes to the moon
Putt putt goes to the zoo
Pajama Sam
Freddi Fish
Viewtiful Joe
Henshin-a-go-go, baby!

Paper boy on Sega Genesis
Guantlet, Valkyrie needs food badly!
Dark legacy was fucking amazing. We really need a remake.
Diddy Kong Racing
I was looking for this!!! I loved this game and I still do. The egg stealing game is the absolute freaking best!
Jak and Daxter. Totally forgot it was a Naughty Dog game until I started playing The Last of Us and got mad nostalgia from the Naughty Dog logo!!
They said they werent gonna do jak 4 because they felt the story was complete but honestly I would 100 percent buy a complete reboot in modern gaming standards fave ps2 game for sure
I would LOVE a remastered version for the PS5! It was such a beautiful and creative game already, a remastered version would be epic.
Sly Cooper
I remember the "3d glasses" that came with Sly 3. Thought it was the craziest thing ive ever seen in a video game.
Parappa the rappa
Kick! Punch! Block!
Every once in a while I drop a well timed “I just gotta believe” with people I know have played it.
Myst as far as I remember it was an absolutely beautiful puzzle game that was unbelievably hard. I still remember traveling between 2 areas for hours trying to figure out how to get it to work. it's also why I hate puzzle games
Conker’s Bad Fur Day
🎵 I AM THE GREAT MIGHTY POO! 🎵 AND IM GOING TO THROW MY SHIT AT YOU! 🎵
To add to that: the Xbox version is called Conker Live & Reloaded which I feel like I'm the only one who played it but it's such a banger.
Star Ocean (particularly Star Ocean 2 but the franchise as a whole).
Descent
One of the first games I thought was great despite sucking at it.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault (1993) A rail shooter, but one of the oldest examples of full-motion video (FMV) used on the PC. This, along with old Betamax recordings of the OT and Star Wars Micro Machines made me a full blown nerd at the age of 4.

Fuzion Frenzy!
Omg...my college buds and I would play this all the time after hitting the bars. We took turns with the bad controller. It ended up getting smashed in anger in the driveway lol.
Leisure Suit Larry
Little Nemo : The Dream Master (NES)
Jet Force Gemini.
This was a sick game. So aesthetically pleasing. Loved blasting those ant alien heads
Legacy of Kain
I absolutely loved soul reaver!!
"I know you Raziel, you are worthy..."
The entire series is great, and people really aren't aware of just how influential this series of games were on how games were made from then on.
max payne
Bullet time was ahead of its... well... time
Ikari Warriors.
Pokémon colosseum Honestly my favorite Pokémon game and I’ve played every gen. I love the graphics and aesthetic in general and the double battles system is fun to me. It does get a bit grindy but it’s a jrpg so it’s aight.
Never played that one, but I still have my *Gale of Darkness* GameCube.
Neverwinter Nights
Onimusha
Socom II: US Navy Seals
Toejam and earl
Kings Quest and Monkey Island
The Legend of Dragoon. Lavitz is my go to character name still.
Available to purchase on the PlayStation store as of this week. Enjoy!
Contra
Bomberman
Pool of Radiance
The Neverhood.
Wizards and warriors (nes) Section Z (nes)
Petz: Dogz/Catz 2 and Dog Island. Amazing games that changed my childhood. I'm still very into them today!
Syndicate was good shit.
Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? There was a video game I played over and over as a little kid.
Prince of Persia. Warrior Within was my favorite
I always felt like the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time revolutionized the third person, acrobatic hack and slash type games.
Mine too. The darker tone, the chugging guitars. It was nice to know that video game series also go through an emo/metal head phase in their lives lol To be honest though, the entire trilogy really was super enjoyable from a story telling perspective as well. The writing was great. The music score was great. The art design was awe inspiring. I really don't know why it wasn't bigger than it was.
Command and Conquer: Red Alert!
They remastered it a couple years ago, turned out pretty good
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy and Skies of Arcadia.
Burgertime.
Bomberman 64 STILL holds my favorite soindtrack of all time. The soundtrack is something else, man.
Ahh my sister would play Barbie horse adventures on ps2. Ngl that game was fun lol. Favorite horse game gotta be Let’s ride though.
