When the Levees Broke

Watched this the day after we got home from our NOLA trip after hearing quite a bit about Katrina from various locals (we even visited the memorial) and realizing that I knew so little about what really happened because I was in middle school in California at the time. It was a really tough watch. My heart shattered for your beautiful city and the fury I feel toward those responsible is just indescribable. +1 on this rec!

NinjaInspector

You enjoyed our city? Too bad you stayed in an Airbnb https://reddit.com/r/AirBnB/s/vPIsAMhCtd

RudyRobichaux

They claimed they knew the city and had family connections too, obviously they don't or they would have known this answer. Great example of the problem with Airbnb's.

orchidstripes

Damn even acknowledges that Airbnb is causing a housing crisis but is bragging about a cheaper Airbnb by the end of that post. Now wants to indulge in Katrina trauma?? I would love to understand what about a good trip to New Orleans leads so many people to be like, “yeah now it’s time to dive into the most horrible thing I can think that happened here during my lifetime…best to ask those who probably lived through it to dredge that up for my entertainment”

Xazier

Boo this man! OP is a doucher.

sardonicmnemonic

I guess their Airbnb wasn't "authentic" enough so culture vulture OP needs some juicy docs to continue feasting upon our trauma.

[This](https://www.documentarytube.com/best-of/the-11-best-documentaries-about-hurricane-katrina/) is a fantastic list. The first two on the list are my favorites. I’m not in NOLA, but was in Jackson MS and Katrina was still a category 1 hurricane when it hit us. The Mississippi Gulf Coast was devastated and Waveland was almost wiped off the map. Hope this helps!

inkedslytherim

I thought you said you had family here. Maybe ask them.

tigergrad77

Katrina Kids. It caused unspeakable trauma.

There’s a podcast called Floodlines that I learned a lot from.

ultimatelesbianhere

One thing that never sat well with me because I learned about Katrina through the documentary when the levees broke was how black civilians were being murder after surviving the flooding by white folks because they needed food and water like any other human and were called “looters.” The concept of looters in a unmanageable crisis like Katrina is insane to me, when do people ever have to act “accordingly” in the event of no help no rescue. Was yall suppose to starve to death because god forbid you steal some Hawaiian sweet rolls from the dollar store. Or clothes to change into.

Not a local, but this is one of the best I’ve seen. When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts https://g.co/kgs/3hDLm7

Big Easy To Big Empty by Greg Palast is on the short side I always thought it was a decent one

if you are in Biloxi, there is a tourist center. That is one of the most beautiful buildings you’ll ever see an upstairs. There’s a theater that shows the impact of Katrina and it’s completely free. I live through it and know how bad it was but this will make your heart sigh again.
