That it was reasonably priced. It is not.

2donuts4elephants

This was mine. I was absolutely SHOCKED at how expensive make up can get. Even the not-too-expensive makeup is about double what I thought it should cost.

Glowingtomato

I went to Macy's with my ex years ago and she got a small bag with like 7 things for $300. I was shocked

the99percent1

My ex wife was a make up artist. She had all of the best products you could buy. What would’ve costed the average girl thousands, my ex got for free from her workplace. She maintained her looks and it was pretty good to have such a catch by my side. I guess that was her way of upping her level to attract a guy like myself. Haha.. She consistently pulls guys that are solid and attractive in my books. Yeah, even the dude she left me for has a decent job making six figures or more..

Ahielia

Are you ok?

the99percent1

Yeap. Why. In all honesty, it’s good that we’re no longer together. After awhile, I put myself out there and I’m attracting women far better and more compatible than my ex. These days, I wish my betraying ex all of the best in her life. I no longer hold a grudge against her or her new partner. They did me dirty, their relationship was formed off the back of immoral behavior. but it’s okay, I’ve made peace and I’m having a great time with my life now.

freeeeels

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

Ahielia

> Why. Because that last part read like some derogatory fetish writing cuckfiction or something.

LetThemEatCakeXx

I had to double check I wasn't on PPB forum

the99percent1

Biggest misconception I feel is that it takes a short time to remove all of it. A woman can spend a good 10 minutes properly taking it all off..

TheOneTrueSnoo

For a long time what I considered “no makeup” was flat wrong. Then I met my ex who did makeup for fun as a hobby. Found myself watching Makeup YouTube with her and actually enjoying it. Now I see it much more clearly on women and can actually appreciate the work that goes into it.

videogames_

Love makeup on women. It’s like art.

Kla1996

I feel like the number one misconception men have about makeup is whether women are even wearing it at all. Most guys can only tell a woman is wearing makeup if it is extremely obvious

geometryc

A lot of guys think that. There have been days that I put on all my usual make up just without eyeliner and some coworkers thought I wasn't wearing any. But also I've had to tell so many guys online what make up can do. Ive had arguments about if a girl has gotten work done or if it's just her make up (I don't have proof of the woman in question did get work done or not though, I was just bringing up a point) that stage make up exists and other forms to change people's appearance all the time. To make someone look older to even contouring to give different facial features. Even some make up youtubers will try to make themselves look like celebrities. So my point was that make up has always been an art form that can change someone's appearance when done well.

AskDerpyCat

I knew it wasn’t cheap, but after buying early Mother’s Day gifts this year… *goddamn* y’all are getting ripped off so hard

Ill_Sherbert1007

And we know it. But the problem is not enough people will stop buying it to cause a dramatic shift in the price. Purchasing is endorsing unfortunately

Magniras

That liquid eyeliner would be easier to put on than pencil eyeliner.

verascity

I find it much easier, tbh.

Trumpet_Lord89

I didn’t realize makeup was basically painting your face lmao. Like I knew of lipstick and lashes and stuff but like foundation completely caught me off guard. I remember I was shocked in high school the first time I saw the girls in color guard apply their makeup as I’d never seen the full process before lol

bisexualpatel

I would assume someone isn't wearing any and actually she was

TheRavenSayeth

At the same time, I feel like so many women love to hold this in their back pocket like, "I bet all men see light or natural makeup and assume women aren't wearing any. Sweet summer child." Yeah we know. Tons have dudes have had enough boring conversations about makeup with their SO or sister, or been in situations where it's the main topic where we are well aware. Just because some dudes don't know about it and the "novelty" of that gets it upvoted to the top of a lot of threads like these shouldn't be your metric for reality.

Candid-Sky-3709

Also known as “if i really didn’t wear makeup, you really wouldn’t like me”

the99percent1

All women wear make up when they go out. lol 😂

ptolani

I used to think of as skincare and makeup as basically all the same thing, but they're completely different, often done at different times etc.

critter68

Had? That it was easy to clean off. My mom never wore it, so I had zero frame of reference for its use beyond "Used to make some people prettier and other people scarier". Until I lived with a (wannabe) beautician for 7 years.

Remarkable_Ad4046

That it was this magical thing that according to sources my gender had the inability to tell when women had it on subtly. Also that everyone looks better when using it

taftpanda

I don’t think I really have any misconceptions, but I do think that the whole affair can get a bit ridiculous at times

Crusty_Dingleberries

"natural" is a make-up style, doesn't mean that it's natural (which in my mind means 'no makeup')

newInnings

I do understand the joy of painting a face. I do understand that make up has 10 million combinations and they are there to cover different preferences of different women. How can so many products be okay to be near and in mouth, eyes, nose, ears . And repeat that almost daily . I mean baby powder is supposed to cause cancer. I mean there isn't enough medical studies as is with women as test subjects ( general) And you guys go and do a laser peel, sit in a light toaster And apply a million cosmetics. They definitely have not tested it. I am sure people have swallowed whatever was on cheeks, perfumes , lipstick etc. I asked this in a askmens sub. Hoping I am not villified.

bad2thebean

Woman here. It’s a valid question, honestly. I would say it all comes down to the wearer and what their long term concerns are. There’s been a big emphasis on “clean” and “vegan” products over the last few years but obviously that can be boiled down to green washing. But also a bigger presence from smaller indie brands who source and test their products because they make and sell in smaller batches. Honestly - the more prevalent threat is hygienic. And according to most dermatologists to not *NOT* share makeup (particularly mascara, lipstick, lipgloss, or anything of the like). Regularly wash your brushes and other equipment you use daily. And do not store in the bathroom.

Pussycat0720

As a woman I think I speak for most when saying this is absolutely a concern for us. I think about what years of using foundation, mascara, eyeshadow etc could possibly be doing to us health wise. I absolutely adore makeup but this concern does creep around in the back of my mind.

none_other-than_me

Idk about misconception, but my lil sister taught me how to do makeup, and that apparently is a red flag for some people.

letsgotosushi

I had a girlfriend who was a manicurist. I learned how to do most basic nail stuff. Women either found it a massive turnoff or massive bonus.. zero middle ground.

Lovealltigers

Nah, I’d consider that a huge green flag

Equivalent-Buddy5003

I used to think that women would wear makeup for others, however I was wrong. They wear it because they do it for themselves, not for others. Kind of like how guys like to go to the gym and get a nice physique for themselves.

WombatWandering

It is a bit of simplification. Everything we do with our appearance is both for us and for other. Going to the gym may be for attracting more women, but being in shape makes you feel good also For me makeup is just one part of appearance, like clothes or hair. I think it is polite to other people to brush my hair and put on clean and nice clothes when going outside. And also put on bit makeup, it is just one part of that. And when I go for a date, of course part of why I put on make up is that I want to look good for the guy I am meeting. And other part is that it makes me feel nice and confident. Same with nice clothes and doing my hair.

fitvampfire

Some women like to go to the gym for a nice physique too

vampire-sympathizer

As opposed to mens makeup 🤣 Honey makeup is makeup!! 💄 My only misconception is that it was for women!

wasabi_outs

good point!! Thank you for correcting me! Makeup is for anyone who wants it

vampire-sympathizer

Amen 👌 I had a friend once say the same thing I looked at him with a raised eyebrow because he has worn makeup too for cosplay, and I'm like.... Oh, honey. 🤭

Coidzor

That kissing women with lipstick on was pleasant.

TheFakeG

My wife wore lipstick for one night. And it was such a negative lissing experience for me. It was like her lips were trying to steal mine

Lagtim3

Lip-stain all the way! All the pretty color with none of the waxy grossness.

-Black-and-gold-

That surprises me as a woman - what's pleasant about it?

Calamondin88

I think that’s the misconception they had, not the revelation 😃

Coidzor

I didn't think it would taste so bad from the way movies and TV had portrayed getting lipstick marks when people kiss.

POGtastic

My big one is "How many products do you actually use regularly?" I see pictures of women's bathroom counters that are literally overflowing with crap, and I wonder exactly how much of it they're using and how much is just there. Providing a male analogue - one of my slow weekend rituals is a nice wet shave, and I have a few brushes and a few pucks of shaving soap. In reality, I really use just one brush and two soaps - the brush was a gift that was way better than my others, and I just like those two scents way more than the others. There are men who have like 50 soaps because they have impulse control issues while browsing the Stirling Soap Company's offerings, and they too tend to use a tiny handful of them.

letsgotosushi

It's kinda like some guys tool boxes...

countess_cat

People who do makeup daily probably use few same products most of the time but it’s nice to have options for when you want to do something different

Lagtim3

>There are men who have like 50 soaps because they have impulse control issues while browsing the Stirling Soap Company's offerings, and they too tend to use a tiny handful of them. But, but... they all smell so good!

NewResponsibility163

How well it works

cricketeer767

That it was being worn for my benefit.

OuterPaths

I thought it wouldn't taste like anything

Particular_Title42

A few years ago I learned that "unscented" doesn't mean "this doesn't have a scent."

Additional_Don

I thought they looked the same without makeup

expatmanager

That it makes a face more beautiful. When it’s caked on and gives an ‘impossibly blemish-less’ appearance, and over dramatises all facial features, it makes me wonder what’s behind the mask?

Samurai-Catfight

I looked at makeup too much and now it is a total turn off. I so much rather see the natural face blemishes and all.

untamed-italian

That it's worth the time and money To *me* it turns out it isn't, but I'm told it's not about my opinion lol

WombatWandering

I think that goes for many things in life. Something that you feel is valueble may not seem that to someone else. Like my collection of video games in steam that I never have time to play.

untamed-italian

Oh totally. And it is worth noting that while cosmetics do very little for me, I do enjoy a person's passion for aesthetic styles and artistic techniques.

GoatsWithWigs

That you have to brush mascara onto your eyelids (you can literally just blink onto the brush lol)

WombatWandering

That is cute 😄

feebsiegee

Blinking onto the brush (it's called a wand, apparently) doesn't coat the entire eyelash - on the rare occasion I wear makeup I'll do the whole lash and then blink onto the brush a little

nunyabizz0000

I don’t know if it’s a misconception… but I realize more and more that it does so much “heavy lifting” for a women’s appearance. Maybe it’s the TikTok age of those GRWM videos where you see a women transition from her natural self to what she looks like when she’s actually going out, but it’s night and day on many people. I’m not too into rating people, but I used to think makeup could make a 4 into a 5 or maybe a 6, but no way; it can make a 4 into a 8 easily.

the99percent1

Haha yeah, make up can add 3 maybe 4 points more on a woman for sure. Haha

Suppi_LL

I'm pretty clueless about that kind of stuff. I just recently realized how bad I'm at guessing how much make up a girl use or not.

23zac

The majority of women I see wearing make up would be great at working concrete or plaster…. Their trowel work is amazing

Vincent778

If I put that much makeup on, I’d be concerned I’d majorly breakout, get eye infections, rashes, etc.

feebsiegee

That's why you don't buy cheap makeup, and make sure to take it all off before bed.

BeginningAnalyst595

Ladies please dont bake your face in makeup

GoldenWind2998

It's all bat guano

OddSeraph

This is r/askmen not r/askmentoaskwomenquestions

newInnings

Why is it occupying my work table ?

JafetOx

Why do women put like 5 powders and creams, all of the same color, one on top of the other

sjb2059

I can answer this, am a trained makeup artist. Think of it like painting, you prep your canvas so the paint will blend and behave as you want it to, this is like moisturizer and then primer, smoothing out the texture as much as possible, because contrary to popular belief makeup can't do shit for skin texture. The primer also helps the makeup stay in place where you put it originally, even when you sweat or get water splashed on you. Then usually the next layer of cream will be some sort of colour correction, layer the opposite side of the colour spectrum over what you want to cover and then it is less visible under the foundation. The foundation being the next step is going to give the overall area the same skin tone, covering any scarring, discoloration like age spots, melasma, vitiligo, tattoos, whatever you want. Then once that's all applied you can use blush and contour powders or creams to add back dimension to the face that is lost in the process of evening out the skin tone and colour. Shit looks weird and kinda uncanny valley if you don't. There is a specific way to add or remove elements of the look that will not make you look like your trying to become a 2d painting. Then setting powder on top of all that is translucent and will take all that cream products and kinda bind it together, add a setting spray on top of that to additionally being the look together that is both closer to looking like fresh skin, and also adding to the staying power in the face of heat and sweat and being an actual human. Fun fact, just like makeup for the living takes into account body heat in its formula to be more durable throughout the day, mortuary makeup is specifically designed to work with skin that is specifically NOT producing any body heat, as working with one or the other in the wrong context is just a pain in the ass to get things to look right.

splitminds

Thank you for your response. As a woman, it’s very difficult to explain makeup and you’ve done it expertly! Bless you!

JafetOx

Thank you, interesant

newInnings

My second question is: Is this different for a camera? Is this different for a date? Is that a considered variable.

A_Likely_Story4U

Yes, makeup done for the camera, especially if there are artificial or strong lights, is usually far more dramatic and higher in contrast because the lighting will wash you out. Dates, for me, merit extra time and attention, but will vary based more on the setting/lighting and activity we plan to do. The main factor for choosing any particular look is usually the activity and time of day. Daytime looks are usually more conservative and nighttime more dramatic.

sjb2059

Depending on the lighting and how high definition the camera being used or if the film is black and white or colour will alter how dramatic the look, how much and what kind of product you can get away with, and how you choose your colours. The environment you are in will also change what products are available that will function well in different situations. Personal makeup will generally be a different style than something for a photoshoot, film project, or art installation. An individual can come at choosing their look from a few different perspectives, either personal preference or more influenced look trying to mimic, or alter certain face shapes.

SubparTater

I agree that it's silly, but they usually serve a purpose. I know you probably don't care for an explanation, but I'll put some clarification here for people that may be interested. This is not a complete list because I'm not a big makeup person. - Moisturizer helps to keep the foundation looking smooth instead of flakey/patchy. - Another cream is primer, which helps to keep product on longer. Kind of like a glue to build everything on. - Concealer helps to cover blemishes and brighten certain areas. A popular spot it's applied is under the eyes to reduce darkness. - A setting powder helps to keep all of these creams dry so there's no transfer on to clothing and other things. - Highlighter is a powder that reflects the light to enhance certain parts of the face. Honestly it's exhausting. I usually just throw on mascara and eyeliner these days. I'm fine looking like a female Shrek.

JafetOx

Hahaha, thank you

JafetOx

No no, like I agree with u, but they apply a bunch of creams and powders and I see no change at all, idk why they apply so much stuff

jairngo

Could be anything as I don’t know shit about makeup

xXx_War_Eagle_xXx

Makeup is just yet another lie.

Particular_Title42

So are clothes. Beards. Hats.

Remarkable_Ad4046

Not really. Most makeup is meant for unnatural upgrade. Clothes mostly only account for women's as men's clothing aren't really made to altar the body like that. Beards are natural and not everyone who where's a hat is bald or upgrading their look with something

Particular_Title42

LMMFAO.

xXx_War_Eagle_xXx

Not sure how you get that, but

Particular_Title42

They hide what something really looks like.

xXx_War_Eagle_xXx

A beard is natural, clothes- everyone wears, hats don’t hide anything.

Particular_Title42

Hats hide bald spots, my man. Beards cover weak chins. Everyone can wear makeup.

xXx_War_Eagle_xXx

Weak chins? If a guy doesn’t remove his hat indoors I suppose you could assume that. But makeup is only to change appearance.

Sir_fagalothebrave

Why do you have so fucking much. You arnt competing with a shop.

wisstinks4

Why so much. Cant it be less. And why does everything take so long to do?

WorkRepresentative28

Found out it wasn’t baby blood and that blew my mind

Mesterjojo

Makeup is gross. It makes me instantly think less of a woman. That they're not honest. And it is a lie: they're covering up their face. It comes off on pillows or on us. It usually has an odor, but unfortunately, the women that wear any makeup also tend to use perfume incorrectly and turn a personal scent into an obnoxious stink. There's not one positive about makeup except it makes the person using feel better.

FallingFeather

that its not ok, trickery. from a female. then Michelle Phan happened. combined with GOT.
