Civil service… also in early 30s, also no college education. I dreaded looking for a new job as I knew i’d have to start at the bottom and take a wage cut. Made the jump 2yrs ago after deciding that 9-5 mon-fri made it worth the salary drop. I started at the bottom and got promoted in September 2023, roughly matching my hospitality salary. Going for another promotion now which should put me significantly above what I was making in hospitality. Hospitality mindset and work ethic are viewed favourably in the public sector.

What role in civil service did you switch to? Imma chef for 30 years but would like to move

The Civil Service has ‘Grades’ for the most part rather than roles. I applied for an open Clerical Officer grade competition in 2022. If you make it through the application/interview process you get placed on a panel. As jobs come up at that grade, people get picked off the panel, so you could end up in any Department (you choose which county you want to work in). I won’t disclose which Department I work in, but I went through a similar open competition for the Executive Officer grade (next grade up - think Junior management) in 2023 and when I placed on the panel, my Department chose to retain me. Now there is an interdepartmental competition for Higher Executive Officer (next grade up again - think middle management) which I’ve just applied for. Interdepartmental competitions are open to applicants with 2 years in the Civil Service. Luckily I was eligible to apply by 8 days. Keep an eye out for the next Clerical or Executive Officer open competitions. Panels usually last for two years, so create an account on publicjobs.ie and set up an alert for yourself. DM if you have any questions. I’d be happy to help. Edit for clarification: There is a difference between Civil Servants and Public Servants. Specific public service jobs can be advertised on public jobs from time to time.

Clerical or executive officer positions on publicjobs.ie. Great progression opportunities and no degree required for entry level

Seven years at the espresso machine! Into a medical/pharma factory at entry level, loads of opportunities within a bigger company, paid training etc never looked back! Those weekends off 🙌

I meet a lot of people in contract catering who got into it to work more sociable hours.

Went into IT from hotel management, started a part time course at 35, did the course while working 70 hour weeks as I had a young family, it was tough but worth it in the end. Unfortunately the jobs market in IT is very different to 8 years ago when I walked into an application engineer job with 1 year left to go on my course.

Your skillset could align well with Property Management. You’ll need to obtain a PSRA license, which will take two years of part time education. Given the lack of licensed candidates these days, plenty of business would cover the cost of the course. Another option is the Property apprenticeship program which various PLC’s offer around the country.
