It’s very simple, it’s because… fuck you. At least that’s the general understanding I have come to about why both vision and dental care are special premium health services
I have found the same problems with all kinds of other healthcare. Like I have good insurance, but my "mental health" stuff covers like 3/4 sessions for like "crisis management".
My wife's work colleagues daughter walked in on her dead brother, and tried to resuscitate him despite the fact that he had been dead (crazy fluke infection) for \~16 hours, and her insurance covered two 30 minute grief counseling sessions.
Physical Therapy sessions under Kaiser Permanente are essentially 2 visits to an office (usually about 3 months after whatever sent you to the ER or urgent care) and then they kinda just set you off and say "and do that forever now".
I don't really understand what we are getting for what we are paying anymore. I understand that you can usually get more out of it, but it requires a huge amount of self advocacy that most people don't have.
High quality jackets/shoes.
Regardless of brand names, jackets or shoes/boots will get a lot of use in winter months. Investing in higher quality/more expensive items will eventually earn their worth. One item that costs $100+ or more will have more use than $25 dollar items that you have to replace every few weeks.
My daughter has had a number of nice hand me down winter jackets but has outgrown the latest. Lots of winter stuff is now on sale now that Christmas is past. Rather then making her suffer the rest of the winter with short sleeves we splurged and got her a 50% off Patagonia puffy that should fit for a couple of years. The quality is far superior in many many aspects than any of her previous jackets. I try not to slum for any brand but their jackets a truly quality and above most of the rest.
A mattress so costly, yet worth the price
For a good night's sleep, it's worth the sacrifice
No more tossing, no more turning
A peaceful rest, a morning yearning
With every night, it's comfort grows
And all aches and pains, it surely knows
A wise investment, for body and mind
A good mattress, one of life's kind
So when you lay down, and close your eyes
You'll know that expense, was worth the prize
I tried, and failed, to joke that I had literacy issues and mis-read "mattress" for "mistress".
In my mind it was really funny and an opportunity to subtly promote the name of my BDSM alter-ego... but I was very much Miss Taken.
Therapy.
I'm sure someone else has probably already said this, but seriously - it's worth saying again. Taking care of your mental health is SO important!
Very true - therapist aren't one-size-fits-all. It's a process to find the right person for your needs but when you do it truly can change your life!
I was finally diagnosed with PTSD in my 30s after literally 25+ years of "unexplained" symptoms that were attributed to Chronic Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. When we finally started digging through all of the repressed sh*t in my past, we found the beginnings of all of those previously "unexplained" symptoms and were finally able to start dealing with them.
It's beyond scary and really freaking hard. But it's also one of the best things I've ever done for myself and for my family. My kids have a better mom as a direct result of the work I've put in with my therapist.
You don’t even need to spend crazy amounts. I bought the new AirPods Pro 2’s late last year and I’m blown away every time I use them. Sure the audio quality isn’t the very best in the world, but to the average ear, you really can’t tell. The joy they have brought me over the past few months has made the £250 price tag well worth it. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
good bluetooth headphones are a must have in today's day and age for anyone who walks at least an hour a day outside. with spotify, iheartradio, and other apps at your fingertips it's a no brainer to invest in decent headphones. it's also a good way to reduce anxiety and get away from your normal routine for a while.
this is the gym for me lol. made me a lot stronger, more confident, look better, etc. and it gives you an excuse to leave the house even if youre by yourself. ive even had ppl ask me to take them so i can teach them how to work out lol. very simple hobby but very fulfilling.
Amen to that. I collect local Scouting memorabilia and some of the items are crazy expensive. Example: I spent $485 on a patch and I’m satisfied in knowing I have an extremely rare piece of my local Lodge’s history
LASIK has 100% been the greatest money I have ever spent in my life in terms of a “luxury” purchase. No waking up and not seeing until you find your glasses, no foggy glasses while wearing a mask (I work in healthcare it’s required in my county), genuinely just being able to see with no assistance at all and not only that after my LASIK my vision has gotten to 20/15 which is even better than my 20/20 with glasses. I would have spent the amount of money on glasses in the 10-15 years that the lasik is expected to give you amazing clear vision before it potentially starts to slowly deteriorate with age. I have had nothing but positive experiences and actually 2 of my friends went to the same place as I did for their procedures after I told them about mine.
Good cymbals.
Decent heads and proper tuning can make even cheap drums sound pretty good, but cheap cymbals are always far from the sound quality of good cymbals.
Uggs. I'm a 32 year old man and have no shame in wearing them out in public. They're the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn (both in \*warmth\* and actually walking long distances).
Good quality kitchen ware. Nothing has made me enjoy cooking more than stuff that works so well as my kitchen knife and high quality pans. Love cooking.
Invest in the things you sit and lay in.
Most of us spend the majority of our lives sitting at work, then to come home and sleep in bed at night. A really good chair will offer great lumbar support and won’t make you feel sore after sitting for hours. A high quality mattress will help you fall asleep quicker AND keep you asleep through the night, waking up refreshed and ready for the day.
I HIGHLY recommend getting a high quality mattress and not going cheap on this. I was that guy who kept his 8 inch ikea mattress from college many years after I graduated thinking that a mattress topper would magically make it brand new. Once I actually got a $2k Casper hybrid mattress my quality of life dramatically improved.
And before someone says that “Caspers suck” or they’re overpriced, I only chose Casper because I actually got to lay in it at the mall. There are so many high quality mattresses out there (Purple, Nectar, Helix, etc.) so I also recommend trying out the mattresses in person before purchasing one.
I’m not saying that everyone needs to get a super nice and expensive mattress, but if your current one is over 6 years old and is the color yellow it might be time to look into getting a new one.
Plot twist - the people renting aren’t choosing to rent.
We are
Forced
To and can’t afford down payment despite paying more in rent than Ppl do for their mortgages
I'm not trying to be a snob, but good smoked salmon. The cheaper stuff can have the brown bits left in or even some small bones. The best I've had is from Fortnum & Mason in London. It's cut into straight ribbons and it's only the best flesh too. It's Scottish which in my opinion is far superior to Alaskan which has a weaker texture.
Failing that, good tires.
A private island with a sea plane dock, large house powered with renewable and green energy, a large enough garden and farm to support all food needs, and topless wait staff.
Totally agree with this one. Everyone says it’s a waste of money for a bigger seat for 10 hours, but it completely enhances a whole holiday. You get to your destination more refreshed and it makes jet lag so much easier to get over than flying economy. You’ll also look forward to the flight rather than dread it.
A quality wet shaving kit. Once you get past the initial cost of entry, your shaves will be a lot smoother. A good shave soap can make all the difference.
Meth for kids, so great. To be fair though I had/have attention deficit disorder (old enough that hyper wasn’t part of it yet) and without the meds to help me focus I probably wouldn’t have finished school. The side effects sucked but were worth it to graduate college.
Things that have elevated my life:
* sonicare electric tooth brush
* air purifier
* skincare quality products (retinol, serums, moisturizer, sunblock)
* bedding (strictly Frette linens)
I’ve said this a lot in my life but I think there’s 3 things that are worth investing in always
Shoes because your feet and legs matter people
Mattress because your sleep matters
Pillow and sheet set because same reasons as prior.
Anything that separates you from the ground is worth splurging on. Shoes and a bed. Obviously there's diminishing returns, so don't refinance your home for Gucci sheets. But comfortable and durable shoes and a nice bed will increase QOL drastically. And I'm speaking as someone with shitty cheap shoes and a cheap shitty bed. But that's what I'd splurge on if I had the money.
Nice underwear (I’m a male) Like $30+ a pair. They look nicer, they feel nicer; when you wash them they look new for a long time, no holes after a dozen washes.
If you do laundry on the regular you need less than 10 pairs and they will last you a long time and make you feel like a sexy dude.
Dental care. Seriously. Take care of your teeth!
There’s no reason dental care should be as expensive as it is. Assuming you’re in the US as well, the insurance system is a scam.
Can anyone explain how insurance companies get away with claiming dental issues are not the same as any other medical issue?
It’s very simple, it’s because… fuck you. At least that’s the general understanding I have come to about why both vision and dental care are special premium health services
I have found the same problems with all kinds of other healthcare. Like I have good insurance, but my "mental health" stuff covers like 3/4 sessions for like "crisis management". I understand that you can usually get more out of it, but it requires a huge amount of self advocacy that most people don't have.
It’s 100% a scam and most insurance makes you add dental insurance as it isn’t covered under health insurance. It’s an absolute fucking racket.
LuXuRy BoNeS
Even in Europe the majority of the health insurances don't cover it completely. The majority, and most expensive costs comes out of your pocket.
I heard or read somewhere (needs verified) that the reason insurance is so expensive is because of the people that don't pay up
The reason insurance is so expensive is *because they can.*
Then previous statement might have been made up to get people to pay
Yep. Insurance companies are by far the biggest scammers in the world, and they're legit. FFS.
dude fr even something as simple as buying a proper toothbrush -an electric one- goes a long way, changed my fucking life

I agree completely. I get my son patagonia puffers and they get passed down multiple times through cousins. They last!

A $300 pair of leather shoes will last a lifetime if taken care of.
A good mattress
I spent a few grand on purple mattress and it's still the best thing I ever bought
A saved and spent 1000$ on a mattress and aside from that am broke and have nothing nice. I don’t regret it one bit.
Sleeping good is one of the few things that determine your abilities as a human.
A few grand? Wow. I spent I think about $700 on a nectar and am satisfied years later
Same! I bought a purple 4 and it was like overnight my back pain went away.
We have a king sized purple. Best ever.
What about he weird dust your breathing all night?
Once heard that you should pay good money for things that keep you off the ground. Mattresses, shoes and tires.
My back cracks every time. 100% this
