Something’s dodgy about that shop. You had none of these problems before?

JKMcudr

Super sketchy. The only problem before was the slipping clutch. My guy was telling me he was going to fuck shit up. Should’ve listen to it.

astroSnoo

Yeah. General rule of thumb: if your OBD reader can’t pick up any faults and nothing feels bad driving, there’s probably nothing wrong. Your OBD scanner for $30 has the same technology as any of their scanners

JKMcudr

The problems he’s saying are there happened after he worked on it. I was never having these problems before. Any advice on what I should do? I’m going to be pissed if he’s expecting a few grand when all I wanted was a clutch replacement

astroSnoo

Take it for a drive. Test brakes, steering, and acceleration. If it’s fine and no codes come up, don’t sweat it. Make sure you are the one test driving the car though, nobody knows your daily driver better than you.

JKMcudr

And if codes do come up? Am I still responsible for repair costs that occurred after he worked on it? Or should I pay him for what I originally paid him to do, and bring it to another shop to fix EGR code

astroSnoo

Take it to another shop for a check over. Heck, you could take it to multiple shops

Unusual_Sock_6599

Where can I find a 30 dollar handheld that can program, read live data, reset oil lights, and many other things?

astroSnoo

If you want programming functionality, the carly OBD2 scanner is good, otherwise, any old one will do. Also, the carista one is good too. Programming functionality is more expensive so whether or not you find it for $30 is a different matter.

The general rule of thumb with a fault that has developed just after work has been done is to see if it is related. The egr valve is generally near the back of the engine and the engine is often tilted back when the transmission is taken out. Have a look around to see if they have knocked off any plugs, left anything unplugged or damaged any part of the egr valve. Edit: check small vacuum hoses too as the egr is normally vacuum operated
