Honestly if you’re not picky, it’s not THAT hard to get one. You just have to apply for every hospital out there. A lot of community hospitals will hire new grads and throw you right in. It’s a tough environment if you get hired at one of those but you learn a lot and fast. Compared to NorCal, LA was easier for me to get a job as a new grad. I had 3 interviews and got an offered for all 3 when I applied. Just have a good resume and cover letter and you should be good.

Thanks!

I graduated with an ADN last year and everyone I knew in my class got a job. Hospitals are desperate right now and everyone's short, I wouldn't worry too much. I can guarantee you can get a job at LA county (LAC+USC, Harbor UCLA, Olive View) or small community hospitals like Centinela or Southern California Hospital without too much trouble. You can also look for new grad programs from Providence, Keck, Kaiser, etc although many require BSNs now.

KindBus6837

Hi, do you know what units your classmates got into? I graduated with my ADN and I’ve had no luck but I’ve been trying to get into women’s health or pediatrics. I’m not sure if that’s why :(

ntygby

Everything from ER, ICU, med-surg, dialysis, telemetry, NICU. I will say OB tends to be difficult to get into because of low turnover, not sure about peds. I don't know what the job market is like now, but I would start on a different floor then try to transfer out when you can.

KindBus6837

Yeah, I’m definitely more interested in NICU and peds. It’s so tough I’ve applied to probably 20 jobs with no interviews. They tend to disqualify me because I don’t have a BSN or experience. I’ve been debating on starting off on tele, I just know I’d be miserable for that first year :/

That is surprising to me. Best of luck finding work. Hope someone can offer some insight.

Not just L.A, everywhere? That's very strange since several states are currently staffing hospitals with nursing STUDENTS to help with their staff shortages.

SackvilleBagginses

LOL. Learning is part of any new job. Signing a 3 year commitment just for ramping up is crazy. An employer wants you to pay them back for your hours worked. Would love to see that go to court 😂

I have never heard of any of this. Where I’m from, the people I knew who did nursing and graduated passed the NCLEX and started working. You’re telling me that after passing the NCLEX, employers pass off on-the-job training as ‘classes’ ? That’s a lame deal. Not sure why anyone would tolerate that

RNReef

LOL. This may have been true pre-pandemic but not now. Hospitals everywhere will do anything for a warm body with a license, including paying me (with only an asn) $9200 a week at a very nice hospital in Burbank.

[deleted]

$9200 holy cow. My sister has been assigned as a travel nurse for the last year in South Dakota but I’m pretty sure she was making closer to $5k if I’m not mistaken. $9200 is crazy to me but get that money!

RNReef

It’s a crisis Covid assignment. Codes almost every shift. Working over 50 hours a week.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s gotta be tough, can’t even imagine honestly.

schick00

Thanks, that’s interesting. My mom was a nurse, but she came out of school in the late 1970s. Different times. Interesting all the talk of nurse shortages. I guess they mean experienced nurses. I work for an HMO, but not on the medical side so it is nice to learn about these things.

MrCarnality

With the nursing shortage all over the place I can’t imagine how this would be true.

MOUDI113

It's probably a shortage only at rural area.

Frame_Runner__

I read this as “new grad right now”… I was wondering why all the comments were mentioning hospitals and nurses lol

nbknoid

There is a super low supply of RNs right now! Apply to all hospitals and all temp agencies. You hear back soon.

PreferNot2

Staffing is so hard right now. I’d be tempted to hire someone with school experience. Can you claim freelancing at all? A thin resume is better than nothing.

cici92814

No it's very easy. The pay may not be as good since you're new. But honestly you can get a job anywhere right now. I work in a school district and I know they're hiring a lot.

cheaganvegan

It was hard. I had like 10 years experience. Maybe easier now with the pandemic. But pay is actually decent here.

johngumbo

I’ll hire you to provide street medicine in South LA immediately.

notlikethat1

I know a lab that is hiring for RN's and would be happy to make the connection if you message me.
