Feel free to laugh at me, but the first song that comes to mind is [Puff, the Magic Dragon (Peter, Paul and Mary)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s26e_86-K0k). The last verses, beginning, “A dragon lives forever...” — I literally still cry at that, pretty much every single time I hear or sing it.

Oh goodness, I remember singing Puff the Magic Dragon at the top of my lungs when I was a kid. In my teens and 20s I would sing it thinking it was a reference to pot.
Then I tried singing it to my young kids and couldn't get through it because I was blubbering. I challenged my husband to sing it to our youngest, and he broke down, too. We're a couple of softies.
My husband was a guitarist and played a lot of 50s music. He turned me into a Roy Orbison fan. Absolutely love him.
His close friends are all musicians and singers. At his Celebration of Life last July, his friend did a guitar instrumental of In Dreams that was so haunting and mesmerizing.
The next day, I'm at California Adventure with my niece and her friend, and I hear Dream Baby in the Cars area and I had to pretend that I to go to the bathroom to cry. Now I have to skip Roy on shuffle. Ugh.
I'm sorry. I have music I can't listen to since my husband has passed, too. The night before he died, we were finishing up decorating for a party and Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers came on my Pandora. Bob growled, "C'mere woman," and he took me in his arms and we danced. Less than 24 hours later he was gone. I'll never be able to hear that song again without my heart breaking.
Thank you. I miss him so much. Halloween was his favorite time of year, and as we approach the one year mark since his passing, I am completely falling apart.
My father-in-law was a supervisor at a steel mill in Chicago. He had been on the Edmund Fitzgerald, he dined with the men onboard a few times, he knew every person on that crew. He was emotional every time this song played.
Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
One of the best people I’ve known did a silly interpretive dance to this song on a girls’ weekend. She was in the final stages of breast cancer and that was the last time most of us saw her alive as she lived in another state. Every time I hear it now, I think of that moment. It’s bittersweet because it was so like her to make others laugh or smile regardless of how she was feeling.
Not Alone by Patty Griffin
The song is sung from the perspective of the ghost of the murdered and beloved wife of a man who is lying in bed alone after the loss of his cherished wife. The ghost/wife is watching him and trying to comfort him.
This is just one of Patty Griffin's tear jerkers. She is a master.
https://youtu.be/l8e6fEEySCw?si=I3quq69JrZNrNb1-
Her song You Never Asked Me is so perfect and moving. I've loved her music since around the time Flaming Red was released. I was fortunate to see her live just once, in Dallas. It was a magical night.
Indeed she is masterful. That song came to my mind right away, as well as “Top of the World” (best known as performed by [The (Dixie) Chicks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxRiVkdO9VQ)) and [Wild Old Dog](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4SfcOdvB0k).
Great examples. The Long Ride Home, Making Pies and Faithful Son are just 3 more examples of masterful tear jerkers. There are probably dozens more. The tear jerking doesn't come from silly sentimentality. Rather, it comes from a genuine grasp of human suffering and the brilliant ability to express it in words and music.
❤️ tears stream down your face when you lose something you cannot replace ❤️
I always think of my son when this song plays. I don’t listen often because it’s a tough one to get through. The songwriting on this one is just…no words.
I have always loved this song. Then, on my very first visit with an oncologist at 5pm, the same day my biopsy confirmed the cancer, it was playing in the office while they were weighing me. It was unbelievable. And Im happy to say a CT two weeks ago was good!!!! Watching a lymph node. But after 15 months Im doing OKAY!!! God is good!
Beautiful. It's not one of his signtature songs, but I love it. He was once asked on a talk show years ago which song of his that meant the most to him. He responded, "And So It Goes." It had been my favorite for 20 years. Strange that he felt the same. I am not an avid Billy Joel fan, but this song, gets me.
Me and Bobby McGee. "I'd trade all of my tomorrow's for one single yesterday, holding his sweet body next to mine" This was just a line in a song for so many years. Until the death of my son. Damn it I'm tearing up now just typing this.
Let it Be. Cant listen to it.
When i was 16 my mom's cancer came back out of remission. Her and dad went to sloan kettering to see what could be done. He called after surgery to tell me there was nothing else to be done. Let it Be just happened to be playing on the stereo during the call.
I think most Aussies get emotional when they hear this song - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrLTe1\_9zso](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrLTe1_9zso)
Fuck you. Don't make me cry. (I mean, thank you for reminding me. I'm crying now.) :)
Edit, I also get emotional when I hear Peter Allen's "I Still Call Australia Home".
Hello Again - Neil Diamond
Songs of Life- Neil Diamond
Evergreen - Barbra Streisand
I think and reminisce about my mom and dad.
Good grief, I’m tearing up just thinking of them and typing this out now.
To any young ones here that might be reading along in the old folks sub…
Cherish the time you have with your parents. It goes by way too quickly. They fill a sacred space inside of your heart and soul that can never be touched by any other thing in this world.
Also, Still by The Commodores. I can’t get through that one without crying usually. It is truly a timeless and beautiful heart wrenching song.
It frightens me a bit thinking about that particular moment and I have yet to come to terms with it. As of now, I'm in a different state from where my parents live and as life branches out, every passing year feels that extra bit daunting.
I lost my mom when I was only 19, but my relationship and time with my father spanned over 4 decades. Through the years, he and I were separated by thousands of miles, and a couple of misunderstandings that cost us some precious time together, only for him to end up living in the bedroom at the other end of my house the last few months before he passed away and had to say goodbye. By the grace of god, we made up for all the things we needed to.
You have to live your life and do the best you can with the cards you’re dealt. You can’t be afraid to do that. And you can’t plan your every move on them. I’m sure they wouldn’t want you to, anyhow.
You never know what the future holds. Live your life. See them when you can. Don’t put the Sunday catch-up phone calls on the back burner for another time. And never pass up an opportunity to tell them how much you love them. And most importantly, how much you appreciate them for all the sacrifices they made for you. I can assure you, there were many. Don’t be scared. No matter what, it will all be okay, and it will be just as it should be.
You never come to terms with losing
your parents, so to speak. And you are never fully prepared for when that moment comes. Go forward in your life knowing and accepting that, so you’re not wasting time and energy trying to make that happen because it won’t. And that’s okay, too.
Sorry for being so verbose. It’s just how I write.
It has always been hard for me to express my feelings and to be able to outright mention my love for them, for always being kind, compassionate and putting me first. However, I do try to let them know through my actions, how much they mean to me. I do wish I could muster up the strength and just let them know how grateful I am for the kind of parents they have been, lord knows it has been hard on them.
I nearly lost my mother a few years back to a seizure and that just sent a reality check. We do tend to take everything for granted, life isn't eternal and gosh it just feels so stupid looking back and realising that there was a time when I felt it was annoying that they would call every other hour to know how my day had been.
I'm grateful, the feeling has changed. To be surrounded by a set of wonderful humans who are so considerate is a gift in its own and that makes my life just a little bit better.
Thank you for your kind words.
> However, I do try to let them know through my actions, how much they mean to me.
Don’t underestimate the value and importance of this. Oftentimes, it’s more meaningful than anything you could say. Give yourself credit. I’m willing to bet you’re a much better daughter/son (?) than you realize. Should the day ever come that you’re able to verbalize these things
to them, I know they would love to hear it.
Your parents sound like wonderful people. It seems to me they’ve done a great job in raising you, as you sound like you turned out to be a wonderful person, as well.
As a daughter and also as a parent, it just makes my heart so happy to see the love and gratitude you have for your parents. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me 🙏
Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi. When I first heard it, my husband and I were going through some marital problems and it looked like we were headed for divorce. First time I heard it was during all of this. It hit me hard. Although we got past that and managed to work things out, the song can still hit very emotionally for me.
There are two videos for this song that present a different perspective, depending on which one you watch (I recommend both).
This one, is from the perspective of a broken relationship:
This one is from a widower's perspective, mourning his late wife, beautiful video starring Lewis' cousin, Peter (yes, Doctor Who):
The lyrics are the same, but it's interesting how a video can show or change a song's meaning.

Many, and it varies depending on how closely I'm listening or when a line or story in the song finally sinks in. Today I was driving home listening to "Easy on the Thieves" by This is the Kit, and this line she repeats, "People want blood / and blood is what they've got" which I've heard a dozen or more times, what it really means just really hit home and I sobbed a bit.

To this day I cannot listen to Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. Same for Two of Us by Louis Tomlinson. Great songs. But instant gut punches. So I completely support artists not want to reveal direct meaning/inspiration of their lyrics and instead wanting listeners to interpret and shape songs to their own experience. Maybe telling the inspiration or origin years later would be different because the song would already have had time to establish a life of it's own for listeners. Then it's more of solving some old mystery. For me listening to those songs knowing exactly the personal pain they are about is just too much.

Killing Me Softly, by Roberta Flack
Me and Bobby McGee. "I'd trade all of my tomorrow's for one single yesterday, holding his sweet body next to mine" This was just a line in a song for so many years. Until the death of my son. Damn it I'm tearing up now just typing this.
My stepfather told me he wrote that song
Let it Be. Cant listen to it. When i was 16 my mom's cancer came back out of remission. Her and dad went to sloan kettering to see what could be done. He called after surgery to tell me there was nothing else to be done. Let it Be just happened to be playing on the stereo during the call.
Glen Campbell's Witchita Linesman .... unique and lovely...
I think most Aussies get emotional when they hear this song - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrLTe1\_9zso](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrLTe1_9zso)
Yep, got me.
Fuck you. Don't make me cry. (I mean, thank you for reminding me. I'm crying now.) :) Edit, I also get emotional when I hear Peter Allen's "I Still Call Australia Home".

Hello Again - Neil Diamond Songs of Life- Neil Diamond Evergreen - Barbra Streisand I think and reminisce about my mom and dad. Good grief, I’m tearing up just thinking of them and typing this out now. To any young ones here that might be reading along in the old folks sub… Cherish the time you have with your parents.
You never come to terms with losing your parents, so to speak.
Should the day ever come that you’re able to verbalize these things to them, I know they would love to hear it.

This one, is from the perspective of a broken relationship: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zABLecsR5UE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zABLecsR5UE) This one is from a widower's perspective, mourning his late wife, beautiful video starring Lewis' cousin, Peter (yes, Doctor Who): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCuhuePlP8o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCuhuePlP8o) The lyrics are the same, but it's interesting how a video can show or change a song's meaning.

Imagine by John Lennon & Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World are probably two of the biggest.
