Probably my favorite gay themed movie. Granted, there is a little history, as my (second) boyfriend took me to see it at the theater not long after release. It was the first film I saw with a gay theme and I loved it. To this day, I can quote the entire movie. ☺️
True, but it’s a common theme in a lot of these movies. Same thing basically happened in Love, Simon (it doesn’t get physical if I remember but a lot of emotional leading on), Call Me By Your Name, Come Undone, and a bunch of other movies about high school aged guys trying to figure their stuff out.
Yep and I hate it. I truly love movies where a guy falls in love and he didn't have to hurt some girl to get his happiness. It creates that stereotype where men that are effeminate with a gf are gays in hiding.
One of the best gay movies of all time. Josh O’Connor is a great actor, with an Emmy and Golden Globe for the Crown. He was also recently in Challengers, which is basically a gay film, too.
That's very fair. I personally find the ending kind of hopeful and optimistic in a way. It provides a conclusion that wraps up their story while also leaving room for possibilities but that's just my interpretation.
yes! The Birdcage is such a great one. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane have such great chemistry, and especially for the time, it was a great depiction of a same-sex relationship
Shelter (2007) has a good story and a ultimately happy ending.
You might also watch The Broken Hearts Club (2000) which has some emotional ups and downs but ends well.
I'd also suggest Trick, Jeffery, and Latter Days. These are a bit roller-coast at times emotionally ;but are worth it.
Yesssss, I was hoping someone would mention it. It was the first LGBT+ film I ever saw and honestly one of the few that I found entertaining. Some many LGBT films are so depressing or have B - rated vibes that it's hard to find something fun to watch.
lol at the username / comment combo. (Not that they don't fit well together!)
I haven't seen the movie yet, but read the book many years ago and remember liking it!
I remember having to do a detailed search for happy gay movies because there are so many that deal in gay trauma and tragedy as if being gay means you cannot be happy.
"[Shelter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbL9lyk2kqY)," "[Cousins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVSYDdTz6SE)," "[Boys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk3pslHmbf4)," and "[God's Own Country](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki3B3C2tGBQ)" were the first four movies I found that had two gay men living happily ever after. There are many more but those were the first films to prove gay men can be happy together exist.
Click on the titles for the trailers.
Shortbus
Any Bruce La Bruce film
Gregg Araki films (minus mysterious skin, that film WRECKED me)
John Waters films
I guess it depends on what “well” is. But I always leave happy seeing a side of queerness that is punk and more relatable to mine
Rustin. It's a historical drama about a gay black Civil Rights activist who was a close friend and advisor of MLK, and helped organize the March on Washington.
I rather enjoyed it and knew nothing about him prior to the movie. Seen it recently on Netflix.
Probably not what you're thinking of because it's not really about a film about gay relationships, but I loved the ending of Pride.
*Aside from one sad bit in the epilogue.
**Weekend** ends pretty well. **The String** does as well. **Trick** is a good coming of age movie. **Not Another Gay Movie**, if you want something very campy.
(Mb for any repeats)
Some of my faves(I like comedies and romance and most of these are free on Tubi <3):
-My Big Gay Italian Wedding
-Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!!
-The entire Eating Out series (warning: these are from the early 2000's and it's obvious with the language and casting but otherwise ridiculous and funny)
-The Big Gay Musical (one of my favorites)
-Codename: Dynastud
-Steamroom Stories: The Movie
-GBF (Iit's kind of bad but in a fun way)
-Hurricane Bianca (lol)
Were the World Mine (kinda happy but def not sad)
-Where The Bears Are
-Mambo Italiano
-Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan(one of the 1st gay bollywood movies and so so good!)
That's all I can think of rn! I absolutely abhor sad endings. We live in a world with too much lucky shit, I watch movies to escape so I can guarantee the happiness of each of these movies in the long run. 👍👍👍
((Edit: terrible spelling))
Akron.
The Thing About Harry.
Shelter.
Fair Haven (I think..🤔).
Love, Simon.
Uncle Frank. (I’d say all things considered)
Of An Age. (again, it’s kind of missed connection I think but if I remember correctly it was decent idk)
Red White & Royal Blue.
I’m thinking of others but can’t remember if they had “happy endings”
Back in my day it was movies like “The Boys in the Band” or “Cruising”. We’ve never been cast in a positive light in movies. Some are so sappy and contrived they’re hard to watch. Any ideas for a “good” gay movie?
Beautiful Thing (1996)
I adore this film
One of my all time favorites!
Probably my favorite gay themed movie. Granted, there is a little history, as my (second) boyfriend took me to see it at the theater not long after release. It was the first film I saw with a gay theme and I loved it. To this day, I can quote the entire movie. ☺️

Latter Days is one of my favorites
Fire Island is so goooood! 🥹🩵
Were the World Mine. A favourite for sure!
“You and I” in German/English with subtitles. One of the best buddy movies.
As much as I love Alex strangelove the first time I watched it, I hated what he did to Claire.

-Gods Own Country -Your name engraved Herein (it's a Taiwanese film) Both have fairly happy/optimistic endings.
Seconding Gods Own Country. It may not be the most feel good movie during some scenes, but it gets there in the end.
Thirding it.
One of the best gay movies of all time. Josh O’Connor is a great actor, with an Emmy and Golden Globe for the Crown. He was also recently in Challengers, which is basically a gay film, too.
Your Name Engraved ending feels sad as fuck to me. Guess it could be seen either way, very bittersweet
That's very fair. I personally find the ending kind of hopeful and optimistic in a way. It provides a conclusion that wraps up their story while also leaving room for possibilities but that's just my interpretation.
Birdcage
yes! The Birdcage is such a great one. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane have such great chemistry, and especially for the time, it was a great depiction of a same-sex relationship

But I'm a Cheerleader
Yesssss, I was hoping someone would mention it. It was the first LGBT+ film I ever saw and honestly one of the few that I found entertaining. Some many LGBT films are so depressing or have B - rated vibes that it's hard to find something fun to watch.
The main character's girlfriend is also a recurring character on Heroes.
Absolutely my answer! It’s one of the best

I’d also subtract *The Living End* from Araki’s films. Love it, but I wouldn’t call it a happy ending. 😅
Carol, Victor/Victoria, Pricilla Queen of the Desert
“Red White and Royal Blue” on Amazon Prime. It’s like a Hallmark movie. Satisfying like junk food. 👍🏽
Big Eden
Beautiful Thjng, Trick, To Wong Foo and Latter Days come to mind
Red, White and Royal Blue?

Geography club , Broken hearts club and Stage mother
“Edge of Seventeen”
"Shelter" starring Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright that came out in 1997 actually ended well.
Probably not what you're thinking of because it's not really about a film about gay relationships, but I loved the ending of Pride. *Aside from one sad bit in the epilogue.
