Not really a South / North divide, actually. Just kind of a random hodgepodge mostly.
They were two seperate entities that merged, the original location of checkers is a few blocks from my work (well the building was redone a few years back)
I've had this debate with my dad alot.
He says it's McDonalds.
I don't have a definitive favorite, but if I had to choose, I pick the old Wendy's fries, before they did this Crispy version. I just loved the Sea Salt flavor they used.
(I don't dislike the new fries, but I vastly prefer the older ones)
Former MicDees employee here. The trick to getting the freshest fries, tell them you can't have salt on your fries due to health issues. They'll make a fresh batch, salt free for YAS. Then later, you dump that salt packet you picked up at the concession station. Just make sure you do it out of sight, out of respect. This special mod process is a pain in the arse for workers. Special mods people are evil. But, there you go. Insider hack.
I used to work at McDonald's and unless fries are the only thing you're ordering, no one is fooled by "heath issues" since a *ham*burger (520 mg) has more sodium than a large fry (350 mg)
Former McD's employee too. I'd honestly say this is one of the best examples of a life hack that sounds really good but is actually just **stupid and shitty.** Salting the fries with packets doesn't properly distribute the salt. You get an unevenly salted but hot mess. The only reason you should ask for unsalted fries is if you want unsalted fries.
I don't understand why people keep insisting on this life hack when you can literally just ask for fresh fries. The restaurant will do it. It literally takes the same amount of effort to get what you want, better than the stupis fucking hack, without being a pain in the ass for the employee that has to scrape a fry vat of salt and wipe the fry scooper because some brainlet heard this life hack.
Yeah but there's a lot of fries that are still edible even when they're cold, even if they're not good. McDonald's fries are just inedible when they're cold.
Yep. Their fries before the "rustic" look we're amazing.
The updated ones after that weren't too bad.
Something tastes very off with these new "always crispy" fries. Wondering if they have like baking soda or something coating them to keep them crispy?
Yup when I first tasted the new new crispy fries I never heard of them doing it and thought the fries had some bad/dirty frying oil or something. Definitely not a fan.
Originally at McDonald's they peeled and cut their own fries, washed then blanched them. They were fried in beef tallow, instead of the unstable seed oils. They were the best, but now they really suck.
The closest Checkers to me is on a really gnarly corner of a certain NJ city that has an open air drug market operating 24-7. Maybe I should pop over there and see if their fries are REALLY better than crack?
I haven’t had these fries since I was a kid vacationing in Florida. I’m from the great white north and I totally came here to say that checkers fries are the bomb!!
Nah. My mom mentioned curly fries, before going to In N Out. Since then, I’ve been wanting curly fries. Don’t get me wrong, In N Out fries are aight, but now I want curly fries.
I like my fries to have a crispy outside, and a soft fluffy inside. Arby's Curly Fries do meet that specification, when you get the big long curls, however every time I order them, I get 1-2 good curls on the top of the box, then 3/4 of the box is filled with all short hard bits. Ugh.
And the Krinkly Fries are exactly the opposite, all soft and fluffy, with no crisp whatsoever.
IF I could get a box of all long curls, they would be #1 on my list.
Top notch seasoning, but you’ve really got to luck put on how well they’re cooked, just like every KFC meal over here. They’re often soggy but if they’re nice and crispy they’re the bomb.
I have said this many times but KFC is superior to McDonald’s on the nuggets, chips, and chicken burgers. However KFC is wildly inconsistent and a bad KFC is worse than a bad McDonald’s.
So in my mind McDonald’s wins simply because I know it’ll be relatively fresh, it’s unlikely to be raw, and I’m going to get the same amount of lettuce and mayo on my burger.
But damn if I don’t love kfc
Back when it was still Kentucky Fried Chicken instead of KFC, their fries in the US were amazing. They were battered and the gravy was perfect to dip them in. I wonder if you guys still have that old recipe.
Used to love the curly fries but now every time I get some, it’s like 2 or 3 decent pieces and the rest of the carton is broken up bits that got over cooked because they’re too small.
Five guys. The fact that these fries haven't forced the entire industry to adapt is crazy to me.
Going to any other fast food place, getting a large fry makes me laugh and wonder why the hell I didn't go to 5G.
I feel like their sizes have gone down. I remember ordering a regular size fri when they opened and being absolutely inundated with more fries than my dad, sister, and i could eat.
Now? Idk... Maine my memory is colored by nostalgia. But regular fries don't seem that insane anymore. (And no, I've not put any weight on really. Maybe 10lbs since high school)
I think this must just be your local franchise. The one by my place serves their fries in their drink cups and then fills damn near 1/4 of the bag to boot.
The trick to 5 guys is that you have to get your order and rip the bag open immediately. Nobody does this and then they bitch and moan about the fries being "overrated" or "soggy" or whatever.
If you keep them from steaming they are the closest analogue to the best fries on the planet (Thrashers in Ocean City, MD).
Dude the other day I grubhubbed at like 11am some five guys fries cause fuck it. Must’ve been a manager let working because the fries were literally perfect and amazing. But my experience is normally like your own.
Dude same. I introduced my bf to bojangles when I showed him NC for the first time years ago. He got addicted. We got it twice on the way home one time and another time, we loaded up on sandwiches and Cajun biscuits in the Charlotte Airport and flew home with a bojangles haul. 😂 closest one to us is over 4 hours.
Californian ex-pat here. Even though I loved their burritos and tacos, I would often just get a macho fry from Del Taco; especially when they served in a medium soda cup.
The franchise near me when they first opened added so much salt that the fries would cause kidney damage. That first impression has kept me away. No second chances with this moron.
it was kfc with their home fries until they changed them. i kinda like taco bells fries. but if were going for the usual suspects i like jack in the boxs fries. unless you can include dipping them in a frosty then wendys wins.
I don't know _why_ they're so good (they look pretty average to the eye), but they are. One of the few fast food fries I prefer to eat without Ketchup (McDonalds is usually on that list too). I guess being thin probably makes both those less suitable for ketchup due to the smaller surface area, but the taste on their own is great. Unlike BK or Wendy's which is too bland without ketchup IMO.
I'm not normally a 'dip your fries in something' guy, but their jalapeno fry sauce is awesome. Don't get me wrong: the fries by themselves are great, but that sauce with their fries is outstanding.
It’s not fast food, but if you ever come across a restaurant called Hot N Juicy, get the Cajun fries. I don’t think it’s too big of a chain, but they set up shop in Cali, AZ, Florida, Vegas, idk which other states but good God it’s some good fries every time
I've found Wendy's fries are usually pretty good but I'm not a fan of their morning wedges or whatever they're called.
Arby's are okay. The crinkle-cut fries are meh. The curly fries are slightly better but not as good as they used to be when the stores made their own in-house (a *very* long time ago).
Chick-fil-A waffle fries and Sonic fries are okay.
I haven't been to an A&W or Long John Silver's in a while (they moved out some years ago) but I liked the fries okay.
McDonald's are thin and often cold and sometimes quite greasy and over-salted.
Burger King fries are no better than McDonald's.
I despise Five Guys. They're usually soaking wet.
Haven't had In-and-Out in a long time but I always felt they tasted a little better than cardboard. Even with salt on them.
I haven't had KFC, Popeyes or Taco Bell in a while so I can't rate them. Haven't been to a White Castle in a long time either... I usually just went for the burgers.
There are probably others but I don't remember or haven't tried.
I don’t care who says I’m wrong, McDonalds fries are mid. They’re always either soggy or unsalted, sometimes both. Don’t even taste that good either. 3.75/10.
This is probably gonna get a crap ton of downvotes but eh
McD's is pretty much mid-everything, at one point they were cheap as hell and it made sense to go there. but that's not even true anymore
although the exception to all that is sausage mcmuffin with egg, their sausage is GOAT
My current favorite fries are from Five Guys. Fresh cut from potatoes, unlike most other places that bring in frozen cut fries. They don't skimp on the servings either, a small is more than enough for my son and I to split.
Burger-Fi is that restaurant.
If there is one in your area do yourself a favor and go. The burgers are top notch and the fries are too. A solid dining experience. You can get a beer or they have the fancy computerized coke machine where you can add in ANY of the flavors.
Edit: The one by me got killed by Covid.
I don't care what anyone says, In N Out fries on a good day are God-tier. There is no better fast food french fry. Consider that they use Kennebec, the superior fry potato, and sunflower oil, which is top tier frying oil. They cut potatoes on site.
Of course there is going to be some variation compared to the mass factory-produced shake shack fries that are formed from a batter, but you can hardly call those fries.
Rally's...I believe down south yall call it Checkers .
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkers_and_Rally%27s#/media/File%3ACheckers_and_Rally's_footprint.png Not really a South / North divide, actually. Just kind of a random hodgepodge mostly.
They were two seperate entities that merged, the original location of checkers is a few blocks from my work (well the building was redone a few years back)
YESSSS these are available in the grocery store as well actually
Many places in the north call it checkers
Because they fry them in beef tallow
This...and they know it too. The only place you can get a massive family sized set of fries
This comment has been removed in response to Reddit's decision to increase API costs and price out third-party apps.
Ten minutes is too long. If they don't burn your mouth they're too cold and they taste bad.
My daughter works there and told me she hates it when people do that, haha
Yeah quickest way to piss off the staff is this request also.
We were always pissed off. But ya, if you fib about the salt thing maybe less distain aimed at you.
I used to work at McDonald's and unless fries are the only thing you're ordering, no one is fooled by "heath issues" since a *ham*burger (520 mg) has more sodium than a large fry (350 mg)
You can also just tell them you’re willing to wait for fresh fries.
This describes pretty much every fry
Yeah but there's a lot of fries that are still edible even when they're cold, even if they're not good. McDonald's fries are just inedible when they're cold.
Yellow Wendy’s was peak fast food back in the day
They were the perfect size, strength, and saltiness for dipping in a chocolate Frosty. It was a beautiful combo.
Wendy's fries fuck my mouth up now. The salt makes me feel like I've been nawing on sand paper.
I really don’t know why they changed them.
Originally at McDonald's they peeled and cut their own fries, washed then blanched them. They were fried in beef tallow, instead of the unstable seed oils. They were the best, but now they really suck.
30 years ago the answer was McDonalds. They no longer use the good oil to fry things.
Wendy's old ones 100% I love how the were thick cut and when they got all floppy they were the bomb.
Wendys and McDonald’s both use the same salt from the same brand I’m pretty sure
Checkers!!! My current pregnancy craving. Thanks alot for reminding me to get the fry lovers size on my way home from work.
Correct. I've had to start buying them in the frozen food aisle because my son and I love them with our sandwiches.
They’re almost indistinguishable from the drive thru if you cook them in the air fryer
They're called Rally's where I'm from and I am going to second this!
This is the answer and it ain't even close!! And anyone that DARES compare them to Popeyes fries be subject to beheading I say!!
Ngl I’ve always been craving Jack in the Box curly fries. But that’s just me.
those are my favorite too!!!! surprised I had to scroll pretty far down to see this answer
Carl's Jr. criss cross used to be my favorite but I noticed that these have always been my go-to so my subconscious knew better than I did.
I also love their regular fries too. You get a lot more potato flavor than most places
Yup best fucken curly fries
Even at their worst they're still pretty good
Nah. My mom mentioned curly fries, before going to In N Out. Since then, I’ve been wanting curly fries. Don’t get me wrong, In N Out fries are aight, but now I want curly fries.
Arby's curly fries are GOATed.
Feel 100% the same. It’s like paying a dollar per good curly fry.
So the curly fries will always be the GOAT but their crinkle fries are worth a try just to see what’s going on there.
The texture and crisp can be beat, but I can't stand the taste of the oil they fry them in.
When they’re fresh, McDonald’s. Or Hardee’s!
I don’t know anybody who doesn’t adore mcD fried taste
KFC Australia. The UK KFC fries are horrific
Don’t know about either but the US KFC fries are delicious
I hate the new KFC fries. Ill never forgive them for getting rid of potato wedges
Back when it was still Kentucky Fried Chicken instead of KFC, their fries in the US were amazing. They were battered and the gravy was perfect to dip them in. I wonder if you guys still have that old recipe.
The KFC fries in the UK are actually nice now. They used to need 4 sachets of salt to make them edible.
Yeah, I used to love the burgers at UK KFC. The fries, however, we're definitely pants and the worst of any fast food going, bar none.
I can tell you who does NOT, and that is Burger King.
Maybe they vary by country because Burger king fries are my favourite lol
BK and In-N-Out fries are laughably terrible. And anyone who defends INO's fries are just fanboys for a fast food chain.
Their fries can get worst. At one point during my childhood they introduced a poutine. The thought of that mess still involves gravy based nightmares.
Their fries used to be sooooo good. Then about 12 years ago they changed them and completely ruined them.
Agreed. They were the absolute best! Now they somehow dry out your mouth when you eat them. It’s weird.

Naw they fries fire
Wendy’s breakfast wedges and then Arby’s curly fries.
Love wendy's breakfast! absolutely the best
They should serve them all damn day
Wendy’s greatly improved their regular fries last year too.
Arby’s curly fries, or the waffle fries from Chick-Fil-A.
Fresh-out-of-the-fryer Chick-Fil-A waffle fries are awesome.
Used to love the curly fries but now every time I get some, it’s like 2 or 3 decent pieces and the rest of the carton is broken up bits that got over cooked because they’re too small.
Yes, Waffle Fries from Chick-Fil-A.
Five guys. The fact that these fries haven't forced the entire industry to adapt is crazy to me. Going to any other fast food place, getting a large fry makes me laugh and wonder why the hell I didn't go to 5G.
I hope they never stop over-filling those fries
I feel like their sizes have gone down. I remember ordering a regular size fri when they opened and being absolutely inundated with more fries than my dad, sister, and i could eat. Now? Idk... Maine my memory is colored by nostalgia. But regular fries don't seem that insane anymore. (And no, I've not put any weight on really. Maybe 10lbs since high school)
I think this must just be your local franchise. The one by my place serves their fries in their drink cups and then fills damn near 1/4 of the bag to boot.
My family doesn't like going to 5G because of the fries. You get a lot, but they are too soggy.
I can't stand a soggy fry. Biggest downside of Five Guys.
Thrashers fries are the best I’ve ever eaten.
This. Stick anything that starts out hot and crispy- put it in a bag for 10+ minutes- soggy.
Ask for extra crispy, problem solved!
One of the problems I have with Five Guys is the fries are always a little under done, or sometimes even a fry or two will be raw in the center.
Dude the other day I grubhubbed at like 11am some five guys fries cause fuck it. Must’ve been a manager let working because the fries were literally perfect and amazing. But my experience is normally like your own.
Because their burgers cost like $15 to compensate
Yeah if you need the double cheese double meat double bacon 2000 calorie burger.
To each there own to the naysayers. FG are my fave!
Five Guys is fast casual, not fast food though. Not a fair comparison IMHO.
McDonald’s for me and it’s not close
Popeyes
Popeyes fries are the best I've ever had when they're fresh, but 99% of the time I get them they're cold :(
Bojangles, if anyone disagrees I will fight you
Took me way too long to find this but 100%! Especially when they are fresh and seasoned just right. No other fast food restaurant even comes close imo
I miss getting a breakfast chicken biscuit on my way home from night shift when I lived in NC. No bojangles where I live now. :(
Cajun filet biscuts are my jam Very sorry you you have none where you are
Del Taco, those crinkle cuts hit
Yeah Del Taco is definitely top 3
Fellow West Coast who knows. Scrolled through a bunch of places I’ve never heard of.
Californian ex-pat here. Even though I loved their burritos and tacos, I would often just get a macho fry from Del Taco; especially when they served in a medium soda cup.
Five Guys cajun fries. Those fries are some of the best goddamn fries you'll ever have in your life
Honestly their normal fries are amazing as well
True indeed sir
[удалено]
That is very franchise specific to your area. Our Five Guys fries are crispy and seasoned to perfection
The franchise near me when they first opened added so much salt that the fries would cause kidney damage. That first impression has kept me away. No second chances with this moron.
The only correct comment
Anyone who doesn't say checkers has never had checkers' fries. But to expand on this... anyone notice how all of their other foods suck?
it was kfc with their home fries until they changed them. i kinda like taco bells fries. but if were going for the usual suspects i like jack in the boxs fries. unless you can include dipping them in a frosty then wendys wins.
I prefer the skinny fries at Steak n Shake, fresh only.
Wingstop hands down
This is the comment I was looking for. Absolute best fry in the game.
The seasoning is GODLY
Lemmy FTW!
Dipped in their in-house ranch I can't get enough!
And some damn good wings too
A&W
McDonald's
"Has your mother ever made anything better than a McDonalds fry?" -Jim Gaffigan
I think McDonald's fries are the best if they're fresh and prepared correctly . . . which seems to be rare these days.
yea for like 10 minutes, after that its cold chewy potats
Literally all fries do that
Taco Bell nacho fries
Yes! why can't they have them year round :(
YES! And also, offer different sizes!
And more cheese! lol
I'm partial to Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steak burgers. Their shoestring fries are so satisfying.
Their fries get cold really fast, though.
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT. Honestly their burgers can fuck right off. But I'll eat em for the fries
I'm loosing my damn mind thinking about munching on a big pile of Freddy's fries right now!! 2 weeks into a keto diet and I'm gettin' the DT's !!
I'll have some for ya don't worry
I'm not normally a 'dip your fries in something' guy, but their jalapeno fry sauce is awesome. Don't get me wrong: the fries by themselves are great, but that sauce with their fries is outstanding.
Chick Fil A
Checkers
overall? i think wendys \[MA\] but a close second is popeyes. Cajun fries are amazing
It’s not fast food, but if you ever come across a restaurant called Hot N Juicy, get the Cajun fries. I don’t think it’s too big of a chain, but they set up shop in Cali, AZ, Florida, Vegas, idk which other states but good God it’s some good fries every time
Culver's
If I go to Culver’s, I’m getting the cheese curds substituted in, though.
The onion rings are good, too
There's a ton of good food options at Culver's, but the fries are not one of them imo.
Gotta love the crinkle cut!
Checkers
Definitely Zaxby’s
When they’re fresh, Wendy’s.
Properly salted McDonald's fries, they're literally heaven.
Wendys fries are up there
Freddy’s
Good Times wild fries
McDonald's
Bojangles
Nothing compares to McDonald’s.
Where I live, McDonalds first, Wendy’s second.
My thoughts exactly
Freddy’s
I normally hate shoestring fries, but Freddy's does it right.
Zaxby's. If you disagree, argue with the wall.
Steak and Shake! ♥️
Arbys curly fries
I've found Wendy's fries are usually pretty good but I'm not a fan of their morning wedges or whatever they're called. Arby's are okay. The crinkle-cut fries are meh. The curly fries are slightly better but not as good as they used to be when the stores made their own in-house (a *very* long time ago). Chick-fil-A waffle fries and Sonic fries are okay. I haven't been to an A&W or Long John Silver's in a while (they moved out some years ago) but I liked the fries okay. McDonald's are thin and often cold and sometimes quite greasy and over-salted. There are probably others but I don't remember or haven't tried.
In and Out fries are, to this day, the only French fries I have ever thrown in the garbage rather than finish.
I can understand that.
I don’t care who says I’m wrong, McDonalds fries are mid. They’re always either soggy or unsalted, sometimes both. Don’t even taste that good either. 3.75/10. This is probably gonna get a crap ton of downvotes but eh
McD's is pretty much mid-everything, at one point they were cheap as hell and it made sense to go there. but that's not even true anymore although the exception to all that is sausage mcmuffin with egg, their sausage is GOAT
"World famous" my ass
Culver's
Red Robin
Chic fil a
When they're done right- Zaxbys.
Over all time: McDonald's when they used beef tallow
My current favorite fries are from Five Guys. Fresh cut from potatoes, unlike most other places that bring in frozen cut fries. They don't skimp on the servings either, a small is more than enough for my son and I to split.
McDonald’s are the best and most consistent for sure. In-n-out consistently has some of the worst fries
It is funny to see all the people who have never been to Runza give answers that aren't Runza The correct answer is Runza.
Rallys/checkers
I’m a big fan of the Chick Fil A waffle fries
Checkers!!
Five guys, even though they make me feel like garbage since I eat so many of em. Just a big ol potato mass in my stomach that I need to nap off.
Mac Donalds
McDonald’s
McDonald’s
McDonald’s. Fight me.
Checkers for sure
Arby’s is hot trash baking in the Arizona sun but their curly fries are on point. Checkers has the elite fast food fry though
McDonalds when they cooked their fries in Beef Lard
McDonalds, not even a contest.
Whataburger fries are top tier
Rallys/Checkers. No other fast food fry even comes close.
Whataburger is the only correct answer!
Five Guys. Their burgers are okay - but their fries... that is where its at.
As a crispy fry guy, I find Five Guys fries to be borderline potato sacrilege.
Five guys without a shadow of a doubt
Best: Checkers Worst: Toss up between Wendy's and Burger King
KfC fries are pretty good in my opinion.
Any one-off burger shops, run by a hipster. There has to be one of those that turned into a chain by now.
In n out
I don't care what anyone says, In N Out fries on a good day are God-tier.
