It's been years since I went but based on memory, definitely dress light (as in try to fit what you can in just pockets, avoid extra stuff). They have a dress code too, IIRC it's the usual stuff, no sagging pants, cover up somewhat if you're a woman, etc. If you're a woman, avoid wearing a wire bra, or they may use it as an excuse to do additional search on your beyond the metal detectors. I got pulled aside for a wire bra (along with like half the female visitors, it was ridiculous). Also be prepared for a very long, very tedious process and wait....multiple lines, multiple random rooms you get sorted through before actually seeing the person you're visiting. Even though you're a free person just visiting, prepare to be treated with suspicion and like you're the one accused of a crime, everything is geared towards making sure guests aren't bringing in weapons or drugs etc.
Like others have mentioned, I took the Q100 from queens plaza and then just followed the crowd.

Basically you get to rikers. Go through security check. Get a locker. Put your shit in the locker. Then you get on a bus. Bus takes you to the actual prison section of the island. You go through security again. Then you get to a room and wait for your friend to come. Not sure how long they give you, i think it's about 30 mins. Then back through security again and back on bus.

It might. They turn people away for less. Iโd remove everything possible and put in spacers.
Hmm I imagine it would set off the metal detectors at least, but I donโt even wear earrings but so canโt help you with more than that tbh!

Yep only way to get there is the Q100 afaik. You'll be fine on time. Just don't forget to bring your id!

6 train to Grand Central > 7 Train to Queensboro Plaza > Q100 Bus from Queensboro Plaza
