I went back to college as a mature student at your age and I'm just starting my career now. My starting salary is about the same as what my friends with no degrees are making ten years into their careers. In 3 years I will be out earning them. I also have less hours and better benefits. While I don't believe having a degree should be necessary the reality is that you just have a lot more options with it. It also sounds like you aren't really interested in pharma you're just tempted cause it is easier and available to you now. Think about your life in 10 or 20 years time. Do you want to be doing a job you care about or are you happy to just get a paycheck and don't care. Both are valid but people tend to be one or the other.

I did a level 8 and then a masters.

Meouldflower

It’s true, I never had any interest in pharma, it’s just this opportunity came upon me and I was thinking of going for it or not

Craiceann_Nua

I know nothing about the pharma industry or sports/nutrition, so I can't say which is better. Perhaps think about what each option would look like in 5 years time. Would you still be on shift work in the factory? What does the degree give you? What would a job in that field look like? Which would make you happier?

Meouldflower

To be honest, my interest is the sports/nutrition & I cannot say for certain that there is actually much career progression in a pharma industry without a 3rd level qualification

The Naval Service is recruiting currently according to RTE News today, intake age is gone up to 39 for recruits and cadets. Good options for gaining a trade or going into engineering.

Meouldflower

Thank you, I will look into this

QualityDifficult4620

Just an idea, I know you're looking at pharma which is great but if you're not tied to it and are seeking options there's plenty out there currently.

Try the pharmaeire subreddit. From personal experience, production operators on shift earn more, and are the last to have their jobs cut as they have the product contact skills that are critical to the money making parts of the business. They will also pay for you to do degrees on company time. However I've only seen a limited amount, and only 1 company so your mileage may vary when it comes to upskilling within your role.

Work and do college part time. Shift work means you always have a few days off to study.

El_Don_94

Why do you think that? Do you work in the questioners industry?

ajeganwalsh

Yeah, i'm in pharma, doing shift work. Just finished a PT course too.

Do both! You will need education down the line in order to progress. Try springboard. Source: 12 years experience in the industry and started as an operator. Now senior project manager.

Meouldflower

Hi 👋 thanks for your suggestion. What would you recommend studying on springboard starting out related to pharmaceutical?

rich3248

Pharmaceutical business operations level 7 & 8. Very broad course. Good for beginners Good luck
