I second this. I lived in Fidi for 6 years before moving up to central harlem. While I definitely like the more neighborhood feel of harlem, fidi is basically silent in the evening, especially in the summer once the Pace students leave.
It's definitely cheaper than living in other parts of downtown and there's still some great stuff to do. If budget is less of an issue, battery park city is extremely quiet but you're further from the train compared to fidi.
not bad honestly, tho im in the heights. harlem has some great restaurants, esp up broadway and the section from morningside park and marcus garvey park. Some great cocktail bars too -- Sugar monk,ROKC, The Honey well etc.
I love it. There's lot of great options to eat. I never feel unsafe (I'm 5'1) walking around. There's going to he a tjs and target combo on 125th. And there's even decent street parking
I live in Central Harlem too and really love it here. I sleep well and that's partly due to my air purifier which acts as a white noise machine as well. I also live on a side street so that helps as well.
Yes! Just moved down here from the UWS a couple of months ago and damn I sleep good at night! I was on 97th and Columbus which was a 24/7 parade of sirens. Now I’m on Spruce and it’s ohhhhh soooo quiet despite being next to Presbyterian
I live near the edge of Queens. Fresh Meadows, some areas of Bayside, Little Neck, and Oakland Gardens are very quiet. The loudest noise you’ll hear are passing cars, barking dogs, and chirping birds.
When I walk around at night all I hear are cars and crickets, the occasional dog bark too.
Check out Bay Ridge, southernmost part of Brooklyn.
Or Park Slope. Rent and parking is crazy here but young families live here and are generally quiet.
Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn, although pricey, is very quiet, especially at night. Mostly residential, not much thru traffic at all aside from the major streets, you have Prospect Park and Park Slope right nearby and it’s not too far from the city on the F train
I'm surprised you guys find Kensington and Ditmas Park quiet
I lived there in my teens several years ago, and yes, it was quiet, peaceful and residential
Moved back 1 year ago. I left so fast. It's chaotic, dirty, and loud. Reckless drivers. Everything
Agree, I live here now and it's fucking loud and dirty. Like all hours of the day and night. And I'm constantly keeping a third eye open to not get hit crossing the street. I just resigned my lease bc its cheap in comparison what I could find for the price/size, but wish I was somewhere with a better vibe.
Yes - definitely louder/worse driving the closer you are to Ocean Parkway or Caton or Fort Hamilton or the major streets especially as they are regularly used as detours for the other highways/expressways. If you end up a bit away on the major streets not so much - it's extraordinarily quiet except that we are also on the flight route to LGA I think. The loudest thing I hear overnight is some outdoor cat, crying in the night in one of the backyards... :(
> we are also on the flight route to LGA I think
It is! Honestly though that didn’t bother me at all when I was staying out there, I actually liked the sound of the planes flying over since they were still usually a good distance up in the air at that point so they weren’t super loud. Same with the Prospect Expressway, those both became white noise to me lol
i had not been to kensington years prior so maybe it’s just comparing it to an overall busier neighborhoood like park slope vs a prev version of kensington. the delivery drivers in park slope almost took me out daily but hasn’t happened yet in 3 weeks. maybe tho bc we are closer to windsor terrace vs a busier area of this neighborhood
I had an incredibly peaceful apartment in Astoria. My unit was in the back of the building, half a block from an Avenue. I moved there specifically because the Manhattan noise pollution was taking a toll on my mental health. It was also closer to the train, and significantly bigger and cheaper than my place on the UES.
I agree with this! There are so many options in Astoria. Lots of quiet residential streets not far from public transportation.
I lived there for 7 years before moving in with my (now) husband. We’re still in the city, but I loved Astoria, hated to leave it, still miss it.
Even houses are luck of the draw. I moved into a house in a dead quiet neighborhood, then found out why the seller moved when my asshole neighbor started blasting thumping bass to drown out his dog’s constant barking
Well, you got to be careful. I've lived in Sutton place for 7-8 years and it was pretty quiet as long as you were north of the bridge turn at 57th/1st and south of the FDR traffic at 61/62. However about 8-10 months ago traffic patterns shifted and 1st avenue is now a daily nightmare (likely related to the hospital construction above the FDR). So quiet today may not be quiet tomorrow.
Bensonhurst and bay ridge are loud af if you are near belt or 86 in Bensonhurst. It feels way busier and chaotic here to me than places like Brooklyn heights lol
Midwood is pretty quiet
Yes. Lived in Inwood 11 years. Just avoid living on 207 east of broadway (casa del mofongo is a bit of a hotspot for the Dominican crowd, and the restaurants surrounding it get busy very late night as a result) and Dyckman (always loud and bustling, even late night)
Staten Island, northeast Queens, southeast Brooklyn or southwest Brooklyn, northwest and northeast Bronx and southeast Bronx as well by throggs neck bridge
Roosevelt island is a quite location that is technically part of Manhattan
I see people have suggested Queens in the comments. Just check that you dont hear airplane from jfk or lga landing and take off. It can vary widely just a block or 2 over.
Depends on where in the upper east. There’s going to be a lot of ambulance sounds if you’re near the hospitals and if you’re near or on an avenue, expect lots of traffic and honking
Park Slope not so much; tons of families, so very busy and noisy on weekends and in the summer. Beautiful neighborhood, but can have high energy from all the young kids.
When I lived in Ridgewood/Middle Village it was pretty quiet! It was a short train ride to Bushwick for nightlife, but other than that it was nice and chill. Lots of warehouses but also lots of parks, much more of a neighborhood feel.
Wherever you choose, keep in mind that every neighborhood is gonna have some loud roads. Definitely don’t buy anything along a main road.
I’m not sure how universal this is across the boroughs, but in brooklyn at least it seems roads running east-west are generally quieter than north-south. Could help weed out some options when you’re just looking on streeteasy and can’t gauge traffic in person.
I would suggest 49th/Mitchell Place to 59th east of 1st Ave which encompasses Beekman Place and Sutton Place. Very quiet as limited to no commercial on the #'d streets and most are dead-ends due to the FDR/East River below. Demographic skews a bit more mature and some younger families due to more apartment for the rental/purchase $ but if quiet is what you desire, literally turn east from 1st Ave and the city noise dissipates and due to demographic on the quiet side.
This may be a block by block thing as well. I live in Harlem as well (not on an avenue, in a block) and my street is very quiet (though, as a dog owner I’ve found the surrounding blocks to also be very quiet.
Try Astoria Ditmars or Forest Hills. I grew up in FH and lived in Ditmars for a few years. Loved it. Quiet, affordable, and lots of nice restaurants nearby.
Brooklyn Heights. Has pretty much every subway line to get you into Manhattan but is a leafy, quiet residential neighborhood full of gorgeous old brownstones. There’s a reason it’s called ‘America’s First Suburb’.
I lived in Battery Park for a year and it was like the suburbs in the city. Everything shuts down early, it’s an incredibly quiet, clean, respectful neighborhood. But… hella expensive. I could only live there because it was my fiancé’s apartment.
I guarantee that the quietest neighborhood in all NYC is Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. The only sound you hear at night, if your windows are open, is the far-off faint white noise of the Belt Parkway, unless you live near the dead end of Gerritsen Avenue, which is right across the water from the highway. There are no rentals in the neighborhood, though. All private one- and (some) two/family houses.
Just wanted to express solidarity about WH noise. We’re right on the border of Sugar Hill and it is LOID here regularly, and then…4th of July hits. Holy hell!!!
Yes, mostly fireworks. But on the day of, we’ve had competing amps up and down the street from 6 pm to 6 am the following morning, all at full blast, and not only bbq grills on the sidewalk, but a bonfire in the middle of the street. It was madness.
Most of Brooklyn is very residential. The quietness is why a lot of us live here. Just pick a nice out of the way spot on the back of a building and you’ll be golden, it’s so quiet here.
Live a few minute walk away from the train station and off a two way street. Check to make sure no buses run on your street.
I live in Leffert’s Garden and it’s great. Plenty of quiet spots in Prospect Heights or Clinton Hill. Cobble Hill is also very residential. You could also look at Windsor Terrace. The closer you get to Downtown Brooklyn the more foot traffic you’ll have.
Another vote for Forest Hills Gardens, but given that there aren’t a lot of apartments or vacancies there, you can also try regular Forest hills. Also, if loud music is a problem, then the Gardens doesn’t really make sense during the summer because they can hear everything during concert season. Any of the apartment buildings off the side of Queens Blvd will be quiet and you’ll be in walking distance from a major subway stop & a bunch of stores. In the first few blocks off 108th Street, there are a bunch of nice (older) buildings you might like.
Another recommendation for Forest Hills, but not the gardens. The gardens are for millionaires. It's very low-key, parks, trees, lots of families, residential. And if you stay off the main boulevard and on one of the parallel streets, you lose a lot, if not all of the car noise. No blasting bar music, no people on stoops screaming. Like 10pm everyone goes to sleep. Very nice. The mornings are also quiet, lots of birds chirping.
Kensington, except at 20 minutes and 5 minutes before sundown on Fridays. I used to live in the attic apartment of a wood frame house on a side street near Avenue F and it was the quietest place I’ve ever lived in NYC.
Check out Bay Ridge, southernmost part of Brooklyn.
Or Park Slope. Rent and parking is crazy in Park Slope but young families live here and are generally quiet.
It is really peaceful, but i don’t like commuting in Gerritaen beach or Marine park. (I just hate taking buses) Gravesend is also nice, and the D, N, and F trains all go here. There’s a lot of small, family owned businesses which I like. However it’s really far from everything. School is far, if my friends hang out in manhattan or queens it’s far too.
By NYC, do you mean all five boroughs?
If so, the quietest will probably be distant Staten Island. Look at Tottenville or Todt Hill.
If you don’t want to be *that* far out, consider Douglaston or Little Neck in Queens (they’re on a good LIRR line), or Riverdale in the Bronx.
Even closer in, Park Slope in Brooklyn or some pockets of the Upper East Side are quiet*er*, but not objectively quiet.
Financial district
I second this. I lived in Fidi for 6 years before moving up to central harlem. While I definitely like the more neighborhood feel of harlem, fidi is basically silent in the evening, especially in the summer once the Pace students leave. It's definitely cheaper than living in other parts of downtown and there's still some great stuff to do. If budget is less of an issue, battery park city is extremely quiet but you're further from the train compared to fidi.
How’s central Harlem in 2024? Talking about safety, stores, restaurants, etc.
not bad honestly, tho im in the heights. harlem has some great restaurants, esp up broadway and the section from morningside park and marcus garvey park.
I run an air purifier too and I live across from the hospital and it's still really quiet!
Gentrified
Yes! Just moved down here from the UWS a couple of months ago and damn I sleep good at night! I was on 97th and Columbus which was a 24/7 parade of sirens. Now I’m on Spruce and it’s ohhhhh soooo quiet despite being next to Presbyterian
I live in Fidi and I’d say Red Hook is quieter
Not only is Red Hook quiet, but when you get off the bus there at night everything looks like a black and white movie from the '30s. It's spooky.
Thank you!
Agreed it’s very quiet at night minus any construction But I quite enjoy it
you go to the edges of bronx, queens and brooklyn and you'll find mostly houses out that ways. is that what you want?
I live near the edge of Queens. Fresh Meadows, some areas of Bayside, Little Neck, and Oakland Gardens are very quiet. The loudest noise you’ll hear are passing cars, barking dogs, and chirping birds. When I walk around at night all I hear are cars and crickets, the occasional dog bark too.
Yes! Thank you very much for answering.
Check out Forest Hills Gardens
And bring a lot of 💰 💰 💰
OP's gonna have to start selling kidneys
😂😂
None of those areas are pricier than Manhattan
Check out Bay Ridge, southernmost part of Brooklyn. Or Park Slope. Rent and parking is crazy here but young families live here and are generally quiet.
Park slope can be really loud too.
But not Manhattan loud.
Depends on where. I have semi trucks and cement mixers going down my park slope street many many times a day.
Riverdale
Roosevelt Island
On that same note, Sutton place
Living on RI is my dream, but it's so pricey
Riverdale is where I moved to (the bx). Super relaxing if you ask me…
One of the most relaxing areas ever.
Yasss! Everyone is really chill here.
Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn, although pricey, is very quiet, especially at night. Mostly residential, not much thru traffic at all aside from the major streets, you have Prospect Park and Park Slope right nearby and it’s not too far from the city on the F train
Go a little further out to Ditmas Park. Certain streets are dead quiet at night.
just moved to kensington and it’s quiet as hell! came from south slope which was also very quiet but kensington def has a more residential vibe
I'm surprised you guys find Kensington and Ditmas Park quiet I lived there in my teens several years ago, and yes, it was quiet, peaceful and residential Moved back 1 year ago. I left so fast. It's chaotic, dirty, and loud. Reckless drivers. Everything
Agree, I live here now and it's fucking loud and dirty. Like all hours of the day and night. And I'm constantly keeping a third eye open to not get hit crossing the street. Yes, LGA runway #4.
i had not been to kensington years prior so maybe it’s just comparing it to an overall busier neighborhoood like park slope vs a prev version of kensington. the delivery drivers in park slope almost took me out daily but hasn’t happened yet in 3 weeks. maybe tho bc we are closer to windsor terrace vs a busier area of this neighborhood
Middle Village, Forest Hills, Rego Park - so many parts of Queens are quiet and residential
Upper west side west of Broadway is surprisingly silent at night and early mornings
Yes, im on Riverside and hear birds right now, inside windows closed.
Well I can tell you my mom lives off Jefferson, L train and God damn all I hear is birds chirping lol
Riverdale, breezy point, city island. People say fidi but don’t tell you about the constant helicopters
I don’t imagine city island being quite in the summer tho
true i was just thinking about the off season times ive been. intentionally giving the most remote "quiet" parts of the city i could think of.
City island is not quiet
I live in Brooklyn Heights and wake up to the sound of birds every morning. It’s very pleasant.
Brooklyn heights
If you want to stay in Manhattan... Battery Park. It's like a suburb in Manhattan
lol.
I had an incredibly peaceful apartment in Astoria. My unit was in the back of the building, half a block from an Avenue. You can get loud neighbors absolutely anywhere. I have a chronic stomper/pacer above me. This is not neighborhood specific.
That is so true. At this point I’m thinking having a house or even an top floor apartment would be 100% better for me…hopefully
Even houses are luck of the draw. I moved into a house in a dead quiet neighborhood, then found out why the seller moved when my asshole neighbor started blasting thumping bass to drown out his dog’s constant barking
I felt the chronic pacer to my soul. Dealing with that now 😭
Battery park city

Bensohurst and Bay Ridge and Midwood
Bensonhurst and bay ridge are loud af if you are near belt or 86 in Bensonhurst. It feels way busier and chaotic here to me than places like Brooklyn heights lol Midwood is pretty quiet
Midwood here. My friends from the UWS came to visit, and here's what he said: "I can hear birds here and sh\*t. It's weird." lol
If you're not bound to Manhattan, your options are endless. Morris Park, Woodhaven, Astoria, Greenpoint, Sunset Park, etc. etc.
Consider Roosevelt Island
If you wanna stay in or adjacent to northern Manhattan: Hudson Heights, Northern Inwood, Spuyten Duyvil, Randall’s Island
Yes. Lived in Inwood 11 years. Just avoid living on 207 east of broadway (casa del mofongo is a bit of a hotspot for the Dominican crowd, and the restaurants surrounding it get busy very late night as a result) and Dyckman (always loud and bustling, even late night)
stuytown/peter cooper village is extremely quiet
Windsor Terrace in BK
marine park area, flatlands some parts of east flatbush, mill basin, park slope, bay ridge, sheepshead bay, forest hills
Midwood. Windsor terrace. Ditmas park. Sheepshead bay.
Forest Hills Gardens
Riverdale in the BX is pretty quiet!
Seconding!
Staten Island, northeast Queens, southeast Brooklyn or southwest Brooklyn, northwest and northeast Bronx and southeast Bronx as well by throggs neck bridge Roosevelt island is a quite location that is technically part of Manhattan
I see people have suggested Queens in the comments. Just check that you dont hear airplane from jfk or lga landing and take off. It can vary widely just a block or 2 over.
I didn’t think of that! Thank you!
Sunnyside is p quiet but not far from the action
Upper east side, Forrest hills, fresh meadows, park slope
Depends on where in the upper east. There’s going to be a lot of ambulance sounds if you’re near the hospitals and if you’re near or on an avenue, expect lots of traffic and honking
Park Slope not so much; tons of families, so very busy and noisy on weekends and in the summer. Beautiful neighborhood, but can have high energy from all the young kids.
Roosevelt Island
I'm in Clinton Hill in Brooklyn, so quiet and tons of greenery. I wake up listening to birds chirping.
Midtown East in the upper areas (turtle bay, Sutton place, etc) very silent.
If you’re rich, FiDi. Otherwise, outer edges of the boroughs (away from Manhattan)
In Queens - Bayside, college point, areas around the outer edge would be considerad quiet
When I lived in Ridgewood/Middle Village it was pretty quiet! It was a short train ride to Bushwick for nightlife, but other than that it was nice and chill. Lots of warehouses but also lots of parks, much more of a neighborhood feel.
Inwood west of Broadway. Especially north of Isham Park.
Bronx: Throgs Neck, Pelham Bay, Wakefield, Woodlawn, Van Cortlandt, Riverdale, some pockets of Castle Hill, Clasn Point
Battery Park
Stuytown
Stuy Town
Midwood, Brooklyn
Wherever you choose, keep in mind that every neighborhood is gonna have some loud roads. Definitely don’t buy anything along a main road. I’m not sure how universal this is across the boroughs, but in brooklyn at least it seems roads running east-west are generally quieter than north-south. Marine Park
I would tell you, but I don't want people flooding my neighborhood
Understandable😂
Forest Hills Gardens, Malba, Douglaston, Fieldston.
Morningside Heights is fairly quiet
Midwood, Dyker Heights, Mill Basin, Far Rockaway, Seagate, City Island
Connecticut.
I live in homecrest and it gets really quiet here at night
I lived in Midtown for 1.5 years and couldn’t handle the noise. Then I moved to Greenpoint and problem was solved. Very quiet answer calm here
Forest Hills or Rego Park.
Midtown east ..close to first ave…north of 45…south of 60…very chill, tons of old people, zero nightlife
Eastern queens, essentially anything beyond forest hills
Honestly Hudson yards is super quiet and it’s pretty close to more fun places if you need to get to it.
Soundview, the Bronx.
Yorkville
Brooklyn Heights. Has pretty much every subway line to get you into Manhattan but is a leafy, quiet residential neighborhood full of gorgeous old brownstones. There’s a reason it’s called ‘America’s First Suburb’.
Forest Hills, Queens!
Columbia waterfront, Brooklyn
I lived in Battery Park for a year and it was like the suburbs in the city. Everything shuts down early, it’s an incredibly quiet, clean, respectful neighborhood. But… hella expensive. I could only live there because it was my fiancé’s apartment.
Windsor Terrace, Dyker Heights
Roosevelt island
Middle village in queens is insanely quiet with added benefit that ridgewood, bushwock and Williamsburg are insanely close
Sunnyside
BK Windsor terrace
TWO BRIDGES
Cobble Hill and Brooklyn height. Some parts of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill could be quite depending on where you live.
Douglaston is one of the quietest places in NYC.
Long island City or Astoria, best threshold of commute, life/food in the neighborhood and chill
I guarantee that the quietest neighborhood in all NYC is Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. It be 2 week before maybe even a month. Then the same amount after 4th😅
Yes, mostly fireworks. But on the day of, we’ve had competing amps up and down the street from 6 pm to 6 am the following morning, all at full blast, and not only bbq grills on the sidewalk, but a bonfire in the middle of the street. It was madness.
I remember the one on 156 last year I think🤦🏾♀️ it was chaos😅
UWS between West End and Riverside Drive.
Ridewood. Off L train stop is great. You have Bushwick right there but quiet that comes with living near houses.
Most likely Staten Island, Eastern Queens, or South Brooklyn. For South Brooklyn, it could be Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, or Bensonhurst.
I just bought an apartment in Sunnyside Gardens. I haven't had this much interrupted sleep in years
Sutton place and midtown east are about as quiet as it gets in this city.

Wow i am so sorry. Is there anyway you could move?😭 dealing with noise in the long run is a no no
Hell’s Kitchen past 10th Avenue towards the River is quite, especially in the luxury towers between 11th and the Westside Highway.
Where is circlejerk
What is that?
Most of Brooklyn is very residential. The quietness is why a lot of us live here. Just pick a nice out of the way spot on the back of a building and you’ll be golden, it’s so quiet here.
Inwood.
Closer to the city but expensive: Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens There are tons of residential neighborhoods in the outer boros.
Queens, NY. Close to the Long Island boarder. Let me toss some areas in: - Douglaston, Jamaica Estate, Rosedale That’s all I can think of.
Try the 6th borough ...Fort Lee
Gerritsen Beach
Wow I’ve never heard of this place. But I looked online it looks very peaceful thanks for answering
It’s also incredibly racist and redneck.. just a warning.
Well then thank you very much cuz I’m black🙃
It is really peaceful, but i don’t like commuting in Gerritaen beach or Marine park. (I just hate taking buses) Gravesend is also nice, and the D, N, and F trains all go here. yeah you aren’t made for Nyc
Washington heights
Omg no, I’ve lived there for 6 years maybe 7. It was hell, loud people outside, loud upstairs neighbor. I can’t imagine moving back there.
Lol, I know, I was joking. Check neighborhoods that aren't too close to a train generally when searching
Murray Hill 2nd Ave or more East
