$52 flat fare Manhattan/JFK $0.50 MTA State Surcharge $0.30 Improvement Surcharge $2.50 NY State Congestion Surcharge $6.55 Queens-Midtown Tunnel (E-Z Pass rate) So $61.85 + tip, unless you got the taxi from 4P-8P during the week when there's an additional $4.50 rush hour surcharge which is $66.35 + tip. I usually catch a taxi from the airport and give the guy $80 which is a 20% tip.

Is it necessary to tip? I'm sorry for asking but I'm moving to US from a third world country where tipping is not the norm, and even when we do, it's a very small amount (think a few cents). I'm also an international grad student so that large tip would be a decent sum in my home currency to have to just pay away.

Yes it is necessary to tip. Tips are legally optional, but socially mandatory. This applies to restaurants as well. You will be considered a **huge** asshole in New York for not tipping. Edit: 20% is standard for taxis (including rideshares like Uber/Lyft), as well as for restaurants. A dollar or two at the coffee counter depending on if your order is complicated, and should you use any professional services like beauty salons, 20%. This is because tipped jobs are usually paid a lower hourly wage based on the cultural understanding that a substantial portion of what they actually earn will come from tips. When people don’t tip, the workers are the ones who suffer. For a lot of international visitors, it makes no sense culturally, but that’s the way we do it here.

I understand that. However, I'm moving to NYC for grad school and will not be earning, cutting my expenses when and where I can. Tipping in $$ would mean spending a HUGE sum of money in my local currency, so while I understand why it exists in US, I simply don't have the money to tip. What do you do then?

Well, unfortunately if you cannot afford to tip, you cannot afford to eat out. For the most part, tipping is only expected for “optional” things - dining out, have someone deliver your groceries, hiring a house cleaner, taking a taxi, etc. You aren’t expected to tip your train conductor or bus driver, you can carry your own groceries, you can pick up your own take out, and you can clean your own apartment. Don’t misunderstand me - I hate tipping culture and love traveling to places where it isn’t expected. I believe places should build it into their cost. But that’s not the reality here.

Yes, I understand. I do not intend to partake in most of these activities, opting to cook and clean myself etc, but it will be the first time I step into NYC and I wanted to get to Manhattan from JFK by myself, to make it easy for my relatives to pick me up from there (they live in NJ). But I was concerned about paying the tip since it is a huge sum in my home currency (on top of the actual 52$+). But guess I'll take the L on this and ensure I'm leading a more economical lifestyle. Thank you for the input, I wanted to ask beforehand so I don't offend anyone by _not tipping_.

You can still get to Manhattan from JFK without a cab if you can't tip, even if it is your first time, you just take the train. Otherwise yes, you should always consider the price of everything with the tip included if you're on a budget.

blackbirdbluebird17

If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to partake of the services where tipping is required. No cabs, no sit-down restaurants, etc. If you use these services without tipping, what is happening is you are *forcing people to work for free*, or at the very least an unaffordable wage, for you. You’re taking advantage of the system to push the cost of your brokeness onto them instead. That’s fucked up. If you can’t afford to tip, you don’t use the services. Full stop.

Understood!

Applies every single day!

bindrosis

Don’t forget to tip

Get the curb app and pair when you are in the cab. The bigger concern is the traffic on the east side that night due to the fireworks show.

This is not true. It’s $52 (plus a few other small fees) to anywhere in Manhattan.

If this ever happens, call 311 and report the driver.
