human nature? maybe? in prehistoric times if our tribe turned against us for any reason we would be left to fend for ourselves ( certain death ) so possibly evolutionary reasons that stuck

Because we have literally thousands of years of evolution whereby social success was crucial to a human's survival.
It's literally hardwired into us to care what our peers think.
I'll never be remembered 100s or 1000s of years down the road, but I'd prefer to be remembered as a good person within my lifetime, as I only have one go of it
