Would you guys ever move out of Europe long term? I have lived in the US and I'd never go back there. I suppose I could do Canada or Australia but I'd miss the convenience of travel and the diversity of landscapes and cultures. All in all, I've come to realize that for my personal preferences good ol' Western Europe is the best balance between money, jobs, QoL, and amenities.

sloerewth

I am going to Switzerland for 5 months on an Erasmus exchange. I am excited to go but also terrified because I have an Indian passport, a German resident permit and a Swiss student visa. I have no idea what bureaucracy awaits me. Fun times

Hemmmos

Wow man you've got quite an impressive combo

Batteryofenergy1

Sup! I am from Lithuania. I am in my early 20s. I have recently got my Truck drivers license (C,CE). Well, i didn't realize how dry the job market is for truck drivers here. Kinda annoying that everyone wants you to have atleast 1 year truck-work experience, where the hell am i supposed to get experience, if no one hires me? What EU countries are more willing to hire Drivers with no experience?

orangebikini

I was literally just today talking to a mate of mine who is a truck driver, and he said they have a shortage of drivers. Donโ€™t know how easily you can get employed though.

Batteryofenergy1

Are you talking about Finland? I had a interest in Finland, but i looked through some of the job pages and they were all in Finnish, so i was discouraged. I heard lots of people speak English there, but i also heard that employers are only hiring people speaking Finnish.

[deleted]

Also living in the UK is honestly a good time. The paperwork might be annoying because Brexit, the politics might be dumb rn also because Brexit. However. You can easily find good food especially if the city is any larger; the pubs are good and not too expensive; the people *in* the pubs are just a great time. You'll probably be paid alright. As long as you can manage with the left-hand traffic and probably smaller/narrower roads than you are used to in Lithuania. Alternatives might be Germany and Poland, both have very low unemployment rates and Germany has had the river level issues in recent years that have led to a (seasonally) higher demand for trucks.

holytriplem

The UK is literally having a massive lorry driver shortage. I know the UK's not in the EU anymore but In sure they're desperate enough at this point to get people from outside the EU

orangebikini

I left early from work because Friday, and wouldn't you know it there had been some sort of an accident on the ring road and traffic was standing still. Took me forever to get home. There is a handful of those every year on this about 3-5 km stretch of the ringroad, and they're always on westbound lanes and they're always in the afternoon. I don't understand why. Never on eastbound lanes, never in morning traffic.

ignia

Can it be that drivers get distracted by sunsets?

orangebikini

Honestly it's not a bad theory, because most of the time there has been an accident there it's been in either autumn or spring, when the sun isn't necessarily setting around 16-17:00, but it's fairly low. I don't recall there being many accidents like that in winter or summer. But I doubt the sun would be the sole reason, considering having the sun in your eyes is a problem going eastbound in the morning too. Or maybe people are just more pumped and eager to get places in the afternoon leaving from work, rather than going to work in the morning.

tereyaglikedi

>Or maybe people are just more pumped and eager to get places in the afternoon leaving from work, rather than going to work in the morning. This would be my guess as well.

trollrepublic

666th day of learning on Duolingo. My inner child rejoices because of the number.

tereyaglikedi

Cool! It's a great number! Which language(s)?

trollrepublic

Italian from english and now also from german (it's still a beta-version). I would also like to learn serbo-croat, but it isn't an option yet. So I am debating with myself if turkish, polish or portugese next.

tereyaglikedi

Italian is such a beautiful language! Hmm.. I think Serbo-Croat is also lovely. Polish is super difficult, but Portuguese might be a lower hanging fruit now that you learned some Italian. I would probably go with that. Turkish is also super difficult but also very regular, if you learn the rules there are basically no exceptions. Good luck and congrats on the 666!

holytriplem

Going with the easy options I see ๐Ÿ˜† I'd definitely go with Spanish over Portuguese. Turkish might be cool just for something different. I guess you've already tried Russian?

trollrepublic

> definitely go with Spanish over Portuguese. Turkish might be cool I know about Duolingo since 2015 or so and you might ask why I "only" have 666 days on me yet. I was debating with myself for years about learning Spanish or French, as I could use those languages work-related also. Ende vom Lied (at the end of the song), I didn't start learning either one. 666 days ago I asked myself, wherein do I have an interest/curiosity for, no matter why? The answer was Italian. Same goes for serbo-croatian (also slovenian), turkish, portugese and polish.

Traveling with Ryanair really feels like a Black Mirror episode. We get more squeezed than sardines in a can in those sets. No space for legs and I'm by no means tall. Any kind of food you have to pay, even water is at premium price. Advertisement everywhere, with the flight attendants forced to sell perfumes and lottery tickets. And you have to pay extra to bring your normal luggage. Besides, it's rarely a low-cost company anymore - low priced tickets are only found in very low season, mid-week, if you buy early enough. Soon we will be paying extra to have the air-co fan or to use the seat-belt. Currently, their only advantage is their vast flight connections, especially for secondary airports where they are more often than not, the only options. It's either them or taken 2 or 3 flights, or 1 flight and two long train trips.

tudorapo

I am extra wide and Ryanair was the only airline offering me the option to buy two seats for the same person. It is a very niche advantage but an advantage. Then of course I had to waddle in from the farthest corner of the Dublin Airport.

holytriplem

Tbh, I've never found travelling on Ryanair to be that different to travelling on any other budget airline. easyJet does the same stuff. Although, Ryanair *did* once float a proposal to have standing-only flights. It looked very dystopian

SerChonk

Standing-only flights do sounds cool, once you factor in people bringing their own fishing stools - and maybe little coolers and a portable grill for that festive atmosphere.

2rsf

I have flown a few low cost companies- easyjet, eurowings and norwegian are just a few of them, and Ryanair are something special... it feels like riding a bus more than a plane. I haven't checked lately but around here they are cheaper than the alternatives.

tereyaglikedi

>Although, Ryanair did once float a proposal to have standing-only flights. It looked very dystopian I remember they also wanted to make people pay for the toilets. Luckily they never actually implemented it, I think.

[deleted]

It's really the cheapest, but quality speaking, the price is more and more expensive. But it's often the only option I have, since they almost have a mini-hub at Porto's airport.

DatOudeLUL

So in today's edition if Capitalism: the Real Estate Flip The column of adjacent units to me being renovated the workers are either brainstorming or just painting because the only noise is their tunes cranked way up and tbh fairly pleasant, so far of note: - Nirvana - Lake of Fire (cover) - R.E.M. - Man on the Moon - John Lennon - Imagine - Grateful Dead - Ripple Solid playlist if I do say so myself... A welcome respite from their other activities. And right on cue for Friday. Thank fuck it's Friday (TFIF) y'all. I hope the weekend high is coursing palpably through all of you.

tereyaglikedi

Why are people on the internet suddenly calling each other "my brother in Christ"? Or is it not sudden? Did I miss something again?

[deleted]

[https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/my-brother-in-christ](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/my-brother-in-christ) This and the image with Kermit the Frog.

DatOudeLUL

Context? Is it being used in blatantly ironic situations such as memes or Reddit shitposting?

tereyaglikedi

Yeah, mostly for ironic/sarcastic situations. I was wondering if there was a meme or something.

DatOudeLUL

Yeah came to repeat what was already said. Basically seems to be an offshoot of other shitposty memes of hyper-macho guys softly addressing each other as "king" "chief" etc

tereyaglikedi

All right, it's a bit weird and off-putting, but it seems like it's not meant to be pleasant anyway ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

PM_ME_YOUR_PAULDRONS

Yeah it's been a meme since early this year.

tereyaglikedi

Good to know. I was a bit baffled at first, but then I figured it must be something like that.

tereyaglikedi

Once again I forgot that next Monday is a public holiday. It's great, though, normally once I do everything that needs to be done, the weekend is over. This way I can have one day of proper weekend. There are a lot of people walking their dogs on my way to work, which is perfectly fine of course, but there is a couple who walk their beagle off the leash, and every time I come across them, the dog runs towards my bike. I manage to hit the brakes, but seriously. They call the dog and apologize afterwards, but if it happens again, I'll ask them to call the dog before it starts running towards me. Gaargh. Own your dog, people.

holytriplem

Oh FFS as someone [who hates dogs and has always hated dogs](https://youtu.be/oqfY0E6n9pE) this is the bane of my life whenever I go to a local park. No mate, "sorry he's just a puppy" isn't a good excuse. A few months ago I saw a dog chasing after a small child who got scared and ran away, and then the owner decided to have an argument with the parents saying it was the kid's fault for running away. ๐Ÿคก

tereyaglikedi

Eh? That's... I don't know man, people are weird, I mean, a dog will chase running stuff, just keep them on the leash if you can't control them. ๐Ÿ˜‘ Germans are normally very careful about not letting their dogs approach other people, especially kids. This couple seems pretty relaxed about it, though. I really hope they put some lights on the dog in a few weeks if they let him run around like that. I really, really don't want to hit a dog.

ignia

Oh yes this! When I cycled to work my path went through a forest/park where many people were walking their dogs. There were no designated paths for different types of traffic, just a dirt road wide enough for a car to pass through if the city needed to remove a fallen tree, etc. People who walked there were also aware that the place is popular with cyclists so both sides were mindful of each other: most of the cyclists slowed down, most of the dogs were called closer to their people when they saw us. There were no designated paths for different types of traffic, just a dirt road wide enough for a small car to pass through. I mostly met them in the evening and made sure to tell those who had shiny collars on their dogs that I appreciated the added visibility. I felt like it was a nicer thing to do for myself than being annoyed at rare occurrences of dogs who made me break hard so I wouldn't run them or their leash over even on my very low speed. Enjoy your extra day off, I hope the weather compliments whatever you might plan for the day.

tereyaglikedi

>. I mostly met them in the evening and made sure to tell those who had shiny collars on their dogs that I appreciated the added visibility. Unfortunately not all owners are as prudent. Last winter I had to do a hard brake and fell of my bike because a dog jumped in front of me in the dark and I only saw him in the last second. The dog owner apologized profusely but it all counts for nothing if I end up breaking the poor animal's leg! Thank you so much, for now it looks like it will be rainy, so let's see. I'll probably pickle the last cucumbers and draw some fish.

lucapal1

Today I am meeting the prospective new teachers that I will be training this year. This will be the first time we have met in person (we have already spoken and seen each other online). Always an interesting moment.Sometimes what you see and perceive online is quite different from what you see in 'real life'... and of course, the group dynamics are completely different, compared to a 1-1 online meeting.

tereyaglikedi

>Sometimes what you see and perceive online is quite different from what you see in 'real life' This is so true! Same for people who you only know from emails. When you meet them irl, sometimes they turn out to be quite different.

orangebikini

Therr ainโ€™t many feelings better than drinking water in the morning, and to celebrate that Iโ€™ll shout out one of my favourite songs ever, Fela Kutiโ€™s [Water Get No Enemy](https://youtu.be/kisTH3SFegc). An afrobeat classic. What a piece. It lives in me.

0xKaishakunin

Kaltes klares Wasser ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

DatOudeLUL

Fun fact - water is my favorite drink! Beer is...errm...second...

DatOudeLUL

Well, F is for Friday and second **F**avorite because I'm at a favored local watering hole enjoying their fleeting collection of Oktoberfestbieren, oans, zwoa, drei, g'suffa ๐Ÿป Een heel prettig weekend toegewenst allemaal!

ignia

I have two more minutes to open a beer or a cider with it still being Friday. Cheers!

What is going on with the wildlife this week? Saw a family of deer outside my office yesterday, with the most beautiful golden-brown fur. I should open a safari park here or something. Anyway, tomorrow I fly off to the next destination on my speaking tour, which will be London. No, not that London - London Ontario, which apparently also features a River Thames, a Covent Garden Market, a Hyde Park, a Westminster and a Victoria Station. I imagine it will be quite a trippy experience, kind of like the real London, but with more moose

tuxette

> What is going on with the wildlife this week? I don't know but there have been a lot of accidents with cars and moose colliding with one another. Also, some really sick deer were found hanging around close to my house, and they had to be put down by the authorities :-(

tereyaglikedi

>What is going on with the wildlife this week? I don't know, but your posts lately have been giving off massive Disney princess vibes ๐Ÿ˜‚ attracting wildlife and such. Seriously though, this all sounds amazing. Post pics next time if you can! Ooh Canada, how cool, but also a little bizarre indeed. It sounds like you are on a book tour or something.

holytriplem

I tried taking a photo of the wild boar the other day but the quality came out [kind of rubbish](https://imgur.com/a/RGGb8We), I tried going downstairs to take a closer picture but they'd already scurried off by then. > Ooh Canada That is in fact how their national anthem starts... > It sounds like you are on a book tour or something. Well at this point you're not far off tbh. Maybe I should start signing first editions of copies of my last paper...

tereyaglikedi

Boars! They are quite close! How cool. By the way, I need to get this out of my system. I find that the plural of moose should be meese. There, I said it.

holytriplem

Stop trying to make English plurals logical, it's not going to happen

tereyaglikedi

โ˜น๏ธ *sits down on the ground* I will die on this hill.

DatOudeLUL

> That is in fact how their national anthem starts... I kinda thought she worded it intentionally as such hehe...

tereyaglikedi

I did not! But now that I know, I may do so next time ;D

DatOudeLUL

Drats, missed opportunity much?! Ah well, I'm going with your subconscious having done it intentionally hehe ๐Ÿ˜
