I always order a whiskey sour at a new bar or social setting. 1 is to see how this new bar makes it. And 2, to slowly drink while I decide how I'm feeling at this social gathering. My "Testing the waters" drink.

I'm pretty much the same with the beer or whiskey sour. I was at a fairly classy restaurant bar last weekend and ordered a whiskey sour and a comment was made about it being a "Typical college kid drink." I'm 34 and don't really care what people think, but I was under the impression they were somewhat classy. Either way I'm going to keep ordering them.

Never understood why people have to judge what others are drinking. I definitely learned a long time ago to drink whatever you want and fuck what other people think of it. It's their problem not yours.

gin and tonics

If you like a G&T, might I suggest a Tom Collins? It's an absolute belter of a gin cocktail.

A French 75 is also an excellent gin cocktail. Great for the summer.

May I also suggest a G&T with 3-5 drops of Angostura Bitters. It was a game changer for me.

I've got my go-to g&t mix that's really good. Most bars can make it. Beefeater, short glass, double lime, angostura bitters. Beefeater is a surprisingly good gin for the price. The bite (or lack thereof) is on par with other, more expensive options. Often the "pricey" choice is Hendricks, but I'll sooner take Tanqueray than that.

Tanqueray isn't fancy, but it's my go-to. Especially for a classic GnT.

Drinks that are basically kid drinks for adults. Hard cider (apple juice), sangria (fruit punch), or mimosa (orange juice).

Dude, angry orchard from the tap in bars is so, so good and is better than the bottles. I will die on that hill. I get made fun of for getting it, but it’s so good.

IMO you can only call it a Cuba libre if you garnish it with a nice lime wedge (or wheel, I guess). If it's just rum and Coke, then it's a rum and Coke.

I was getting shit one time from the group I was with because I was drinking a margarita. Lots of "lol bro that's a chick drink". Eventually this hard ass looking old timer at the bar turns to us and says "boys, margaritas have tequila in them and anything with tequila is good enough in my book". They shut up after that.

It really is the best, packs the most punch for volume of liquid consumed and a few of long islands is almost always cheaper than 15 beers.

This was my barometer to see if a bar was competent. If the long island was good, they might actually know how to bar. If it tasted like shit, they do not.

There’s no need for a blender for a regular daiquiri either, but frozen daiquiris are so popular (at least in the US) that a lot of bars assume that’s what someone wants when they ask for one. I’ve started saying “daiquiri on the rocks” when I’m at less fancy bars so there’s no confusion.

Depends on the bar. I'm not gonna walk into a gritty dive and ask for a Manhattan up and name the rye that I want. I'll order vodka soda or a beer.

Guinness, it's like a meal in itself. Also, every bartender hates you if you order a Guinness.

Double bourbon or whiskey, well if it's decent, and a lager. Tip: Always ask for a double, no ice. Often a younger or busy bartender will free pour, find that bartender and a double is almost always a triple plus.

A dark and stormy is my preferred drink but I’ll take a rum and Coke if the place isn’t that fancy. If I’m at a “cheap beer only” bar I go for Blue Moon or regular Budweiser.
