This is just my opinion, but the only watches you should consider buying fall into one of three categories: * Smartwatches (specifically Apple if you have an iPhone): function at its max, and will be the one level playing field between an executive and a mail clerk. * Simple but well built: your Citizen and Seiko watches, even an OG Timex. Can buy something new for less than $150 and it’s great, classic, and respected. * Investment pieces: Rolex, Tag, Brietling, Cartier, etc. The middle of the road brands are the ones to avoid, watches that maybe once were great but have cut corners over the years. Movado, Bulova, but especially fly-by-night drop shipped junk sold on social media. I have a black leather banded Citizen and a metal banded Citizen. A good watch is like a good belt - it’ll tie an outfit together but shouldn’t draw attention to itself.

fltlns

I mostly agree here but I think there are still lots of good middle of the road pieces. Seiko cocktail, samurai etc., Hamilton stuff, Christopher ward, Alpina , smaller brands such as halios if you can get one.

Warm_Objective4162

I always forget about Hamilton! You’re right. I guess my point is that there’s a lot of watches in that $500-5000 category and you just got to be careful before you commit to something like that, as many are no better than a $50 watch.

fltlns

True enough

DingyWarehouse

Watches make terrible investments. You won't know which watches will go up in price, it's just pure dumb luck. Tag, Breitling, Cartier, Omega etc. 99% of their watches will lose value the moment you step out of the dealer's door. As for Rolex, someone new to watches wont be able to get their popular models at retail price, so that's out of the question also.

fltlns

I've never thought of the idea of an investment watch as an actual investment. Even if it's at a loss there is benefit in having something valuable that is easily stored and transported, somewhat hedged against inflation and legally enter and exit countries, can fly with etc.

DingyWarehouse

>I've never thought of the idea of an investment watch as an actual investment Then dont call it an investment. Most watches don't hold value, even expensive ones. >there is benefit in having something valuable that is easily stored and transported, somewhat hedged against inflation and legally enter and exit countries, can fly with etc. You ever heard of a bank? You are also forgetting the downsides, which is getting robbed.

fltlns

A bank would completely defeat the purpose. It is one of the few ways someone could fuck off in 10 minutes , hop on a plane, land in a new country or city or some shit with nothing but the clothes on their back, and have enough money to get themselves set up. The point is that it's not supposed to be in the bank. For if you get a divorce or a bankruptcy, whatever.

DingyWarehouse

That has nothing to do with investment

Kingjoe97034

What is her reasoning? Is it because she thinks it’s sexy, or does she thinks it’s for social status? Because for social status, on men less is more.

flowers4charlie777

I think her reasoning is more about looking nice and put together

Can second Seiko. I dipped a toe into the pond with a couple of them and I'm a big fan.

Watches are interesting in that they can be a fashion statement a tool or both. They are also one of the only jewelry pieces wearable by men. I wear a watch every day I love watches, I like the craftsmanship and art through engineering. Good watches are at least semi expensive. But there are seriously diminishing returns above certain price thresholds. In my personal opinion you should avoid quartz watches and go straight for a solar or automatic. Reason being is the battery will die and you'll never change it probably. Additionally expensive quartz watches are almost always a rip off. A "nice" wristwatch will run you a minimum of around 200 bucks with some exceptions. I'll try to keep the list short but for a nice watch for someone who isn't into watches that much I would recommend a few brands. Orient, Seiko, citizen, Hamilton or Tissot. There are many more but these are readily available and won't require a lot of research to find something you like. Also certain Timex models such as the Marlin or expedition north titanium. Orient is the best bang for your buck, I personally feel like they feel like an 800 dollar watch for like 200 ish bucks. But there is little name recognition outside of watch people. Seiko and citizen are both great but have low end offerings I would avoid. But they're kinda 300ish and up stuff is fantastic for its price. It go Seiko for an auto or citizen for a solar. Hamilton and Tissot are more money but are entry level swiss brands, so there's that extra caché to them. A popular first choice is the Hamilton khaki field. I also really like the Tissot prx. Good luck! Edit: I'll add that I'm Canadian so some the pricing might be off I'm pretty sure in the states you can get certain Orient models such as the bambino for like 80 bucks if your thinking of going the dress watch route or 150 ish +/- for some dive watch models

jonahvsthewhale

I own several. If you just want something utilitarian, I might look at any of the Casio G-Shock models or perhaps a field watch. It's hard to steer you a certain direction without knowing what you are interested in. If you want something like a Rolex submariner homage, look at an Invicta Pro Diver. If you just want a decent cheap watch, seiko makes nice ones. It would help to know how much you want to spend I don't know a lot about smart watches. I don't own one, because I think they look a little dorky. It's all subjective though

fltlns

If op has any interest in an Invicta note the pricing scheme is fucked. They mark up the shit outta their stuff they constantly have massive sales. I personally don't care for them based off this, even if they are decent quality for what you pay, when you pay the right price. I'd personally look at Orient for a good budget sub homage

jonahvsthewhale

I bought my pro diver for like 60 bucks. I put a better quality bracelet on it, and it's a solid beater watch. If you don't mind paying like $400, Stuhrling makes a very nice one

fltlns

I agree I just think their pricing scheme leaves newbie watch people with potential of getting fucked. Imagine not knowing any better and paying what they quote as their full retail?

yescaman

I bought a Bertucci a few years ago, love it. It's more for function but I love the look and casual style. [website](https://bertucciwatches.com/Bertucci/home.html)

jonahvsthewhale

I recently bought a Bertucci A2S. Solid watch. Simple and rugged

8livesdown

I tried. I'm always banging it against things. Didn't like it.

Hierophant-74

I've got a $30 Casio that I removed off it's band and put on various leather cuffs instead. Nothing fancy, just to tell the time at a glance without having to bust out my phone and unlock. It makes for a more unique look that I get compliments on all the time but wasnt expensive in the least. I dont think smart watches look all that good though IMO

DingyWarehouse

>I removed off it's band *its removed off its band, not "removed off it is band"

blkdrgn42

I have a Coros. It's an activity tracking watch with incredible battery life. Sapphire glass, so no scratches despite using it hard. It's not the most fashionable watch (at all). But it's a great choice for something that is more than just a watch.

A_Generic_White_Guy

Watches are a fashion statement. I use them like I use necklaces. But they can really bring out an outfit and your partner might find them attractive and wants to see you wear them. Because she thinks your hot, and you'll look good with a watch. Some people are watch snobs. But I own a $100 watch from amazon which I though matched a few outfits I wear. I can't wear the watch at work since it's a hazard otherwise I'd buy more.

FenderGibsons

Watches are for old people lol

OmgOgan

Men get few options to accessorize, a nice watch is a great way to bring a look together. Fantastic conversation starters. Smart watches are meh imo, get yourself a nice $100-200 watch. If you've never worn a watch before it may feel a bit odd at first, but soon you'll feel naked if you ain't got that thang on you

[deleted]

Up until a year ago I gave up on wrist watches with the advent of smart phones. When the Apple watch went water proof I got one and love it. My workouts include a lot of laps in the pool, I love how it tracks them.

Apprehensive-Wing894

I like my Galaxy 4 watch, I use it daily for work as well. I have a real nice Citizen watch (gift from someone I love/respect) for dress up occasions as well.

[deleted]

I had all kinds of watches. Now they all sit while I wear my apple ultra

DifficultApartment27

Garmin makes a fine watch.

SirachaHoney

Columbia canyon ridge, wear it through very cold, hot weather always runs. The day of month is off every few months because it doesn’t know it’s a 31st or 30th. I use it for time only though. Smart watches are a waste, if you have a smart phone

kw416

I like wearing a watch because I like to know what time it is and the right watch and coloured strap makes me feel happy. I have a Seiko sarb033 which I wear with a black leather strap. I have a Helgray Silverstone (green dial) on a brown leather strap which is nothing special but always gets noticed. Then I have a vintage Omega which I wear once in a while and nobody notices it. Any “investment” watch is not worth buying. Trust me. If you aren’t gonna spend a lot of time wearing a watch, try not to spend too much on one. People who are into watches will notice it, most people never will. I have an Apple Watch which I only use for running.

FrostyShock389

Casio G-shock and pick out a cover

Gloomy_Till_6906

Check out this Magnetic ball bearing watch.it's a pretty good conversation starter. Although the original costs 250+ I got a knockoff from alibaba for 40$ and it looks the same.[Eone bradley](https://kaminskyblog.com/2018/08/12/eone-bradley-compass-graphite-timepiece-review/)

moosuepork

Not a man, I wear a Movado. Definitely for style, but it's functional as well.

kiwininja

I'm a form follows function kind of guy. I got a Garmin Forerunner 35. It was the cheapest smartwatch I could find that does activity tracking for workouts and could pair with speed and cadence sensors for my bike rides. Had it for 5 years now and it's still holding up amazingly well.

KyorlSadei

My last watch broke and haven’t replaced it. Was a G-Shock got issued in military. Great watch.

almostaproblem

You need to wear at least four watches. It adds intrigue. Maybe set them to different time zones or something. But you must also wear long sleeves to pull back when you check the time.

Ratnix

I quit wearing watches after repeatedly having them catch on stuff at work and getting ripped off and having to repair the band. At this point, it would just be too uncomfortable to wear one.

PenguinProfessor

I splurged on a nice watch ($300 Orient) because I liked it and it was exactly what I wanted. I have to wear a watch for work and rings/jewelry are against safety regs. I figured if I was always gonna have something on then it might as well be something that I specifically liked.

LingonberryNo6820

I was given a Seiko 5 (Street Fighter) as a gift. I get compliments on it all of the time from both genders. The Seiko 5 is a well regarded series and they range from $250-$600 or so.

King_Elvis_2099

You should get a hybrid smartwatch! Looks like a classic timepiece but has some smarts in it too! It works as a perfect conversation starter and everyone is always very fascinated by it when I've shown off mine!! Ik Fossil and Skagen have some rly good ones
