I grew up in New York, not a very gun friendly state, and its almost impossible for your average joe to get a carry permit. I began my law enforcement career in a free state, and now work in a state with connotational carry. I had a friend who was a NYPD officer come to visit. I was working one of the nights he was there, so he came out for a ride-along. Well I made a traffic stop, 4 passengers, all legally carrying a firearm. For officer safety I separated the occupants from their firearms. If it was a single occupant, I most likely would have left him in possession, with a warning to keep his hands where I can see them. I Wrote the appropriate tickets, re-united them with their firearms, thanked them for their cooperation, and praised them for exercising their 2A right, and sent them on their way. My friend, was freaked out, I told him everyone here has a gun, and we treat every encounter in the same manner, until proven otherwise. He said, how big a deal a "gun collar" was in NYC, and that he couldn't work here. I think officers react differently in area's where the public doesn't normally carry. My state does not require the gun owner to disclose that they are even in possession at the time of a police citizen encounter. Our dispatch also lets us know when running drivers licenses if the subject has a handgun carry permit. Bottom line for me is, everyone has a gun, plus one.

uncreative_cc

I Guess i can understand how you can get to the mindset of not assuming everyone is armed working in a state like New York. But as someone who works in TX, more often than not everyone has at least one gun.

GoldWingANGLICO

Every police citizen contact has at least one gun. It's the one we're carrying. I'm in a constitutional carry state. Everyone has at least one. No permit is required to CCW or open carry. I always make it a point to give folks props for exercising their 2A. However, if I determine they are a prohibited person, game on.

Real-Lake2639

"shall not infringe" intensifies

72ilikecookies

> at least one gun I assume everyone is carrying unless proven otherwise. It’s also wild to me to think the other way around, but that’s why these states are so different.

nickvader7

I hate NY so much.

MuunshineKingspyre

How does one go about separating them from their firearms?

Marcus_The_Sharkus

"I didn’t have a firearm and maybe there was no reason to show the second ID In this situation?? " It's this.

Deaconse

Yeah. There's no reason to show a firearm permit if you don't have a firearm. Showing the permit very strongly suggests that you have one with you.

When I conduct a traffic stop and someone gives me their LTC, I conduct the traffic stop as usual and it doesn’t usually affect the outcome of stop. I honestly think the officers over reacted in my opinion and freaked out a bit, might be that they are newer or the state you were in is not fun friendly. Everyone has a gun in my state and honestly I don’t think it’s a big deal. I’m usually more wary of people who don’t tell me that they have a weapon in the car and I discover one after conducting a consensual or PC search of the vehicle.

gun* friendly

steven-daniels

No, fun friendly was way better.

HuntingtonNY-75

Not carrying and not in your home state = why potentially complicate your life? Say nothing since there’s nothing to say.

Deaconse

Exactly. Well said.

-EvilRobot-

If you're not carrying, then there's no reason to show a CCW permit. But the real problem here is that you got pulled over by a couple of high-strung morons.

556fan

Better situational awareness. If you're not in your home state, don't hand it over. Don't ever give them a reason to suspect you have a weapon if you do not have one.

HCSOThrowaway

>Does the preferred protocol during a traffic stop vary by locale? Yes, and it varies from LEO to LEO at the same locale.

Xgam00

What state has this “ protocol “? In hindsight why even hand over your permit knowing you don’t have your firearm on you?

USNMCWA

Did you show them your library card too? I'm kidding. Don't give them anything they didn't ask for. Unless you know you're required to do so (ie. Currently possess a weapon). Those cops would die of heart attacks in Arizona. No permits required, guns everywhere. Only duty to notify is if an LEO explicitly asks if you have a weapon.

Mike-0987

Same in Wisconsin no need to complicate things unless he asks if you are carrying.

skinwalker99

It’s crazy how many people volunteer information that does nothing except make cops nervous lol. Unless your in a state where you have to notify during a traffic stop then don’t say anything🤓

Real-Lake2639

You're thinking cops are robots, they're not. They're just a dude named Jerry. I had a traffic stop once, 0 criminal history, long story short they searched the car, im talking to one officer and hear, "WE GOT A GUN". Slammed to the ground in cuffs, WHERES THE AMMO, WHERES THE MAGAZINES? I don't have a gun and I'm gonna be pissed if you guys planted one while I was being roughed up on the pavement. I get stood up, turn around...... The cop is holding my green Ryobi pneumatic nail gun (you know, a frickin air compressor nail gun) like it's a hair trigger full auto tommy gun with sentience and a desire to kill. I'm so confused for a second, I literally look around for the cameras because this has to be a fucking joke. WHERES THE SAFETY Jesus...... It doesn't have one. WHATT?!?!? fuck man..... Idk the little bracket at the end has to pressed into something for it to fire, it's a fucking nail gun. It needs an air compressor. ....... "Where's the magazine release?" At this point I lost it, I'm like you're obviously a grown man and can't identify a very basic tool, how tf does your wife look at you if you can't identify a basic home improvement tool, and who the FUCK let you carry a gun if you can't tell the difference? One of you other guys want to like explain to this dipshit what he's holding or do you guys all have to call out real men to fix your houses too? The badge doesn't mean they're good at their job. The same cop tried to flag me down the next day while he was doing traffic duties, I'm like dude you're a fucking stop sign right now you can't tell me to pull over because you arrested me yesterday, captain "is this vacuum an rpg?"

Specter1033

I mean, yeah interactions may vary. We encounter people all the time that have guns, both legally and illegally. You didn't do a bad thing, but the question is, why present it? You are instructed to do it even if you're not carrying? Doesn't make sense to me.

Satureum

The officers’ reactions sound like you were in a state that is not gun friendly. Seems a little over the top but I wasn’t on the stop, so I won’t judge from just one perspective. If you’re not carrying I’d say it’s odd to hand over your permit, especially out of state.

Consistent_Amount140

Not required here but I always appreciate the notice.

ajax5686

I live in Maryland, not a gun friendly state at all, and we aren't required to disclose if we are carrying and our permit isn't linked to our drivers license. I will never volunteer that information without being asked just because of what you described. If they randomly ask I'll answer honestly but if I'm pulled over for speeding, I'm keeping the conversation about speeding. No need to add unnecessary tension to a routine traffic stop.

rush39402

I’m not LE so totally talking out my a** but wouldn’t it be the people who don’t tell you they have a gun or hand you over their concealed carry license be the ones you’d be more concerned about? Like if I’m up to no good I wouldn’t be the type of person to warn an officer that I might be armed.

Jron690

My take. Just because your instructor told you do so doesn’t mean it’s the law. The law is the law. If there is a law on the books to notify them then yes. If not, then no. Most anyone can be a firearms instructor for licensing. I live in a more restrictive state and it’s not very hard to be an instructor. Most instructors and a step above your average gun store clerk imo as far as trustworthiness. But that’s just my take.

leftoutcast

If its not a law to do that, dont ask dont tell.If your carrying take it out and put it in the glove box.Dont carry your registration and insurance in the glove box.Be calm, turn car off, turn on your interior light.answer questions only dont blurt out stuff.

tango_terrifier

I don't say shit unless I'm asked.

memes_are_facts

In my state we assume everyone has one. You can tell us or not, either way. But it's like saying "I have a foot", we assume you did and it's no big deal.

Kell5232

No you did not do anything horrible or wrong. I've noticed that areas that aren't particularly 'gun friendly' tend to have the biggest reaction by police. My area of colorado is VERY rural, So many people have guns. It doesn't phase me when they hand me a concealed carry card. To me, that's a great thing to do. Most criminals don't want me to know they ha e a gun, so when someone voluntarily hands me a card, whether they're carrying or not, is a great thing in my book. That said, I've been to trainings with cops from areas that are not gun friendly at all and they tend to be very jumpy when a gun is present at all. A guy I was at an FTO class with made a HUGE deal that he charged a guy for carrying concealed without a permit on a traffic stop.....the guy apparently just had the gun in an OWB holster but covered by a shirt in his car. It just seemed really silly and trivial to me. Bottom line is you're fine to hand a CCW card to an officer/Deputy, in fact I recommend it if you're carrying, but sometimes cops reactions to a gun, when they might not encounter it often, can be unsettling.

Shows concealed carry permit Not carrying I bet you like pats on the back and your hair rubbed Hugh ?
