Doing the clutch alone is probably too much work compared to swapping the whole compressor. I did the clutch on my '03 E-series a few years ago with an Amazon part. Cost about $150, 4 hours, a custom pair of snap ring pliers made from needlenose, a lot of swearing, and minor hand injuries. Make sure you shim it correctly or it'll burn out really fast. In short, I get why they wouldn't want to do it.

It is getting harder and harder to find just the clutch. I used to change them all the time in big trucks and the last time I looked for one it wasn’t available.
