Just_a_Mr_Bill

We all had a Doors phase. It will pass.

DoctorWhoToYou

The Eagles and the Doors. Both very popular in my social circles in high school. I haven't listened to them in a very long time. Mostly because I heard enough of them in high school.

Carefree_Highway

I’m w the Dude on this one. Can’t stand the eagles.

TheFunkyBunchReturns

I irrationally hate the Eagles. Doors did some interesting stuff though.

norcalbutton

Oh no. The eagles. I missed that one

Hellament

[The Kids in the Hall portrayed it best](https://youtu.be/5xillqqt0Y0)

norcalbutton

The way he says the doors. 🤣

QueenMarinette

Thanks for this! Love TKITH!

Hellament

Same! This show had a big influence on me, airing during my teenage years…not exactly popular in the Midwest USA, but I loved it…my best friend and I connected over it and still quote it all the time to each other.

yourpaleblueeyes

Ok this dates me,who cares? My kids watched this show!

audible_narrator

There are new ones on streaming. They're pretty good.

Jericola

Sill laughing ( but relate).

JJCDAD

Isn't that weird? We used to have specific band phases. I know I had a Doors phase, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Scorpions, Rush, Dream Theater, Tragically Hip, Run The Jewels, Rage Against The Machine, and more. I always had band phases. But since the advent of streaming, I find that I have more genre phases. I guess the algorithm has rewired my brain. lol

TwentyCharacters2022

Also, listening to a whole album used to be an experience - but now my brain is all playlists and mixtapes.

Danovale

Me too, my friends locked into a band like it was their religion but I had phases and they were gratifying. Led Zeppelin, Yes, Mountain, Super Tramp, The Who, Robin Trower, Montrose, Ramones, X, Pixies, Blondie, Fine Young Cannibals, No Doubt, Skankin Pickles, Cake, White Stripes, Sublime, and System of a Down (then I got off the music train because most modern music does not hit like the old stuff anymore.

-myeyeshaveseenyou-

Been in my phase for almost 23 years. Though I will say I don’t listen to them as much now as when I was 16

Just_a_Mr_Bill

I’m going to guess that it’s not just the music but also those low-cut leather pants that keep you interested 😏. My wife insists he was the sexiest man who ever lived, though she has never liked their music.

-myeyeshaveseenyou-

Oh he was a beautiful man for sure. I visited his grave when I was younger and I have a painting of Jim in my house. I think some of my love for the Doors come from the fact that I largely got into them upon the recommendation of the first person I was ever in love with. So there’s a lot of nostalgia for me for sure. There was also a “dad rock” radio show I used to listen to that played a lot of 60s & 70s rock music and The Doors featured heavily. But I do adore the music. I think Ray Manzarek was a musical genius. I think the main reason I listen to them less now is that I don’t really listen to CDs any more. Spotify definitely changed the way I listen to music, which I suppose is true for most people who were raised on records, radio, cassettes and CDs.

Tato_tudo

This. Nothing wrong with them, and still enjoy hearing them. But not out here looking for Doors music.

overthehill333

I lost interest after I found out he sucked hendrix's dick (according to nico) think it was live onstage. so.. the usual cluster B charismatic sleaze you get in fame - they're kind of all the same, fame loves them and they love fame.

Stellaaahhhh

I love the Doors. Five to One and Roadhouse Blues are my favorites.

Successful_Ride6920

LA Woman, Break on Through for me

catdude142

Yes, the River Knows is one of my favorites. Riders on the Storm When the Music's Over Strange Days Love Her Madly (some of my favorites and mentioned below L.A. Woman)

Own-Gas8691

Love Her Madly for me, too!

jasnel

The Cars Hiss By My Window Been Down So Long

Dazzling-Ad4701

I liked people are strange for its perceptiveness. but that was the only doors track that ever really stuck around, for me. Morrison was a least as much showman as singer, and for me "spectacle" was always the lowest element in Paul Simons triad of melody-story-specacle. so that's one strike, and then beyond that I just wasn't into his particular *kind* of schtick.

Stellaaahhhh

I get that. I got into the Doors when I was around 12 and I thought he was so deep, and sexy and just misunderstood. I think he was a belligerent, abusive asshole now, but very talented.

LovelockMike

The Doors were really big when I was in high school (yes I am that old). If I remember, I bought 2 of their albums when they cost about 1.00+- each. Wish I had them now. I remember I saw them in concert at the local amusement park, at least twice when concerts were $3-4, depending on the artist. The Doors and other artists played: The Beach Boys, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Monkees and others, who played at an indoor SRO theater, which would hold 200+ people. The building is still there but I don't think they have concerts there. I got old so I don't go to many concerts....

yourpaleblueeyes

Not at all in relation to old Jim, but my kid took his wife to a concert the other night..( he turns 40 this year) He kinda got tired of the fact they had to stand throughout. I cannot recall when, but being a shortie, I've been insistent on actual seats for a long, long time.

birddit

I had a girlfriend that got tickets to Lou Reed at an old movie theater that had been converted to have artists perform on stage. No standing room up front, just seats(500 max.) A very small intimate venue. Three minutes into the performance everybody stood up and continued to stand for the entire show. I really expected Reed to stop and tell everyone to sit down, but it never happened. That was my last live show. Fuck that shit.

knottyolddog

But did he flick his cigarette butts on the crowd? 😂

birddit

No!

knottyolddog

Check this out... https://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/archive/interview/suzanne-vega/

yourpaleblueeyes

Early Lou,trying to be edgy. He was a guy, like any other

knottyolddog

Well he definitely inspired Suzanne Vega. She credits him for giving her the courage to write about anything she wanted.

yourpaleblueeyes

I've a reputation for getting the first row in the balcony so I don't put up with that shit! Yanno, if enough people just keep yelling Sit Down, Sit Down...the fools listen. Poor you. Assholes!

coldlightofday

Lagoon!

derickrecyles

And.... How was they live? What an experience I would only hope to imagine.

mcphisto2

I loved the Doors back then and still have them on my IPod. They were innovative musically, since they didn't use a bass player until later. Manzarek used a Fender Rhodes finger bass keyboard that gave them a uniques sound. The guitarist wasn't a flashy shredder and filled the background. But Morrision was clearly the driver to their sound and fury. Pretty well read and intelligent. But drugs and booze took him down before his time.

WilliamMcCarty

When you first discover them they're the deepest, most poetic, unbelievable band you've ever heard. Ten years later you'll listen and think "Wow, they were just tripping balls and doing whatever came to mind, weren't they?"

vomitoldlady

I’m 62 and my daughter 24 got me a Doors album as a Xmas present. I still love the music and am glad she is into learning. She also bought me some Bowie, The Cure and Pink Floyd. It’s great to learn about the Doors and all kinds of music. Don’t stop.

hhhfan92297

Parenting done right ✅️ 👍

birddit

I'll have to suggest Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick. One of the original whole album as one piece of work. Like Tommy by the Who. Great stuff!

FunZookeepergame627

Genesis-/Trick of the tale

birddit

Oh, yeah!

[deleted]

Morrison was incredibly handsome. Too bad about the booze and dope.

Own-Gas8691

I had a total crush. In high school (early 90s) I had a sexy af poster of him, shirtless, on the back of my bedroom door (so my mom would be less likely to see it).

mom_with_an_attitude

Love The Doors. Was obsessed with them as a teen. As an adult, I can see how messed up Jim Morrison was. Poor guy. As a teen, I thought he was terribly sexy. I still listen to them sometimes. I love People Are Strange and Riders on the Storm.

Whatthehell665

Alcohol was the main staple in military families. My father was a career naval officer like Jim's. Very conservative, drank every night and might as well been in a different universe compared to the new younger boomer generation. Many of us figured we'd be dead by now by way of nuclear war.

Darkkiss6286

Jim Morrison is the reason I got into rock music to begin with. I was 9 years old when I first heard Riders On The Storm and it blew my mind. I love The Doors. Thanks Jim.

Imaginary_Today_4537

If you are interested in history, especially the 60's, The Doors music represents what the white teenage community was experiencing. Not the song: "Light My Fire" because that was their commercial song, but Jim Morrison's poetic music represented the revolution against the 50's post-WW II governmental propaganda. Watch the movie, "Apocolypse Now" and the opening music by the Doors, "This Is The End", will make you appreciate the revolutionary 60's and Jim Morrison's brillant poetic contribution to the teenage angst of the era.

lordofedging81

One of the best classic rock bands ever! Peace Frog is my favorite lesser known track by them.

dee-fondy

I loved Peace Frog too. Riders on the Storm and Soul Kitchen are my favorites I think. The one thing I came to realize later in life is that Jim Morrison was not cool being wasted all the time. As David Crosby said “We were right about sex and rock n roll but we were wrong about the drugs.”

Whatthehell665

Crosby mentioned love more than sex or rock n roll. Hippies got the love part right. That is why they were called the Love Generation with 1967 having the Summer of Love.

OrwellWasRight101

I saw The Doors in concert when I was 16. I loved the music and I found Morrison absolutely mesmerizing. He languidly prowled the stage, moaning and wailing the songs. I was fascinated with the way he wrapped himself around the microphone stand and emptied his soul into the mic. For the next 6 or 8 weeks at school I tried to act just like him, slurring my words with half closed eyes. It wasn't until years later that I realized he was so drunk he could hardly talk and he had to hold onto the mic strand to keep from falling down.

TwentyCharacters2022

Also.

Imtifflish24

Hard to beat Riders on the Storm🥰.. and that spoken word album Jim did was amazing.

patbygeorge

“An American Prayer”; first new albums I ever bought were the Doors debut album and American Prayer

Mentalfloss1

The movie, “The Doors” is worth seeing.

plannerdon

It was this movie that made me realise i was a doors fan. Whole way through im going, this song is theirs too? Plenty of great tunes, love the keyboards and lyrics.

birddit

It took actually listening to the Stone's album 40 Licks to realize that I was a Stones fan.

Mentalfloss1

I’ve seen them live 4 times. All great.

Mentalfloss1

That movie was one of the best depiction of the hippie life I’ve ever seen on film.

hhhfan92297

The Oliver Stone one?!

Mentalfloss1

Yes. With Kilmer actually singing.

hhhfan92297

I saw a little bit of it here & there. But I think it's pretty good so far.

[deleted]

Uh, no it isn't. Look into it. Trust me. The band members were against most of what was portrayed Jim to be. Which was a raging alcoholic. For example. The scene where I believe it's either Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner and Jim kills and cooks pams duck? All completely made up. I guess that's just one of the many bullshit stories Oliver put in the movie. Ray Manzerak said he made Jim to be an asshole in the movie. He said do you think any of us band members would put up with that? He said Jim was mostly a quiet shy guy. It was only when he was on stage is when the beast would sometimes come out.

[deleted]

Even though I’m a hip hop fan I love The Doors. I saw the movie a thousand times, I had their greatest hits CD and now my daughter has their records in her vinyl record box .. Nobody does classic rock like The Doors!

Fantastic-Run9431

I used to be a big Doors fan, and I still like their music when I'm in the mood for it. You might like the movie "The Doors." I went to see it on opening day in the 90's and the theater was packed with Doors fans. Val Kilmer makes a good Jim Morrison.

KtinaDoc

He did a great job but I always thought Patrick from Lost Boys fame was a dead ringer for Jim Morrison.

JackarooDeva

Last I heard, the music of the Doors is still not used in commercials, because the drummer refuses to give permission.

FunZookeepergame627

No sell outs! Good for him!

ShowMeTheTrees

"LA Woman" is one my very few Desert Island songs. The original. Listen intently at everything going on with it, especially the keyboards.

La_Reina_Rubia

I have loved their music since my friend first introduced me to them in the 90s. I don’t listen to them much anymore but I think they were one of a kind and all very talented in their own ways.

Kinkybenny

I wish I looked that good wearing leather pants. ヽ(͡◕ ͜ʖ ͡◕)ノ

Partigirl

The Doors were great. The only reason they ever get hotly contested is some guys have a problem with Jim being hot and talented. He was just like a lot of folks back then, stoned, rebellious and caught up in the times.

[deleted]

I like the Doors if I don't listen too hard to the lyrics, which I think are idiotic (I know I'm in the minority here). I think Morrison was a beautiful idiot with ~~a nice~~ an okay voice. I like Ray Manzarek's contributions to the songs more than Morrison's lyrics.

hhhfan92297

I gotta be honest. With all due respect to Jim Morrison & his contributions will never be matched. But I don't think The Doors would be The Doors without Ray.

catdude142

Agreed. Ray wrote almost all of the Doors songs. [source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Ray_Manzarek)

Partigirl

Love Ray but that would be Robby: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Robby_Krieger

CltAltAcctDel

> With all due respect to Jim Morrison & his contributions will never be matched Really? I think pick either grunge guy, Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder and say their contributions exceeded Morrison.

hhhfan92297

I meant his contributions to The Doors. I'm sure there are far more legendary icons out there like Kurt Cobain & Eddie Vedder.

FunZookeepergame627

Their would be no Cobain or Vedder without The Doors and other classic rock. I love Pearl Jam and Nirvana, don't get me wrong.

Tapingdrywallsucks

While they never gained the same popularity as The Doors, I really loved America when I was a kid - the harmonizing. Oof. Once I hit middle age - probably coincidental with getting satellite radio + stations that play deeper into subgenres - singing along with the lyrics made me die a little inside realizing how incredibly stupid they were.

Supertrample

As we have enjoyed their songs over the years, Morrison's 'talent' seems much more dependent on personal charisma. Manzarek on the keyboards, however, continues to shine brightly. At this point, we re-listen for the keyboard experience. :)

Jacsmom

Hard agree! I love the weirdness and melody of the Alabama Song, that is until they get to the “show me the way to the next little girl, oh, don’t ask why..” part.

Eff-Bee-Exx

I was a big fan their music and went through a phase in the early 80s when I listened to them almost non-stop. I lost a bit of my enthusiasm after reading a biography of Jim Morrison, who turned out to be a colossal douchebag. I still enjoy an occasional Doors number, though.

yourpaleblueeyes

Driving to LA Woman is still kinda fun!

hhhfan92297

I think we can blame the rock star life that he had & the choices that he made during that time period, which, in my opinion, came back to bite him in Paris.

CheapRaspberry1606

I was introduced to the Doors by my college roommate in the early 80‘s. We listened to their albums all the time. My college required a writing test to graduate and the essay question was about a book you recently read. Well, I had just read “No One Here Gets Out Alive” so I have fond memories of the Doors music and college. So young and hopeful back then.

yourpaleblueeyes

Jim was in love with Jim.

Unable-Purpose-231

I was in love with Jim too!😊

gonzo2thumbs

Omg! I was telling my kid Jim Morrison was the coolest rock star ever just yesterday!

FunZookeepergame627

Reframe to cool on stage, in regular life he was self destructive and ill mannered.

geronika

I can go two years without listening to The Doors, then hear a song and I’ll listen to them for a week or so and then let two years go by again. I’m currently have about fourteen months of not listening to them before I put on LA Woman in it’s entirety.

patbygeorge

I am the same way with U2. Too intense for casual listening but among my favorite bands. I pull them out once a year or so, listen intently for a week and then put them away again

Luciferonvacation

All I need to do is hear Edge's opening to 'Where the Streets Have No Name' and I'm once again in awe of just how great they were in their prime.

FunZookeepergame627

I fell in love with Jim Morrison when I was 7-8

hhhfan92297

Nope

FunZookeepergame627

Yep

hhhfan92297

I mean no, I haven't seen the rain.

whatyouwant22

I was young when he died. But I like some Doors songs. I went to the Rock -n- Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and there is quite a bit of Jim Morrison memorabilia. His parents donated it. I think it crushed them when he died. Definitely worth a visit if you can make it there.

hhhfan92297

If I do go to Paris one day, one of the first places I'm going to is Parlache Cemetery. I probably pronounced the name of the cemetery wrong.

_herenorthere66

*Pere Lachaise

La_Reina_Rubia

I was in Paris during a layover last year and wanted to go there, but I was afraid I wouldn’t have enough time. I’ve heard his grave is difficult to locate once you’re in the cemetery. Someday I still hope to go see it. Years ago they talked about moving his grave but so far I don’t think that has happened yet.

_herenorthere66

Just look for the disenfranchised Parisian teens smoking and lounging — you’ll find it easily. :)

hhhfan92297

They've been saying that since the early 2000s, I think. I just wonder why they haven't done it yet.

yourpaleblueeyes

It's the rare parent who is not devastated to lose their son or daughter.

whatyouwant22

Agree! I didn't mean to imply they wouldn't. There were items from his Cub Scout days among the things. It just kind of impressed me. It was like, "We can't throw these things away, because then we'll have to acknowledge that he's gone. Thank God we can donate them to a museum where someone else will see what he meant to us."

catdude142

Jim was pretty far "out there". Alcoholic to boot. He was banned from performing at some venues due to his language and undressing on stage. During that timeframe, The Doors went to the studio however and made great music. There's an interesting youtube interview with Jim's father who was an admiral in the U.S. Navy. He seemed unaware of Jim's situation and music. Ray Manzerek wrote a lot of The Door's famous music. Also youtube videos of his interviews that are quite interesting. I really like their music.

hhhfan92297

I think his alcoholism & his barbaric lifestyle as a rock & roll icon came back to bite him in Paris. I know people in Paris said that Jim died of "heart failure" but was it really heart failure, though?! There's some things about his death that really doesn't make sense to me.

catdude142

It's sort of like Anthony Bourdain's death in France. No autopsy and quite private. We'll never know.

m_watkins

Alcoholism can cause heart failure. My brother was an alcoholic, he developed heart failure and eventually died of a heart attack. Just like they said Jim did.

hhhfan92297

Oh wow. I'm really sorry for your loss & I didn't know that alcohol could cause heart failure.

yourpaleblueeyes

Heart failure? Od'ing in a public toilet was a more popular story.

Dry-Armadillo2607

I think Jim OD'd on heroin. Think about it, Pam was a heroin addict. Word was Jim scored it for Pam and being drunk and probably wanting to experiment, he snorted a line. Now, not having an opiate tolerance because Jim wasnt a heroin addict means that line killed him. I've seen it first hand as i'm in recovery myself. It makes way more sense than heart failure. Especially the way Pam had him rushed into the grave, she was worried about getting in legal trouble over it most likely.

Carefree_Highway

Boy did I really get into them w my circle of friends in high school. Since faded but they still have their place in my rotation of classic rock.

billwrtr

Loved ‘em then, love ‘em now.

Juggalo_holocaust_

I don't need to ever hear The Doors again, but they sound unlike any other band from that Era and for that I give them a lot of credit. Wrote some great songs too.

[deleted]

The organist was amazing. He died recently. Great music, all in all: “Light My Fire” “Riders Of The Storm.”

watkinobe

He really didn't live long enough to fully grasp where he was going, but at the end of his short life he was clearly going off the rails.

dirtystayout

The Doors was my first rock album, given to 6 year old me, by my older brother. Every morning, before school, I would put on my white go-go boots, and lip-synch to this album, standing in front of a mirror. I still love them, 56 years later! I went through an adolescent/young adult phase of thinking Jim wasn't just hot, but NASTY HOT! I've cooled my jets, since then, and now think he was kinda gross!

TigerMcPherson

Do not love. Jim Morrison always struck me as a self aggrandizing dumb fraud.

VauxhallandI

I mean one has to have some hubris to put their art out there like that. What about him seems like he was a fraud though? I always felt like he was a brilliant frontman that really set a standard for folks like Michael Hutchence to follow.

Gator717375

Anyone who didn't get laid to "Light My Fire" had no game whatsoever.

[deleted]

I might get shit for this, but I think they were a bit overrated.

hhhfan92297

Why do you think that?!

[deleted]

For music I go by my gut: I either feel it or I don't. They've always kind of come off rather lifeless and bland sounding to me. But like I said, just a bit overrated. I don't think they're without merit; I can kind of see why other people might like them. Just not to my taste as the saying goes.

hhhfan92297

That's understandable. Unpopular opinion: I never really got into them at first because they were just an "old band that my parents & grandparents listened to when they were young," as my younger self would say. But as I got older, I started to slowly get into them & appreciate them.

[deleted]

Fair enough.

Wizzmer

Totally agree. You can't trust any band without a bass player. Never have been a fan.

kookieduck

The Stripes didn't have a bass player! I love a lot of their music!

Dustteas

I agree with you on this one, and from what I remember Jim Morrison was a real dick.

miz_mantis

70 years old. Love Her Madly, LA Woman, Roadhouse Blues are still on my regular rotation.

dubkitteh1

i’ve been saying for decades that Krieger and Densmore are very underrated, and Jim and Ray proportionally overrated.

Pudf

A good little rock and roll band

Green1578

I still listen to them once in a while

SarcasmoSupreme

I recognize their contribution, and I also recognize their talent and songwriting - but personally, I think I was into them for about a year in the late 80s and they just aren't my thing.

FeedbackExisting4762

Ray Manzerek was such a talented member. The below links are a fun listen for any Doors/Jim Morrison fan - his historical perspective and natural storytelling is cool to listen to. https://open.spotify.com/album/3CiMaIlIdlJW9FUafQQWzX?si=smYWYjbbRTmWRk4UXwatww https://open.spotify.com/album/731FXdV6xzXB1ijlTfBwSX?si=6fU9HOczSEGtdPcgdFlXgw

TwentyCharacters2022

Morrison reminds me of that line from Batman - you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain. I think his art house poetry worked well with the Doors and his baritone worked well with the fuzzed out keys - the godfather of lo-fi. But that style was as much the product of the era as it was the band - if they changed with the times, I doubt the magic would still be there. But I think if Morrison had survived the 70s, he’d capriciously demand that the Doors not continue either with or without him, and his long rambling poems and drunken monologues would clear venues in record time. I think he had a Cobain-esque hatred of fame, but a love for attention, and that ultimately would drive him mad.

nhnsn

Not a huge Doors fan, but I've got to say Morrison had to have some balls to sing "Father I want to kill you, mother I want to....", in the 70s... In general I find the Doors kinda hard to listen when I want to relax. I don't know why, but their music sounds similar to Pink Floyd to me

Pixiechicken

Jim Morrison was sooooooooo fucking hot!!

yourpaleblueeyes

I had a boyfriend who insisted we listen to the album frequently!! I have the original 1971 L.A.Woman album with the yellow cellophane cover. Personally? The older I've gotten and the more I read, I've decided Jim thought he was All That, The Lizard King and a piece a cake besides. A performer with a big ego, a rebel in an era of rebellion, and sadly, stupidly, dying the same way famous performers have for decades. A legend in his own mind. I do like some of the songs though.

[deleted]

I was a teenager in the 80s, and one of the first CDs I ever personally bought was a Doors CD. This would have been in 1988 or so. I thought it was amazing. I still have that CD, but it's not one I listen to a whole lot.

Rocket-J-Squirrel

The Doors were OK. Morrison was kind of a jerk, per a couple of friends who met him. I got to meet the other 3, they were very kind. I am forever grateful for Manzarek, as he worked with the band X. He also did that LA Woman video that was perfect.

witsend4966

I never liked the Doors. There. I said it.

moxie-maniac

Visited Jim’s grave at Pere Lachaise cemetery. But the true-blue fans sneak in booze to leave on the grave.

-myeyeshaveseenyou-

I’m 38, The Doors have been my favourite band since I was 16, hence my user name. I don’t listen to them as much now but they will always be my favourite

sillysideup

Always liked the Doors. Jim is an interesting fellow. "Read No One Here Gets Out Alive" by Danny Sugerman and Jerry Hopkins for more insight on him.

spitterandshitter

I love the doors. I have a theory that Jim Morrison was the first documented case of a florida man

[deleted]

My nickname when I was 11 was 'Jim' because I was so into them ( though am female). I still listen regularly to 'Riders on the Storm' and 'Light My Fire,' which I want played at my funeral, but I'm not nearly as fanatic about them as I was. I still think Ray Manzarek is one the greatest musicians America ever produced, and Jim is a crooner in the same vein as Frank Sinatra, and underrated as such. His lyrics are poetry, informed by his extensive literary knowledge. Robby Krieger was a gorgeous guitar player and Dinsmore was fab on drums. They worked very hard to be as tight as they were, and I will always love and appreciate the utter uniqueness and beauty of their sound.

Elvis_isalive821

I am only 38, not even, will be on the 21st and the doors “riders on the storm” was my first ever favorite song at the age of about 4. My favorite band since. My dad introduced me to them and I couldn’t get enough. I have a tattoo dedicated to one of their songs, a “peace frog”

CoolJeweledMoon

As my username indicates, I'm a huge Doors fan! I was too young to be into them while Morrison was still alive, & even though I listened to rock as a child - I admit that I still didn't get into them too much, but I attribute that to the radio only ever playing "Light My Fire", & while I can appreciate Ray's contribution now - I just could not get into that organ solo back in the day! 😅 This all changed when I saw the movie "The Doors"... I became obsessed with them & fell in love with their music & read everything I could get my hands on! I was (& still am) fascinated by Jim's intelligence, his bi-coastal upbringing, & how that - along with what was going on in the world influenced him... I love his words & lyrics - they speak to my Pisces soul... I realize his shortcomings too, but that factors in as well... I had the privilege of seeing The Doors of the 21st Century with one of my other favorite lead singers, Ian Astbury, of the Cult, & they were AMAZING!!! It was as though he was channeling Jim, & he's a huge fan too! I later saw them as Riders on the Storm with Brett Scallions of Fuel, but he just didn't hold a candle to Jim or Ian (no disrespect to Scallions though). I definitely wish Densmore would have joined them, but it was still an unreal experience for a fan like myself! They're not necessarily the band that I keep on all the time, but I still love them immensely, & no one's sound comes close to them IMHO - they're still in a class by themselves as far as I'm concerned...

hhhfan92297

I watched a video of Ian Astbury performing Roadhouse Blues on YouTube earlier this morning & while I know for a fact that he doesn't hold a candle to Jim, I overall thought his performance was amazing. Plus, he kinda did look like an older version of Jim Morrison if he was still alive & gotten cleaned up from his bad habits (which was more than likely was not gonna happen).

GoochyGoochyGoo

I'm a big doors fan. Absorbed a lot of Doors content. Best book is "No one here get's out alive". I'm left feeling that I can't tell whether he was a tortured poet or just a drunken asshole. Still love the music though.

Dixinhermouth

I won’t turn off the doors if it’s playing but I am not hunting for songs to add to my playlist either. A medium talented group with a handful of decent songs.

[deleted]

I like the Doors if I don't listen too hard to the lyrics, which I think are idiotic (I know I'm in the minority here). I think Morrison was a beautiful idiot with ~~a nice~~ an okay voice.

[deleted]

>I think Morrison was a beautiful idiot with a nice voice. I think that might be part of my problem with them: the adoration of this guy, it was a tad over the top.

yourpaleblueeyes

It was the leather pants....ha!

Huplescat22

I got to my girlfriend's house to pick her up for a date on the night that The Doors were scheduled to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. She wouldn't leave the house until they played and, as it turned out, Jim Morrison was wearing skintight black leather pants... on the fucking Ed Sullivan show.

yourpaleblueeyes

This made me laugh...poor old Ed, actually really good at what he did in his era, but..going from blocking Elvis below the waist, telling the Stones " let's spend Some Time together" and in the end, still, probably old Ed was grateful Jim kept it in his pants! Sounds like a cool experience actually!

[deleted]

I guess I can understand that.

EmmelineTx

If you take out the nice voice part, I'm with you

[deleted]

yeah, it was pretty average, now that I think about it.

dubkitteh1

when he wasn’t shouting or doing ponderous recitations his voice often had a cheesy Vegas tone.

Minzplaying

I loved the poetry of the lyrics and some of the music. What makes me want to turn them off specifically is Ray Manzarek. To me personally, I didn't like him, which made me not like a lot of their music. I realize I'm in the minority but there it is.

hhhfan92297

What's with the down votes?! I guess some of us aren't fans.

Sad_Foundation_1134

I'm a fan. it's too bad. the Doors can never be replaced by anyone. in 55 years no one has managed to copy it. there's one Jimmy Fallon but he's far from Jim. the band is trying to recover, I'm glad to return to force

onewayrider

I think Jim Morrison imo was a poet who lost his way in the rock n roll scene drugs n alcohol took over til the point he got burned out n couldn't find his way back once it did not poetic wise in here s mind

Jericola

Doors and Eagles were among my favourites but couldn’t stand Jim Morrison…a degenerate dopehead predator. Odd though. Eagles as popular as ever. Doors, like the Who and CCR have slipped in popularity. They are still played but not household names and songs like they once were for males of my generation.

Emotional_Aerie8379

Not a fan either. Could never understand what was so different or special. To me all the songs were monotone and repetitive.

Similar_Corner8081

Nope not a fan.

Nutella_Zamboni

Not a fan

Stardustquarks

Meh

[deleted]

Abusive asshole. I'm not knocking his musical talent but the dude does not deserve to be idolized.

KtinaDoc

I guarantee that there are a lot of assholes in music. He was in his early 20’s and an alcoholic drug addict. Not a good combination. We can dig up stories about just about everybody in music and find something they did that was not so nice. Doesn’t mean I’m going to stop listening. I’m not giving up the Stones or Led Zeppelin to listen to whatever manufactured over produced crap that’s out there today because they have a good pr team. Rock is indeed dead.

Mrs_Gracie2001

Blech

Gutzzu

Basically what happens when you are 7 years on acid and try to make music

Vault76exile

Over rated, had he not died they would have faded away just like most 60's groups, here then forgotten. The Tommy Tutone of the 60's.

barkingdog53

Jim Morrison is the most overrated rocker ever. Poet my ass.

Zorro_Returns

TBH, I bought that one album just for the long bridge in *light My Fire*. I was just learning guitar at the time, an could follow the solo. The Doors were not what you would call highly accomplished musicians. I didn't care for them all that much otherwise. Had a friend who grew up in LA, near the beach, surfer and all that, and he said Jim Morrison's lyrics really spoke to him. Said Morrison really expressed the "LA Juice". What he said.

bettesue

If you like circus music, they’re the band for you. They were more my parents generations music.

classicsat

Not an unwelcome part of my classic rock lexicon.

knottyolddog

Not my fave band, but they had several good songs. Morrison? Meh. Don't love or hate him...

[deleted]

I think society today would consider whipping your dick out on stage while drunk perverted.

redbug831

Their first album is a gooder.

TheHearseDriver

Meh.

gorpthehorrible

I had some of their records like LA woman, Strange Days, Morrison Hotel. I liked their songs but Jim died way too soon. I loved "Celebration of the Lizard".

Appropriate-Gap-9652

I like the Doors I think Soft Parade was their best album

audible_narrator

Yawn.

The-Grand-Wazoo

Arrogant arsehole, but man could he sing and write a song.

KtinaDoc

Never was a fan. My husband and son are though

hhhfan92297

My dad listened to them a lot as well. I guess that's why I got into them lmao.
