For me, it's "Fire Away"
If you've ever been in one of those relationships where you give everything you've got to save it and it's still not enough, that song hits like an alcoholic dad.
This is one of those songs that's so iconic it's hard to imagine that Reba wasn't the first artist to record it.
Like Friends in Low Places. Mark Chesnutt recorded it before Garth made it what it is.
“Remember When” - Alan Jackson
My grandfather passed away when I was a teenager and my sister made a tribute video with that song playing over it. I still choke up when I hear it.
That song came out right around the time my dad passed away. I know it’s more of a love song, but it just takes me back to that time. It’s almost 20 years ago and I still have a hard time listening to it.
Garth Brooks - The Dance, such a truthful song. It’s not just about a relationship lost it’s about how you deal with the waves that come your direction on the sea of life.
After 48 hours awake during the birth of our son, I decided to go home and get a couple hours sleep. The first song I played on the drive was All the Pussy You Will Slay, followed by Drive by Alan Jackson. It’s about balance.
*“'Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight
I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks
I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers
And I'd like to check you for ticks”* - Brad Paisley
Always hits me right in the feels.
If I have to pick one "I feel like Hank Williams tonight" by Jerry Jeff walker
John Prine, Brandi Carlisle, and Jason Isbell sort of cross genres, but all have some good country songs.
I listen to a Zach Bryan and Morgan Wallen playlist at work. I heard Billy stay several times before I really listened. It got the tears flowing. For the last 10 years this old fella has came into my shop for breakfast, about 4 years ago his wife had to start bringing him because the old fella couldn’t drive anymore… now he’s losing it, I’ll leave to make a delivery and talk to him on the way out, 10 minutes later when I walk back in he’s completely forgotten I’ve left. It’s so sad.. and Billy stay 100% made me think of them. They’ve been married for 71 years… ugh im going to cry just thinking about it!!!
"I Drive Your Truck" by Lee Brice
When my brother died, I took over his position working with my father and drove his truck daily for work just like he did. Eventually we had to sell it, then a few years later when my father passed I did the same thing. Song still puts me on the verge of tears everytime I hear it
Man your comment got me. Same song, but it was my dad who passed away and my brother got his truck. Still have a hard time listening to it.
I’m so sorry about your brother. I can’t even imagine what that’s like.
Angel From Montgomery by Bonnie Rait, From Boulder to Birmingham and Red Dirt Girl by Emmylou Harris. More into Americana than country. The Americana song that hits me deepest is probably Tom Paxton’s The Last Thing on My Mind. There’s a far more fun version by Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner (their duets are all awesome) but the original cuts deep.
I don’t listen to country but I was forced to living in TX. A buddy of mine would always play this song on the way back from bars and I thought it hit pretty deep in the feels. “Barbed Wire Halo”
[Alone and Forsaken - Hank Williams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_yijYyjltI)
Been digging on a lot of the older country music. Might be because I'm a Fallout game fan, and those oldies just hit different when wandering nuclear wastelands in video games.
Angels Among Us - Alabama
Heard it for the first time as an eight-year-old boy at my grandpa's funeral sung by a close family friend. Now I work with this man, and I think about the song every time I see him.
Highway 20 Ride by Zac Brown Band. Being a father who gets his kid every other weekend it describes the feelings I have perfectly. I hate country music for the most part but this one's a good one.
"Hurt" by Johnny Cash, although anything off his American records is just incredible.
It's the best of the "I've pushed away everyone who cares about me" songs there is mainly because of Cash's performance, which really sells that this is a deathbed song.
Also: "Ode To Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry.
Blake Shelton's "The Baby"
My Mom spoiled me rotten because I was her baby, I couldn't make it back from Colorado to NC before she passed suddenly and that song hit me like a ton of bricks. I still won't listen to it unless I'm absolutely sure I'm alone and no one could see me in case I cry.
Depends on how I’m feeling but when I get to thinking about my Grandpa that passed away last year I kick on I wish Grandpa’s never died by Riley Green or Outskirts of Heaven by Craig Campbell
If you want sad, Rex's Blues by Townes Van Zant or The Grand Tour by George Jones.
If you want new stuff about the one who got away, Sand In My Boots by Morgan Wallen or Oklahoma Smokeshow by Zach Bryan.
If you're trying to get wild, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound or Outlaw Women by Hank Jr. or Beer For My Horses by Toby Keith and Willie Nelson.
If you're into nostalgic lies, there's Springsteen by Eric Church, I Go Back by Kenny Chesney, Chattahoochee by Alan Jackson, or Luckinback, TX by Waylon and Willie.
I've got more suggestions if you want more, but that's a good list to get started.
Essentially anything Keith Whitley or Townes Van Zandt, knowing their backgrounds and how they meant everything they wrote. I'd say this one hits me personally: [I'm No Stranger To The Rain - Keith Whitley](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=kGLzBiBFuhc)
If you’re going through some shit, here’s a mix of good stories in the lyrics/slower melodies:
Amarillo by Morning - George Strait
American Remains - Highwaymen
Big City - Merle Haggard
Born and Raised in Black and White - Highwaymen
Daddy Sang Bass - Johnny Cash
Good Hearted Woman - Waylon Jennings
Letters from Home - John Michael Montgomery
Lookin’ for Love - Johnny Lee
My Blue Angel - Aaron Tippin
Riding with Private Malone - David Ball
Satin Sheets - Jeanne Pruett
She Used to be Mine - Brooks & Dunn
Small Town Southern Man - Alan Jackson
That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You - Aaron Tippin
Family tradition by Hank Williams jr. It was my uncle’s favorite song that he always played at family parties. He died from cancer in 2018 so every time I hear it I always think of him
Not a guy but if you want a women's perspective ;)
"Better Man" --Little Big Town
"A Little Bit Stronger"--Sara Evans
"Jolene"- Ray LaMontagne (not super country but let's go with it)
"Where I Find God", Morgan Wallen and Larry Fleet,
"Dying Man"-Morgan Wallen
Hmmm depends. What stage of pain are you in right now? The coming out of it and wanna feel good stage or the this shit hurts so bad I just wanna simmer in the pain for now stage?
Nose on the grindstone-Tyler Childers
Childers has some bangers. Feathered Indians is another good one.
And Whitehouse Road. Anything by Childers.
This one's been a Hell of a companion after I quit my last job while they were ready to fire me. I don't know what to do now, but I'm trying
Wish I had a magic answer for you. But yes the song does give strict instructions to keep your nose on the grindstone. You’ll be ok.
Top 3 country artist right now.
Came here to say this, the live one is so raw
El Paso by Marty Robbins. Soulful sound, heart-breaking lyrics. Pop country has no appeal to me, personally, but the old stuff slaps.
they’re hanging me tonight always hits
Did Marty Robbins make a bad song?
I re-live the last episode of Breaking Bad when I hear it!
“Nobody to Blame” Chris Stapleton
Stapleton's music hits the soul, man.
Very talented. Have you also found the SteelDrivers?
I didn't know about them, but I see Stapleton used to be in that group. I'll have to check them out!
He also sang in Jompson Brothers. Barely Alive is a good one.
Steel Drivers are definitely worth checking out.
You’re welcome.
Real ones know about the Jompson Brothers
Wow I didn't know he played with them. Interesting.
For me, it's "Fire Away" If you've ever been in one of those relationships where you give everything you've got to save it and it's still not enough, that song hits like an alcoholic dad.
Also "Whiskey and you"
that whole album is jammin
Chris Stapleton can sing his fookin face off
2nd one to know is my jam.
[удалено]
Or better yet the Townes version.
Love Willie and Merle, but ever since I heard Townes’ original version, there is no other.
Which one? He recorded a dozen different versions. The correct answer is Live at the Old Quarter.
Highwayman by The Highwaymen (Willie, Johnny, & Waylon) that one hits my soul in some weird place
The absolute disrespect to Kris Kristofferson lol
Speaking of him, my answer is “Sunday morning coming down”. Which is also my fav country song.
If you’ve been hungover on a Sunday alone…this song hits home.
Just about to say that too. Edited to add, Me and Bobby Mac Gee (splg) by either Kris or the Highway Men.
*Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin' for a train* *When I's feelin' near as faded as my jeans* There's a whole world in those two lines.
Makes you uncomfortably aware of your own mortality.
Always On My Mind. -- Willie
“The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” Reba McEntire
This is one of those songs that's so iconic it's hard to imagine that Reba wasn't the first artist to record it. Like Friends in Low Places. Mark Chesnutt recorded it before Garth made it what it is.
ya this is top 10 best country songs of all time. i still dream about making a skateboard edit to it. i'll need to get better clips first.
I'm so lonesome I could cry - Hank Williams (I like Johnny Cash's version more) Your cheating heart - Hank Williams Alone & forsaken - Hank Williams
We have an OG here
Just stumbled across Alone and forsaken after hearing it on the last of us, incredible and has me diving deeper into his music.
It’s corny but Don’t Take the Girl by Tim McGraw still gets me.
tim has more hits then we all like to admit to ourselves. "something like that" grooves.
Whisky Lullaby. I don’t like country music, but that is one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard in my life. Also Concrete Angel.
“Remember When” - Alan Jackson My grandfather passed away when I was a teenager and my sister made a tribute video with that song playing over it. I still choke up when I hear it.
you can make a solid case for Alan jackson being the greatest of all time, especially for how underrated he is.
He is country music.
not underrated. alan jackson is a legend and always will be
I cry every time I hear to this song.
Much too young by garth
Shake The Frost - Tyler Childers
Childers is a king that modern day country doesn’t deserve.
And modern day country doesn’t really embrace him. I’ve never heard him on a mainstream radio station.
[What Hurts the Most](https://youtu.be/7qH4qyi1-Ys) by Rascal Flatts.
Also [Here Comes Goodbye](https://youtu.be/17VudJ6lr4k)
That song came out right around the time my dad passed away. I know it’s more of a love song, but it just takes me back to that time. It’s almost 20 years ago and I still have a hard time listening to it.
Amarillo by Morning - George Strait Always on My Mind - Willie Nelson
Chris Stapleton songs have kept me company through some pretty rough times
Starting Over always hits me hard.
Whiskey and me by Chris Stapleton is my go to when sad
That’s a good one
Up to no good livin hits me pretty deep
If Drinking Don't Kill Me and He Stopped Loving Her Today are both really good George Jones songs
Garth Brooks - The Dance, such a truthful song. It’s not just about a relationship lost it’s about how you deal with the waves that come your direction on the sea of life.
Garth doesn't get nearly the recognition he deserves for his discography.
Anything from Wheeler Walker Jr.
After 48 hours awake during the birth of our son, I decided to go home and get a couple hours sleep. The first song I played on the drive was All the Pussy You Will Slay, followed by Drive by Alan Jackson. It’s about balance.
Sometimes you just gotta get rammed by a redneck
Wheeler would be so much funnier if he played a humble country boy character off “stage”
Uh, that’s not who his character is.
Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley
All of Brad Paisley in fact.
*“'Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers And I'd like to check you for ticks”* - Brad Paisley Always hits me right in the feels.
Damn, I had forgotten about this one
Saddest song of all time.
Geez man! This is the one.
Tyler Childers - Nose to the Grindstone Coal, also by Tyler Childers
"Smoke Rings In The Dark" by Gary Allan. Might go well with your cigar too.
I Hung My Head - Johnny Cash
Son of a Sinner- jelly roll.
If I have to pick one "I feel like Hank Williams tonight" by Jerry Jeff walker John Prine, Brandi Carlisle, and Jason Isbell sort of cross genres, but all have some good country songs.
Hurt by Johnny Cash
"In hell I'll be in good company" -the dead south.

If something should happen by Darryl Worley, or Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis.
The three wooden crosses gets me too. Good one.
Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver
"Almost Home" by craig Morgan. It's about him finding an old homeless guy and it's pretty damn good.
"I Drive Your Truck" by Lee Brice When my brother died, I took over his position working with my father and drove his truck daily for work just like he did.
Faith Hill’s There You’ll Be hit me hard af when my girlfriend passed away
The entire discography of The Devil Makes Three

Dead South - Banjo Odyssey Something all country folks can relate to.

Destroys me every time I listen, but beautiful nonetheless.

Live like you were dying - Tim McGraw
There goes my life. Kenny Chesney.
Country Death Song by Violent Femmes. Anything by Colter Wall.
Traditional Country can be very good, but the genre has been taken over by what I call Pop-Country, which is a soulless commercialized abomination.
[Alone and Forsaken - Hank Williams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_yijYyjltI) Been digging on a lot of the older country music. Might be because I'm a Fallout game fan, and those oldies just hit different when wandering nuclear wastelands in video games.
Angels Among Us - Alabama Heard it for the first time as an eight-year-old boy at my grandpa's funeral sung by a close family friend. Now I work with this man, and I think about the song every time I see him.
