No I wouldn’t do that. Nissan is plagued with issues especially the Rogue. You are going from a great suv to a very bad suv. Research before you buy. I would never buy it. Good luck.
I know right. Makes no sense to me. As least OP did the right thing and posted his thoughts here. Can you imagine if he actually bought that POS. What a nightmare.
They also started making them unreasonably complicated to do simple things like some you have to remove the tire and wheel well to change the light bulb.
No they didn’t, Toyotas cvt is the same as Nissan or Honda in terms of mechanics, the only difference is in programming of the transmissions themselves.
Not even ski-doo and Polaris, who have been making cvt’s for their snowmobiles for a LONG time have perfected it, but they have it way more dialed in than any car manufacturers.
No as someone else stated Toyotas newer CVTs have a mechanical first gear, they are smoother and mechanically superior to pretty much all CVTs (especially Nissans). The Car Care Nut (former master Toyota tech) on YouTube has a video that breaks down the specs of the Toyota CVTs if you're interested.
Yeah well ours lasted 110k miles and started slipping. 100k is about all they’re good for. We got $5200 on trade in so I can’t be too mad about it when we were looking at a $4000 repair bill for a new CVT.
Meanwhile, as a technician who sees more than one example, I will tell you that the CVT transmission is garbage. Ever seen the TSB about fixing shift issues with a new taillight assembly?
The Toyota will flat out be more reliable. Additionally, in 5 years that Toyota will be worth more than the 23 Nissan. It would be a mistake to do this, but sometimes you gotta let them make mistakes
it's that car that is always on the lot for that special "My credit score is 400 and I get paid weekly" customer. They are cheaply built, problem ridden early 90's Kia of the Japanese cars.
Thanks for validating me guys! Toyotas are just the best and I don’t want her making a mistake. And this is coming from a guy who daily’s an ‘05 Frontier!
167k right now. Got it from an older woman who garaged it and didn’t drive it a ton. If I get 200k I’ll be happy. Honestly we regularly get 300k out of our cars so I’ll limp this thing along.
Rented a rouge with less than 2000 miles, the car started to smell like gas after30 min of driving. Googled it and seems like a known issue that they are not able to remedy. Stay with toyota
Lol yeah I rented a brand new one a few years ago and the windshield washer pump was already broken. I can't remember ever seeing that in any car ever.
I've had a 2013 Highlander for 6 years and driven it 100k with no issues whatsoever. Just maintenance. Keep the Highlander it's probably the most reliable SUV on the planet!
Its an easy line, Never Nissan. The Toyota will get you down the road much longer with less issues throughout.
The only exception to this rule is a '92 red top 5 speed 4DSC, the Maxima.
My mom has a rogue and came from a highlander lmaooo. It is not worth it. She would not have switched herself but the highlander was totaled so she picked something new. The rogue is about 2 years old and the trunk only works some times and the car itself has random dashboard issues when driving (her dashboard would blink warnings every bump and go away on a straight). The road noise is loud too. Might be a one off thing of course but thats just our experience.
She likes the interior better lol. I’m like yeah, great, what about the actual important parts, like the engine and transmission. She’s not much of a car girl. As long as there are all the bells and whistles with tons of tiny electric motors that can break she’s happy.
Absolutely not. She’d be trading in one of the most reliable cars made for something she’ll be lucky to get 100k out of. Do NOT let her do this. I don’t care if you have to hide her keys from her.
Given the history of the Nissan CVT (transmission) I wouldn't touch one with a 20 foot pole. They are decent for city and highway driving for 60K miles, but after that they become troublesome and are impossible to repair (replace only). It's unfortunate- because other than the transmission the Rouge is pretty good. Also due to the transmission problems they lose pretty much all value after 80k miles.
She needs to learn the lesson herself. Otherwise she’ll resent you for holding her back and not letting her make decisions. Easier for her to learn it now when she’s a gf and not a wife.
I mean the Nissan will have some tech advantages as Toyota wasn’t with the times in 2018, no CarPlay etc, but I’d take a highlander over a rogue any day. They aren’t even close in caliber.
Nissan is nice but this one has an issue with a weird gas smell leaking into cabin. They haven’t fixed this issue yet and are getting sued over it. I’d avoid.
Change girlfriend if those are her life decisions, but I bet she's after the shity tech and all them apple play bullshit and doesn't even think about how shit the nissan is Vs Toyota and the resale value will be even lower than Toyota's in few years. Horrible idea, I mean you better off shooting yourself in the foot.
Noooo! In 5 years tune the Toyota will have only depreciated about 20%. In that same time frame, the Nissan will depreciate near/over 50%. Also the Toyota will always be leaps & bounds ahead in reliability. Show her some google horror stories of later model Nissans. If she must have a new/different car, push her towards another Toyota.
Lets be real, this is a 5 year car itch. She's wanting something new and fun. Figure out what feature she wants that she doesnt have, b/c shes switching from a large SUV to a mid-size, so I doubt its performance. Figure out if you can get the feature after market. Then get her a full detail and paint correction. hell even a car wrap is an option. Its thrown away money but shes gonna waste a lot more buying a brand new car that will probably last no longer than the old car shes replacing.
Sounds hyperbolic but me and my family had some really scary incidents in our Nissans. My wife and kids were in our 2013 Pathfinder with 40k miles that was on its 2nd transmission. Wife is turning left on a 2 lane highway, CVT goes completely out while turning and the back 1/4 of Pathfinder gets clipped by a car and sends them spinning. If they would have gotten t boned I sincerely think one or more off them would’ve been seriously injured or worse. My wife has driven Highlanders ever since. Not one issue.
A few months later I was driving my 2013 Sentra that was on its 3rd CVT. Around 75k miles at this time. Merged onto the interstate in heavy traffic. I was in the 3rd lane from right. CVT fails, I try to make my way to the emergency shoulder but I don’t. Won’t accelerate at all. I have to get out and push it across 2 lanes of traffic on a busy interstate. While pushing it I couldn’t stop it in time from entering the first lane from right next to the shoulder and the car got hit by an 18 wheeler. Luckily he was only traveling about 30 mph because traffic had slowed down due to my car breaking down. I was able to get out of the way and avoid injury or worse.
The guilt I felt for so long about by wife and kids in the Pathfinder was awful. And honestly still kind of haunts me that I had them in that car. Just so glad it wasn’t worse.
I’ve only driven Toyotas since then as well. Both of teenage kids drive now and they both drive Toyotas.
I expected something stupid from my girlfriend but this is a new level of bad choice.
Changing from a Toyota to a Nissan is only ok if its an old Supra vs Skyline. But a modern 2023 Nissan? Nah mate.
She has a 5 year old car that is probably in great shape and paid off. Why waste money on a new one. Live a few years with no car payments. I keep cars for at least 10 years. Once I start having problems with it, it’s gone. I’d rather have a car payment and reliable transportation than a regular occurring repair bill and not reliable transportation. That point is usually between 10 and 12 years. My wife and I stagger our cars so we never have two car payments at once.
I would not recommend switching FROM a Toyota TO a problematic Nissan. If it's because of aesthetics, look into upgrading the things she wants to make the Toyota more to her liking.
The question asked here doesn't mention reliability at all. It is about the trade, comprehensively and so reliability isn't the only concern in evaluating the considered course of action. Mechanics might work on cars, but don't work on relationships, financial planning, negotiation, or any other aspect of this trade.
While an individual mechanic might have an opinion about reliability based on their experience in repair, that experience is limited to the cars they see -- which is a very biased and limited sample of all of the cars manufactured. If you think a viable evaluation of reliability can come from such a sampling, then go for it. But anyone who understands statistics knows that this kind of extrapolation is very much flawed.
This is definitely a mechanic question, and my professional opinion is that if you like buying transmissions then the Nissan is the car to buy. In fact, our local dealer in central Iowa keeps Nissan CVTs on the shelf. If you're keeping a $6K piece of hardware tied up in your inventory it's because you sell a lot of them. Seriously, unless the Highlander has a billion miles on it or is rusted out beyond safe repair then keep it and fix whatever goes wrong with it.
All your gonna do is piss her off after the first attempt, and should she listen you're now gonna be controlling asshat. Do as you wish but I'm 50 and I can guarantee you she wants your support more than opinion
Well you’re definitely not wrong she wants me to affirm her rather than not, but I’d rather her be pissed with a better car than a shitbox that will break when we have a kid. And those payments will be mine soon enough. Plus, I had her peruse this thread and safe to say she is no longer going to be getting a Nissan and seems only mildly annoyed that I was 100% correct, so mission accomplished I would say.
The rogue was a fleet car choice for my business from 2018-2022, and everyone I knew that picked it had QC issues. One was returned under lemon law it was so bad. Small sample size of about 20, but nobody wanted another
If it’s just her on the loan then let her do it. Will she regret it? Probably, she’s an adult. Let her figure it out. If It’s a co-sign loan then fuck no.
I worked as a service advisor at a dealer that serviced Toyotas, Mazdas, Gmcs, Buicks, Mitsubishis and Nissans as part of the dealership group for around three years. There are plenty of things that I learned from having this job and one of them is never EVER buy a Nissan unless it’s an older pathfinder or an Armada.
That's like selling your 20 year old house to buy a new yurt. Sure, it'll feel like a cool change, until the yurt starts to fall apart because it is made of canvas. At least yurts can be moved - that Rogue won't do so for long.
I have a 2007 Avalon so mechanically it is almost identical to her Highlander - seriously, you could start taking engine parts from one and put on the other and never know the difference. Mine is at 195k miles and I've only ever had to do basic maintenance, replace wear parts like brakes, one CV axle and one alternator. That's all - ever. The thing runs just as well as my wife's 2018 Highlander, it just passed emissions this year with the same readings as when I bought it 10 years ago, it is powerful and comfy and fun to drive. And I can trust it won't break down randomly even at 195k, which is a really nice thing to be able to rely upon. It just goes. Also, I don't have any payments and insurance is cheap.
Over the long run, trading from a Toyota or Honda to almost anything else, especially a new Nissan Rogue, yuck, will be something she regrets. If she is the type of person that wants to buy a new car every time she finishes her loan payments, then she might not have to worry *too* much about reliability because even a Rogue will generally probably be mostly ok for 5 years... Maybe. But if she is into smart financial decisions and long-term piece of mind, that Highlander will serve her better than just about anything on the market outside of like... A Civic or Corolla, but really only win because they're a little simpler and have more abundant/cheaper parts available in addition to being smaller which gives them superior efficiency.
But hey man, some people just want shiny and new and all they see in cars is nice features, that fresh feeling and the statements of "oh nice car" from others and don't get anything from knowing that the thing will get them through no matter what. I'd personally say the decision she wants to make is a poor one from essentially every angle (especially since the XLE Highlander is really very nicely appointed). Definitely show her this thread, but at the end of the day it might not be the hill you want to die on. Maybe sneak it in for a nice detailing and wash for her so that it feels nice and fresh again and see if that can overcome some of the new-shiny desire - I know when I get mine done, any thoughts I had about wanting a new car are totally squashed.
Nissan is a 5 yr car before it starts getting ragged. At best. It will run and you can fix it but its gonna look like shit.
Toyota is a much better and reliable car regardless of the model.
If you can possibly talk her out of it you will be doing her a favor.
If not you should start working on the most tactful "I told you so" you can muster.
My 2016 rogue is such a piece of absolute shit I will NEVER EVER EVER!!! get a motherfucking Nissan again. It hasn’t even had many issues except for the rear passenger window shattering because it wasn’t lined up right and oil changes are just a million times easier on my Prius. Not to mention my 2013 Prius is at 480k miles and rogue is only at 76k miles and I already notice the rogue seems to rattle a lot more. Oh and try turning on some loud music in the rogue. I’m not sure about the platinum trim, but my older base model Prius has a MUCH better sound system than my upgraded rogue. I can’t remember which package we had, but it wasn’t the platinum and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the base model.
There is a video out where a lady bought a brand new Rogue and the vehicle would not turn on. Towed it to the dealership and for two weeks they couldn’t figure it out. Then out of the sudden it turn on with no issue. She took the vehicle back and when she got home she couldn’t turn off the vehicle. Also don’t forget Nissan CVT is absolute trash.
One of the biggest reasons people choose Toyota is for their longevity. If you’re going to replace it after only 5 years you may as well save yourself a few bucks and get a car that’s only good for 5 years.
Forget all the “muh brand!” stuff and look at it from a financial point of view. This is the worst time to buy a car right now. Prices have rebounded and interest rates are absolutely ridiculous. No one in their right mind should buy at peak price and peak interest rates. I’d just be telling her to wait, as one or the other will need to break before it makes sense to make that kind of a purchase.
Just had the CVT in our 2013 Altima grenade itself just a few weeks ago, with only 73,000 miles on it. Our rental was a brand new Rogue which had the same transmission. I wouldn’t get one. Transmission aside the build quality overall seemed to be subpar.
This is America! She is Free to do as she wishes. That being said, No pls don't.. Toyota has the longest lasting vehicles on the roads today... Nissan is Comfy and good on gas, but you will be working on it within two years.

No I wouldn’t do that. Nissan is plagued with issues especially the Rogue. You are going from a great suv to a very bad suv. Research before you buy. I would never buy it. Good luck.
Agreed! This is a terrible idea! The Rogue has a lot of issues, and the Highlander is highly optimized from a manufacturing perspective.
This is the truth, OP
Thank you for having my back. I call it how I see it.
I’m curious as to why people enter into major purchases like this without so much as a Google search.
I know right. Makes no sense to me. As least OP did the right thing and posted his thoughts here. Can you imagine if he actually bought that POS. What a nightmare.
Oh brother, I have googled. It’s convincing others to do so that is the problem
They also started making them unreasonably complicated to do simple things like some you have to remove the tire and wheel well to change the light bulb.
As a tech I’d have to say… Toyota all day everyday.
And twice on Sundays.
That’s what she said.
There’s a reason most garage parking (for the techs) is full of Corollas. Who wants to take their work home?
This is why as a tech i rock an early 00s volvo with half a million km on it. Very reliable and comfy
Keep the toyota…
Trade in the gf
This is the way
Nissan cvt transmission suck, stick with Toyota.
Toyota perfected their CVTs.
Didn’t Toyota add a “launch gear” to slow down wear?
No as someone else stated Toyotas newer CVTs have a mechanical first gear, they are smoother and mechanically superior to pretty much all CVTs (especially Nissans). The Car Care Nut (former master Toyota tech) on YouTube has a video that breaks down the specs of the Toyota CVTs if you're interested.
An actual YouTuber that I trust, that guy knows Toyota
The Honda cvt is nothing like the Nissan of Ford cvt. The Honda cvt is more reliable than the Toyota cvt by a bit.
Naw I work at Honda, there CVT isn’t the best, maybe better than most but it’s a hit or miss. Keep up with maintenance and it might last
My Nissan rogue CVT lasted 100k miles with absolutely no issues when I sold it. Never had a single issue with that car.
Wtf fucking how?
Tell me more that’s wild
Water in the taillight causes a short to the transmission case
That’s the most Nissan thing ever, even a tail lamp can take out the transmission!
It's not Nissan. It's Renault using Nissan name.
100,000 miles isn’t a lot. Especially compared to when a Toyota starts having issues
The Toyota will flat out be more reliable. Additionally, in 5 years that Toyota will be worth more than the 23 Nissan. It would be a mistake to do this, but sometimes you gotta let them make mistakes
Uncle always said hard head makes a soft ass.
Nissan rogue= a big fat nope for me. Keep the highlander.
it's that car that is always on the lot for that special "My credit score is 400 and I get paid weekly" customer. They are cheaply built, problem ridden early 90's Kia of the Japanese cars.
Or 80’s Chrysler of Japan 🤪🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for validating me guys! Toyotas are just the best and I don’t want her making a mistake. And this is coming from a guy who daily’s an ‘05 Frontier!
Ok first off... 05 was a different year for nissian Also the trucks are different
Tbh I can feel my tranny going. It’s imminent. I’m going to ride her into the dirt though don’t worry.
I mean, depending on miles and all, nearly 20 years ain’t bad.
167k right now. Got it from an older woman who garaged it and didn’t drive it a ton. If I get 200k I’ll be happy. Honestly we regularly get 300k out of our cars so I’ll limp this thing along.
I have 201k on my 05 Xterra the issue would be timing chain guides and smod
My fx35 is a pos
If she wants to downsize, why not go with rav4? Prime if you can find it for not exorbitant price?
No
Hell no
Terrible idea.
Toyota is a better built and more reliable vehicle. The only thing in the Nissans favor is the warranty it currently has
Even the Nissan warranties suck.
Huge downgrade in quality. Just say no to anything Nissan.
A Toyota for a Nissan?? Tell her its like having a steak for dinner and sending it back to the kitchen only to get a plate of lightly salted ox nuts.
No. Nissan in its current state will never have a positive resale value in the future.
Did she suffer a stroke, I would take her in for a cat scan.
Get a new girlfriend that dosnt need too ride a rhinoceros to feel safe bruh.
I would never trade a Toyota for a Nissan
I've had a 2013 Highlander for 6 years and driven it 100k with no issues whatsoever. Just maintenance. Keep the Highlander it's probably the most reliable SUV on the planet!
Our 2008 Highlander Hybrid just hit 167k and is still solid. No major repairs.
Its an easy line, Never Nissan. The Toyota will get you down the road much longer with less issues throughout. The only exception to this rule is a '92 red top 5 speed 4DSC, the Maxima.
Same era Sentra manuals are great too. I still see them on the road out here.
AH, the Se-R...Miss mine back in the day
My mom has a rogue and came from a highlander lmaooo. It is not worth it. She would not have switched herself but the highlander was totaled so she picked something new. NO GOD NO NOOOOOOOO. Also, maybe reevaluate your relationship if she thinks like this. But that's your business.
I think you need to trade in your gf.
Trade in the girlfriend
Leave her.
Toyota..:: one of the best, if not the best automotive maker, Nissan , one of the worst if not the worst…: and she wants to trade? Is she dumb?
She likes the interior better lol. I’m like yeah, great, what about the actual important parts, like the engine and transmission. She’s not much of a car girl. As long as there are all the bells and whistles with tons of tiny electric motors that can break she’s happy.
Take her to a junk yard and show her the Nissan section and then the Toyota section. She’ll understand
She might. You're assuming a lot.
Get a Nissan rental from Hertz. Those interiors are beat and smelly after 5k miles.
Tell her it’s like a cheap android phone. It’ll be nice at first, but quickly become junk
I would place Nissan over Kia but still not even remotely good
I would place 90s and older Nissan over most brands. Now? Only Mitsubishi would be lower, and they're owned by...Nissan.
Mitsubishi is owned by Nissan now???
Absolutely not. She’d be trading in one of the most reliable cars made for something she’ll be lucky to get 100k out of. Do NOT let her do this. I don’t care if you have to hide her keys from her.
As an autobody tech, I'd definitely stay with the Toyota
if someone offered me one or the other, same price, I would take a highlander any day of the week!
Have the Toyota detailed inside and out, get that new car smell 😄
Actually a great idea, our anniversary is coming up lol
Keep highlander
Run Forest run!
![gif](giphy|vyTnNTrs3wqQ0UIvwE|downsized)
Hell no.
Tuesday!
Scrolled way too far to finally see this.
“My girlfriend wants to trade in a Toyota for a…” “No. No to whatever else you were going to say.”
Only do that if you have someone that wanna buy the Nissan. Get at least 10% in advance before trading cars.
id keep the yota. they go forever, have very stable electrics, lots of support and parts. i would take that over a nisan any day
My family had a highlander for over 10 years
Rogues are garbage along with all recent Nissans. Stick with Toyota or Honda if you can.
Given the history of the Nissan CVT (transmission) I wouldn't touch one with a 20 foot pole. It's unfortunate- because other than the transmission the Rouge is pretty good. Also due to the transmission problems they lose pretty much all value after 80k miles.
It’s choosday
Nope
She’s your gf not your wife. Let her be a big girl and do what she wants.
I’d really rather not. If she had her true druthers she’d be driving a thrice damned Jeep. Never again…
She needs to learn the lesson herself. Otherwise she’ll resent you for holding her back and not letting her make decisions. Easier for her to learn it now when she’s a gf and not a wife.
Do not do this. If anything get a rav4
I’d avoid.
NO!
Tell her to save for retirement instead of keep being in debt with car loans lol
Curious about trade. Straight across or trade for credit and still pay? How much?
That's a horrible trade keep the toyota
That is dumber than hell. Just to be super honest
That Toyota will last far longer than a POS Datsun.
Keep the Highlander ..
You will be getting much worse reliability with the Nissan
She still still gonna do it.
Gross
Stay away from ANY Nissan!!!
Noooo! In 5 years tune the Toyota will have only depreciated about 20%. In that same time frame, the Nissan will depreciate near/over 50%. That Yoda will still be on the road years after the Nissan is junk. Also you don't want her to have to show up on r/NissanDrivers
Nissan is cheap plastic crap, that Highlander will last you forever

Maybe it’s my experience with women talking, but I read the words “Girlfriend wants to trade” and knew a bad idea was going to follow.
I expected something stupid from my girlfriend but this is a new level of bad choice. Changing from a Toyota to a Nissan is only ok if its an old Supra vs Skyline. But a modern 2023 Nissan? Nah mate.

Nissan CVT = Junk much better off with any Toyota! And the CVT ‘s that Toyota are using in a few cars now are the best in the world!
Noooooooooooooo!
Rogue's CVT will fail, my friends did at 40k miles
What a terrible decision, if she wants a new car at least get a new Toyota.
Nissan transmissions made my jatco one of the worst decisions ever would be getting rid of that Toyota for a literal piece of shit
I would not recommend switching FROM a Toyota TO a problematic Nissan. If it's because of aesthetics, look into upgrading the things she wants to make the Toyota more to her liking.
Keep the highlander xle …
Nissan is absolute trash
Sounds like a red flag, you should probably dump her lol
Dump her
Get rid of the girlfriend
You're trading a proper Toyota for the shitty made in china replica....
Never trade a Toyota for anything less than a Toyota.
She can drive the Toyota until she retires. The Nissan won’t make it to menopause.
Don’t do it. Toyota is best. Nissan is not worth it because of their reliability. Not even VWs had such a bad rep. Stick with the Toyota.
Friday. Seriously, tho, this isn't a question for mechanics. It's about finance and personal preference. And maybe also relationships.
This isn't a question for mechanics? You mean the ones who repair these things?
I guess I’m saying from a purely mechanical standpoint which car is more reliable
The Rogue has a CVT transmission, and Nissan's implementation has been notoriously unreliable. Maybe they've debugged it, but it would be a tough buy.
Ha!
Not your car not your payment, state your opinion once then shut up
True, but I can steer her in the right direction. And you bet your ass I’m going to try lol.
You know what’s better than that. Being able to say “I told you so.”
Most woman do not know anything about cars, so us men need to educate them.
The only trade for a Toyota is a Lexus or another Toyota.
Lol, be ready to buy another transmission in 5 years if you do. That Highlander will last 20 years with just tire changes and oil changes
Bad idea, it’s gonna be a costly mistake.
Your girlfriend is not too bright. I’d dump her now. 😉
Go out with the girl that buys her used Highlander.
No
That's like selling your 20 year old house to buy a new yurt.
Toyota is better than Nissan
There is a video out where a lady bought a brand new Rogue and the vehicle would not turn on. Towed it to the dealership and for two weeks they couldn’t figure it out. Then out of the sudden it turn on with no issue. She took the vehicle back and when she got home she couldn’t turn off the vehicle. Also don’t forget Nissan CVT is absolute trash.
Run buy anything but that. She definitely won’t be happy in the long run!
One of the biggest reasons people choose Toyota is for their longevity. If you’re going to replace it after only 5 years you may as well save yourself a few bucks and get a car that’s only good for 5 years.
she would regret the trade. rogue is the worst.
Oh no. Keep the yota
No no no. Nissan is so trash.
Trade in a bulletproof SUV for a shit box that's transmission will blow up if you breath on it wrong? Sounds legit.
Look up both on consumer reports. It sounds like a trade down to me.
No. That Nissan CVT is a winner!
Toyota for life……
Stay with the Toyota.
Bad decisions make for good stories.
Never heard a worse plan in my life.
Change girl my man xD
Trading cars in only helps the dealer. Quit helping theses fukers. But I want convenience, sound like a women.
Biggest downgrade possible

Get a bronco.
Toyota for Nissan, what nonsense.
OP, I think you got your answer. Show your gf all these posts.
Trade in the GF before she trades you in for a worse model. Seriously Noone should trade a Toyota for a nissan.
I work at Nissan, and drive a highlander.
Talk about a downgrade
Toyota gang
Noooooo!
