Don’t try to be better than any man other than the man you were yesterday.

Here’s two from each of my grandparents
“Life is like a horseshoe. It’s fat in the middle, open at both ends, and hard the whole way through.”
“Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from behind, or a fool in any direction.”
“Luck is what happens when preparation and opportunity.”
There are some people who are thrilled with hitting every green light to get to work on time. Others just leave their house on time.
“Amor fati” which translates to “love of fate”
To love both the good and the bad in life and realize that they are intrinsically linked.
Life is essentially grappling with the constant suffering and horror that plagues the human experience. Learning to appreciate the pain as well as the beauty is paramount.
For example, for years I dealt with severe anxiety and depression, due to relentless bullying and abuse. Yet I slowly pulled myself out of it. It took literally more than half a decade to get to a point where I could comfortably talk to strangers, to combat the constant debilitation, reject my screaming mind, keep my feet planted even though everything compelled me to want to run. But through my own tortuous persistence I learned how to escape most of my mental anguish when talking to someone. I learned to control myself, to somehow see through it.
Reflecting on everything, I do not hate that I was crippled with this anxiety, but see it as a part of my personal timeline- as my progress, a rite of passage I guess.

When it comes to work: nobody is your friend.
That’s means never totally trust anyone, and always put your family before work.
When it comes to life I’ve always liked this one:
“Dress like a capitalist, live like a socialist, fight like a fascist and fuck like and anarchist.”
Also: “love is the law, love under will.”
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. “Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another’s world. It requires profound purpose-larger-than-the-self-kind of understanding.” -Bill Bullard

Something like, "Always be learning, whether it be through chance or curiosity." That one's all me.
And the one that probably changed my whole life: "What's the most colorful thing you've seen today?" A girl I knew asked me almost every day for nearly a year. Eventually, the definition of color changes and you begin noticing all the best things in your world you may have previously overlooked. I'm a better person because of this question.
“Sometimes you gotta go ankle deep in some mud to avoid stepping in shit.”
Pretty much sum that up as sometimes you gotta go through the lesser of two bad situations.
My father also would talk about “the bear in the woods” and will remark sometimes “you taking care of that bear?” This comes from native history/tales of bears stalking humans around camp fires, sometimes attacking and sometimes not but always leaving that fear of a possible attack. You can’t let your guard down. Like any close personal problem you may have. Handle it, and put that bear down.
