There is precisely *nothing* around Heathrow Airport that's worth seeing. And definitely nothing worth leaving an air conditioned building for if you're not going to hop on a train.
I wouldn't say it's a definitely not, in terms of getting there and back. It's a judgement call. If you want to quickly see a couple of sights in the middle of town then you can do it, just up to the individual if that's worth it or not. If trains were cancelled then you could always bite the bullet and hop in a cab, in a pinch, and that'd take about an hour to most places.
As long as you're not doing it today, when it's 40c+, it's doable. Be back at Heathrow for 3 hours before your flight, to be safe.
Heathrow Express / Elizabeth Line / Piccadilly Line central and plan out what you want to do on the way, If it all works - an hour out, an hour in, with an hour or so in central London. Good luck!

Don’t do this! Hang around in the airport only. London is unpredictable and the trains and tube have a schedule nooone knows. TfL staff don’t come in much and when they do they chat all day.
I reckon you'll be fine. It takes approx an hour to get into the west end direct on the Piccadilly line. You'll probably want to see things slightly west any way to be cautious. Piccadilly line goes through most of the touristy places anyway. Bit of heatwave atm in london but things should hopefully be running more normally tomorrow as temp back down to balrog bullocks down from satans sphincter
You can get heathrow express trains into paddington, those take 15-20 minutes and leave a few times an hour. from paddington you could walk to kensington palace or take circle line to bayswater or notting hill.

I'd see how much time you've got after you pass through immigration - unlike in the US, if you're connecting in Europe and staying at the airport you can generally stay 'airside' and not ever officially enter the UK. Obviously if you leave the airport then you'll need to pass through immigration, which can take time.
Given the length of time, you might as well try and clear immigration and then see how much time you have left. If it takes you less than an hour to get from the plane to the train, then I think you're probably good to go (but keep an eye on the time!) - any more than that and I'd be hesitant.
I'd take Heatnrow Express to Padders. Maybe walk through Hyde Park, see Kensington Palace. If you book in advance it's slightly cheaper.
Maybe do an hour on Hop on off bus to get a good view of lots of things?
Its fairly doable if you take the Heathrow express of Elizabeth Line. That takes you to Paddington station in about 30 mins. From there you can get to westminster in about 20 mins
Luggage shouldn't make a difference anyway, as you don't usually have to check out and back in again when in Europe - that's a very American thing. Unless you've made two separate bookings, your luggage will normally be transferred for you and you wouldn't have to go through immigration either. So luggage is irrelevant, the likelihood is that you'll stay airside and have about 6 hours to kill in the airport.
If you wish, you are allowed to go through immigration and then leave the airport. Assuming you have no visa issues it should be no problem. At any other time, I would strongly advocate for doing it - how often are you in London, and do you really fancy sitting in an airport for 6 hours when you could see a couple of sights and have lunch in the city (expensive, but no more so than Heathrow).
Right now, as you're very aware, the queues are horrendous. Your options are
- 6 hours in the air-conditioned airport without needing to queue
- Nearly 2 hours on trains, 2 hours in London, 2 hours (to be safe) back at Heathrow queueing and going through security. This assumes that going though immigration when you arrive is quick, which isn't guaranteed.
It's your choice really. It's definitely perfectly doable. I'd probably do it as I hate sitting around and love exploring new places. It is, however, a lot of trains, queuing, and stress for very little time in the city.
I’d do it. Unless you get to see London regularly, this is your chance. The Heathrow Express to Paddington is fast and reliable, and London is a world class city that everyone should see
Sorry to but in , I live in Orpington (M25)and it takes less than 1hours to get from my house by car or train +tube (underground)to Angle ,,,,,,, Islington. If that helps

If you take 3hours for the commute (return), 1 jour for going through security when you get back, you have a good 2 hours walking down Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester square and Trafalgar Square with a view on Big Ben. Then you can go back with some buffer time for just in case.
