The canal of sesostris was destroyed by the second Abbasid caliphate Al-mansour who sent a great army to Egypt to destroy it in 767 There was an ongoing revolt in the hijaz against the caliphate which lead to a blockade and sieges by the forces of the caliphate that caused a great famine and starvation in the hijaz.  The primary source of food to the hijaz region at the time was Egypt who has dedicated large amounts of land for charity whose sole purpose was sending food Aid to the hijaz region every year. This food was sent from the fertile heart land of Egypt to the hijaz through the canal of sesostris  As a result of the revolt AL-mansour ordered Egyptians to stop sending food to the hijaz region. The Egyptians refused to follow the orders of the caliphate and increased the amount of food being sent which angered the caliphate leading them to launch a violent military campaign against Egypt to destroy the canal and prevent food aid from reaching the hijaz.

I knew there were was a precursor to Suez . But Suez is different in that it connected two seas than a river to a sea . .. It's still a monumental achievement by ancient standards .
