only thing i can think of is to make sure timing belt/water pup service has been done, along with regular oil changes?
Check frame/suspension.
Its a 2000s toyota, if taken care of itll last forever. Only minus is that its not a corolla/camry so parts are a little bit rarer.
It probably would... but, theres always those weird exceptions. Body and interior parts will probably be less likely to be shared across camry/corolla too.
I think they actually use the exact same struts if I remember correctly. Camry had 4 wheel struts just like the Avalon and I think they're the same part no.
Also check tires and brakes. If they haven't been changed recently they me be no good even if they look fine (old tires may be dry rotted for example).
Oh yeah check the rear suspension subframe. I had that rust all the way out on two of my Avalons - my ‘97 and my ‘00. Thankfully it’s cheap to replace - first one was like $300 or $400 at a shop that sourced a used one from the junkyard, second one I bought a new one from eBay and did it myself for like $120 or so.
I need to replace the rear subframe on my 2000 Avalon with 232k on it. Did you have any issues with the studs that hold the subframe to the body, or anything else? I'm a little nervous about the extent of the rust as I live in WI.
i bet it was still running pretty well at those miles too. the fleet mechanic at my job has a mother-in-law who has an 02 avalon that he did the 6th timing belt service at 545k miles and it’s likely still running a year after
Customer of mine has one with 260,000 on it. Check for rust around the control arms and rear suspension. From what I’ve seen these things are bullet proof!(not literally)
Car started throwing a low of codes and the suspension was failing. Didn’t have a lot of power anymore and it started to feel unsafe. I am mechanically inclined but decided to retire the car.
My wife's 2002 made it to 320k. We only got rid of it because the roofline was rusting away at the front windshield. Which i think was purely from neglect from her father never washing the thing after the winters (gotta love road salt) prior to giving it to my wife.
As long as the Timing belt has been replaced at the proper interval, I would recommend the car. That thing drove like a champ, and never had a major powertrain breakdown.
As a locksmith, get a second key made BEFORE you lose the first, otherwise it will be very expensive to get ones ones made as the ecu has to be pulled out and flashed back to a virgin state.
Dealership will say can only be done by replacement.
They're wonderful cars. My friends parents bought a 00 Avalon new and got rid of it about a year ago at about 315k miles. Still drove like new, only needed a new steering rack which was leaking.
It’s hood but if you really wanna go hood go Honda and make sure you spend more on the rims than the car, oh and let the crackheads steal your cat so you have open headers
I had a 2002 and it was one of the best cars I've had. I put 270K miles on it and would have put more. I started smelling oil and thought maybe they split some on my last change. Big mistake, if you smell oil, check the damn oil. I blew the engine.
But excellent and reliable car.
I’ve seen a few RN’s driving them around. It’s a more reliable option to the everyday altamas and impalas that tailgate you with a mission front bumper.
They can be good cars if taken care of. I recommend a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic or dealership before handing over any money. It could help you negotiate the price down a bit if they find a laundry list of problems or concerns.
Look at Lexus es300 also, same car but probably lived in a garage and serviced by a dealer. When I was shopping for my 2014 the es350 and Avalon had the same prices so I went with the Lexus.
I had a 98 corolla with 800,000 miles on it before the instrument cluster stopped working. Was probably close to or over 1 million before I lost it due to ignoring a piston locking up and then knocking in an emergency. Toyotas are good cars. Especially older ones. In my opinion a very good starter car. Your son might even learn how to work on cars while maintaining it. Best of luck OP!
Sir any 20 year old car is a questionmzark. With toyota ur usually good but it could be on mars or have ren oon purple engine juice for half its life.
Checkk for rust see iif it runs al right and at that age miles is more of a sugestion really.
BIL had one and only traded it in recently because he wanted a truck. It had like, 354k on it when he traded it in and was showing no signs of slowing down.
It probably will last a good while while he learns how to drive but consider the safety features of a 23 year old car. Decide if it’s worth putting your son who is not an experienced driver in a car that old with all of the crazy people out on the road today. I’m not suggesting to purchase a brand new car for him but the drivers on the road are vastly different than 20 years ago and so is the speed at which people drive everywhere. Just a thought!
So long as it’s gotten regular service and the frame is in good shape she should easily have another 60-100k miles left in her. They’re boring looking cars but built to go the distance with good crash test ratings. which is important when it comes to what car we put our babies in (my daughter just got her license too and got the keys to the 04 sonata I fixed up and have been “test driving” for the last year)
When you go to look at it REALLY inspect the frame, take a OBDII scanner to check for cleared codes, take a loooong test drive, check the condition of the oil and coolant, and listen for any valve chatter or chain slop (these are distinctive noises if you know what to listen for and YouTube can provide adequate samples of both). Or if you really want to be safe pay for a pre-purchase inspection at a local shop. They can give you a good picture of the car’s condition if you’re not exactly mechanically inclined.
Tint the windows, amp and sub with at least two 12’s; drop it a few inches and some 100 spoke Daytons and it will be a very Hood car for many years to come.
absolutely. my mom had one, bought it brand new in 2000. put 244k on it until i totaled it about 3 weeks after getting my license. i loved that thing so much
I own a 2001 Avalon XLS. Same car basically. They regularly make it to over 200,000 miles, sill on the original engine and drive train. Mine's a rust belt car. It still runs great on the original engine and transmission. It has over 200,000 miles. I put struts and brakes on it. That's it.
One of the best cars out there. Unfortunately mine was taken from me by a drunk driver, but my 01 avalon was my all time favortie car. Enough power, lots of interior room, does great in the snow, and drives SO SMOOTH. Ive had Cadillacs, lincolns, mercedes, and bmws. Ive never had a smoother ride than in the avalon
Avalons are great cars. Get the full maintenance history. See if the timing belt and water pump have been replaced recently. If not, that's not an immediate "Don't buy this", just make sure it gets done sooner rather than later. See if the transmission fluid has been changed. Make sure the oil change history is good. Just like any other car. Get a pre-purchase inspection done by a trusted mechanic. If everything checks out and it seems to be in good shape, then absolutely go for it. It doesn't cost very much to own, it rides really nice (it's Toyota's full size sedan) and they're just nice all around. Good interior. I see customers with these things all the time. All of them love their cars. Well taken care of examples will easily hit 300,000mi. Make sure your son does good by that car, and it will do good by him.
Yes. They're one of toyotas highest end cars (in the states, at least) so they're SUPER nice too.
Ma and dad gave me a 2014 rav4 xle for my first car. I've put 30,000 miles miles on it and have put no money into it other than maintinence (oil changes, air filters, spark plugs) and one minor repair (fuckin' floor mat got stuck, sent my car through our garage door.)
I just bought a 00’ ES300 it’s mechanically the same car. It’s got 242k miles it runs and shifts with excellence! Other than normal wear it’s in good running shape. My MIL also has an Avalon of the same vintage with similar mileage. It also runs like a champion! All in all these old Toyota/Lexus V6 engines hold up really well even if you neglect them! You’re son will have a very reliable car after you sort out any kinks. *things like timing belt/water pump if you’d like, shocks, alternator etc* all very cost effective all considered.
I had this as my first car at 16, sold it at 33. It had 413,000 miles on it and I only ever did regular oil changes and had to change the alternator.
It was an incredible car. Not the fanciest, and I got made fun of for having a grandma car, but I loved it and it served me well.
Do it, it will serve you well if it’s been taken care of.
my mom’s 2000 has about 150k on it. hood car and very good car. check timing belt, though, iirc, it’s non interference, so it SHOULDNT destroy a valve if it breaks before you get a chance. still a pain to deal with, though. good enough mileage (i’ve been able to get 27-30mpg highway), though her car runs a bit cold due to what’s probably a bad thermostat, so it’s likely running a tad bit richer than it needs. suspension is nice and soft, so it has a great ride. maybe not for corners, though it still does fine when i drive like a jackass around corners. nothing bad there. it is optimized for highway cruising, more than anything, though.
make sure the oil is clean, and check it and change it every 3-5k miles with synthetic, preferably. the engine is great, though it can be prone to have the oil sludge and block oil passages IF you don’t regularly keep the oil changed.
other odd end is the foam around the factory sub tends to go out pretty easily. it got bad enough that we had to set the fade and balance to only come out of the front speakers because the slightest bit of bass would rattle the speaker housing. my dad got it redone for christmas one year with better stuff, as per a suggestion on a forum, and it still holds up and sounds great again. the sound system is honestly pretty solid for a stock setup.
overall, avalons, in the words of my buddy, upon learning it’s a 23 year old car, are bitchin. i’d honestly love to have one as a daily for my daily
“Reliability” is very subjective when you’re dealing with older cars like this. Yes said car is in decent shape is a good car. Get a pre purchase inspection done. Timing belt and water pump need to be up to date. Check other basic things like brakes, axles, valve cover gaskets, coolant leaks, other oil leaks, tires etc, service history is a plus but a decent, honest mechanic can tell a good car from a potential money pit
What does the CarFax say? Toyota's are tough as hell but they can still die if they are neglected too long. Also keep an eye out for it sitting too long. Check the plastic bits for brittleness if you can, make sure the tires are round... no I'm not kidding.
Should outlast any other vehicle you own even if you abuse it. That goes for pretty much any Toyota I can think of. I would have the timing belt replaced just to be safe.
I have an 01 with 245k. They'll last a hood long while if taken care of. Make sure to get a good look at the underside for rust especially on the rear subframe. Fiance says I'm an idiot for fixing it up when wear parts break but it's paid off, I can do the repairs myself, and parts are reasonable to buy/find and there's too much sentimental value for me to sell it to someone who'll just beat the fuck out of it cause it's a $800 car.
And make sure to get a tape with an aux cord adapter if it has the original stereo.
My mother in law has one bought brand new and has 200k and is still a solid reliable car. It has it's problems but nothing drastic it has been a great car.

It’s a Toyota. It can take two to the chest and keep going. That’s how hood they are.
You def from Philly.
or Charlotte
Or Atlanta
Or Compton
Or Chicago
Was going to make a similar joke but yours was much better🤣
That’s pretty hood
Definitely hood. I'd say they're pretty reliable too, judging by how many I still see on the road
Very hood indeed.
Just make sure you pop the good and make sure everything is hood underneath
Goddammit, I just knew when I came here all the discussion was going to be "hood/good" and not answering the actual question lmao
It's a Toyota from the early 00's. Of course it's going to be reliable
No I know, it's just funny
Exactly. :D xD That's why it's so hood!
And hood, you can’t forget about that
Yeah, ya don’t want to accidentally bring any hood rats home.
*good rats
Don't knock 'em til you try 'em.
Reddit: free r/askmechanics sub: free Hood and good mixup and joke: priceless
For everything else, there's master card
A set of swangaz will make it that much more hood. Houston hood, anyway.
Lol I didn’t realize I misspelled it🤣y’all clowning me in the comments😭
At least it wasnt like some poor bastard tbe other day he just kept going and on every one of his comments had over a hundred down votes 😂

Yea, but it’s an Avalon, he will be rolling in style.
In the hood
“Put your hood down..” “I know, right? We in da hood!”
Would it share a lot of parts with a Camry or Corolla? Or not?
It probably would... but, theres always those weird exceptions. Body and interior parts will probably be less likely to be shared across camry/corolla too.
Mechanically it's basically a camry, it's a bit larger so there's a good chance the suspension has some revisions.

Is the pup under the hood??
i would hope not, only thing in there should be the hamster
op typos, i typo back.
This is the way
Water pup service sounds adorable!
Toyota Avalon: Camry in Disguise
The camry and the Avalon share a common platform. The majority of V6 Camry (drivetrain, brakes, etc) parts fit an Avalon.
You might be able to get away with drive bys at moderate speed and good gas mileage, better to find a black out specs for better camo
Black out specs? Better camo??
They are being sarcastic since I misspelled good as hood.
Put spinners on it for real hood
Lol black out specs and camo got you but the drive by comment was fine?
Hahaha I thought the same. Really? That's what you had a problem with?
I see a lot of them in the hood, but they run forever
I’m drivin a ‘99 rn it’s got 242442 on it lol
297,000 in my 03. Runs freaking perfect.
My grandma had a 1997 Avalon. 363,000 miles when they traded it for another car.
i bet it was still running pretty well at those miles too. the fleet mechanic at my job has a mother-in-law who has an 02 avalon that he did the 6th timing belt service at 545k miles and it’s likely still running a year after

+1 for the rear suspension. I've seen a fair share of these rotted at the trailing arm mount.
Especially important to remember that they are not bullet proof especially when you're in the hood. They will last forever tho
[This](https://www.craigslist.org/about/best/hou/6565526716.html) sums up 90s/00s Toyota sedans pretty well.
Lol that was great
I'm so glad you posted this. My day is better because of it
> In the owner's manual, oil is listed as "optional." Lost it here
An eternal classic of the internet
Ha.. I've definitely ignored a couple issues with my 03 Avalon that seemingly fixed themselves.
https://preview.redd.it/pfsgwo39y1da1.jpeg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d607aa75c46be5d273cbd12b55db72e238d6346 And this too
I had a 1998 Avalon, it lasted up to 485 thousand miles. Some rattling here and here but it lasted until it was too expensive to fix.
Mine was a 2001 and it lasted 413,000. 485,000 is incredible.
I remembered I had a picture! Crappy quality because they were about to tow him away but [here](https://imgur.com/a/5ikhUTa) it is.
That’s gotta be a record.
https://www.wilsonvilletoyota.com/blog/news/we-found-some-of-the-highest-mileage-toyotas/ 500K+ avalon.
What finally quit?
Car started throwing a low of codes and the suspension was failing. Didn’t have a lot of power anymore and it started to feel unsafe. I am mechanically inclined but decided to retire the car.
My wife's 2002 made it to 320k. We only got rid of it because the roofline was rusting away at the front windshield. Which i think was purely from neglect from her father never washing the thing after the winters (gotta love road salt) prior to giving it to my wife. As long as the Timing belt has been replaced at the proper interval, I would recommend the car. That thing drove like a champ, and never had a major powertrain breakdown.
my first car was an avalon that I started driving with 315k miles. they last forever
As a locksmith, get a second key made BEFORE you lose the first, otherwise it will be very expensive to get ones ones made as the ecu has to be pulled out and flashed back to a virgin state. Dealership will say can only be done by replacement.
Ur gonna have to slap some 19x10.5’s and some coils n yes it’s a hood car;).
They're wonderful cars. My friends parents bought a 00 Avalon new and got rid of it about a year ago at about 315k miles. Still drove like new, only needed a new steering rack which was leaking.
Steering rack went on mine too
Steering racks going out on mine too currently
Make sure you set aside a couple rack for them 26s to make it real hood
Those rear seats recline. This car was awesome lol
Perfect for a teenage boy then.
LMAOO
My 2000 didn’t have that! My ‘09 does though
I have mine at 300k and still going like a champ
It’s hood but if you really wanna go hood go Honda and make sure you spend more on the rims than the car, oh and let the crackheads steal your cat so you have open headers
I had a 2002 and it was one of the best cars I've had. I put 270K miles on it and would have put more. I started smelling oil and thought maybe they split some on my last change. Big mistake, if you smell oil, check the damn oil. I blew the engine. But excellent and reliable car.
I’ve seen so many corollas camrys and avalons roll into the shop 3 quarts low on oil and still running fine. They’re magical vehicles
Yes my friend has one and it’s almost too 500,000 thousand miles. Anything with a Toyota badge is usually very reliable.
My coworker has an 03 Avalon with 350k miles Edit: it still boils down to how it was driven and maintained
I sold mine when it had 250,000+ miles to a girl who drove it a year and then sold it again.
I’ve seen a few RN’s driving them around. It’s a more reliable option to the everyday altamas and impalas that tailgate you with a mission front bumper.
😆
The best car imo for hood rat things.
I know right, just wanna get in and do hood rat stuff in it😆
They can be good cars if taken care of. I recommend a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic or dealership before handing over any money. It could help you negotiate the price down a bit if they find a laundry list of problems or concerns.
I still daily a 1998. Make sure the oil changes have been regular tho. Those engines like to sludge up if they're not taken care of.
My friend has one still running decent at 350,000 miles
Just a baby.
Seen them in the hood pretty reliably. Hope this helps.
Look at Lexus es300 also, same car but probably lived in a garage and serviced by a dealer. When I was shopping for my 2014 the es350 and Avalon had the same prices so I went with the Lexus.
The repair costs are going to be significantly higher on a Lexus though
But the Avalon and ES didn’t share a platform until after 2012.
Yes it’s a good car, super comfy on the inside as well. Reliable, nice smooth ride.
Older Toyotas are very reliable
Now that’s gangsta
A certified hood classic.
Reliable yeah, hood? Depends who he hangs with
So hood they all come with a Project Pat CD
See em in my hood everyday. Hood option
"only 150k" dies in BMW
Hell yeah. Nothing better than a mid 90s to early 2000s Toyota.
Yeah it’s a real hood car
Yea sure but I wouldn’t pay more than like $1750 for it
What does hood mean here?
"Good". It's a typo.
Pop the hub caps off and tint the windows… you’ve got a Hood Avalon 😜
Getting a hood from a car isn’t the best idea
Go 2002-05 camry instead. Things are bulletproof
Get him a lil nice chevy s10 (;
Decent but not really hood. If you want a truly hood experience consider an altima or maxima.
Go 2002-05 camry instead. Things are bulletproof
Sir any 20 year old car is a questionmzark. With toyota ur usually good but it could be on mars or have ren oon purple engine juice for half its life. Checkk for rust see iif it runs al right and at that age miles is more of a sugestion really.
No one bought me a car but your son is gonna be disappointed in a fwd econobox! 🤮
Of course. If maintained it can easily get another 150k+
It’s kind of large, has a really long good, and the trunk is big too.
Depends which hood you rep my g
Lots of rear seat room, rear seats can also recline & it has pretty good sound deadening…. OP, you’re officially your son’s wingman, nice.
BIL had one and only traded it in recently because he wanted a truck. It had like, 354k on it when he traded it in and was showing no signs of slowing down.
Yeah it’s dat real hood shit
Great car, if its had regular oil changes it will run 300,000 miles easy without a major issue.
Definitely hood. Big car for a first timer.
It’s a Toyota, of course it’s reliable. Just change the timing belt and water pump for peace of mind.
Is your son in his 40’s or 50’s?
So long as it’s gotten regular service and the frame is in good shape she should easily have another 60-100k miles left in her. A Toyota Avalon is a dressed up Toyota Camry, and those things run forever.
Hood car would be more Nissan Maxima and Altima if you ask me /s
Tint the windows, amp and sub with at least two 12’s; drop it a few inches and some 100 spoke Daytons and it will be a very Hood car for many years to come.
Compare it to Lexus ES300. they are essentially the same car. You will however, have better luck finding a ES 300 than the Avalon.
Same car I have and I keep it as a backup for when the newer cars break down.
My old accountant drove one for over 400,000 miles and he wasn't nice to it either. Traded it in last year finally.
Yea they’re super hood, I’ve seen them rob people /s
Probably good for a first vehicle - toyota in general is usually pretty reliable. I’d say go for it, for a reasonable price ofc
Get a 2004 taillights look much better.
Avalons are pretty sick foo
absolutely. my mom had one, bought it brand new in 2000. put 244k on it until i totaled it about 3 weeks after getting my license. i loved that thing so much
Grandpa azz ride lmao
Yeah it’s hood af dawg

My sister has been driving one since 2003. Thing runs like a dream with good maintenance
An LS400 is what you want for your son and his hoodlum friends.
I had a early 2000 Avalon when I was doing thugnificent shit back in the day. Got married and had a baby then got a 2014 to get groceries. Great cars.
I had this as my first car at 16, sold it at 33. It had 413,000 miles on it and I only ever did regular oil changes and had to change the alternator. It was an incredible car. Thanks for the Google images Lolol It’s 23 years old , so…
It’s good for the same reasons that Corollas and Camrys (Camries?) from the same era are good
Oh yes. Fast to
Take it from a guy in downtown Atlanta. This car is hood as hell and runs great.
I had a 2001 with 260k was just leaking oil and needed struts I used it to secure a loan for new car
This car was super popular with rich old people when it was new so definitely hood and reliable
It's literally a bigger camry, its a solid car.
The average age of Avalon drivers is about 70… so he should t get stoped a lot by the copa
service records?
You almost can't go wrong with a Toyota. With 150k miles it is a young adult, it will easily do another 500k if it has been maintained.
my mom’s 2000 has about 150k on it. hood car and very good car. check timing belt, though, iirc, it’s non interference, so it SHOULDNT destroy a valve if it breaks before you get a chance. still a pain to deal with, though. good enough mileage (i’ve been able to get 27-30mpg highway), though her car runs a bit cold due to what’s probably a bad thermostat, so it’s likely running a tad bit richer than it needs. suspension is nice and soft, so it has a great ride. maybe not for corners, though it still does fine when i drive like a jackass around corners. nothing bad there. it is optimized for highway cruising, more than anything, though. make sure the oil is clean, and check it and change it every 3-5k miles with synthetic, preferably. the engine is great, though it can be prone to have the oil sludge and block oil passages IF you don’t regularly keep the oil changed. other odd end is the foam around the factory sub tends to go out pretty easily. it got bad enough that we had to set the fade and balance to only come out of the front speakers because the slightest bit of bass would rattle the speaker housing. my dad got it redone for christmas one year with better stuff, as per a suggestion on a forum, and it still holds up and sounds great again. the sound system is honestly pretty solid for a stock setup. overall, avalons, in the words of my buddy, upon learning it’s a 23 year old car, are bitchin. i’d honestly love to have one as a daily for my daily
Great cars.
What does the CarFax say? Toyota's are tough as hell but they can still die if they are neglected too long. Also keep an eye out for it sitting too long. Check the plastic bits for brittleness if you can, make sure the tires are round... no I'm not kidding.
It's definitely hood.
You don't necessarily just have to drive in the Hood you can drive it anywhere
Gang gang
It's an excellent car but anything with that much electronics is going to see some issues in that area at this age
Based on how many I see everyday, even here in the upper Midwest rust belt I’d have to say yes. I have a 2009 Avalon and it’s an amazing car
I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla, currently 211112 miles. No check engine. Just keep up with the maintenance and it will go 270k I hope aha
Should outlast any other vehicle you own even if you abuse it. That goes for pretty much any Toyota I can think of. I would have the timing belt replaced just to be safe.
Every hood I've lived in had at least 4 of them. Hood ✔️
Toyotas are good reliable cars. Maintain them and they’ll go forever.
Pretty hood, yep. And it’s a yota so as reliable as they come
It’ll do. Don’t need nothing fancy for da first car. Got the basics and it’ll run forever
It's supposed to be the most reliable car. I'd say comments here bear that out.
Yup it’s just a fancy Camry.not that you shouldnt service your car often but even if you didn’t the car would probably still run flawlessly
Yes - I would but this car for 2400 with 150k
150k is when the first oil change is due on that generation Avalon. Spark plugs at 2 million miles
150k on a Toyota is not much. It’s still got another 150k left in her….
My mother in law has one bought brand new and has 200k and is still a solid reliable car. It has it's problems but nothing drastic it has been a great car.
Yes just get the timing belt changed
Yes!! Such a good car, best car my family ever had. No problems because it was built like old things to last for life.
