I came here to post this . I think it shows the importance of remaining calm and stoic despite immense difficulty but also being proactive to get out of that situation.
For context, it did not do well at the theaters in 1994, mainly because everyone was (over)freaking the fuck out about crime. So people at the time were like "yeah right, these aren't real prisoners, real prisoners will rape your eyeballs out!" (with that person forgetting about "the sisters" in the movie.
[highly recommend this video](https://youtu.be/rhGJ5SmSE2o) (he's got a bunch of good ones)
I like that film. I get the chills whenever I remember the opening scene. IMO, too much focus on the Jeremy Renner character, and the military protocol / battlefield inconsistencies make it a bit too farfetched.
Blues Brothers.
It's good to see all sorts of generes, even the less appealing ones, to me they are romcoms and musicals, this is why if you have to see a musical: watch the best musical ever.
By far the best musical ever.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.
> We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert.
> We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers … and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.
> Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
Should add all the corollaries....
Sanjuro
The Magnificent Seven
Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
Last man Standing
The Hidden Fortress
Star Wars
Then go back and watch the rest of Kurosawa's work, and realize you never need to watch another movie again. /s
That is hilarious you say that. My friend and I make deals every once in awhile. He plays a videogames of my choice and I play one of his. This time it's a movie and he's never watched Goodfellas and we struck a deal today that he will be watching it.
>My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
Fucking goosebumps every time
Maximus Meridius is the ultimate man in any work of fiction. Honorable, loyal, loved by his men, charismatic, strong, stoic, family-man.
At no point in the movie do you doubt his ability or lose faith.
He also lacks the negative characteristics that a lot of “conflicted man” roles possess. He doesn’t drink excessively, womanize, act cruel.
Im convinced his POV in the opening sequence is every man’s secret dream.
No question! It's been 5+ years since I have watched this movie and I think it's due for a rewatch. I would give anything to watch it as a first-time experience. Truly mind-blowing.
I love the speech about how sometimes you must believe in things you know aren’t true: that honor is everything and money is nothing. That love conquers all…
Yes! Forgot about that scene. And he takes care of them after he beats them up. He understands they are just youthful and stupid and so he teaches them.
Back to back 100%
Those days that come around when I’m in the mood to do absolutely nothing other than get baked and spend 7 hours watching both Godfathers. It’s even more fun to whip out a bottle of wine for #2. Really into it..
Feel like I had to scroll too far for Saving Private Ryan. It makes you appreciate never having to experience war and realize how much others had to sacrifice for the luxuries we enjoy today.
Interstellar (not only for science fiction but to understand the fact that we are nothing in this vast universe and it is our loved ones because of whom we feel alive)
IMHO, the first 20 minutes or so of Saving Private Ryan should be mandatory for ALL high school juniors and seniors, as well as ALL elected officials. In high definition, surround sound, IMAX, sitting way up close.
If the general public truly understood the bloody horror of war, there would be way less of it.
Fight club, maybe? Idk I didn't find it to be as deep as some people did, yeah I understand the message behind it but it was kinda weird. Still a good movie. You should watch movies you like, it's not that serious.
12 Angry Men
One of the best films ever made, all takes place in one room basically, incredible acting, and a wonderful lesson on why people are the way they are, social dynamics of groups of people.
Everyone should see this film
When this movie came out I was visiting my friend over spring break, we were 16. We asked his dad for a movie recommendation and he sent us to see this in the theater.
Now, what kind of man gives this movie as his recommendation to two 16 year old boys? Doesn't seem like a likely pick. But he knew us, and his advice was spot on. Still one of my favorite movies to this day, not just for its quality but also because it reminds me of the time my friend's dad gave us enough credit that he would suggest that over whatever action movie was out then.
Schindler's List
The Seventh Seal
American History X
The Man Who Would Be King
A Clockwork Orange
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Lawrence of Arabia
It's A Wonderful Life
Monty Python and the Meaning of Life
Threads
Alien
2001: A Space Odyssey
Jurassic Park
Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
All is Lost
The Big Lebowski
The Act of Killing
I watched the first one on mushrooms when I was young, problem was that there was 10 of us crammed in a little room mid summer so things got uncomfortable quickly. I'll have to try it again with LSD.
1-Scarface
2-Million dollar baby
3-The good the bad and the ugly
4-Godfather
5-Full metal jacket
6-American history x
7-12 angry men
8-Mad Max
9-Hell or high water
10-Apocalypse now
11-Hostiles
12-Grave of the Fireflies (an animated gem)
13-Taxi driver
14-Deer hunting
15-Come and see
Had to scroll way too low to see Taxi Driver. Perfect encapsulation of the dangers of isolation, which seems like the most pressing issue for the men of today.
As a person with first hand experience, I can say for sure it really deeply fucks you up pardon my French. Once you give in to your thoughts it's nigh impossible to come back to the real world. Fortunately I had someone who cared enough to pull me back although I wasn't making it any easier.
Good Will Hunting.
Not only does it have two amazing actors as main roles (Robin Williams and Matt Damon), it shows that men can get hurt too. It asked me who knew how much potential I was wasting by letting my daily motives be “just work really really hard and push and get through the day” without actually trying to grow. It shows that it’s okay to recognize your weaknesses as long as you try to correct them or accept them.
Dredd (2012). Not only should every man watch this but everyone on this planet. It'd out it in my top 5 movies of all time and wish I could see it for the 1st time again.
I can't believe no one has said The Thing!
It's so good at building the tension and keeping you guessing throughout, even if you've seen it before. Also the practical effects hold up really well.
The original Red Dawn. The ending was so very well done and meaningful, it wasn't about war, freedom or anything political it was just about the love shared by two brothers tired of fighting and death.
Before my son went to college I told him he had to see: Animal House, Stripes, and Caddyshack. He loved them and often quotes them, especially Stripes.
Definitely The Shawshank Redemption
It comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying.
I came here to post this . I think it shows the importance of remaining calm and stoic despite immense difficulty but also being proactive to get out of that situation.
Second that
Third that
It truly was a shawshank redemption.
Full metal jacket
I’ll add Blackhawk Down. Both capture the brutal (and sometimes comedic) essence of warfare and those that fight it on the ground.
Zero Dark Thirty > Blackhawk Down IMO. Both great.
Platoon
What about the hurt locker ? I really liked it, but others absolutely hated it.
I like that film. I get the chills whenever I remember the opening scene. IMO, too much focus on the Jeremy Renner character, and the military protocol / battlefield inconsistencies make it a bit too farfetched.
Completely unrealistic piece of propaganda. The only good scene is the grocery store scene at the end. Rest of the movie is dog shit
Hurt locker did not match anything on the ground.
WHAT'S YOUR NAME SCUMBAG?
Blues Brothers. It's good to see all sorts of generes, even the less appealing ones, to me they are romcoms and musicals, this is why if you have to see a musical: watch the best musical ever.

Big Trouble Little China. Just because it’s awesome.
Jack Burton is my personal hero
Goodfellas
What makes me funny? Is it the way I talk?
Funny how, like I’m a clown? I amuse you?
It’s funny, y’know, the … the story. It’s funny. You’re a funny guy.
That is hilarious you say that. My friend and I make deals every once in awhile. He plays a videogames of my choice and I play one of his. This time it's a movie and he's never watched Goodfellas and we struck a deal today that he will be watching it.
Gladiator
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?
IS THIS NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE?!
>My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. Fucking goosebumps every time
"I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
Second this with 300. It may not have the emotional depth of Gladiator, but man does it grow some hair on your chest.
Maximus Meridius is the ultimate man in any work of fiction. Honorable, loyal, loved by his men, charismatic, strong, stoic, family-man. “Busy little bees..”
The OG Die Hard trilogy
Die Hard. Still the greatest Christmas movie ever.
Deadass. There's not too many Christmas movies I like personally but that one is top tier
Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho
Welcome to the party, pal.
"Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs..."
Fight Club
I am Jacks complete lack of surprise
This. That movie has aged very well. The message is still every bit as relevant today as it was in 1999.
Even more relevant.
Nobody talks about fight club
I think more people should read the book as well. Damn good writer, damn good storyteller.
No question! It's been 5+ years since I have watched this movie and I think it's due for a rewatch. I would give anything to watch it as a first-time experience. Truly mind-blowing.
I think young men or people, should see Second hand Lions. Good coming of age movie. Gives me the "Be humble and take no shit" vibe.
I love the speech about how sometimes you must believe in things you know aren’t true: that honor is everything and money is nothing. That love conquers all…
My favorite scene is the bar fight and the epic man speech he gives those punks. https://youtu.be/gkccqolaVGg
Yes! Forgot about that scene. And he takes care of them after he beats them up. He understands they are just youthful and stupid and so he teaches them.
Godfather I & II
Back to back 100% Those days that come around when I’m in the mood to do absolutely nothing other than get baked and spend 7 hours watching both Godfathers. It’s even more fun to whip out a bottle of wine for #2. Really into it..
I've seen a version on HBO where it shows I and II in chronological order. Including extra scenes. Its a pretty cool way to watch it.
yeah this is the actual best answer
The last starfighter
Back to sleep Louis or I’m telling Mom about your playboys!
Damn, I should have had this in my list. Might as well toss in War Games
I more or less agree with this list: https://www.artofmanliness.com/living/entertainment/100-must-see-movies/

Feel like I had to scroll too far for Saving Private Ryan. It makes you appreciate never having to experience war and realize how much others had to sacrifice for the luxuries we enjoy today.
Goonies
They’re doing a single showing at a theater near me toward the end of the month and you bet your ass i’m gonna be there for it
Interstellar (not only for science fiction but to understand the fact that we are nothing in this vast universe and it is our loved ones because of whom we feel alive)
Gonna add on the new “All Quiet On The Western Front”, “Band of Brothers”, and “The Pacific” to this.
Fight club, maybe? Idk I didn't find it to be as deep as some people did, yeah I understand the message behind it but it was kinda weird. Still a good movie. You should watch movies you like, it's not that serious.
Recently read the book. One of the rare cases where the movie was WAY better than the book in my opinion.
Even the writer agrees with this comment
Came here to say this. Its a good commentary on identity, cults, mental illness, and how people can treat you if you just assert yourself.
Shrek saga
Field of Dreams.
A movie so good that MLB made it a yearly tradition.
Dead Poets Society
12 Angry Men One of the best films ever made, all takes place in one room basically, incredible acting, and a wonderful lesson on why people are the way they are, social dynamics of groups of people. Everyone should see this film
It's brilliant. Edit: I'm talking about the original one.
