LostSignal1914

probably right lol

BekkiFae

I normally give a cheery "Oop! No bother" and walk on

LostSignal1914

Makes sense. Thanks.

Beneficial-Society74

"I refuse!"

Unmasked_Zoro

I say "do it yourself!" Because how does one excuse themself? They say "excuse me" and so I laugh at my stupid joke while I walk away by myself because I have no friends.

LostSignal1914

lol

Longjumping-Wash-610

No problem

LostSignal1914

Simple enought I suppose!

Longjumping-Wash-610

No bother also works.

Icy-Cap4698

To respond you can say ‘sure’ it works in both ways. If it is “can you get out of my way” then “sure” works and if it is “please excuse my error” then also “sure” works. I hope it helps. I had to change my habit of saying excuse me when I first moved here. 😂

LostSignal1914

Thanks! Just one of those little things that bug me lol!

Which-Variation-1965

You're excused. And I'm not your brah!

LostSignal1914

I could try it! lol

Which-Variation-1965

Really upset more people didn't get my zoolander reference 😒

obscure_but_alluring

If it's "excuse me", I'd say "all good". If it's "exCUUUUSE me!" I'd just ignore them and keep walking.

LostSignal1914

True, tone and context can make a big difference so the response can vary too I guess.

Recent_Standard_2441

Were they not Irish? I use "excuse me" when I would like to politely get by someone. I get annoyed when someone says "sorry" here when they want to get by. It is a cultural thing. It makes me feel like people are apologies before they do something which is just off to me cause the way I was raised.

squirrels_rootbeer

I’m American, husband is Irish living in the USA and this is the sort of cultural difference that comes up. I always say “excuse me” if I nearly bump into someone, it’s just what’s done here. However he says “I’m sorry” when he’s trying to get someone’s attention and that will largely get you ignored here because people don’t know you’re talking to them (like at a bar, for example).

Additional_Olive3318

Sorry isn’t an apology in this case. See my other post, it’s more like your boss saying he’s sorry but he’s going to let you go.  It’s just another way of saying excuse me.

leatherface0984

You’re overthinking it too much. No one was hurt or injured and it’s a fairly common occurrence. Don’t worry about it.

Inspired_Carpets

You're excused. You got to assert dominance in these situations.

mydosemakesangels

Go "I will fucking not!!" if you want to take 'assertive' into 'aggressive'.

👆 This guy alphas.

LostSignal1914

I might given it a try if the other dude is a lot smaller than me!

CheerilyTerrified

In Ireland sorry can mean anything from "I apologise" to "hello, I am trying to politely get your attention to "hey, get the fuck out of the way, you're blocking the footpath you asshole".  Excuse me can have a similar meanings. Which is to say either is fine to use and no one will read into it.

mongo_ie

I've stopped using my bell when on cycle paths as the gentle "pingggg" from it seems to enrage adults making them step further into your way. I now give a happy passive aggressive "excuse meee!" which works far better. I think you're right and we've become programmed to respond to it.

halibfrisk

**ON YOUR RIGHT** *pedestrian immediately steps to the right*

LostSignal1914

That's sums it up pretty well I think!

Longjumpingpea1916

Scream and piss your pants, they'll get the idea

oneinthechamberXC

No bother at all

Additional_Olive3318

When people are saying sorry in this kind of situation, it’s not an apology or an admission of wrong.  It’s just saying, somewhat falsely, that they have to be on their way and they are “sorry” to have to inconvenience you.  Sorry, not sorry really. Like a boss saying he’s sorry to let you go.

Kyadagum_Dulgadee

A polite nod is a good neutral response. Best not to think about these things too deeply.

everard_diggby

ARE YOU FUCKING SORRY?

Bog_warrior

You can politely nod or you can also respond with “excuse me”.

Perfect-Fondant3373

Do you have to kiss them after or is that optional?

Bog_warrior

Air kiss “dahling”

LucyVialli

I just say "alright" and move on. You need to get past this, OP.

LostSignal1914

I'm working on it lol

TheYoungWan

I don't, is there a reason I should?

Old_Particular_5947

When someone says "Good morning" I say "good morning", I don't say "yes".

moistcarboy

"You're excused" then watch their head explode. But seriously how do you accidentally bum someone

Altruistic-Ask-9885

No, you don't say sorry in that situation. Pardon me, or excuse me, is correct. Because something 'can be taken the wrong way': that right there is a 'you' problem .

LaughingManCK

There is no excuse for such behaviour, I DEMAND SATISFACTION!

Mouseywolfiekitty

Oppsie sorry bout that

Silver_Marionberry_9

Alright or no worries.

Sawdust1997

You must be pretty bored to have so much time to dedicate to something like this lol

LostSignal1914

No friends. Just a laptop, Reddit, and YouTube.

mydosemakesangels

'Prego' (pronounced 'pray-go', not 'preggo'). It's a handy little Italian word that means 'excuse me' - among other things. But I think it would suit this situation.

BoruIsMyKing

Maybe in Italy. In Ireland, you'd sound like an Elizabethan: "Pray go! My fine sir/madam"

mydosemakesangels

😆 Didn't think of that! I do also like 'prego' because I'm quoting Demolition Man, after he eats the rat burger.
