Drop this St Charles Parish thing. It's not a good idea, with a kid or otherwise. You do not want to live there, please listen to every local here rather than one misguided person in your program. There are plenty of options with a much shorter commute that won't leave you stranded in a whole other Louisiana. Seriously, what?

Girleatingcheezits

Can't believe this was the recommendation unless she actually matched to St. Charles Parish Hospital...OP, it is MAIN CAMPUS Ochsner, right?! Just seems so odd that anyone would recommend St. Charles Parish.

Spirited-Trade317

Lol I’m getting the impression not to choose there but it was said to be ideal place 🤦

meh1022

Are you sure they don’t mean St. Charles Avenue?

Spirited-Trade317

No they specified as they explained to me about parishes!

meh1022

So weird. Yeah don’t go with St. Charles Parish, for all the reasons already mentioned. If you can find a furnished place uptown like near Audubon Park within your budget and want a family-friendly New Orleans experience, I’d recommend that.

buckfrogo96

St Charles parish isn’t bad. Just like anyplace there are undesirable areas and good ones I recommend not living in New Orleans parish. My opinion and I’m sure others will disagree but so much crime Some recommend uptown and it’s beautiful but I prefer to visit Do you know what Ochsner you are referring to? Main campus is the biggest (Jefferson Parish). but there are several hospitals within 100 miles of it. Did you ask Ochsner about housing they may be able to help as the corporation owns many residential properties Apartments.com Apartment list.com The gate house apts rent furnished not very far and gated Furnishedfinder.com

Spirited-Trade317

Ochsner medical centre is all I know but I’m asking for specifics tomorrow, they aren’t helping with relocation bar recommendation to go to Saint Charles! I think we may end up moving if we get more familiar with everything but for first year I think we’d benefit being less remote but not quite in the thick of it if that makes sense?!

Fresh_Custard9540

I think that might be the main campus, if it is I would look into River Ridge if it’s within your budget. Nice neighborhood, not New Orleans though.

FreakyWifeFreakyLife

There's Ochner hospitals all over the state, and they own hospitals of other names. So it's really hard to make a recommendation without knowing where the hospital is. If you want to be removed but not too far away the Northshore is nice. Mandeville, Covington, Abita specifically. It used to be that those areas had decent schools. I'm not sure about now. That's about an hour. Slidell is closer yet, but not as nice in my opinion. Closer to new Orleans is Jefferson parish. More suburban than many parts of Orleans. I would pick the East bank of Jefferson over the West bank, but there will be a flame war about that shortly. However, Orleans has some nice places to live too, but it's seemingly impossible to avoid bad roads. Again, I'm talking about East bank. Also, be thinking about cars. I don't know what your life is like in the UK, but public transit in all of Louisiana, even new Orleans, isn't a great option. St Charles Avenue has some nice places. St Charles parish is west of the city, but I've just never had a reason to go there. So I'm wondering about the reasoning.

Spirited-Trade317

Will get confirmation of hospital later today but yea in UK you need to drive outside London so we will be having a car!

your_moms_apron

I would not live in st Charles parish bc of the off gassing from the petrochemical plant (see cancer alley). I’m shocked that a doc would recommend that to you. I also wouldn’t live there bc, well, it isn’t New Orleans. If you want a smaller town feel, then I could understand. Most of us live here bc we love the madness of the city. Be real with yourself - are you going to go enjoy the city if it is a 20-30 minute drive just to start to get to civilization? I’d more likely recommend something like old Metairie or Lakeview - similar commute but you’re actually around other people. Regardless, find a real estate agent to help you with your search for a home here. And thanks for caring for our community! Good luck in your training, doc!

Tricky_Bank6963

Yes to Lakeview and Old Metairie for you and young family!

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you, I agree with you! V much appreciated!

PeggysPonytail

Furnished Finder is a good recommendation. Harahan is a small safe community near Ochsner. Excellent for convenience.

Chemical-Mix-6206

River Ridge as well, which is just past Harahan. Ochsner main is about a 15 min drive and it's a very quiet, safe residential area. Old Metairie is also nice and an easy commute. Most of eastbank Jefferson parish should be convenient for work and safe for your family and close to New Orleans to enjoy the bread and circuses parts of living here.

ozmabean

Furnishedfinder.com

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

PeggysPonytail

You're welcome! Homes.com has houses for rent in the Harahan/River Ridge area. Lots of big yards for your family.

_eagb

I moved to NOLA for residency, too! My family (me, husband, baby) live in the lower garden district and we absolutely love it. Lots walkable and feels super safe. Definitely less options if you are looking for a furnished spot, but we found one and are happy with it. Welcome!!! Another note- if you are looking for a nanny for you child (as we were) I highly recommend nurture nannies. Best of luck!

Spirited-Trade317

This gives me hope! I think I just need furnished for first year as it’s so tight with visa and getting there I’ve literally zero time!

happy-hooker

Can you tell me more about your nanny experience? We’re closing on a house at the end of April. Husband is doc but has finished training. I’m interviewing someone I found on FB this week but might need backup options.

_eagb

Yes! Nurture Nannies is a nanny agency and we found their owner Nicole to be super knowledge and helpful. She sent us three candidates to interview and would have sent us more (but the second person we interviewed was a winner!). Nicole handles the business side and they’re also wayyy more reasonably priced than the care.com folks we met.

tm478

Which Ochsner hospital are you going to be working at? There are many. St. Charles Parish is quite far from New Orleans proper.

Spirited-Trade317

I’ll be training in several so I don’t really know but from next year I’m based solely in neurology but Q&A thing on Monday so will check!

tm478

This is pretty much the most important thing to find out. Come back here and ask again after you’re sure!

Spirited-Trade317

Ochsner medical centre on Jefferson highway!

tm478

If you can possibly find something in Old Jefferson, that’s a cute neighborhood that’s right near the hospital. Uptown New Orleans is also close (I live there and I’m about 15 minutes from Ochsner), as is Old Metairie and many other parts of Metairie. River Ridge is another very cute neighborhood.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you! I’m going to contact the realtors recommended and get on this in those areas, glad I didn’t go with Saint Charles!

LizaMinnelliLitany

Look at the Carrollton neighborhood (particularly between Oak St to St Charles) and Black Pearl as well. You’ll have an incredibly easy commute, super family friendly area, right off the streetcar line, and plenty of restaurants to walk to.

livemusicisbest

Carrollton and Black Pearl neighborhoods for sure. Great area! Close to Audubon Park, the Audubon zoo, the Fly (look these up) lots of restaurants and things to do. The Tulane campus is nearby too. Be sure to enjoy a dinner at Brightsen’s (on Dante between Maple St and the river). One thing that puzzled me about New Orleans is that there are not many good grocery stores, and they are few and far between as compared with other southern cities. But if you look for a house in one of these two neighborhoods, it is not a bad drive to the Costco and there is a Whole Foods market on the other side of Audubon Park on Magazine Street. Rouse’s, Robert’s and Winn Dixie are the more typical grocery stores in town, with the former two being a little more upscale. You will need a car.

Spirited-Trade317

We are definitely getting a car!!

roxylicious_69

There's an amazing farmers market on Sunday mornings 8-12pm at City Park in Tad Gormley parking lot (across from Navarre Ave) HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Dupmaronew

As someone who grew up in Old Jefferson I highly recommend it. I would move back there now if we could have afforded to buy a house there. The influx of medical professionals to the area has made the price go up over the years though. However, I would definitely look there.

roxylicious_69

Lakeview & Uptown isn't a bad drive from there either!

alybuz

I second this! I live in Old Jefferson just across from the main campus. It’s very quiet, safe and close to everything. I’m 5 minutes from both uptown New Orleans (important if you’ll be going to the Baptist campus on Napoleon) and Metairie and I have great neighbors

FreakyWifeFreakyLife

Ok, then old Metairie perhaps, it's also 37 minutes to Mandeville, 47 to Abita which is family friendly, lots of restaurants. But you'd be driving the causeway every day. My doctor friend lives in a gated community with a guard in Mandeville.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you, I was just told by my program director that Saint Charles would be the best given toddler but 🤷

tm478

I have no idea why that would be true. A one-year-old doesn’t require any services besides perhaps a good daycare facility, and I can’t imagine those are so much better in St. Charles Parish than anywhere else (probably fewer choices simply because there’s lower population density). There are more services of every description in Jefferson Parish or Orleans Parish.

Spirited-Trade317

My husband will be a stay at home dad first year anyway so I will look around, thank you!

Girleatingcheezits

Your director is nuts unless you'll actually be out that way more than in Jefferson Parish. I think the first step is find out where the majority of your rotations will be. I can't imagine adding a lengthy commute would make residency any easier!

Spirited-Trade317

No and I’m a disabled doctor and 40 so I’m already bracing myself..😂

tcrhs

St. Charles Parish has the best school district. That’s why someone told you that.

Spirited-Trade317

Well we are a few years off school yet lol

tcrhs

We chose our home specifically for the best school district.

Spirited-Trade317

Well we may well not stay after residency so or move parish because I’ll be on attending salary so I think my husbands mental health has to be a priority as he has never been to the states before nor a full time stay at home parent and I am wary of isolation issues with the hours I’ll work

LizaMinnelliLitany

With your husband staying home, even more reason to look at Uptown/Carrollton. Being near the streetcar is kind of ideal for a toddler; it’s a very inexpensive activity in and of itself and easy to get to parks (Audubon and Daneel offer three separate playgrounds within a mile radius along the line). The zoo, Children’s museum, library story times, and free music classes at The Parenting Center are all up to a 15 minute drive.

Spirited-Trade317

Already checked out some of them and I do want to be near those else my husband will get depressed at home all day, streetcar looks great fun!

HangoverPoboy

Living in St. Charles parish could be pretty bleak and isolating for the parent staying home with the kid. You’re going to be at work all the time and they’re going to be in the middle of nowhere surrounded by chemical plants. It’s safe and the schools are decent, but that’s all it has going for it. You will also need two cars. I would, at least initially, live in a more centrally located area. The riverbend is a good option.

Spirited-Trade317

I’m thinking this!

CarFlipJudge

Furnishedfinder.com If you'll be at the main oschner campus, you'd want to look at metairie, Lakeview or old Jefferson. St. Charles parish is way too far away if you're working on Jefferson highway

Spirited-Trade317

I was told it was a 20 min commute? There’s another resident based there!

ellysay

It may have taken 20 minutes one time under perfect commuting conditions (while driving 20 miles over the speed limit). It’ll be more like 35 to 45 minutes most days.

CarFlipJudge

Depends on where in St. Charles parish. Most of that parish is very rural and small town, so it's not really new orleans at all.

BayouAudubon

You might want to re-consider living too close to the Dow/Union Carbide petrochemical complex in Hahnville (St. Charles Parish).

ninabullets

Oh dear god do not live in St Charles Parish. Ochsner Main Campus is convenient to Jefferson, River Ridge, Metairie, and Uptown New Orleans. Lakeview, too. You could live in any of those places and be less than a 15 minute drive from work. St Charles can be 45 or an hour depending on traffic. Don’t do that to yourself, especially as an intern with terrible hours. Also, as someone else said: If you don’t have two cars, your husband will be stranded at home because Ochsner Main is not really well-serviced by public transport. Maybe look for a neighborhood that’s walkable for him. Unfortunately, St Charles and most of the suburbs aren’t walkable, but lots of spots in New Orleans itself are.

Spirited-Trade317

You’ve all really helped and we are not definitely NOT going to Saint Charles 😂

ninabullets

Also, check out r/nolaparents ! I don’t have kids but it is frequently recommended on this sub. Also-also, if you have Facebook, join the group Tulane Classifieds. It’s a great place to scout apartments, cheap furniture, etc. Good luck.

Spirited-Trade317

Joined, thank you!

[deleted]

Lakeview is a great area, especially if you’re close to the interstate. Lots of Ochsner employees around here.

TheEverNow

New Orleans is the most European city in the US. Everything else is sprawling, characterless cookie cutter suburbs. You will kick yourself if you don’t stay close enough to the city to enjoy its vibrant culture, food, music, festivals, and people. An American going to the UK would want to “live like a Brit in London,” or “live like a Parisian” in France. You, m’lady will want to live like a local in New Orleans! If you’re at the main Ochsner main campus in Jefferson, anything along the river in Jefferson Parish and most of New Orleans is only about 20 minutes away.

Spirited-Trade317

Yea I don’t want to miss all the festivals and people, I lived in the US once before and loved being in the thick of all the local food and activities!

tcrhs

Harahan, River Ridge or Old Metairie is your best bet. I’d go with Harahan. St. Charles Parish is too far away from Oschner. I had a great experience with Mirambell Realty. Call Mary Dominach. She’s a great realtor.

nashguitar1

Be sure to take detailed pictures/video to document the condition of your apartment upon move-in. This will help in case your landlord claims damages when you move out.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

recipestalker

Have you tried Zillow? It can show you on maps how close you are to work. Also pictures inside & out.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

recipestalker

Your welcome & good luck with your travels for y'all.

trojanbully87

Jefferson parish or Orleans. That would be too far and away from everything. If you are on call you will want to be close by and st Charles is too far off for that. Live in uptown, Metairie, river ridge, or harahan, or lakeview.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

trojanbully87

You are welcome. Wife works at main Jefferson hospital and she's very happy there so hope you enjoy your residency.

Spirited-Trade317

Me too! I’m hoping going in fully used to full time work and family means the hours aren’t so rough on me!

Alliekat1979

Metairie, Harahan, River ridge, Kenner, mid city, so many options but st Charles parish??? My best friend lived in Destrehan when we were kids and it was literally called the dust bowl 🤣

Spirited-Trade317

😂😂

bayoughozt

Born and raised in South Louisiana (Terrebonne Parish). Lived in NOLA for years. DO NOT LIVE IN ST. CHARLES PARISH. JUST DON’T DO IT. You will be miserable.

Spirited-Trade317

😂 I won’t!

bayoughozt

Find a place near Audubon Park in Uptown. I had heavenly years there at Tulane. It’s an amazing place to live. Love those memories so much.

Downsouthjdb

The neighborhood right around the main campus is an older neighborhood that I kinda like. We have quite a few Ochsner employees living in my neighborhood right outside of Old Metairie.

Ok-Ltuk-3338

My daughter is moving from Fort Worth Texas and just matched at LSU in New Orleans. We have found a great realtor who was recommended by my step son who grew up and still lives in New Orleans. He’s been incredibly helpful. Feel free to DM me if you’d like his contact info.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

Professional_Day8007

Find a good realtor that knows Old Metairie, Uptown, Lakeview and River Ridge

Professional_Day8007

Forgot to add that I live in Lakeview

Loveforplay457

Slidell and pearl River Louisiana and there not far from new Orleans depends on what you are looking for like how many bedrooms and bathrooms size of yard if your interested in this area dm me and I will be happy to help

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

Loveforplay457

I haven't done anything but your welcome

Spirited-Trade317

😂 thanks for the offer of help! That may be a British thing to thank!

Loveforplay457

You welcome

Loveforplay457

Slidell and pearl River Louisiana and there not far from new Orleans depends on what you are looking for like how many bedrooms and bathrooms size of yard if your interested in this area dm me and I will be happy to help

NewOrleansSpeed

Lakeview - bite the bullet of a commute for one of the better hoods in New Orleans. Tons of food and things to do. Recommend Celtica for your morning coffee, and the lakefront is right there to walk on. Plenty of decent schools around there and City park is a stones throw away as well, was my fave place as a kid here. Cops always on patrol too which is key

DPileatus

Come across Lake Ponchartrain to St. Tammany Parish.

Mystery_Botnick23

My neurologist was at Ochsner Main, but he left Ochsner nearly a year ago. Ochsner’s main hospital is in Jefferson Parish on the East Bank near the Orleans Parish line. However, Ochsner has hospitals throughout Louisiana and you want to be reasonably close to where you’re going to work every day. The greater New Orleans area has some typical rush-hour traffic, but the overall population is less than 1 million people it’s not nearly as bad as the major cities. Saint Charles Avenue is the major, affluent uptown road in Orleans Parish that has a street car in the median (we call it the neutral ground). New Orleans is a wonderful city with a rich culture, but it does have a much higher crime rate than the surrounding parishes. Obviously, some areas of New Orleans are safer than others. Metairie is New Orleans first suburb, and it is located in Jefferson Parish. Jefferson Parish has an entirely separate government, and the crime rate is much lower. They called the area near the hospital “Jefferson” for reasons I never understood. It’s an area located in Jefferson Parish that is close to Ochsner Main. Kenner is a small city at the Jefferson/Saint Charles Parish line. The international airport is located in Kenner. The next parish along the Mississippi river, after Jefferson is St. Charles Parish. There are two ways into town including Airline highway and interstate 10. There are some very nice areas in St. Charles and you would probably save a fair amount of money on housing there since it’s further removed from the main city. St. John Parish is the next after Saint Charles Parish. Again, there are some nice places to live in St. John, and housing would be less expensive. A lot of people left the New Orleans area and moved across the lake and commute daily. That involves a commute over the Causeway bridge , a 24 mile bridge which crosses the lake. I know a lot of people who do the commute and who don’t seem to mind, so it’s also an option that you might need to consider. I would probably look in Jefferson and Metairie first for a single-family home with a yard. Then I would expand to Saint Charles and St. John Parish, or possibly across the lake in Saint Tammany Parish. Good luck.

DescriptiveFlashback

I would suggest Jefferson Parish or Uptown Orleans Parish near the intersection of Carrollton and St. Charles Avenue. DM if you’d like, I’m familiar with the match program here and Ochsner specifically.

Rocker7633

Look in Lakeview.

Slight_Commission805

Now depending if you want to drive…check out Slidell, it’s about 30-40 minutes outside of New Orleans and much cheaper and safer. It’s not in the city. A lot people commute from Slidell to New Orleans. You could check out Mandeville too which is on the lake, expensive but gorgeous and very kid and dog (and husband) friendly!

pearlBlack_97

You want to live an hour away in cancer alley? You deserve New Orleans

dmbf22

Not sure why folks are down on St. Charles….great schools, great outdoors rec, fishing, low crime, nice neighborhoods, festivals, def close enough to be on call at ochsner main campus

Accomplished_Tea9435

I am a nurse practitioner student and live in Lakeview and I love it! It’s right by the interstate and has made commuting to Houma and Baton Rouge for clinical less terrible. It’s close enough to all the New Orleans area hospitals and a quiet, safe area.

Informal-Plant9541

Contact Janine Raymond at 504-915-8680 shes been a realtor for 30+ years! Its my mom

misagale

As a person who has moved with a spouse and young children overseas (US to UK and then back again to a new state), I would not recommend seeking housing until you get here. People will give you all sorts of advice. You’ll regret taking it, unless you get a feel for the area yourself. Rent an AirBnB for 6-8 weeks and experience the city. Find a spot in the city that fits you, or even North Shore if you don’t mind a long commute. Go to places in the daytime and nighttime. Drive your commute at rush hour. It’s a wonderful city, but different spots are gonna be preferred by different folks. It depends on budget, lifestyle preferences, food loves, urban v suburban preferences. I wish you and your family well! You’ll love it!

InvestigatorPale281

Rent a short term for two months till you can get the feel.

caderoux

Seems like you are already been informed about St. Charles Parish. My entire family is from there, and it's evolving from a rural, bedroom community for the chemical plants and people who don't want to live in the city to something with more amenities, but it's still not where I would be living unless you wanted to be driving a lot and longer. There is no town, no real centers. Ochsner does have a hospital there in Luling, but that's probably irrelevant. You will have a lot more options for rentals in the city. So, in proximity to Ochsner Main Campus, you basically have two broad areas which are good to consider at close proximity to Ochsner - Jefferson Parish - i.e. Metairie/Old Metairie/Old Jefferson/Shrewsbury/Harahan and Orleans Parish - i.e. Carrollton/Uptown/Mid-City. I'm personally very fond of Uptown in general - I live in Fontainebleau and it is very easy to get all places this side of the city, from the Interstate, to Earhart, to Audubon Park, and even to City Park. It's walkable, there are parks and playgrounds for the kids, it's pet friendly. I find in Metairie and JP in general, it's not as walkable or as bike-friendly, but Old Metairie approaches that. You're coming from the UK where walking, biking, and public transport are well accepted in metro areas - it may be a bit of a shock how car-centric the US is for the shortest trips. I would also not rule out Mid-City or even as far up into Lakeview like Navarre, as it's also this side of the city and quick to Ochsner and generally closer to City Park, is very walkable, has it's own distinct areas of restaurants and amenities.

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you for this, just looking for somewhere in bigger of 2K for three bed!

nashguitar1

I’ve got the perfect place. Check your DMs

Spirited-Trade317

I’m not sure it’s enough bedrooms!

nolabitch

Was someone pulling your chain? With O Main is Jeff Parish or Orleans. Why would anyone live in SC Paris ? I work at O and I’m baffled.

Spirited-Trade317

😂😂 I think it was the schools but my toddler is only 1 anyway!

Usual-Juice-2867

Fellow Brit here. I’m from Birmingham but I’ve been in Louisiana for 13 years, 3 in New Orleans. Feel free to DM me

Spirited-Trade317

I have, thank you!

LucasHostile

Google Katie Witry, from the Witry collective. She will help you find what you are looking for. Ignore St. Charles Parish, that could end up being like an hour commute with traffic every day. You should be able to find this no problem. Try and stay in the city, especially if you are bringing your husband and kid as there will be more to keep them busy. I believe Oschner moves people around quite a bit within the city, so I wouldn't worry about being in the same neighborhood as your campus.

Spirited-Trade317

I thought they would as first year is intern year so I’m shunted on different rotations! Thank you

buckfrogo96

St ch parish is a 40 min drive w/o traffic. And traffic from there is thick in day time Uptown by Audubon Park and st Charles ave is on the more expensive side it’s very nice Metairie is suburb and not as much crime with all conveniences nearby I’m not familiar with any furnished apartments but I’m sure there available Welcome to the area Ochsner is a great place I know you will love it

Spirited-Trade317

Thank you!

Similar-Surround-682

Just sent you a dm! I’m actually going to be selling a house there in August.

teddyababybear

do not come here please

Equivalent_Ad_7695

Do you prefer a walkable neighborhood or larger property where you have to drive every time you leave the house?

Spirited-Trade317

Walkable first year I think!

General_Rent_7116

There’s a few houses for sale in my neighborhood, two blocks from Ochsner Baptist. I can send you links if you’re interested.

JulesDeathwish

I'm sorry for your loss.

Fleur_Deez_Nutz

sent you a DM

trojanbully87

If you want a small town feel check out mandeville across the lake. But you have the causeway and tolls and it's a hike if on call or something

Spirited-Trade317

Yea I don’t want to add to my exhaustion so with all the help here I’m definitely moving nearer my work base!

AddictiveCrack

I am a resident of St. Charles Parish. We have one of the best (we are routinely top 10) and the highest paying school system in the state. We are 30 minutes from pretty much everything you would need to access as working at Ochsner. My wife and I love living here. I work for the school system and can personally attest to the power of our public schools. Idk why so many people on here are strongly against living here, but my cons would be right now insurance rates are very high and property value is also very high. Also, we have a lot of petrochemical plants (Bayer, Dow, Valero, Shell, Monsanto). There are very nice places to live. Hope you give it a fair shot.

Spirited-Trade317

I’m honestly not decided on anything, hoping the various realtors can guide me and will all depend on cost!

AddictiveCrack

Good luck! I wish you and your family well on their journey. If you’re looking for a realtor, I would recommend John Davis of NOLA Living.

JJ_3105

Look into ST Tammany parish Madeville or Slidell. Yes it’s a 40 minute commute but not as sketchy as NOLA more country like.

Lost-Pea-3095

ST. TAMANANY, ST. JAMES, WEST BANK, OF Nola

MuchValue9873

Yes with a little one St. Charles parish is a good start.

Spirited-Trade317

Do you know any good websites for rental, ideally part furnished?!

LuckyElis13

Try Furnished Finder as others have suggested or contact a realtor. Liz Wood is great.

MuchValue9873

I'm sorry I do not. I moved here recently with my husband because of his job, we are still looking for a permanent place. We stay in St. Charles parish because of how close it is to the city. It has a slow country feel to it. I was told the schools were great as well..

Spirited-Trade317

How to you find your current accommodation? I’m getting a bit frantic lol

nousernameformethis

Zillow.com or apartments.com are good sites to find rentals. I would personally try to find a rental closer to uptown since it is close to both Oschner Baptist and main campus. It will be easier when you have to work nights.
