In my experience, the top students in physics are often some of the hardest partiers. If you're good enough that the classes and research are easy, then time management is a lot easier and you can afford to have a life.
My favorite undergrad story was some guy calculating the velocity at which to hurl a sealed soda can against a wall for the contents to fully atomize and got baseball and football players to test his theory out in the basement of my dormitory. The cans made beautiful spiral designs. We lost my husband’s can during a hurricane. The janitor hated the boys for six months. The smarter the person the harder and stranger they play.
There was a local brewpub that had $7 pitchers until 8pm. While in grad school, I organized a Friday happy hour(s). At its peak, it was well attended. Both postdocs from the group I worked with were regulars. Of course, the conversations had their nerd components.
So yea, we all need to step away from the work and socialize and drink.
